Thermogenesis in response to various intakes of palatable food

Complete energy balance studies were made on groups of overfed (A) and underfed (B) Wistar rats. In experiment A one group was fed cafeteria diet ad libitum (the intake was 29% larger than the control), two other groups were fed the same diet but in restricted quantities (18 and 9% above control), and a fourth group, fed a stock diet, served as control. In experiment B, caloric intake was restricted by 12 and 31% in two groups fed cafeteria diet, and by 21 and 34% in two other groups fed stock diet. The experiments lasted 41 days and during that period the protein gain was comparable between the control and the cafeteria-29% group (643.4 ± 33.3 vs. 578.1 ± 25.0) but the fat gain was significantly different between the two groups (863.2 ± 81.6 vs. 1663.2 ± 99.8 kJ). When energy expenditure (EE) (metabolizable energy less storage added to the cost of storage) is expressed as a percentage of metabolizable energy (ME) intake no significant difference was found among the groups. The average value was [Formula: see text]. This finding would not support the presence of dietary-induced thermogenesis in animals overfed on the cafeteria diet. However, since the obligatory cost associated with storing energy would not explain the higher EE of the overfed groups, it is suggested that the level of ME intake exerts continuous proportional regulatory action on EE and, as a result, energy is spared by underfeeding and it is wasted by overfeeding. Rats fed the cafeteria diet, independent of whether they are overfed or restricted were shown to increase both brown adipose tissue (BAT) protein content and thermogenic capacity in response to norepinephrine. For that reason it is suggested that it is not the caloric content of the diet which affects BAT but instead other factors such as fat content or palatability of the food. The results also suggest that BAT is not directly implicated in the regulatory responses associated with various intakes of food. Indeed in the underfed experiment, although the capacity of the BAT was enhanced in the cafeteria groups, the EE was not different from that of the animals fed the stock diet.

Abstract Background and Aims Vascular calcification (VC) is an important contributor to the high rate of cardiovascular mortality associated to chronic kidney disease. The inability to eliminate phosphorus (P) and the subsequent P retention promotes CV. P metabolism and uremic VC are influenced by obesity and by the caloric content of the diet. Caloric restriction (CR) has been shown to have multiple beneficial effects on health, for example, CR has been reported to improve vascular health and retard vascular ageing. However, to our knowledge the effect of CR on the development of uremic VC has not been explored. We hypothesize that CR may be beneficial to prevent the development of uremic VCs. Thus, the objective of the present study was to determine if rats subjected to CR were protected against VC. Method 48 Wistar rats were divided in four groups. The control diet provided Metabolizable Energy = 3.528 kcal/g and contained 0.6% Calcium (Ca) and 0.6% P. Additional diets of identical composition to the control diet but containing varying levels of Ca and P: 0.9% Ca, 0.9% P; 0.6% Ca, 1.2% P; and 0.9% Ca, 1.8% P, were also used in the experiments. Rats in Group 1 and 3 were fed 15 g/day of the control diet. Rats in Group 2 and 4 were calorie restricted and fed 10 g/day of diet with Ca/P = 0.9%/0.9%. Thus the daily P intake should be identical in the four groups. Uremia was induced by 5/6 nephrectomy (Nx). After Nx rats in Group 1 and 2 were fed ad libitum a diet with 0.6% Ca and 1.2% P. While rats in Group 3 and 4 were fed ad libitum a diet with 0.9% Ca and 1.8% P. Rats were supplemented with calcitriol. At the end of the experiment, rats were sacrificed to obtain blood samples and tissue samples (thoracic and abdominal aortas). After blood collection, plasma was separated by centrifugation and stored at –20° C until assayed. Plasma creatinine, Ca and P were measured by spectrophotometry. Energy intake was calculated based on food intake. VC was studied by histology and by measuring the tissue Ca content. Values are expressed as mean ± standard error (SE), the difference between groups was assessed by ANOVA. Fisher LSD test was used as a post-hoc procedure. p<0.05 was considered significant. Results Before Nx, caloric intake was significantly lower in calorie restricted rats (35.4 ± 0.1 and 35.8 ± 0.1 kcal/day) than in rats eating normal calories (52.7 ± 0.1 and 52.8 ± 0.2 kcal/day); however, P intake was almost identical in the four groups and ranged between 89.8 and 91.6 mg/day. After Nx, rats in all groups reduced food intake and, consequently, caloric intake. Thus, although the P content of the diet was increased after Nx, daily P intake was not increased in Groups 1 and 2; however, P intake was significantly increased in Groups 3 and 4 (120.9 ± 4.6 and 122.2 ± 6.2 mg/day, respectively). In all groups, rats had high plasma concentrations of creatinine and P, and low plasma concentrations of Ca. Also, all rats had elevated Ca content in the aorta. No significant differences between the study groups were found in any of these parameters (Table 1). Von Kossa staining of the aortas showed abundant mineral deposition in the four groups. Conclusion This study shows that, contrary to what was expected, CR did not prevent or ameliorate uremic calcifications.

The influence of dietary protein and caloric intake on thyroid function of immature rainbow trout (6.5 °C; 12 h L: 12 h D photocycle) fed a daily ration of 0.97% of body weight was studied. In experiment 1, trout fed four isocaloric diets (~ 3300 kcal of estimated metabolizable energy/kg; 1 cal = 4.1855 KJ) of identical digestible carbohydrate content (15.2%) but with varying percentages of lipid (7.5–17.6%) and protein (25.6–47.5%) exhibited negligible or modest changes in plasma L-thyroxine (T4) or 3,5,3′-triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) after 7 or 35 days. After 14 days, activity of hepatic 5′-monodeiodinase (5′D), which converts T4 to the active T3 form, was unaltered. However, at 38 days the functional level (Vmax) of 5′D was directly related to the level of protein intake. Substrate affinity (Km) was unchanged. In experiment 2, trout fed four isocaloric diets (~ 3575 kcal/kg) of similar lipid content (15.8%) but with varying percentages of digestible carbohydrate (3.6–54.2%) and protein (0.32–47.1%) generally showed unaltered plasma T4 after 7 or 35 days, but plasma T3 was depressed by the lowest dietary protein levels. Activity of 5′D was unaffected at 14 days, but at 38 days Vmax was directly related to the level of protein ingested; Km was not changed. Trout pair-fed diets of the highest protein content to achieve levels of protein intake equivalent to those of trout fed diets of lower protein content showed a depressed Vmax but no changes in Km or plasma T4 or T3 levels. We conclude that the level of protein intake in trout mainly determines the activity of 5′D, which is a more sensitive index of chronic thyroidal adjustment than plasma T4 or T3 levels. However, the amount of ingested protein relative to total available dietary energy and (or) the absolute intake levels of one or more nonprotein nutrients change 5′D activity, possibly by influencing the balance between protein synthesis and degradation.

Male and female rats were fed standard laboratory chow or a highly palatable diet (cafeteria diet) for 10 wk. The cafeteria diet caused an increase in caloric intake and in body weight, and it induced thermogenesis that was associated with elevated plasma triiodothyronine (T3) levels, increased brown adipose tissue size, and enhanced metabolic response to norepinephrine. For a comparable caloric intake, body-weight gain was significantly greater in female than in male rats possibly because of difference in thermogenesis as suggested by the response to norepinephrine. Exercise training (swimming 2 h/day for 10 wk) reduced food intake and body-weight gain and failed to increase norepinephrine-induced thermogenesis in rats fed laboratory chow. In animals fed the cafeteria diet, food intake and body-weight gain were also reduced by exercise training, which at the same time diminished the diet-induced thermogenesis as evidenced by the diminution of 1) brown fat hypertrophy, 2) the elevation of plasma T3, and 3) the hyperthermic response to injected norepinephrine. It is suggested that the thyroid hormone and catecholamines through their actions on the brown adipose tissue are the important regulatory of thermogenesis. Exercise training would reduce the diet-induced thermogenesis by preventing increased T3 production. Enhanced thermogenesis may be considered an adaptive reaction as it serves to reduce fat deposition in animals fed cafeteria diet and to promote nonshivering heat production in the cold. On the other hand, exercise training reduces thermogenesis and thus prevents energy wasting.

This study examined the effects of diet and treatment with noradrenergic receptor antagonists on weight gain and indices of Na+-K+-adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity in the rat. When rats were fed a palatable cafeteria diet, their caloric consumption increased by about 80%, but they did not gain weight significantly. Ouabain binding and K+-p-nitrophenylphosphatase (NPPase) activity were increased in brown adipose tissue and soleus. These indices remained elevated after the rats were returned to a regular diet. When rats were fasted for 3 days, they lost weight, and the indices of Na+-K+-ATPase activity were markedly reduced in brown adipose tissue and soleus. After refeeding the fasted rats gained weight three times more rapidly than nonfasted rats with similar food intake. Indices of Na+-K+-ATPase activity remained as low as they had been when the rats were fasting. There was a consistent negative correlation between weight gain per calorie eaten and brown adipose tissue NPPase activity. Changes in Na+-K+-ATPase could therefore be involved in the effects of overfeeding and fasting on metabolic efficiency. Desmethylimipramine binding was increased by cafeteria diet and decreased by fasting, consistent with changes in sympathetic nervous system activity. Treatment with prazosin, an alpha 1-noradrenergic receptor antagonist, reduced Na+-K+-ATPase in either control or cafeteria diet-fed rats but did not alter the effect of cafeteria diet feeding. By contrast, treatment with propranolol, a beta-receptor antagonist, prevented the increase in Na+-K+-ATPase during cafeteria diet feeding.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

1. The effects of feeding a palatable and varied ‘cafeteria’ diet on energy balance were studied in young (5·5 week) and adult (5·5 month) lean male Zucker (+/?) rats.2. Estimates of metabolizable energy (ME) intake derived from food composition tables were almost identical to values obtained from bomb calorimetry of foods, urine and faeces, and ME intake was elevated by approximately 73% in all ‘cafeteria’ animals compared to stock-fed controls.3. ‘Cafeteria’ feeding had no effect on the body-weight of young rats but induced excess weight gains in the older animals and resulted in increased deposition of fat and energy in both groups. Energy expenditure, calculated from ME intake and body-energy gain, was elevated by 77 and 57% in young and adult cafeteria rats respectively. The energy cost of fat deposition could account for only a small proportion of this increased expenditure.4. The present results confirm previous findings in another strain of rat and show that the increased energy expenditure (i.e. diet-induced thermogenesis, DIT) which occurs in response to hyperphagia is not restricted to young animals but is also seen in older rats. Measurements of resting oxygen consumption after injections of noradrenaline or a β-adrenergic antagonist (propranolol), and changes in brown adipose tissue mass are consistent with the suggestion that the DIT of ‘cafeteria’-fed rats results from sympathetic activation of brown fat.

This study aims to determine the financial position and financial performance Cooperative Sucofindo Jaya (KOPSUCOFINDO JAYA) from fiscal year 2009-2011 through a comparative analysis / comparisons and ratio analysis. From the research, the authors obtained a picture that results of the financial position and financial performance of KOPSUCOFINDO JAYA as follows: (1) To Horizontal Analysis of the Balance Sheet shows the overall unfavorable developments as the rise of short-term debt experienced a greater percentage increase than the increase in current assets (2) For Horizontal Analysis of the SHU, SHU in 2010 an increase of 125.38% compared to 2009 and in 2011 increased by 282.47% compared to 2009, but this increase was not followed by a reduction in the burden of cost of goods, especially business and this increase was obtained from the contribution percentage increase in other income. (3) For Vertical Analysis of the Balance Sheet shows that in terms of assets, current assets are assets that make up the largest component but also cause considerable investment value embedded in current assets and also showed asset turnover, receivables turnover and working capital is very low under 1 times. (4) For the SHU Vertical analysis shows that income JAYA KOPSUCOFINDO more than 85% absorbed in the Cost of Goods. (5) For liquidity analysis showed that highly liquid KOPSUCOFINDO JAYA obtain an average value above 400%. (6) For solvency analysis shows that the performance is not good / not solvable because the results of the analysis LITA average of above 95%, Total Debt to Equity Ratio in the top 2.000%, and Net Worth Debt Ratio to average below 4%. (7) For activity ratios indicate that the performance is not good for Turnover of Assets value of 1 times. (8) For the rentability analysis KOPSUCOFINDO JAYA show results for ROA of 0.86% (2009), 1.31% (2010), 1.18% (2011), ROE in 2009 is 14.81%, 26.43% in 2010 and 2011 amounted to 31.11%, for the ROI of 0.56% in 2009, in 2010 was 0.96% and by 0.93% in 2011. (9) For the analysis of profitability, for the analysis of GPM in 2009 amounted to 1.49%, in 2010 of 2.31% and 3.92% in 2011. Abstract: Chlorine is a green halogen-shaped halogen gas at normal temperature and serves as bleach, stain remover and disinfectant. Chlorine is now widely used for bleaching rice so that less quality rice looks like quality rice. Chlorine is very toxic and causes mucous membrane irritation, highly reactive and very powerful oxidizer. The purpose of this research was to determine the difference of chlorine level in chlorinated rice washed once, twice and 3 times. The sample in this study amounted to 11 samples calculated by replication formula. Each sample was treated 3 times, ie 1 washed once, 2 washed twice and washed 3 times. The samples then examined by iodometric titration method. Based on the results of the study using ANOVA test, 11 samples obtained the average value of chlorine after washed once amount of 0.0176%, after washed twice amount of 0.0111%, and after washed 3 times amount of 0.0052% with the value significance p = 0.03 (p <0.05) at 95% confidence level which means there was a significant difference between chlorine levels in chlorinated rice washed once, twice and 3 times.Abstrak: Klorin merupakan unsur halogen berbentuk gas berwarna kuning kehijauan pada suhu normal danberfungsi sebagai pemutih, penghilang noda maupun desinfektan. Klorin sekarang banyak digunakan untuk bahan pemutih beras agar beras yang kurang berkualitas tampak seperti beras berkualitas. Klorin sangat toksik dan menyebabkan iritasi membran mukosa, sangat reaktif dan merupakan oksidator yang sangat kuat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini ialah untuk mengetahui perbedaan kadar klorin pada beras berklorin yang dicuci sebanyak 1 kali, 2 kali dan 3 kali. Sampel dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 11 sampel yang dihitung dengan rumus replikasi. Setiap sampel diberi perlakuan sebanyak 3 kali, yaitu 1 kali pencucian, 2 kali pencucian dan 3 kali pencucian. Sampel penelitian kemudian diperiksa dengan metode titrasi iodometri. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian menggunakan uji Anova secara komputerisasi terhadap 11 sampel diperoleh nilai rata-rata kadar klorin setelah 1 kali pencucian sebesar 0,0176 %, setelah 2 kali pencucian sebesar 0,0111 %, dan setelah 3 kali pencucian sebesar 0,0052 % dengan nilai signifkansi p = 0,03 (p<0,05) pada tingkat kepercayaan 95% yang artinya ada perbedaan yang bermakna antara kadar klorin pada beras berklorin yang dicuci sebanyak 1 kali, 2 kali dan 3 kali.

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of CSM strategies on comprehension reading skills in classes V Padokan 2 Elementary School. The research method used is a quasi-experimental method. In this study the subjects of the study were VA class students as the control class and V C as the experimental class with 28 VA and VC class students. Quantitative data analysis technique used is the calculation of independent sample t-test. Based on data analysis and discussion, researchers can conclude that CSM strategies are more effective than conventional methods of reading comprehension learning. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant difference between the experimental class and the control class as evidenced by the results of the independent sample t-test obtained by the value of Asymp. Sig (2-Tailed) 0.014 <0.05. CSM strategy is an effective learning strategy seen from the average value of the experimental class posstest which is 81.61 higher than the control class average value of 72.96.

Background/Aim. The vertical dimension of occlusion is a very important parameter for proper reconstruction of the relationship between the jaws. The literature describes many methods for its finding, from the simple, easily applicable clinically, to quite complicated, with the use of one or more devices for determination. The aim of this study was to examine the possibility of determining the vertical dimension of occlusion using the vocals ?O? and ?E? with the control of values o btained by applying cognitive functions. Methods. This investigation was performed with the two groups of patients. The first group consisted of 50 females and 50 males, aged 18 to 30 years. In this group the distance between the reference points (on top of the nose and chin) was measured in the position of the mandible in the vertical dimension of occlusion, the vertical dimension at rest and the pronunciation of the words ?OLO? and ?ELE?. Checking the correctness of the particular value for the word ?OLO? was also performed by the phonetic method with the application of cognitive exercises when the patients counted from 89 to 80. The obtained difference in the average values i n determining the vertical dimension of occlusion and the ?OLO? and ?ELE? in the first group was used as the reference for determining the vertical dimension of occlusion in the second group of patients. The second group comprised of 31 edentulous persons (14 females and 17 males), aged from 54 to 85 years who had been made a complete denture. Results. The average value obtained for the vertical dimension of rest for the entire sample was 2.16 mm, for the word ?OLO? for the entire sample was 5.51 mm and for the word ?ELE? for the entire sample was 7.47 mm. There was no statistically significant difference between the genders for the value of the vertical dimension at rest, ?ELE? and ?OLO?. There was a statistically significant difference between the values f or the vertical dimension at rest, ?OLO? and ?ELE? for both genders. There was a statistically significant correlation between the value for the vertical dimension at rest, ?OLO? and ?ELE?, for both groups of subjects. Conclusion. Determining the vertical dimension of occlusion requires 5.5 mm subtraction from the position of the mandible in pronunciation of the word ?OLO? or 7.5 mm in pronunciation of the word ?ELE?.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a major noncommunicable disease. While mortality rates are increasing, the costs of managing the disease are also increasing. The all-India average monthly expenditure per person (pppm) is reported to be ₹ 1,098.25, which translates to an annual expenditure of ₹13,179 per person. Purpose: While a number of studies have gone into the aspect of the cost of disease management, we do not find any study which has pan-India reach. We also do not find studies that focus on differences (if any) between rural and urban areas, age or on the basis of gender. We planned to report the cost of illness (COI) in diabetes individuals as compared to others from the data of a pan-India trial. Methods: Government of India commissioned the Indian Yoga Association to study the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in India in 2017. As part of the questionnaire, the cost of treatment was also captured. Data collected from 25 states and union territories were analyzed using the analysis of covriance (ANCOVA) test on SPSS version 21. Results: There was a significant difference ( P < .05) between the average expenses per person per month (pppm) of individuals with self-reported known diabetes (₹1,357.65 pppm) and others (unknown and/or nondiabetes individuals–₹ 999.91 pppm). Similarly, there was a significant difference between rural (₹2,893 pppm) and urban (₹4,162 pppm) participants and between those below (₹1,996 pppm) and above 40 years (₹5,059 pppm) of age. Conclusion: This preliminary report has shown that the COI because of diabetes is significantly higher than others pointing to an urgent need to promote disease-preventive measures.
