Sepsis has high incidence and mortality rates around the world. The role of cardiac depression in myocardial dysfunction during sepsis remains to be elucidated. This review attempts to summarize our understanding of the anatomical, histopathological, and pathophysiological mechanisms behind cardiac dysfunction. Biomarkers to detect cardiac depression have been used to recognize developing problems, but the actual impact of these tools remains unclear.

Since the emergence of a novel aquatic bird Flu agent in humans may be detected in near future, approaches to early diagnosis and prompt therapy are welcome. The swine-origin influenza virus (S-OIV) detected in April 2009 in Mexico, Canada and USA exhibited an unique genome composition not shown before. The emerging new Flu agent can cause outbreaks of febrile respiratory infection from mild to severe diseases throughout the world. This abstract has the purpose to emphasize the possibility of tracking the new influenza virus in the most affected regions of the world and to avoid a sad toll flu-related deaths that might occur. The possible causes of high incidence and mortality rates are discussed as well as their implications on the public opinion and the prevention campaign.

Uveal melanoma (UM) is currently classified by the World Health Organisation as a melanoma caused by risk factors other than cumulative solar damage. However, factors relating to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) susceptibility such as light-coloured skin and eyes, propensity to burn, and proximity to the equator, frequently correlate with higher risk of UM. These risk factors echo those of the far more common cutaneous melanoma (CM), which is widely accepted to be caused by excessive UVR exposure, suggesting a role of UVR in the development and progression of a proportion of UM. Indeed, this could mean that countries, such as Australia, with high UVR exposure and the highest incidences of CM would represent a similarly high incidence of UM if UVR exposure is truly involved. Most cases of UM lack the typical genetic mutations that are related to UVR damage, although recent evidence in a small minority of cases has shown otherwise. This review therefore reassesses statistical, environmental, anatomical, and physiological evidence for and against the role of UVR in the aetiology of UM.

Both intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) have been implicated in neutrophil-mediated lung and liver injury during sepsis. However, the role of these adhesion molecules as well as the contribution of neutrophils in myocardial dysfunction during sepsis remains to be determined. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and neutrophils in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced myocardial dysfunction. Mice were subjected to LPS (0.5 mg/kg ip) or vehicle (normal saline), and left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP) was determined by the Langendorff technique. LVDP was depressed by nearly 40% at 6 h after LPS. Immunofluorescent staining revealed a temporal increase in myocardial ICAM-1/VCAM-1 expression and neutrophils after LPS. Antibody blockade of VCAM-1 reduced myocardial neutrophil accumulation and abrogated LPS-induced cardiac dysfunction. Antibody blockade or absence of ICAM-1 (gene knockout) also abrogated LPS-induced cardiac dysfunction but did not reduce neutrophil accumulation. Neutrophil depletion (vinblastine or antibody) did not protect from LPS-induced myocardial dysfunction. Our results suggest that although endotoxemic myocardial dysfunction requires both ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, it occurs independent of neutrophil accumulation.

Purpose Breast cancer is among the leading causes of death resulting from cancer in Caribbean women. Studies examining exogenous and genetically predetermined endogenous risk factors are critical to define breast cancer susceptibility in Caribbean women. The purpose of this systematic review is to assess the existing scientific literature in the last 42 years (1975 to 2017) to describe the body of research generated for the population of this region and determine future research directions. Methods We selected published research articles using a combination of definite keyword searches in PubMed. Only articles presenting the Caribbean population as the focus of their research objectives were included in this analysis. Results Studies on breast cancer in the Caribbean are limited. A majority of publications on Caribbean populations were descriptive, focusing on cancer trends and clinicopathologic factors. High incidence and mortality rates for breast cancer are reported for the region, and there seem to be some differences between countries in the frequency of cases according to age at presentation. A limited number of epidemiologic, behavioral, and genetic and molecular studies were conducted in more recent years. Conclusion A regional strategy for cancer registration is needed for the Caribbean to address possible underestimates of breast cancer incidence. Furthermore, behavioral, molecular, genetic, and epidemiologic investigations of breast cancer are critical to address the concerns related to currently described high incidence and mortality rates in the Caribbean.

The coronavirus 2019 first broke out on December 17, 2019 in Wuhan, China, and on March 11, 2020, it was announced as a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization. Despite nutritious diets and promising vaccines, health tips such as wearing a mask, social distancing, home quarantine, and not traveling are still the best ways to control the spread of COVID-19.While the widespread prevalence of COVID-19, severe restrictions, lack of definitive treatment, and the high infection and mortality rates have led to cognitive psychological disorders among the general population of the world. One of the epidemic consequences of COVID-19 syndrome in people who have defeated the coronavirus was psychological disorders. Considering the role of mental health in boosting the immune system, improving the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine and accelerating the treatment process of patients, it is suggested that in the post-COVID era, more attention be paid to the psychological health of the community.

Background. Myocardial depression in sepsis is common, and it is associated with higher mortality. In recent years, the hypothesis that the myocardial dysfunction during sepsis could be mediated by ischemia related to decreased coronary blood flow waned and a complex mechanism was invoked to explain cardiac dysfunction in sepsis. Oxidative stress unbalance is thought to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of cardiac impairment in septic patients.Aim. In this paper, we review the current literature regarding the pathophysiology of cardiac dysfunction in sepsis, focusing on the possible role of oxidative-nitrosative stress unbalance and mitochondria dysfunction. We discuss these mechanisms within the broad scenario of cardiac involvement in sepsis.Conclusions. Findings from the current literature broaden our understanding of the role of oxidative and nitrosative stress unbalance in the pathophysiology of cardiac dysfunction in sepsis, thus contributing to the establishment of a relationship between these settings and the occurrence of oxidative stress. The complex pathogenesis of septic cardiac failure may explain why, despite the therapeutic strategies, sepsis remains a big clinical challenge for effectively managing the disease to minimize mortality, leading to consideration of the potential therapeutic effects of antioxidant agents.

Background: The increasing incidence and mortality rate of HCC is a major concern, especially for developing countries of the world. Hence, extensive research is being carried out in order to explore new approaches for developing successful therapeutic strategies for HCC. The controversial role of oxidative stress in the prognosis and treatment of various diseases such as cancer has become the area of great interest and intrigue for many scientists throughout the world. Objective: We aim to investigate the role of induced oxidative stress on the suppression of HCC Huh-7 cancerous cells as therapeutic approach. Methods: Induction of oxidative stress via H2O2 treatment produced cell cytotoxicity in a dose dependent manner and also led to the over expression of GSTP-1 and PRX-2. The expression of GSTP-1 and PRX-2 was compared in HCC Huh-7 treated, untreated cells and normal hepatocytes using immunocytochemistry. Furthermore, the effects of oxidative stress on cell cycle arrest were also studied through flow cytometry. Results: Our study demonstrated the inhibition of cancer cell proliferation as a result of H2O2 induction by arresting the cell cycle at G2 phase. Conclusion: The induction of oxidative stress could be a potential therapeutic approach for treating HCC in the future. GSTP-1 and PRX-2 can serve as substantial therapeutic targets for the treatment of HCC.

Aims. More than half of the patients with sepsis would develop cardiac dysfunction, which is termed as sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction (SIMD). Previous studies suggest that autophagy may play an important role in SIMD. The present study investigated whether miR-214-3p could attenuate SIMD by inhibiting autophagy. Main Methods. In this article, we investigated the role of autophagy in a mouse model of cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). The structure and function of hearts harvested from the mice were evaluated. Myocardial autophagy levels were detected with immunohistochemical, immunofluorescent, and Western blot. Key Findings. miR-214-3p can alleviate SIMD in septic mice by inhibiting the level of cardiac autophagy to attenuate myocardial dysfunction. Moreover, this study showed that miR-214-3p inhibited autophagy by silencing PTEN expression in the myocardial tissues of septic mice. Significance. This study showed that miR-214-3p attenuated SIMD through myocardial autophagy inhibition by silencing PTEN expression and activating the AKT/mTOR pathway. The present findings supported that miR-214-3p may be a potential therapeutic target for SIMD.

Myocardial infarction (MI), one of the cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) with high incidence and mortality rate, seriously endangers human health. The poor ways of fully repairing and regenerating the infarcted myocardium may have an impact on people's life quality, therefore scientists have devoted continuously to exploring the way of myocardial repair after MI so as to strive for a better prognosis of these patients. In recent years, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have been identified and become one of the exciting fields of research in the development of CVDs. In a wide range of areas, more and more research has found that ncRNAs play important roles in myocardial repair. This review mainly introduces some strategies for myocardial repair and the role or mechanism of microRNA (miRNA), long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), circular RNA (circRNA) and circRNA/lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory axis in the repair of myocardial tissue after MI, in order to build a better understanding and find new therapeutic targets for MI.

Generally, carcinoma of the gallbladder is an extremely unusual neoplasm, however, high incidence rates have been reported in certain parts of the world. The role of certain factors such as genetic susceptibility, lifestyle and infections of gallbladder in causing carcinogenesis is still not clearly understood. Due to its early vague symptoms and lack of serosa in the gallbladder to slow its spread, gallbladder carcinoma typically presents at an advanced stage with a five-year survival rate of less than 5%. Pseudopancreatic cyst is an uncommon but not a rare complication of acute pancreatitis and injury to the pancreas. However, it rarely presents with carcinoma of gallbladder. We present here an unusual case of gallbladder carcinoma with pseudopancreatic cyst in a 58-year old male.
