The analysis of expression and CGH arrays plays a central role in the study of complex diseases, especially cancer, including finding markers for early diagnosis and prognosis, choosing an optimal therapy, or increasing our understanding of cancer development and metastasis. Asterias ( http://www.asterias.info ) is an integrated collection of freely-accessible web tools for the analysis of gene expression and aCGH data. Most of the tools use parallel computing (via MPI) and run on a server with 60 CPUs for computation; compared to a desktop or server-based but not parallelized application, parallelization provides speed ups of factors up to 50. Most of our applications allow the user to obtain additional information for user-selected genes (chromosomal location, PubMed ids, Gene Ontology terms, etc.) by using clickable links in tables and/or figures. Our tools include: normalization of expression and aCGH data (DNMAD); converting between different types of gene/clone and protein identifiers (IDconverter/IDClight); filtering and imputation (preP); finding differentially expressed genes related to patient class and survival data (Pomelo II); searching for models of class prediction (Tnasas); using random forests to search for minimal models for class prediction or for large subsets of genes with predictive capacity (GeneSrF); searching for molecular signatures and predictive genes with survival data (SignS); detecting regions of genomic DNA gain or loss (ADaCGH). The capability to send results between different applications, access to additional functional information, and parallelized computation make our suite unique and exploit features only available to web-based applications.

MicroRNAs are a class of small non-coding RNAs regulating gene expression at posttranscriptional level. Their target genes include numerous regulators of cell cycle, cell proliferation as well as apoptosis. Therefore, they are implicated in the initiation and progression of cancer, tissue invasion and metastasis formation as well. MicroRNA profiles supply much information about both the origin and the differentiation state of tumours. MicroRNAs also have a key role during haemopoiesis. An altered expression level of those have often been observed in different types of leukemia. There are successful attempts to apply microRNAs in the diagnosis and prognosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia and acute myeloid leukemia. Measurement of the expression levels may help to predict the success of treatment with different kinds of chemotherapeutic drugs. MicroRNAs are also regarded as promising therapeutic targets, and can contribute to a more personalized therapeutic approach in haemato-oncologic patients. Orv. Hetil., 2012, 153, 2051–2059.

MetLigDB (http://silver.sejong.ac.kr/MetLigDB) is a publicly accessible web-based database through which the interactions between a variety of chelating groups and various central metal ions in the active site of metalloproteins can be explored in detail. Additional information can also be retrieved, including protein and inhibitor names, the amino acid residues coordinated to the central metal ion, and the binding affinity of the inhibitor for the target metalloprotein. Although many metalloproteins have been considered promising targets for drug discovery, it is difficult to discover new inhibitors because of the difficulty in designing a suitable chelating moiety to impair the catalytic activity of the central metal ion. Because both common and specific chelating groups can be identified for varying metal ions and the associated coordination environments, MetLigDB is expected to give users insight into designing new inhibitors of metalloproteins for drug discovery.

In March of 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak forced people to lock themselves inside their homes and begin the process of transitioning from face-to-face activities at work, schools and universities to a 100 % virtual method. Even when Communication Technologies (ICT) and online platforms have seen growth over the past two decades, including various virtual libraries developed by database publishers or web-based training programs that appear to shorten the learning curve (Lee, Hong y Nian, 2002), many people were unprepared for this transition and all of them are now dedicated to entering the new reality. In this order of ideas, the activities that have traditionally required the assistance of the staff have had to adapt with the use of new tools, which meet daily needs. A clear example is the field work collection tasks. In this group, there are different types such as surveys, photographs, reviews or on-site inspections. The current work presents the use of tools for collecting, validating, analysing and presenting data remotely and in real time. All of them based on the ArcGIS Online platform.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a serious hemodynamic condition, characterized by increased pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), leading to right heart failure (HF) and death when not properly treated. The prognosis of PH depends on etiology, hemodynamic and biochemical parameters, as well as on response to specific treatment. Biomarkers appear to be useful noninvasive tools, providing information about the disease severity, treatment response, and prognosis. However, given the complexity of PH, it is impossible for a single biomarker to be adequate for the broad assessment of patients with different types of PH. The search for novel emerging biomarkers is still ongoing, resulting in a few potential biomarkers mirroring numerous pathophysiological courses. In this review, markers related to HF, myocardial remodeling, inflammation, hypoxia and tissue damage, and endothelial and pulmonary smooth muscle cell dysfunction are discussed in terms of diagnosis and prognosis. Extracellular vesicles and other markers with complex backgrounds are also reviewed. In conclusion, although many promising biomarkers have been identified and studied in recent years, there are still insufficient data on the application of multimarker strategies for monitoring and risk stratification in PH patients.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> In this article, we present a method for visualizing multi-dimensional spatio-temporal data in an interactive web-based geovisualization. Our case study focuses on publicly available weather data in Germany. After processing the data with Python and desktop GIS, we integrated the data as web services in a browser-based application. This application displays several weather parameters with different types of visualisations, such as static maps, animated maps and charts. The usability of the web-based geovisualization was evaluated with a free-examination and a goal-directed task, using eye-tracking analysis. The evaluation focused on the question how people use static maps, animated maps and charts, dependent on different tasks. The results suggest that visualization elements such as animated maps, static maps and charts are particularly useful for certain types of tasks, and that more answering time correlates with less accurate answers.</p>

AbstractThe traditional frailty models used in genetic analysis of bivariate survival data assume that individual frailty (and longevity) is influenced by thousands of genes, and that the contribution of each separate gene is small. This assumption, however, does not have a solid biological basis. It may just happen that one or a small number of genes makes a major contribution to determining the human life span. To answer the questions about the nature of the genetic influence on life span using survival data, models are needed that specify the influence of major genes on individual frailty and longevity. The goal of this paper is to test the nature of genetic influences on individual frailty and longevity using survival data on Danish twins. We use a new bivariate survival model with one major gene influencing life span to analyse survival data on MZ (monozygotic) and DZ (dizygotic) twins. The analysis shows that two radically different classes of model provide an equally good fit to the data. However, the asymptotic behaviour of some conditional statistics is different in models from different classes. Because of the limited sample size of bivariate survival data we cannot draw reliable conclusions about the nature of genetic effects on life span. Additional information about tails of bivariate distribution or risk factors may help to solve this problem. Twin Research (2000) 3, 51–57.

This study reports the findings of an anonymous web-based survey to test differences in symptom presentation (depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD]) among women who experienced different types of sexual trauma (forcible, pressured, sex stress). The study used a descriptive cross-sectional design with an online convenience sample of 243 adult females living primarily in the United States. The findings revealed that there was a statistically significant difference among type of sexual trauma groups for depression (p = .013) and PTSD (p = .044) but not for anxiety (p = .183). Post hoc analysis of the overall difference in depression revealed that the multiple rape type group (p = .010) and the forcible sex group (p = .016) had higher levels of depression.

This chapter describes the development and testing of the FOCUS program with patient-caregiver dyads (i.e., pairs) as the unit of care. The chapter reviews studies that examined (1) the efficacy of the FOCUS program when tested in randomized clinical trials, (2) the effectiveness of the program when implemented in Cancer Support Community affiliates in three states, and (3) outcomes when translated to a tailored, web-based program. Results indicate that FOCUS consistently produced positive outcomes for cancer patients and their caregivers in these studies. The program also improved patient and caregiver outcomes when delivered to patients with different types and stages of cancer, to spousal and nonspousal family caregivers, and in various intervention doses (three-, five-, and six-session programs). The chapter concludes with plans for further implementation of FOCUS and existing dissemination activities.
