Visualizing Narrative: Lutheran Theology in the Engravings of Lucas Cranach

The early stage of the Reformation in Germany was marked by an iconoclastic movement inspired by radical reformers. In the scientific literature, iconoclasm is often interpreted as a phenomenon that became a catastrophe for German art, as it halted its renaissance progress. The purpose of the article is to prove that the Lutheran Reformation did not become an event that stopped the development of German art, but, on the contrary, gave a new impetus to its development, especially the art of engraving. Throughout the history of Christianity, there have been discussions about what church art should be, in what form it should exist and what function it should carry. In the days of the Reformation, these discussions flared up with renewed vigor. Most reformers held the view that the church needed to be cleansed of works of art that were seen as a legacy of Catholicism. The iconoclast movement that transitioned into church pogroms and the destruction of works of art in Wittenberg in early 1522 prompted Martin Luther to publicly express his disagreement with the radical reformers and to express his own position on the fine arts in the reformed church. In a series of sermons from March 9 to 16, 1522 (Invocavit), Martin Luther recommended the destruction of images that became objects of worship, but considered it appropriate to leave works of art that illustrate biblical stories or reformation ideas. For Luther, the didactic significance of images became a decisive argument. The main points of the series of Luther’s sermons (Invocavit) show that he not only condemned the vandalism of iconoclasts, but also argued that the presence of works of art in the church does not contradict the Bible, but, on the contrary, helps to better understand important truths. It is noted that the result of Luther's tolerant position was the edition of the September Bible (1522) illustrated by Lucas Cranach's engravings. The reviewed narrative and visual sources prove that due to Reformation the art of engraving received a new impetus, and Lutheranism was formed not only as a church of the culture of the word, but also of the culture of the eye. It was established that the main requirement for art was strict adherence to the narrative, which is observed in the analyzed engravings of Lucas Cranach. It is considered that the engravings to the book of Revelation are characterized not only by the accuracy of the text, but also by sharpened polemics, adding a new sound to biblical symbols, sharp criticism of the Catholic Church, and visualization of the main enemies of the Reformed Church. It is proved that the polemical orientation of the engravings spurred interest and contributed to the commercial success of the September Bible. The rejection of traditional plots by protestant artists did not become overly destructive, and in some cases, it even led to the enrichment of European visual culture.

FOR A DISCUSSION ABOUT THE “MUNICIPAL FILTER”

The model for elections of top officials of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, which was restored by amendments to the federal legislation in 2012, differs significantly from the previous regional election campaigns and establishes special conditions for the participation of candidates. These include support for the nomination of a candidate for the post of head of a constituent entity of the Russian Federation by representatives of local authorities elected by the population - municipal deputies and heads of municipal formations, which very quickly received the informal name “municipal filter” among lawyers, political scientists and publicists. Among other novelties of electoral legislation, it is this requirement that has been the subject of sharp criticism for ten years. Materials and methods. In preparing the article, the authors analyzed federal legislation, by-laws, election campaign materials, and judicial practice of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation. The main methods used are technical-legal, formal-legal, comparative-legal. Results. The requirement to support the nomination of a candidate for the post of the highest official of a constituent entity of the Russian Federation can be assessed as a complex and contradictory procedure. It performs important functions in controlling the electoral process, ensuring the unity of the Russian public power system, developing local self-government, and strengthening the political and party systems. However, in modern Russian political conditions, the prevalence of a certain political force in local self-government bodies, the “municipal filter” is being transformed from a legal procedure into an instrument of unfair political struggle. Conclusions. The study substantiates the need to preserve and reform the “municipal filter” in terms of reducing the minimum and maximum levels of support for candidates and reducing the territorial coverage of municipalities in the region.

The Conception of the Formation of the Personality of the Heroes in the Novel by H. Böll ‘The Clown’ and the Novel by F. M. Dostoevsky ‘The Adolescent’: Creative Parallels

Through a comparative analysis of the images and conceptions of the formation of the personality of Hans Schnier and Arkady Dolgoruky, the paper reveals the signs of a literary dialogue between H. Böll and F. M. Dostoevsky in terms of disclosing the theme of upbringing in the novels ‘The Clown’ and ‘The Adolescent’. It was found that in both works the process of the formation of the characters and world views of the central characters is shown unevenly through the representation of the key moments of their biography which evoked a strong emotional response from the characters. In the above-mentioned novels, similar methods of psychologism are used: confession, recollection. At the same time, H. Böll endows his text with more acute social problems than F. M. Dostoevsky. His hero is categorical in his assessments and polemic in relation to the society around him, the morality of the majority of whose representatives he not only finds unacceptable, but also castigates. Based on this, we can conclude that H. Böll reconstructs the model of the hero’s personal development in the novel ‘The Clown’ by not only taking into account the traditions of the Russian classic author, but also in the context of sharp criticism of the realities of his contemporary society.

John Calvin, Bernardino Ochino, and Italian ‘Heretics’

Until recently, scholars have often framed the relationship between John Calvin and the radical wing of the Italian Reformation through the lens of a dialectical and rather violent clash. Springing from different cultural backgrounds, this confrontation reached its peak after the condemnation of the anti-trinitarian Michael Servetus in Geneva (1553), when some Italian exiles religionis causa gathered in Basel to express a sharp criticism towards Calvin’s intransigence and dogmatism in dealing with internal dissent. Recent works have led to a deconstruction of this enduring interpretation and offered a more complex view of Calvin’s personality, theology, and agency. As the chapter shows, such a problematizing approach inspires a less teleological reading of the ambiguous but rich entanglement between the Genevan Reformer and the Italian ‘heretics’, suggesting that, through the confrontation with the sceptical rationalism and the elusive spiritualism of his critics, Calvin’s theology reached its full maturity and clarity of expression.

The therapeutic transaction agreement is an agreement between a doctor and a patient which is a legal relationship. Therefore, it gives birth to rights and obligations between doctors and patients which have the potential to cause medical disputes between doctors and patients (malpractice). There are two ways to process medical dispute resolution, namely litigation (through court) and non-litigation (outside court). The litigation process is costly and time-consuming, and often results in one party being the winner and the other party being the loser. The protracted process in court causes a lot of sharp criticism of the judiciary when carrying out its functions, therefore it is necessary to improve the judicial system towards being effective and efficient, especially in medical disputes between doctors and patients. So the medical dispute mediation route between doctors and patients can be an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) that is more effective and efficient. The purpose of this study was to analyze the elements of a therapeutic agreement based on contract law in the Civil Code. And Analyzing mediation as an alternative to dispute resolution of therapeutic agreements for doctors and patients. To achieve this objective, research was conducted using normative juridical legal research methods. So this research approach uses the Statute Approach or research approach to legal products, by examining all laws and regulations related to what will be researched.

The article deals with the question of the value system of paremiology in The "words of edification" of the great Kazakh poet Abay Kunanbayev. Many words (Kara Soz") and Proverbs used by Abai reflect the main values of the Kazakh people. Proverbs in "Kara Soz" are divided into two large groups: Proverbs that represent positive values, and Proverbs that he treated with sharp criticism. Such values as peace and harmony, unity, people, education, science and self-improvement of the Kazakh people, their spiritual and physical development, work and skill – these are the values that Abai considered a moral guideline for his people. In any language, there are many well-aimed, expressive, national-specific Proverbs and sayings. Being the property of one nation, they can pass into the language of another nation, enriching it, expanding the reader's horizons, turning into an integral part of the vocabulary of the language that borrowed them. It should be noted that many of Abai's thoughts were fixed in the Kazakh language as well-aimed and winged words and joined the ranks of Proverbs and sayings.
