Introduction: In the current days, stroke has become one of the common reasons for admission in many health care setups and becoming an alarming public health problem in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to assess the incidence and associated factors of stroke among patients admitted to the medical wards in Yirgalem hospital. Methods: An institution-based retrospective cross-sectional study design was carried out from 01 January 2017, to 30 December 2019. Admitted adult patients’ medical charts were used to collect all required information using structured checklists. Data were analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 20 software, and a p value < 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. Result: From a total of 3016 admitted patients, the incidence of stroke was 3.15% (n = 95). Of the 95 stroke cases, 58.9% were males and 69.5% of them were urban dwellers. 62.1% (59/95) of the stroke patients had an ischemic stroke, whereas 37.9% (36/95) had a hemorrhagic stroke. Patients with age ⩾ 65 years, smokers, hypertension, and type-II diabetes had significantly higher ischemic stroke when compared to patients with hemorrhagic stroke (62.7% vs 30.5%, p = 0.008), (49.1% vs 11.1%, p ⩽ 0.0001), and (71.2%vs 13.9%, p < 0.0001), respectively. While patients with hypertension had a significantly higher rate of hemorrhagic stroke when compared to patients with ischemic stroke (88.9% vs 61%, p = 0.003). Conclusion: The majority of stroke patients had cardiovascular problems and hypertension. More than 44% and 34.7% of them had a history of alcoholism and smoking. Therefore, proper management of hypertension, lifestyle modification, early screening and management of strok risks and avoiding risk-full personal behaviors like smoking and alcoholism are important tools to limit or prevent stroke-related morbidity and mortality.

Background: Diabetes and higher HbA1c level have increased the incidence of stroke. Hemoglobin levels both high and low are associated with poor outcomes. Leukocytes play an important role in the initiation of the atherosclerosis process.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with a sample size of 62 people selected by non-random sampling method on a consecutive basis, patients with acute stroke were taken blood to measure blood glucose levels, HbA1c, Hb and Leucocytes when entering the hospital room. Outcomes were assessed using NIHSS and MRS. The calculation of NIHSS and MRS scores was performed on the first day of admission and the fourteenth day. To analyze the correlation of blood sugar levels during HbA1c, Hb and leukocytes in acute stroke, this study used Spearman's correlation test. The p value <0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results: The study subjects of 62 acute stroke patients (acute ischemic stroke 31 people and 31 people hemorrhagic stroke). Acute stroke patients were consisted of 38 men (61.3%) and 24 women (38.7%). Of 31 people with hemorrhagic stroke, there were 16 men (51.6%) and 15 women (48.4%), ischemic stroke patients were consisted of 22 people (71, 0%) and women were 9 people. Spearrman repair test showed no symptoms between blood glucose levels, HbA1c, Hemoglobin and leukocytes with outcomes in acute stroke.Conclusions: There was no significant association between blood glucose levels, HbA1c, hemoglobin and leukocytes with outcomes in acute stroke.

Background: Early detection of intracranial blood is essential for the rational use of anti hemostatic drugs in stroke patients. CT scan is quite expensive as well as it is not easily available especially in the rural areas. Clinical stroke scores were developed to overcome these limitations. Aim of present study is to identify the stroke subtype using Siriraj stroke scoring and thus asses its accuracy by comparing with CT scan reports.Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in a tertiary centre that evaluated 464 patients admitted with a diagnosis of stroke. Siriraj Stroke score was calculated for each patient and a CT scan of brain was also taken. The results of diagnosis made by Siriraj stroke scoring were compiled and compared with the diagnosis obtained by CT Scan.Results: Of the total 464 patients, the incidence of hemorrhagic stroke was 27.8% and ischemic stroke was 72.2%, as per the CT scan reports, while the Siriraj stroke score diagnosed 16.8% patients to have hemorrhagic stroke and 74.6% to have ischemic stroke and no definite diagnosis was made in rest of the patients (8.6%). The sensitivity of the scoring was found to be 59.2% in diagnosing hemorrhagic stroke and 95.5% in ischemic stroke.Conclusions: Our study has shown that siriraj stroke scoring has a high degree of accuracy in detecting both types of strokes, with roughly 80% of both hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes being correctly identified. However there is a low sensitivity in diagnosing hemorrhagic strokes and higher sensitivity in diagnosing ischemic strokes.

Background: Defects in insulin action and hyperglycemia could lead to Dyslipidemia in patients with diabetes.Methods: Cross sectional study carried out in patients presenting with ischemic stroke to medicine emergency unit of the LLRH Hospital from January 2018 to October 2019.Patient of age group 40-80 years The subjects in the present study were 450 patient comprised of 235 cases with ischemic stroke of age group of 40-80 years and 215 health y controls of age group of 40-80 years.Results: The correlation between these two variable as elicited from data obtained from study and, is significant (p<0.0001). The sensitivity of this correlation in the context of ischemic stroke is 75%, while the specificity is 60%. However, an impressive negative predictive value of 91% suggests a beneficial effect of normal or well controlled diabetes and Dyslipidemia. Conversely, a modest positive predictive value of 29% does not appear to help in utilizing this correlation as a measure of future likelihood of ischemic stroke. p value 0.00005 inference-highly significant.Conclusions: Study show statistically significant association (p < 0.001) of increased levels of HbA1c and LDL-C in patients of ischemic stroke.

   ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ALTERED HS-CRP LEVELS AND  COGNITIVE FUNCTION OF ISCHEMIC STROKE PATIENTSABSTRACTIntroduction: The incidence of cognitive impairment in acute ischemic stroke patients is increasing. The mechanism of the inflammatory effect, such as  elevated hs-CRP level, a  non-specific inflammatory marker  sensitive to chronic inflammation due to hypoperfusion as well other vascular risk, is thought to have an effect on cognitive function.Aims: To determine the relationship of cognitive function changes in acute phase of ischemic stroke with hs-CRP level changes on day 3 and day 7 after onset.Methods: This was a cross sectional study of 31 first-timer ischemic stroke patients who met inclusion and exclusion criteria. The level of hs-CRP was checked on the 3rd day and 7th day after onset, while MoCA-Ina was assessed on the 7th day after onset. Cognitive disturbance was considered if MoCA <26. Analyses was done using SPSS 2.0Results: The average onset of day 3 Hs-CRP concentration was 0.66 (0.12-16.67)mg/dl and the onset of day 7 was 5.455 (0.14-17.34)mg/dl. The mean change of hs-CRP level between 3 day and 7 day after onset was -0,16 (-3.32-4.95). There was a significant correlation between elevated hs-CRP levels on day 3 and day 7 after onset with cognitive function of acute ischemic stroke patients.Discussion: There was a significant correlation between elevated hs-CRP levels on day 3 and day 7 after onset with cognitive function of acute ischemic stroke patients.Keyword: Acute ischemic stroke, hs-CRP, MoCA-Ina scoresABSTRAKPendahuluan: Insidens penurunan fungsi kognitif pada pasien stroke iskemik akut semakin meningkat. Hal ini diduga dipengaruhi oleh mekanisme efek inflamasi, meliputi peningkatan kadar high sensitive-C reactive protein (hs-CRP), salah satu penanda inflamasi non-spesifik yang sangat sensitif pada inflamasi kronis, akibat hipoperfusi maupun karena risiko vaskuler lainnya.Tujuan: Mengetahui hubungan perubahan fungsi kognitif pasien stroke iskemik fase akut dengan perubahan kadar hs-CRP hari ke-3 dan hari ke-7 setelah awitan.Metode: Studi potong lintang terhadap penderita stroke iskemik pertama kali yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi dan eksklusi. Dilakukan pemeriksaan kadar hs-CRP hari ke-3 dan hari ke-7 setelah awitan dan MoCA-Ina pada hari ke-7 setelah awitan. Fungsi kognitif dinyatakan terganggu jika MoCA-Ina <26. Analisis data menggunakan program SPSS 22.0.Hasil: Didapatkan rerata kadar Hs-CRP hari ke-3 setelah awitan adalah 0,66 (0,12-16,67)mg/dl dan hari ke-7 setelah awitan adalah 5,455 (0,14-17,34)mg/dl. Dengan rerata perubahan kadar hs-CRP awitan hari ke-3 dan awitan hari ke-7 adalah -0,16 (-3,32-4,95). Didapatkan hubungan yang bermakna antara perubahan kadar hs-CRP hari ke-3 setelah awitan dan hari ke-7 setelah awitan dengan fungsi kognitif pasien stroke iskemik akut.Kesimpulan: Didapatkan hubungan yang bermakna antara peningkatan kadar hs-CRP pada hari ke-7 dan kadar hari ke-3 dengan fungsi kognitif pasien stroke iskemik akut.Kata kunci: hs-CRP, MoCA-Ina, stroke iskemik akut

Stroke is a condition where a part of the brain is suddenly disturbed which is caused by a lack of blood supply, which causes an inhibition of metabolic processes. As a result of a stroke affects the psychological function of the patient, so the patient feels his level of self-esteem decreases or is low. The role and support of families play an important role in the rehabilitation process to provide health services for stroke patients. The aim is to find out the relationship of family support with the level of self esteem (self-esteem) in stroke patients at the Royal Prima Medan Hospital in 2019. The design used a "cross sectional study" approach with a population of 2,690 people. Samples were stroke patients at RSU Royal Prima medan, as many as 25 respondents using accidental sampling techniques and questionnaires as research instruments. The test used is the chi-square test. The results of the study Based on the chi-square test found p value (<0.05) statistically shows that there is a relationship between family support and the level of self esteem (self-esteem) in stroke patients specifically there is a relationship between informational support (p-value = 0.009), assessment support (p-value = 0.003), Instrumental support is obtained (p-value = 0.009), Emotional support (p-value = 0.004) with the level of self esteem (self-esteem) in stroke patients. This research shows that good family support will positively impact the level of self esteem (self-esteem) in stroke patients.

Abstract Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and it is the most important of public health problem worldwide. A critical element in tackling the COVID-19 crisis is personal behavioral change; however, there is a paucity of evidence about peoples’ awareness towards COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, the aim of this was to assess the community’s awareness status towards COVID-19 in Sheka, Southwestern Ethiopia.Methods: Community-based cross-sectional study was conducted 10th to 21th April 2020. Four hundred-nineteen individuals participated during the study. Both univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify significant factors of awareness status, and variables with p-value<0.05 indicated it significantly influences the awareness status of the individuals towards COVID-19.Results: According to the study’s results, nearly half (49.4 %) of the participants had awareness about COVID-19 pandemic. Factors such being female equal (AOR: 0.476, 95%CI: 0.293, 0.772),education being secondary and above(AOR:2.178,95%CI:1.323,3.586),and prevention methods being fully used (AOR,8.127,95%CI: 1.273, 51.871)were significantly influencing the awareness status of the community towards COVID-19 pandemic than their counterparts.Conclusion: The study showed that there is a low awareness status among people towards COVID-19.Hence, programs to improve awareness towards COVID-19 pandemic is essential to prevent and control the pandemic.

Abstract Introduction Compared to other deadly communicable diseases, Psychoactive Substance use is among the leading cause of death. Repeated use linked to addiction, dependence and predisposition for criminal and antisocial behaviors. Even though drug use in Africa relatively is short; however the abuse of drug in Africa is escalating rapidly. Substances use is also one of the most burning and growing public health problems in Ethiopia, as in many developing countries; alcohol is the most frequently used substance. Objective To Assess the Prevalence of alcohol Use and Associated factors among Dilla University undergraduate students in Southern Ethiopia. 2018. Methods An Institution based cross -sectional study was conducted at Dilla University among undergraduate regular students from January-February. Systematic random sampling technique was used to get a total of 803 samples of students from each year and department of the university. The collected data was coded, entered in to EPI-INFO version7.1 and analyzed by using SPSS version 20. Crude and adjusted OR were analyzed using logistic regression and the level of significance of association was determined at P- value <0.05. Result A total of 803 participants were interviewed with a response rate of 91.7%. Among the Participants, alcohol use was found to be 67.6%. (41.8%; n=336). Being 4 th year students (AOR =2.66, 95% CI: 1.64, 4.31), having friends who use substance (AOR=1.53, 95% CI: 1.09, 2.1), being Khat user (AOR= 1.48, 95% CI: 1.05, 2.09) and being Cigarette smoker (AOR=1.76, 95% CI: 1.09, 2.84) were found to be significantly associated with alcohol use. Conclusion Half of the participants found to have alcohol use. Therefore, early prevention, detection and alleviating of alcohol use should be implemented among students in the university.

Introduction: Stroke is an important cause of disability among adults and is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The reported prevalence of stroke in Bangladesh is 0.3%. Stroke patients have comorbidity Comorbidity is an important factor in stroke outcomes and burden. Objectives: This study was carried out with a view to find out the common comorbidities prevalent in stroke patients. Materials and Method: This cross sectional study was carried out in Faridpur Medical College Hospital from November 2018 to April 2019 to see the comorbidities and associated factors among admitted stroke patients. A total of 390 stroke patients were included. Data were collected by detailed history from patients or their relatives followed by thorough physical examination; Results: Among total respondents, majority was male (56.4%) and ischemic stroke was the commonest type of stroke (65.6%) diagnosed. The substantial number of patients (85.6%) had one or more comorbidities. Hypertension was the predominant comorbid condition (74.1%) followed by coronary heart disease ((19.5%), diabetes mellitus (17.4%), obesity (6.2%), hyperlipidemia (6.2%), CKD (4.9%), COPD (3.3%), malignancy (0.8%), hypothyroidism (0.5%),CLD (0.5%) and parkinsonism (0.3%). Comorbidities were present in 88.28% of ischemic stroke, 81.81% of intracerebral haemorrhage and 69.23% of subarachnoid hemorrhage cases. Patients with first stroke event have comorbidities in 83.64% cases where as in 95.45% cases of recurrent stroke patients. The relationship between comorbidity and mortality risk is not clear with approximately 16% death in both with or without comorbidity. Conclusion: The results of the study concluded that the prevalence of comorbidities in stroke patients remains high in our settings and the patients with increasing age and those with recurrent stroke events have statistically significant number of comorbid conditions. Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex condition characterized by elevated androgen levels, menstrual irregularities, and/or small cysts on one or both ovaries. It is a common issue affecting more than 7% of adult women, causing many problems including but not limited to infertility, irregular menses, hirsutism, acne and alopecia. The primary cause of PCOS is still unknown but awareness and lifestyle modification is known to be an efficient therapy route to relieve symptoms of this syndrome. Objective of the study was to assess the knowledge about PCOS in young women in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.Methods: A cross sectional study was performed on 500 women of age group 18-30 years coming to outpatient departments of D. Y. Patil Hospital, Navi Mumbai. Written informed consent was obtained and simple random technique was applied for selection of study participants. Pre-designed, pre-tested, semi-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The data collected was analyzed through percentages and frequencies using Excel. Relevant statistical test was applied was applied and p value was calculated wherever required and considered statistically significant when <0.05.Results: Among 500 participants, only 38% of the women were aware of the term PCOS. 26% of the subjects were aware about the organ system involved in this disease. Most of the people know about this disorder through friends or relatives. 17% of the women knew about the various symptoms associated with PCOS.Conclusions: The alarming results of present study show that very small number of young women understand what this disease is and thus when to consult a physician. This could be why PCOS is an underrepresented and underdiagnosed disease. This widely prevalent disease among young women should be talked about more and more young women must be educated on this to help prevent the sequelae of this syndrome on fertility and insulin resistance.
