The main objectives of this study were (a) to elucidate young tennis players’ use of music to manipulate emotional states, and (b) to present a model grounded in present data to illustrate this phenomenon and to stimulate further research. Anecdotal evidence suggests that music listening is used regularly by elite athletes as a preperformance strategy, but only limited empirical evidence corroborates such use. Young tennis players (N = 14) were selected purposively for interview and diary data collection. Results indicated that participants consciously selected music to elicit various emotional states; frequently reported consequences of music listening included improved mood, increased arousal, and visual and auditory imagery. The choice of music tracks and the impact of music listening were mediated by a number of factors, including extramusical associations, inspirational lyrics, music properties, and desired emotional state. Implications for the future investigation of preperformance music are discussed.

The main objective of the current study was to examine the impact of musically induced emotions on athletes’ subsequent choice reaction time (CRT) performance. A random sample of 54 tennis players listened to researcher-selected music whose tempo and intensity were modified to yield six different music excerpts (three tempi × two intensities) before completing a CRT task. Affective responses, heart rate (HR), and RTs for each condition were contrasted with white noise and silence conditions. As predicted, faster music tempi elicited more pleasant and aroused emotional states; and higher music intensity yielded both higher arousal (p < .001) and faster subsequent CRT performance (p < .001). White noise was judged significantly less pleasant than all experimental conditions (p < .001); and silence was significantly less arousing than all but one experimental condition (p < .001). The implications for athletes’ use of music as part of a preevent routine when preparing for reactive tasks are discussed.

*THIS PAPER HAS NOT YET BEEN PEER REVIEWED* Listening to music is a strategy many people use to regulate their emotions, especially sadness. However, there is disagreement about whether listening to music is a healthy way to regulate emotions, with some research finding that sad music worsens a sad state, especially for people high in rumination. To further explore the immediate consequences of music listening when sad 128 young adults (41% male, aged 18 to 25 years) were induced into a sad emotional state prior to random assignment to listening of either self-selected music, experimenter-selected sad music, or no music. Results revealed that listening to either self-selectedor experimenter-selected music led to a decrease in sadness. No difference was found between groups at post-listening. However, participants who listened to self-selected music reported a return to baseline levels of sadness, while this did not occur for participants who listened to experimenter-selected or were in the no music control. Rumination was also measured but did not moderate the impact of music listening on sadness for either musiccondition. Furthermore, there was no impact of rumination on participants’ perceptions of sadness in music. These results support the notion that listening to sad music does not worsen a sad state—even for those high in rumination—although it does appear to slow the emotion regulation process in cases where sad music is not self-selected.

Background and Study Aim. The current study was carried out to analyze the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the emotional state and nutritional behavior of university athletes. Material and Methods. This research was carried out during the first wave of COVID-19 in Turkey. A total of 334 (162 female and 172 male) athletes who are undergraduate students in the faculties of sports sciences of universities participated in the study. Their mean age was 21.46 ± 3.7. The Emotional Eating Scale (EES) was used to determine the nutritional behavior of the participants and The Profile of Mood States (POMS) scale was used to determine their emotional state. The Chi-square and Cross-tabulation tests were used for the statistical analysis of categorical variables. Mann Whitney U test was used for the analysis of continuous variables, and Spearman Sequence Correlation test protocols were used for correlation analysis. Results. The results of the statistical analysis revealed that there was a significant increase in the amount of fluid consumption of elite athletes. There was a significant relationship between negative mood and emotional eating sub-assessment (p <0.05). However, it was found that there was no significant difference between total and subscale scores of amateur and elite athletes (p >0.05). Conclusion. As a result of the research, it was seen that elite and amateur athletes did not have a significant difference in emotional eating and mood status, except for the amount of fluid consumption. The increase in negative emotions of university athletes is an important factor that increased their emotional eating behavior.

A study of the impact of color on the purchasing power of consumers on the example of well-known nonsense that is popular for Ukrainian buyers, advertising and its color scheme, the impact of color on the purchasing power of consumers. Perception of color and emotional attitude to it depends mainly on the emotional state of man and the associations they arise. Certain emotional states of a person correspond to his attitude to color, shade and combination of colors: one color is preferred, another does not cause special emotions, the third is completely rejected. And also it is possible to note about age features of the relation to color scale.

In the article, we have analyzed the information that concerns the potential impact of volunteer activity on the psycho-emotional state and the family well-being of volunteers, in particular those who carry out their activities in extreme conditions. We have analyzed the peculiarities of the activities of Ukrainian volunteers who assisted the combatants and victims of the war during the most fierce military confrontation in the East of Ukraine in 2014– 2016 and found that their activities could have a negative impact on the socio-psychological climate and the functioning of their families due to prolonged, tensional, emotionally intense and sometimes risky nature of activities. We have researched the peculiarities of matrimonial relationship and some indicators of family well-being (level of satisfaction with marriage and marriage partner, peculiarities of communication, readiness for interaction, level of mutual respect and emotional attraction) in the families of active participants of the volunteer movement, who directed their efforts to assist the military and civilian during a period of active military confrontation. We have analyzed the correlation between the family well-being of volunteers and the peculiarities of their activities. Particular attention was paid to the analysis of the specifics of activities and relationships with marital partners for volunteers whose families eventually have broken up (every fifth of studied participants have experienced a divorce during active engagement in volunteering). The indicators of the psycho-emotional status of volunteers (fixation and somatization of anxiety, depression) were also analyzed. We have identified a number of factors that can negatively affect the family well-being and the psycho-emotional state of volunteers who operate in conditions of military confrontation, in particular the intensity and duration of volunteering activity, significant personal responsibility, high emotional involvement, lack of support from family members.

This study examined the effects of lighting colour on emotional states and the effects of ethnicity on the impact of lighting colours on emotional states, based on the Mehrabian and Russell’s emotional state model measuring pleasure, arousal and dominance. It was hypothesised that there are significant differences in pleasure and arousal among six lighting colours: red, green, blue, yellow, orange and purple and that different ethnicities (i.e. Asian and Caucasian) can influence the effects of the six lighting colours on pleasure and arousal. To test the hypotheses, an experiment was conducted in a controlled lab using a colour-changing LED lighting fixture with 82 participants. The results revealed that there were significant differences in pleasure and arousal among the six lighting colours. Ethnicity had significant effects on the impact of lighting colour on pleasure but not on arousal. Blue was the most pleasant lighting colour and showed significantly higher pleasure than red and purple. Red was the least pleasant lighting colour and showed significantly lower pleasure than all other lighting colours. Asians found red and purple lighting significantly less pleasant than all other colours and tended to feel more unpleasant when exposed to red, orange and purple lighting than Caucasians.

The present study shows that the impact of emotional states on creativity depends on individual emotional characteristics as well as the type of task used. The results found during the last 30 years diverge concerning relationships between emotion and creative cognition. For this reason, we conducted a study to explore whether the impact of emotional states on creative potential is moderated by individuals’ emotional traits. Using a multivariate approach, we measured (1) emotional valence and arousal level of participants after an emotional induction, (2) emotional traits (e.g., alexithymia, emotional expressivity, affective intensity, emotional idiosyncrasy), and (3) quantity, originality, and valence of generated ideas in two distinct divergent thinking tasks. Participants were 107 undergraduate university students. Regression analyses confirm our hypothesis showing that the impact of emotional states on creative performance is not uniform, but depends on participants’ emotional state and emotion-related traits. For example, we observed that the more individuals had difficulty with emotional information and the higher their level of arousal, the less they generated pleasant ideas. Several processes such as arousal regulation may explain the observed results.

The paper highlights the results of a study of complications in the professional activities of teachers and their emotional state. Showing the analysis of the problem of complications in the execution of teachers' professional duties in the conditions of remote work and as a consequence - degradation of the emotional state, which is manifested in negative psychological symptoms. As a result of theoretical analysis, it was found that in different countries, studies of the emotional states of teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic are being conducted. To find out the complications in the professional activities and emotional state of teachers associated with the transition to distance learning in connection with quarantine, an online survey of teachers was conducted using the questionnaire "Identification of socio-psychological problems caused by the pandemic COVID-19 in the activities of educational institutions" developed by Panko V.H. Respondents were asked to assess the presence of the problem by scale where "0" - no presence; 1 - minimum presence; 10 - maximum presence. It was found that more than half of respondents (N = 3209) have difficulties in carrying out professional activities in the conditions of remote work (inability to perform the full range of planned tasks and professional responsibilities; insufficient competence in ICT; difficulties with organizing time; disorders in communication between teachers and parents to control the quality of students' knowledge; difficulties with involving children in distance learning; complications with student discipline). As a result, respondents experience emotional exhaustion, decreased emotional balance and excessive fatigue. The results of the study confirmed the need for professional development and psychological assistance to teachers. The ways of psychological support of the educational process are outlined. The article considers the method of development and implementation of a comprehensive program of psychocorrection of emotional states of elderly women with cardiovascular diseases. The basic provisions of the program, the list and sequence of actions taking into account the certain components of psychoemotional states of patients with cardiovascular diseases are substantiated. The main components of the psycho-emotional state of elderly women with cardiovascular diseases, which consist of a set of psychophysiological factors, including: the specifics of emotionally negative states: anxiety, depression, asthenia, hostility; clinical manifestations of cardiovascular diseases and concomitant changes in the psycho-emotional sphere; personality traits, including aggression, anxiety, neuroticism and depression in the structure of personal characteristics. An important pathogenetic role in depression is assigned to increase the activity of the sympathetic - adrenal system, which leads to increased heart rate, blood pressure, myocardial contractility and, accordingly, myocardial oxygen consumption, which leads to cardiovascular disease. Depression also revealed a decrease in vagal activity. It was determined that elderly women with cardiovascular disease are characterized by high levels of anxiety, as well as pronounced manifestations of anxiety and depression. The main idea of ​​the proposed comprehensive program of psychocorrection was the following statement: the established components of the psycho-emotional state of elderly patients with cardiovascular disease can purposefully influence the pathogenetic factors of their development and reduce their level through special psychocorrectional and psychoprophylactic measures. features. The main goal of psychocorrection of elderly women with cardiovascular diseases was based on systemic and genetic modeling approaches and is to maintain physical and mental status. The following components were included in the complex program: methodological, methodical and system. The set of psychocorrection measures consisted of 3 blocks that had different goals and content: pedagogical, block to improve the psycho-emotional characteristics of the individual, block to improve physical condition, increase endurance and efficiency. Game therapy, art therapy and body-oriented therapy were used to achieve psycho-correctional goals of emotional states. According to the formative experiment, the impact on such psycho-emotional characteristics as anxiety - 30%; depression - 38%; asthenia - 42%; hostility - 60%, which proves the effectiveness of the technique.

Abstract. This study measured the effect of emotional states on lexical decision task performance and investigated which underlying components (physiological, attentional orienting, executive, lexical, and/or strategic) are affected. We did this by assessing participants’ performance on a lexical decision task, which they completed before and after an emotional state induction task. The sequence effect, usually produced when participants repeat a task, was significantly smaller in participants who had received one of the three emotion inductions (happiness, sadness, embarrassment) than in control group participants (neutral induction). Using the diffusion model ( Ratcliff, 1978 ) to resolve the data into meaningful parameters that correspond to specific psychological components, we found that emotion induction only modulated the parameter reflecting the physiological and/or attentional orienting components, whereas the executive, lexical, and strategic components were not altered. These results suggest that emotional states have an impact on the low-level mechanisms underlying mental chronometric tasks.
