Executive Summary A business projects its financial performance through its financial statements. An audited financial statement is considered to be genuine and dependable by the stakeholders of the business. Therefore, statutory auditors should be self-regulating so that they can perform their professional role without being influenced by the management. The current regulatory framework for statutory auditors defines independence requirement for a statutory auditor in a professional engagement, points out circumstances that may create threats to independence and also proposes some measures to safeguard the same. However, in recent corporate accounting scandals, company’s failure led to devastating cost to the stakeholders, and audit failure was identified to be one of the causes behind them. Following investigations also sensed possible impairment of statutory auditors’ independence in those scams. In this backdrop, based on the existing literature on this subject, this article identifies variables influencing positively or negatively statutory auditors’ independence in their professional engagement. Opinions of statutory auditors and select other groups of respondents were collected. Most of the respondent groups believe that statutory auditors fail to detect irregularities in financial books due to their lack of independence and professional scepticism as was observed in this study. Several legal case decisions also support this finding. A long association between a statutory auditor and a client is one of the major reasons behind statutory auditors’ lack of independence. Opinions of respondents supported by applicable legal case decisions also proved that lax disciplinary measures and inadequate inspection framework caused audit failures in many recent cases. This study also analyses a significant difference of opinion among respondent groups and identifies the groups having a similar line of thought for each variable. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) test were conducted, respectively, for these purposes. The result shows that significant differences exist among the respondent groups for most of the variables. Moreover, corporate executives have shown a significant difference of opinion from professional accountants, especially on the issue of statutory auditors’ negligence. While corporate executives believe statutory auditors are negligent in their duty, professional accountants oppose their views. Applicable legal case decisions also support such findings. Investors have shown similar views in line with academicians and students.

Robusta coffee plant propagation is recommended to be performed by vegetative methods, one of which is cuttings. Among plant organs that can be used for cuttings is the stem. The research objective was to determine which stem segment from cuttings was able to provide the best root and leaf growth. The layout study used a completely randomized block design (RBD) with an experimental treatment consisting of five stem segments, namely (1) the first stem segment from the upper shoot (A); (2) the second stem segment from the upper shoot (B); (3) the third stem segment from the upper shoot (C); (4) the fourth stem segment from the upper shoot (D); and (5) the fifth stem segment from the upper shoot (E); each treatment had five replications. Data analysis was performed statistically with analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's HSD (honestly significant difference) test with a significance level of P < 0.05. Robusta coffee cuttings stems from the second stem segment from the upper shoot were able to provide the optimal root growth (root length) and shoot growth (leaf sprout height and leaf sprout growth rate). Leaf sprout number derived from the cuttings was not affected by the stem segment.

This paper presents an economic framework to study strategic interactions along the analyst-auditor-owner disciplinary chain, in which the auditor examines the financial reports prepared by the owner, and the analyst uncovers financial misreporting as well as audit failure. We find that although analyst scrutiny ex post detects misreporting, it ex ante aggravates the owner's misreporting behavior and further impairs financial statement reliability if the legal penalties for the auditor and the owner are small. We also show how the effects of a regulation depend on its target's disciplinarian(s). Specifically, (i) although enhancing the auditor's legal liability always increases audit quality and financial statement reliability, it decreases investment efficiency if and only if the analyst is highly independent; and (ii) increasing the owner's misreporting penalty decreases investment efficiency if and only if either of (but not both) the regulations on the auditor and the analyst is strict.

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to assess the effect of an optical whitening toothpaste on color stability of microhybrid, nanofilled, and microfilled composite resins and resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) cement in comparison of two other toothpastes. Materials and Methods In this experimental study, disc-shaped composite samples were fabricated. The samples were then polished using silicon carbide papers. Twenty-seven samples of each material were fabricated and subjected to colorimetry using a spectrophotometer. Each group of material was then divided into three subgroups for the application of conventional whitening and whitening containing blue covarine toothpastes. One operator brushed the samples with an electric soft toothbrush with circular motion twice a day, each time for 30 seconds. Colorimetry was performed at 0, 1, 7, 30, and 90 days. Statistical Analysis Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), one-way ANOVA, and Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) test were used for statistical analysis. Results The interaction effect of type of restorative material and time on ∆E was not significant at baseline or 1 day (p > 0.05). The effect of type of toothpaste on ∆E was not significant at baseline or 1 day (p = 0.78) but the effect of type of material was significant (p < 0.05). The toothpastes had significantly different effects on ∆E of Z250 at all time points (p < 0.05) except for ∆E0–30 (p = 0.106). The toothpastes had significantly different effects on ∆E of Z350 and Gradia at all time points (p < 0.05). The same was true for RMGI except for ∆E0–7 (p = 0.43) and ∆E0–90 (p = 0.52). The majority of color changes caused by toothpastes were not clinically perceivable (∆E < 3.3), except for ∆E0–90 by the whitening toothpaste (∆E = 9), ∆E0–90 by the conventional toothpaste for Z350 (∆E = 3.9), and ∆E0–1 by the whitening toothpaste for RMGI (∆E = 3.7). Conclusion The color change of all composite samples was not clinically perceivable (<3.3) at all time points, which shows that the tested toothpastes do not cause a significant change in color of composite materials.
