Impact of quasi-isotropic raster layup on the mechanical behaviour of fused filament fabrication parts

The development of fused filament fabrication has extended the range of application of additive manufacturing in various areas of research. However, the mechanical strength of the fused filament fabrication–printed parts were considerably lower than that of parts fabricated by other conventional methods, owing to the observed anisotropic behaviour and formation of voids by weak interlayer diffusion. Intense studies on the effect of design and process parameters of the printed parts on the mechanical properties have been done, whereas studies on the effect of build orientations and raster patterns needs special concern. The main aim of this work is to fabricate parts printed using quasi-isotropic laminate arrangement of rasters, achieved by a raster layup of [45/0/−45/90]s, and to compare their mechanical properties with those of the commonly used 0°/90° (cross) and 45°/−45° (crisscross) raster oriented parts. The quasi-isotropic–oriented samples were observed with improved mechanical behaviour in tensile, compressive, flexural and impact tests compared to the commonly employed raster orientations.

Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is currently one of the most popular additive manufacturing processes due to its simplicity and low running and material costs. Support structures, which are necessary for overhanging surfaces during production, in most cases need to be manually removed and as such, they become waste material. In this paper, experimental approach is utilised in order to assess suitability of recycling support structures into recycled filament for FFF process. Mechanical properties of standardized specimens made from recycled polylactic acid (PLA) filament as well as influence of layer height and infill density on those properties were investigated. Optimal printing parameters for recycled PLA filaments are determined with Design of Experiment methods (DOE).

Abstract In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) has gained prominence in rapid prototyping and production of structural components with complex geometries. Magnesium alloys, whose strength-to-weight ratio is superior compared to steel and aluminum alloys, have shown potential in lightweighting applications. However, commercial beam-based AM technologies have limited success with magnesium alloys due to vaporization and hot cracking. Therefore, as an alternative approach, we propose the use of a near net-shape solid-state additive manufacturing process, Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD), to fabricate magnesium alloys in bulk. In this study, a parametric investigation was performed to quantify the effect of process parameters on AFSD build quality including volumetric defects and surface quality in magnesium alloy AZ31B. In order to understand the effect of the AFSD process on structural integrity in the magnesium alloy AZ31B, in-depth microstructure and mechanical property characterization was conducted on a bulk AFSD build fabricated with a set of acceptable process parameters. Results of the microstructure analysis of the as-deposited AFSD build revealed bulk microstructure similar to wrought magnesium alloy AZ31 plate. Additionally, similar hardness measurements were found in AFSD build compared to control wrought specimens. While tensile test results of the as-deposited AFSD build exhibited a 20 percent drop in yield strength, nearly identical ultimate strength was observed compared to the wrought control. The experimental results of this study illustrate the potential of using the AFSD process to additively manufacture Mg alloys for load bearing structural components with achieving wrought-like microstructure and mechanical properties.

Many concepts for acoustic meta materials rely on additive manufacturing techniques. Depending on the production process and material of choice, different levels of precision and repeatability can be achieved. In addition, different materials have different mechanical properties, many of which are frequency dependent and cannot easily be measured directly. In this contribution the authors have designed different resonator elements, which have been manufactured utilizing Fused Filament Fabrication with ABSplus and PLA, as well as PolyJet Fabrication with VeroWhitePlus. All structures are computed in FEA to obtain the calculated Eigenfrequencies and mode shapes, with the respective literature values for each material. Furthermore, the dynamic behavior of multiple instances of each structure is measured utilizing a 3D-Laser-Scanning Vibrometer under shaker excitation, to obtain the actual Eigenfrequencies and mode shapes. The results are then analyzed in regards to variance between different print instances, and in regards to accordance between measured and calculated results. Based on previous work and this analysis the parameters of the FEA models are updated to improve the result quality.

In metal additive manufacturing without interlayer cooling, the macro-size of the layer itself is difficult to control due to the thermal storage effect. The effect of interlayer cooling was studied by cladding Ni-based coatings on the substrate of ductile iron. The results show that under the same process parameters, compared with non-interlayer cooling deposition, the dilution rate is better, and the thickness increase of interlayer cooling deposition is more uniform, which is conducive to controlling the macro-size of the interlayer cooling deposition. Furthermore, interlayer cooling deposition has fewer impurities and more uniform microstructures. Moreover, the average grain size is refined and the dendrite growth is inhibited, which improves the mechanical properties of the coating. Therefore, the hardness of the interlayer cooling specimens is greater than that of the non-interlayer-cooled specimens.

Additive manufacturing enables the design of components with intricate geometries that can be manufactured with lead times much shorter when compared with conventional manufacturing. The ability to manufacture components out of high-performance metals through additive manufacturing technologies attracts industries that wish to develop more complex parts, but require components to maintain their structural integrity in demanding operating environments. Nickel-based superalloys are of particular interest due to their excellent mechanical, creep, wear, and oxidation properties at both ambient and elevated temperatures. However, relationship between process parameters and the resulting microstructure is still not well understood. The control of the microstructure, in particular the precipitation of secondary phases, is of critical importance to the performance of nickel-based superalloys. This paper reviews the additive manufacturing methods used to process nickel-based superalloys, the influence of the process parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties, the effectiveness of various heat treatment regimens, and the addition of particles in order to further improve mechanical properties.

It’s well accepted that the thermo-mechanical properties of Nitinol (NiTi) are strongly affected by the material processing. Additive manufacturing has been recently considered as an interesting technique to develop Nitinol devices with sophisticated geometries, which are impossible or very difficult to be produced through typical manufacturing procedures. In the present work, the effect of energy input on the phase transformation temperatures, as the most critical thermal parameters of the shape memory material, of Nitinol parts manufactured by selective laser melting is investigated and discussed.

A technique is proposed for obtaining electroconductive, mechanically strong, and elastic composite material based on polypyrrole and hydrophilized polyethylene. The relationship is established between the process parameters and properties of the composite material such as electroconductivity and mechanical strength. Several methods are considered in the view of increasing electroconductivity of the material. Physical and mechanical properties of the composite material are investigated.
