Identification of spider mites based on morphological characteristics is difficult because morphological differences between species may be subtle and in some groups, including the Tetranychus Dufour species, detectable only in adult males, which usually correspond to a small proportion of a population. The utility of an alternative method, phosphoglucomutase (PGM) zymogram, is demonstrated in this study. Using this method, we were able to discriminate females of each of 13 known Japanese Tetranychus species. We examined the species composition and seasonal density changes on kudzu vine [Pueraria montana var. lobata (Willd.) Sanjappa and Pradeep], a fabaceous weed, between 1997 and 1999, and on soybean [Glycine max (L.)] between 1999 and 2001. On kudzu vine, spider mite populations showed two types of seasonal fluctuation, one characterized by a single peak in September or October and the other by two peaks, in June and September. Five spider mite species were found on this plant species, with T. pueraricola Ehara & Gotoh being dominant throughout the 3-year period and accounting for 75.6–96.9% of all females. On soybean, spider mite populations showed three types of seasonal fluctuation, characterized by one peak (August), two peaks (August, November), and three peaks (June, August, October), respectively. On this plant, eight species were found, T. pueraricola being dominant in 1999 (54.7%), T. parakanzawai Ehara in 2000 (72.6%) and T. kanzawai Kishida in 2001 (69.2%). Such annual variation in dominance was probably determined by the order of invasion of soybean fields.

Experimental infection of the mouse can be used for the determination of virulence of cultures of mammalian tubercle bacilli. The relative virulence of such cultures for the mouse is approximately the same as for the guinea pig. Cultures of virulent and avirulent variants of mammalian tubercle bacilli grown in the depth of Tween 80-albumin liquid medium, on the surface of solid agar modifications of this medium, and on the surface of a liquid modification of this medium exhibit consistent morphological differences. All virulent cultures tend to form microscopically demonstrable serpentine cords of varying thickness and length consisting of highly acid-fast bacilli oriented in parallel along the long axis of the cord. The formation of cords appears to be an important factor in conditioning the ability of cultures to spread on the surface of liquid and solid media. It can be inhibited by the addition to the medium of the surface-active water-dispersible oleic acid ester, Tween 80. Avirulent variant bacilli grow in a more or less non-oriented fashion. They have never been observed to form cords under any condition of growth and are much less acid-fast than the virulent cultures when grown in Tween-albumin medium. Two strains of mammalian tubercle bacilli which are intermediate in degree of virulence between the fully virulent and the avirulent variants also exhibit intermediate morphological characteristics.

The article presents monitoring data on the identification and determination of the species composition of phytophages and phytopathogens of ordinary hop plantings in the Chuvash Republic in conditions of high temperatures and a dry summer of 2018. Studies were conducted on hop plantations in the hop-growing enterprises of the Chuvash Republic in 2018. Methods of identifying, accounting for pests and diseases were carried out in accordance with the methodological recommendations on the forecast of development and accounting of pests and diseases of agricultural plants. Observations on the species composition showed a stable structure of the species community. Against the background of high summer temperatures and droughts, there was a clear inhibition of pest populations, at the same time some species of phytophages felt well and adapted to these conditions, completed development cycles favorably, and left for wintering quite a lot. The greatest damage to hop planting this year was caused by an ordinary spider mite. The timely detection and localization of foci of spider mite gave the opportunity to prevent the spread, control the number and harmfulness.

It has been demonstrated that cross sections of bundles of hair can be effectively studied using image analysis. These studies can help to elucidate morphological differences of hair from one region of the body to another. The purpose of the present investigation was to use image analysis to determine whether morphological differences could be demonstrated between male and female human Caucasian terminal scalp hair.Hair samples were taken from the back of the head from 18 caucasoid males and 13 caucasoid females (Figs. 1-2). Bundles of 50 hairs were processed for cross-sectional examination and then analyzed using Prism Image Analysis software on a Macintosh llci computer. Twenty morphological parameters of size and shape were evaluated for each hair cross-section. The size parameters evaluated were area, convex area, perimeter, convex perimeter, length, breadth, fiber length, width, equivalent diameter, and inscribed radius. The shape parameters considered were formfactor, roundness, convexity, solidity, compactness, aspect ratio, elongation, curl, and fractal dimension.

New data was added to the oribatid species composition of the Rivnensky Nature Reserve. Overall, 62 mite species were recorded for the territory of research in this study. The species Acrogalumna longipluma, Micreremus brevipes, Licneremaeus licnophorus, Oribatella reticulata, and Porobelba spinosa were not previously listed for the Western Polissia. Of the 60 species of Lower Oribatida mites that have been recorded by other authors in that area, only 18 are found again in the Rivnensky Nature Reserve, indicating that our results are intermediate. A representative of the genus Mainothrus Choi, 1996 (Mainothrus badius (Berlese, 1905)) is found in Ukraine for the first time.

AbstractThis study deals with the determination of new natural fibers extracted from the Corypha taliera fruit (CTF) and its characteristics were reported for the potential alternative of harmful synthetic fiber. The physical, chemical, mechanical, thermal, and morphological characteristics were investigated for CTF fibers. X-ray diffraction and chemical composition characterization ensured a higher amount of cellulose (55.1 wt%) content and crystallinity (62.5%) in the CTF fiber. The FTIR analysis ensured the different functional groups of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin present in the fiber. The Scherrer’s equation was used to determine crystallite size 1.45 nm. The mean diameter, specific density, and linear density of the CTF fiber were found (average) 131 μm, 0.86 g/cc, and 43 Tex, respectively. The maximum tensile strength was obtained 53.55 MPa for GL 20 mm and Young’s modulus 572.21 MPa for GL 30 mm. The required energy at break was recorded during the tensile strength experiment from the tensile strength tester and the average values for GL 20 mm and GL 30 mm are 0.05381 J and 0.08968 J, respectively. The thermal analysis ensured the thermal sustainability of CTF fiber up to 230 °C. Entirely the aforementioned outcomes ensured that the new CTF fiber is the expected reinforcement to the fiber-reinforced composite materials.

Study of morphological characters of Tetranychus macfarlanei Baker & Pritchard and Tetranychus malaysiensis Ehara revealed high similarity by comparing all the important characters in addition to the characters pointed out by Ehara to separate those two species. Molecular phylogeny of seven Indian populations of T. macfarlanei and one population of T. malaysiensis from Philippines along with few distantly related species of Tetranychus was attempted. High degree of similarity between these two species at mitochondrial COI gene (96%) as well as ITS2 (rDNA) (96–99%) region was evident. Based on both morphological features and molecular data, T. malaysiensis is proposed as a junior synonym of T. macfarlanei based on ICZN’s law of priority. Also more female characters are prompted in this study to distinctly discriminate T. macfarlanei from its most resembling species, Tetranychus ludeni Zacher. Tetranychus macfarlanei has emerged as a pest of several cultivated crop plants in India.

In this work we studied the effect of microscopic soil fungi on some lather samples. The species composition of micromycetes inhabiting the samples under study was revealed, and an assessment of the fungal resistance of the materials under study was given. In the process of work, species of microscopic soil fungi were isolated and identified from the soil. In order to determine the degree of resistance to fungi for the infection of samples, a water-spore suspension was obtained. The leather materials were partially destroyed by microscopic fungi, and mold resistance ranged from 2 to 3 on a 5-point scale.

Abstract Study question Is there a relationship between the serum progesterone and estradiol levels and certain morphological characteristics of human endometrium during the mid-luteal phase? Summary answer Serum progesterone is associated with the stromal edema and the abundance and size of basal vacuoles in the endometrium of women during the mid-luteal phase. What is known already Progesterone and estrogen are essential hormones that are necessary to prepare the endometrium for pregnancy. Their serum concentrations during the mid-luteal phase are important criteria for prediction of successful embryo implantation. In addition, a variety of endometrial morphological markers, such as the presence of pinopodes, subnuclear and supranuclear vacuoles, glandular secretion, and stromal edema have been applied for determination of the window of implantation and endometrial receptivity. However, the relationship between these endometrial morphological characteristics and serum levels of progesterone and estradiol is still scarcely studied. Study design, size, duration This is an observational study of 98 women, 25 to 46 years of age (mean 37 years), who had a blood sample and an endometrial biopsy during the mid-lutheal phase (LH + 7) in a natural cycle. The study was conducted between August 2020 and November 2020. Participants/materials, setting, methods Serum progesterone and estradiol were measured by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) on the Cobas e411 analyser (Roche Diagnostics, Germany). The following endometrial morphological characteristics were assessed using light microscopy: (1) basal vacuoles (mean size and percentage of vacuolated glandular cells) (2) apical vacuoles (mean size and percentage of vacuolated glandular cells), (3) pinopodes (percentage of luminal epithelium covered in pinopodes), (4) glandular intraluminal secretion (6-level scoring system), (5) stromal edema (6-level scoring system). Main results and the role of chance The serum progesterone levels ranged between 0.39 and 145.3 ng/ml, with a median of 24.36 ng/ml. The serum estradiol levels varied between 26.91 and 842.89 pg/ml with a median of 124.75 pg/ml. The percentage of cells with basal vaculoles ranged from 0 to 90%, with a median of 38.57%, apical vacuoles (0–50%, 16.83%), pinopodes (0–80%, 23.87%), glandular intraluminal secretion (0–80%, 28.57%), and stromal edema (1–6, 1.42). To examine the association between the serum progesterone and estradiol and the studied endometrial morphological characteristics, the Spearman’s Rho Correlation coefficient for non-paramentric data was used. No correlation was found between serum estradiol levels and the studied morphological variables (p > 0.05). In contrast, the serum progesterone concentration showed a significant negative correlation with the percentage of glandular epithelial cells with basal vacuoles (R= - 0.28; p = 0.03), the mean size of the basal vacuoles (R= - 0.24; p = 0.5) and a significant positive correlation with the stromal edema (R = 0.34; p < 0.01). Limitations, reasons for caution The study was limited in sample size. Wider implications of the findings: The results of this study revealed that serum progesterone is more strongly associated with the occurrence of certain endometrial morphological characteristics during the mid-luteal phase than serum estradiol. These findings are valuable for development of new methods for accurate determination of the window of implantation. Trial registration number Not applicable

Using heat-balance stem flow gauges, we were able to measure directly and continuously the sap flow rates in two pairs of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] isolines differing in stomatal frequency. Plants with high stomatal frequency transpired significantly more water than the low stomatal frequency plants at high soil moisture levels. Under low soil moisture levels, the water use rate decreased greatly for the high stomatal frequency plants. Plants with low stomatal frequency were able to maintain greater sap flow rates than those with high stomatal frequency. Higher leaf temperatures associated with the low stomatal frequency plants were likely due to lower transpiration rates which reduced evaporative cooling especially under well-watered conditions.
