In this Letter, we study the popular parametric variation chaos control and state-feedback methodologies in chaos control, and point out for the first time that they are actually equivalent in the sense that there exist diffeomorphisms that can convert one to the other for most smooth chaotic systems. Detailed conversions are worked out for typical discrete chaotic maps (logistic, Hénon) and continuous flows (Rösller, Lorenz) for illustration. This unifies the two seemingly different approaches from the physics and the engineering communities on chaos control. This new perspective reveals some new potential applications such as chaos synchronization and normal form analysis from a unified mathematical point of view.

AbstractThe relationship between Sicily and the eastern Mediterranean – namely Aegean, Cyprus and the Levant – represents one of the most intriguing facets of the prehistory of the island. The frequent and periodical contact with foreign cultures were a trigger for a gradual process of socio-political evolution of the indigenous community. Such relationship, already in inception during the Neolithic and the Copper Age, grew into a cultural phenomenon ruled by complex dynamics and multiple variables that ranged from the Mid-3rd to the end of the 2nd millennium BCE. In over 1,500 years, a very large quantity of Aegean and Levantine type materials have been identified in Sicily alongside with example of unusual local material culture traditionally interpreted as resulting from external influence. To summarize all the evidence during such long period and critically address it in order to attempt historical reconstructions is a Herculean labor.Twenty years after Sebastiano Tusa embraced this challenge for the first time, this paper takes stock on two decades of new discoveries and research reassessing a vast amount of literature, mostly published in Italian and in regional journals, while also address the outcomes of new archaeometric studies. The in-depth survey offers a new perspective of general trends in this East-West relationship which conditioned the subsequent events of the Greek and Phoenician colonization of Sicily.

Abstract. The aim of this work is to investigate the relationship between indicators of cicatricial digestion and linearity of cows. Methods. The research was carried out in the breeding enterprises of the Sverdlovsk region on the livestock of Ural-type cows. Cicatricial fluid was collected with an oropharyngeal rubber probe, and a wooden yaw was also used. Cicatricial content was assessed at the Chelyabinsk Interregional Veterinary Laboratory. The pH value was determined by the electrometric method, VFA – in the Markgam apparatus, ammonia – by the microdiffusion method. Ciliates – in Goryaev’s chamber and under a microscope, bacteria – under a microscope with the addition of sodium chloride solution. Statistical data processing was carried out in the Microsoft Office Excel 2010 program. Results. In terms of the number of ciliates and bacteria in the rumen fluid, the Montwick Chieftain cows, characterized by high productive qualities, had an advantage. In terms of pH and VFA, the Vis Back Ideal line was the best. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of the amount of ammonia in the rumen. The best animals from the point of view of influence on cicatricial metabolism were the animals of the Vis Back Ideal and Montwick Chieftain lineage. Scientific novelty. Studies have shown that linearity is associated with cicatricial digestion in cows. The relationship of bull lines with indicators of cicatricial metabolism of cows has been determined for the first time. The food in the rumen is digested due to the action of bacteria, ciliates, and fungi. An environment has been created in the rumen for the active development of microflora. Bacteria are able to synthesize amino acids and vitamins. The proventriculus can contain up to 50 species of ciliates.

The paper presents the theory of legal system polycentricism from a new perspective, i.e. the one integrating essentially contradictory concepts which explain this phenomenon in the context of the Polish jurisprudence. Apart from attempting to establish “common features” of these well-known concepts explaining the essence of polycentricism in the legal field, the presented point of view pertains to defining the relationship between the phenomenon of polycentricism from the legal discourse theory perspective and the Luhmann’s systems theory. The paper aims to prove the thesis that at present the legal system is internally taking on (transforming into) the heterogeneous type of internal structure due to interaction with already polycentric non-juristic domain, i.e. the social one.

The article describes the structure of the Kalmyk folk costume with the release of a headdress as a sign. The author includes the Kalmyk folk costume in the context of the relationship between man and the universe, for the first time considering it from the point of view of a complex of art history, cultural, aesthetic, semiotic approaches to folk art. The article presents the folk costume as a sign system and a phenomenon of art, caused by the material and spiritual culture of the ethnos. The connection of the spiritual and ethical foundations and artistic traditions of the Kalmyk people is the basis of its analysis and interpretation. The results reveal the spatial reference mark headdress and the entire system as a whole suit. In comparison, structural parts of the traditional costume and dwellings found their identity in the creation of the material sphere of human existence, the universal space segmentation. The symbolism of the Buddhist world as a late formation of the traditional culture of the Kalmyks distinctive way implemented in the design of the headdress hadzhilga . These results are significant for the figurative-symbolic and worldview interpretation of the traditional and modern art of the Eurasian nomadic peoples and the peoples of the Buddhist area.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of supplier development activities (SDAs) in the context of three major performance outcomes (POs), i.e. supplier performance improvement (SPI), buyer’s competitive advantage improvement (BCAI) and buyer-supplier relationship improvement (BSRI). Design/methodology/approach A survey was conducted of 214 manufacturing organizations and the data were analyzed using factor analysis, correlation analysis and multiple hierarchical regression analysis. Findings This paper categorizes the identified 28 SDAs and 33 POs into five and three major categories of SDAs and POs, respectively. The results indicate a significant relationship between each aspect of SDAs and POs, except investment. The effect of each category of SDA is determined through a developed framework. Research limitations/implications This present study analyzes the SDAs and POs from the buyer’s point of view. A paired buyer and supplier data may provide some additional information about the relationship between SDAs and POs. Practical implications The outcome of this study will provide significant information for managers and academicians who are involved in outsourcing. Originality/value For the first time, the relationship and effect of each category of SDAs was analyzed in combination with three major POs, i.e. SPI, BSRI and BCAI.

ABSTRACT Historically, mucosal immunity—i.e., the portion of the immune system that protects an organism’s various mucous membranes from invasion by potentially pathogenic microbes—has been studied in single-cell epithelia in the gastrointestinal and upper respiratory tracts of vertebrates. Phylogenetically, mucosal surfaces appeared for the first time about 560 million years ago in members of the phylum Cnidaria. There are remarkable similarities and shared functions of mucosal immunity in vertebrates and innate immunity in cnidarians, such as Hydra species. Here, we propose a common origin for both systems and review observations that indicate that the ultimately simple holobiont Hydra provides both a new perspective on the relationship between bacteria and animal cells and a new prism for viewing the emergence and evolution of epithelial tissue-based innate immunity. In addition, recent breakthroughs in our understanding of immune responses in Hydra polyps reared under defined short-term gnotobiotic conditions open up the potential of Hydra as an animal research model for the study of common mucosal disorders.

The joint exercise of parental right was introduced as a form of custody also in situations in which a traditional form of custody meant exercise of parental right by one parent. This concept strives to differentiate the relationship between parents from the relationship between spouses (common law partners) by, from the legal point of view, preserving the relationship between parents and the child the same or at least similar in case marital relationship changes, having regard to the fact that parental rights and duties do not cease with the divorce and that a child needs both parents for his/her development. Serbian Family Act 2005 has for the first time introduced a possibility of joint exercise of parental right even in case when parents do not live together (Article 75/2). Since this form of custody is a novelty in the Serbian family law, Serbian Family Act provides that agreement between the parents is a necessary precondition for this form of parental care. Beside parents and the court, the child has a very important role in the decision-making concerning his/her custody in case parents do not live together. In the comparative law, joint custody is being part of the evolutional progress. At the time when this concept was introduced, agreement between parents was a precondition for the joint custody. Today, many legal systems do not consider parental agreement on joint custody as a precondition for this form of custody after divorce.

The discovery of topological insulators and semimetals has opened up a new perspective to understand materials. Owing to the special band structure and enlarged Berry curvature, the linear responses are strongly enhanced in topological materials. The interplay of topological band structure and symmetries plays a crucial role for designing new materials with strong and exotic new electromagnetic responses and provides promising mechanisms and new materials for the next generation of technological applications. We review the fundamental concept of linear responses in topological materials from the symmetry point of view and discuss their potential applications.

Abstract In recent years, the relationship between Italy and the European Union (EU) has worsened due to the emergence of an increasingly negative attitude towards the question of European integration. The growth in citizens' disaffection with, and hostility towards, the political elites is part of a more general trend witnessed throughout the EU. From this point of view, an understanding of whether, and in what way, the role of Prime Minister (PM) has been affected by this change of perspective, especially following the various crises affecting the EU in the last 10 years, would be worthwhile we believe. This article examines the political positions of all PM during the so-called Second Republic (1994–now), by means of a longitudinal content analysis. This analysis reveals that after 2008, and for the first time in the history of the Italy–EU relationship, PMs' speeches have included sharp criticism of the EU. In particular, two PMs (Renzi and Conte) have clearly rejected those conditionality mechanisms implied by the EU. The results of this study confirm the start of a phase of strong conflict/politicization in regard to the EU and its institutional functioning. This article contributes to the broader literature concerning the study of the relationship between political elites and the EU, by focusing for the first time not simply on party leaders but on one of the most important institutional roles in the Italian political system (the Presidenza del Consiglio).

Emile Durkheim introduced the concept of anomie in the field of sociology for the first time. According to Durkheim anomie is equal with normlessness or detachment from social standards and values in society. Hubert Selby in his novel Requiem for a Dream depicts the theme of addiction which influences the life of four characters as a demonstration of the results of keeping distance from the norms. This paper intends to examine the relationship between anomic situation with disintegration and fall of idealism in Selby's novel from Durkheim's point of view.
