<p>We have defined the main macroelements (Ca, Ca +, P, Mg, K, Na, Cl) in blood plasma of 29 children of the second childhood and 26-children of juvenile age with multiple caries on the background of JRA and in comparison with respectively 25 and 27 children born in the same year from a control group. It was established that the state of mineral metabolism in the blood of sick children is characterized by a significant decrease in total calcium and its ionized faction, and inorganic phosphorus in regard to healthy population of the same age, but within the physiological norm. This went to prove a possible negative impact of accompanying pathology on the state of hard tooth tissues and the role of JRA in the development of multiple cariosity.</p>

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of nanotechnology and sodium metasilicate on the content of total calcium and inorganic phosphorus and individual lipids in the blood of rabbits from 52 to 110 days of life. Studies were conducted on young rabbits of Hyla breed in the private sector. Rabbits for the study were selected at the age of 41 days on the principle of analogues, weighing 1.2–1.4 kg, were divided into six groups (control and five experimental), 6 animals (3 males and 3 females) in each. Animals were kept in with adjustable microclimate and illumination in mesh cages measuring 50×120×30 cm, in accordance with modern animal health standards. The control group rabbits were fed without restriction a balanced granular compound feed, with free access to water. Animals I, II, and III of the study groups were fed a control group diet and fed citrate silicon for 24 hours, with a corresponding rate of 25; 50 and 75 µg Si/kg body weight. Young animals of the IV and V experimental groups were fed wit diet of the control group and water was given sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3H2O) in the amount of 2.5 and 5.0 mg Si/kg body weight, respectively. The experiment lasted 68 days, including the preparatory period of 10 days, the experimental period – 58 days. In the preparatory period – at 52 days and experimental at 83 and 110 days of life (31 and 58 days of drinking additives) in 4 animals (2 males and 2 females) from the group blood samples were taken for biochemical studies. Studies have found that the concentration of total calcium in the blood plasma of rabbits III and IV study groups was higher by 9.6 and 6.4% (P < 0.05) for 58 days of the study compared with the control, indicating the stimulating effect of the organic compound silicon to activate the processes of assimilation of this macronutrient in the body of young rabbits. Silicone citrate in the large test quantities and sodium metasilicate in the blood plasma of animals of III, IV and V experimental groups respectively increased the level of inorganic phosphorus by 35.7; 28.5 and 35.7% (P < 0.05) than controls at day 58 of the study. In the final study period, the ratio of Calcium to Phosphorus in the animals of the II – V experimental groups was in the range of 2.0–1.73: 1, indicating a more pronounced effect of silicon compounds on the metabolism of Phosphorus during a longer period of supplementation. The content of triacylglycerols in the blood plasma of rabbits II and III of the experimental groups was lower (P < 0.05) at 31 and 58 days of the study compared with the control. The results obtained may indicate the activation of the processes of metabolic accumulation of plastic components of cell membranes and energy needs of body tissues. The use of silica organic compound reduced the cholesterol content by 37% (P < 0.05) in the blood of rabbits of the III experimental group at 31 days of the study. Whereas at the final stage of the experiment in animals II; In the 3rd and 4th research groups, its level was lower by 43.4; 36.9 and 42.2% (P < 0.05) compared to the control, indicating greater use of cholesterol by the organism with silica organic compound.

Under present-day conditions of market economy, the requirements to the quality and quantity of livestock products increase significantly, and this leads to significant intensification of production and, as a consequence, to the development of metabolic disorders including ketosis in highly productive cows. The research goal was to study protein and mineral metabolism in ketotic cows before and after calving. The studies were conducted on the Training Farm «Prigorodnoye» in the City of Barnaul in autumn and winter in comparable Black-Pied cows. Two groups of cows were formed: the trial group consisted of ketotic cows; the control group consisted of apparently healthy cows. These cows underwent clinical and biochemical examination. The biochemical study of blood determined the following: total protein, albumins, alpha-globulins, beta-globulins, gamma-globulins, total calcium, inorganic phosphorus and ketone bodies. The biochemical blood tests were run 4 times: 2 months and 1 month before calving, and in 10 days and in 1 month after calving. It was found that the change of protein metabolism indices in ketotic cows showed a profound disorder of the protein synthesis function of liver both before and after calving. The level of total calcium in the blood of ketotic cows was characterized by lower values as compared to that in healthy comparable cows. At the same time, the dynamics of inorganic phosphorus concentration change did not have significant differences between ketotic and healthy cows. Total calcium content in ketotic cows increased one month before calving while in apparently healthy cows this index increased after calving only. The concentration of ketone bodies in the blood of ketotic cows was significantly higher than that of apparently healthy cows throughout the study.

Abstract Egyptians generally pay attention to the State Awards as the most prestigious awards that Egyptian researchers can receive, including the Nile Award, the State Appreciation Award, the State Award of Excellence, and the State Encouragement Award. The current study is an attempt to investigate the role of national awards in the scientific research system, in order to identify the characteristics of Egyptian State Award laureates in science and technology during 2012–5, to determine their international literature, and to explore the implications of receiving a national award using bibliometric indicators. Scopus database was used to extract data, and the statistical software package SPSS was used to analyze. The study sample was 212 laureates, in addition to the control group of 184 researchers who closely matches the academic profiles of the laureates. The performance of the laureates and the control group was compared before and after the award by using four bibliometric indicators and the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test. The laureates produced 13,598 publications from 1958 to 2018. Most of the laureates’ literature (94.35%) were published with coauthors. The Egyptian State Award laureates often collaborate with their Saudi Arabian and American colleagues, more than others. The average values of publications, citations, and citations per publication have increased after receipt of the award, unlike the h-index. Results indicated that receiving the State Award has a negative impact on the laureates’ performance.

AbstractPatients afflicted with melanoma show lower vitamin D serum levels (VDSL) than the healthy population. This hypothesis agrees with its well-known antiproliferative features. An observational study was carried out to collect VDSL in patients suffering from melanoma. Our aim was to identify a potential connection between low VDSL and the risk to incur melanoma. Furthermore, we studied the association between VDSL at the diagnosis of melanoma and other germane prognostic factors. The population held in regard was composed of 154 patients with a diagnosis of melanoma between 2016 and 2019. These patients were retrospectively collected from our follow-up storage. We compared VDSL to clinical and pathological parameters (age, sex, tumour location, Breslow’s depth, Clark’s level, histological subtype, ulceration, et aliqua). Moreover, we recruited a control group with negative melanoma history. Mean and median of VDSL were significantly lower in the melanoma group. Instead, we found a negative association between melanoma and VDSL > 30 ng/L (OR 0.11; p < 0.0001). No correlation between VDSL and both Breslow’s depth and Clark’s level was discovered, but the VDSL comparison between thin (depth ≤ 1 mm) and thick tumours (depth > 1 mm) revealed a statistically significant difference (21.1 ± 8.2 ng/L vs 17.8 ± 8.1; p = 0.01). Moreover, VDSL were significantly lower in melanomas with mitotic rate ≥ 1/mm2 (22.1 ± 8.3 ng/L; p < 0007). Nevertheless, no connection was found between VDSL and both ulceration and positive sentinel nodes (p = 0.76; p = 0.74). Besides, our study revealed no association between VDSL and histological subtype (p = 0.161). Lower VDSL correlate with thick and high mitotic rate tumours. Future prospective studies would investigate if appropriate upkeep of suitable VDSL can decrease the risk of primary and recurrent melanoma diagnosis.

<p>Rationale: The profile of acquisition for MDMA self-administration differs from that of amphetamine and cocaine self-administration in that fewer rats meet an acquisition criterion and the latency to acquisition is longer. These characteristics of MDMA self-administration may be because it preferentially stimulates serotonin (5HT) release whereas self-administration has generally been attributed to enhanced dopamine (DA) neurotransmission. Because 5HTergic agonists are not self-administered and increased synaptic 5HT decreased self-administration of other drugs, MDMA self-administration may be initially inhibited by the pronounced 5HT response. Accordingly, the acquisition of MDMA self-administration might proceed as a result of deficits in 5HT neurotransmission and a corresponding disinhibition of DA neurotransmission.  Objective: The primary objective was to determine the role of 5HT in the acquisition and maintenance of MDMA self-administration.  Methods: MDMA-induced increases of extracellular 5HT and DA and their primary metabolites were measured in the DA terminal regions of the nucleus accumbens (NAc) using in vivo microdialysis, prior to the commencement of MDMA self-administration. The relationship between MDMA-induced increases of neurotransmitter levels and the acquisition of MDMA self-administration was assessed. A subsequent study depleted brain 5HT by administering the neurotoxin, 5,7 – DHT, or vehicle into the lateral ventricle of the left hemisphere, prior to the commencement of MDMA self-administration. The proportion of subjects that acquired MDMA self-administration and the latency to acquire MDMA self-administration was compared for the two groups. In order to determine effects of MDMA self-administration on 5HT and DA responses, behaviours that reflect 5HT and/or DA neurotransmission were measured 5 or 14 days after self-administration of 165 mg/kg MDMA, or 14 days after vehicle self-administration. These time periods were chosen because they reflect a period of 5HT deficits (5 days) and recovery (14 days). Finally, the effect of abstinence on MDMA self-administration was measured.  Results: The MDMA-induced increase of extracellular 5HT was significantly lower for the group that subsequently acquired MDMA self-administration but the MDMA-induced increase in DA was not different from the group that failed to acquire self-administration. 5, 7-DHT administration significantly decreased tissue levels of 5HT, but not DA. MDMA self-administration was facilitated by the lesion; 100% of the lesion group acquired MDMA self-administration, whereas only 50% of the control group acquired self-administration. Five days following the last MDMA self-administration session, DAergic behaviours were enhanced and 5HTergic behaviours were reduced relative to the control group. These differences in 5HTergic mediated behaviours were not apparent 14 days after self-administration but the DAergic behaviours remained elevated. The pattern of self-administration did not differ as a function of the length of the abstinence period.  Conclusions: The variability in acquisition of MDMA self-administration was related to the magnitude of the 5HT response evoked by initial exposure to MDMA. These findings suggested that predisposing differences in the 5HT response might explain differences in the variability in acquisition of MDMA self-administration. The negative impact of 5HT on the acquisition of MDMA self-administration was clearly demonstrated following a 5, 7-DHT lesion. Thus, 5HT limits the development of MDMA self-administration. With repeated exposure to self-administered MDMA, behavioural responses indicative of 5HT activation were reduced whereas behavioural indices of DA activation were increased. The maintenance of MDMA self-administration was comparable regardless of whether there was a forced abstinence period or not. These data are consistent with the hypotheses that 5HT is inhibitory to the acquisition, but not the maintenance, of MDMA self-administration. Rather, the maintenance of self-administration might reflect sensitised DA responses that became apparent following repeated exposure.</p>

Abstract The aim of the study was to determine the impact of intramuscular tagging with passive integrated transponders (PIT tags) on the basic condition and hematological and biochemical indexes of the blood plasma of juvenile European perch (initial body weight of approximately 80 g). Throughout the observation period, i.e., for 42 days following PIT implantation, the procedure was not noted to have had a negative impact on fish growth, condition, or feed conversion ratio. The blood plasma biochemical indicators analyzed did not differ statistically significantly between the fish tagged with PIT and the untagged control group. No significant impact from this procedure was noted in the hematological indexes tested. Only with regard to the mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) parameter was the value significantly lower in the fish tagged with PIT than in the control group (P ≤ 0.05). The difference determined was 1.40 pg (28.78 vs. 30.18). The MCH level in the fish tagged with PIT most probably was within the norm for this species. High tag retention (100%) and the lack of any significant impact on condition or hematological and biochemical indexes (with the exception of MCH) permits recommending this tagging method for use in juvenile perch.

model of chronic gastritis and duodenitis was conducted in 48 immature Wistar rats both gender by intragastric injection of medical bile. Control group consisted of 10 animals. After approximation model of the gastritis and duodenitis rats were divided into five subgroups: the 1st subgroup (before treatment, 9 rats), subgroup 2 (10 animals) received the antioxidant, subgroup 3 (11 animals) – received NO donator, subgroup 4 (10 animals) - received an antioxidant and NO donator, subgroup 5 (8 animals) – received the antioxidant, NO donator and calcium carbonate. In rats with gastritis and duodenitis was observed redistribution of stable metabolites of nitric oxide: decreasing level in the gingival homogenates and increasing in the blood plasma. Level of malondialdehyde and aldehyddehydrogenase in the gingival tissue increased, and in the blood plasma decreased, on a background of catalase activation; content of ketone phenilhydrazone remained in the level of control group. Decreasing markers of oxidation lipids and proteins in the blood plasma, on a background of increasing levels of catalase and nitric oxide metabolites (in 14 times), indicates about a key role of NO in the antioxidant protection of organism in a case of disease.Application of antioxidant could not impact on the indicators of oxidation lipids and proteins. It had been shown decreasing content of the nitric oxide metabolites in the gingival tissues and blood plasma. Drug correction with donator of nitric oxide have to increase markers of oxidation lipids and proteins in the gingival tissues, on a background of high catalase activity and low levels of nitric oxide metabolites. In the blood plasma content of nitric oxide metabolites was higher, which indicated about an active inflammatory process in the stomach and duodenum mucosa. Indicators of the protein molecules fragmentation and malondialdehyde were not differ from those before treatment. Level of catalase was in two times higher, than in the control group, but level of superoxide dismutase was decreased. Complex of antioxidant and donator of nitric oxide helped to stabilise the indicators of oxidation lipids and proteins, although level of nitric oxide metabolites in the gingiva was significantly decreased. Application complex from the antioxidant, donator of nitric oxide and calcium carbonate at the treatment of chronic gastritis and duodenitis restored an oxidative-antioxidative status in the blood plasma and gingival tissues, increasing the production of nitric oxide to a level in the control group.

Background Vitiligo is a well-recognized pigmentary disorder of the skin and /or mucous membrane characterized by circumscribed ivory or chalky white macules devoid of identifiable melanocytes. The pathogenesis of vitiligo is complex and still not well understood. According to autocytotoxic hypothesis, oxidative stress has been suggested to be the initial pathogenic event in melanocyte degeneration. The role of free radicals and oxidative damage in the pathophysiology of vitiligo has been documented in recent studies. Objective To evaluate the role of oxidative stress in patients with vitiligo and of healthy controls by measuring levels of the oxidant malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidants vitamin C and vitamin E in serum and catalase (CAT) in erythrocytes.Method A total of 80 clinically diagnosed cases of vitiligo and 80 control subjects were included in the study to assess the activity of MDA, vitamin C and vitamin E in serum and CAT in erythrocytes of patients and controls by using the spectrophotometric assay.Result There was statistically significant increase in the levels of MDA in patients with vitiligo compared to the control group (p<0.001). No significant difference was found in the levels of vitamin C (p=0.411) and vitamin E (p=0.771) between the patients with vitiligo and control group. The levels of CAT in the vitiligo patients were found to be significantly lower than those of controls (p<0.001).Conclusion Increased oxidative stress and decreased catalase have been observed in vitiligo patients and the data suggesting that the free radicals may be involved in the destruction of melanocytes or dysregulation of melanogenesis.Kathmandu University Medical Journal Vol.12(2) 2014: 132-136

This article highlights the role of Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI, the Council of Indonesian Ulama) in making anti-pluralism discourse and practice which are evident in its fatwa on belief (Arabic: ‘aqīda). It begins with the explanation of MUI which in the first three decades of its establishment was a fatwa body that supported pluralism, but since the downfall of the authoritarian Suharto regime in 1998, has changed its position from supporter to detractor of pluralism. This article argues that the institutionalization of anti- pluralism discourse through the MUI fatwa creates complexity especially because Indonesia contains the idea of pluralism (respecting cultural and religious diversity) in its constitution. The situation becomes more complex when the state and also Muslim organizations strengthen the position of MUI in monopolizing fatwa-making on ‘aqīda issues. The monopolization of fatwa on Islamic belief issues creates such a negative impact for religious freedom in Indonesia due to its fundamental characteristics that allow only a single judgment for the Muslim communities in understanding and interpreting their Islamic belief. Finally this article concludes the importance of Indonesia for protecting pluralism for maintaining the diversity of cultures and religions in this country.

The success of the control of obstetric diseases in cattle depends on the timely implementation of preventive measures, and, in cases of pathology, on diagnosis, effective obstetric care and treatment. A prominent place is given to blood tests among the methods that allow to objectively assess the state of health and the course of the pathological process in animals' bodies. The study of biochemical parameters of blood allows for the assessment of the state of metabolic processes in animals, with high accuracy in establishing the body's general condition and predicting complications and adjusting their prevention and therapy. The goal of the work: our work aimed to study the biochemical parameters of the blood of deep-calving heifers for the prediction, correction, and prevention of obstetric pathology during childbirth and puerperium. The research was carried out on deep-calving heifers of Holstein breed selected on the principle of analogues. Biochemical examination of blood serum was performed in the district laboratory of veterinary medicine. Indicators of protein and mineral metabolism were determined in the blood serum of deep- calving heifers: total protein, carotene, reserve alkalinity, inorganic phosphorus, albumin content, class M immunoglobulins. The obtained research results indicate that the total protein content corresponds to the norm in deep-calving heifers of the Holstein black-spotted breed. The protein coefficient exceeds the standard. There are pronounced deviations in the blood's biochemical parameters: low levels of carotene almost two-fold, reserve alkalinity – 1.91-fold, the total calcium content – by 16.08 % and the ratio of calcium to phosphorus by 17.78 %. Since the decrease in carotene content correlates with the predisposition to endometritis, the Holstein black-spotted breed's deep-calving heifers are prone to developing birth and postpartum pathology. For pregnant cows which are predisposed to postpartum obstetric pathology, that occur in weak parturition activity, failure to release the placenta, uterus subinvolution, endometritis and postpartum hypocalcaemia, unfavorable prognostication is the low concentration in blood plasma of general calcium, inorganic phosphorus and carotene.
