Abstract Background Atopic diseases and behavioural difficulties in children have both been on the rise in recent decades. This study seeks to assess associations between atopic diseases and behavioural difficulties, examining the differences considering child age and how behavioural difficulties were reported (via self-report or parent-report). Methods Data on behavioural difficulties, assessed through the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and on atopic diseases, assessed through the participant’s medical history, were available for 2701 study participants aged 3 to 18 years. Associations between atopic diseases and behavioural difficulties were evaluated using linear regression analyses. We split the study sample into two groups. I: 3-to 10-year-olds/parent-reported SDQ (n = 1764), II: 11- to 18-year-olds/parent-reported SDQ (n = 937) and self-reported SDQ (n = 915). All analyses were adjusted for age, gender, and socioeconomic status. Results In younger children, atopic dermatitis was strongly associated with higher total difficulties scores, more emotional problems and conduct problems, and more symptoms of hyperactivity/inattention. Parents reported higher total difficulties scores, more emotional problems, and more peer-relationship problems for adolescents with bronchial asthma and other allergies, whereas the adolescents themselves reported more peer relationship problems. Conclusion In younger children, atopic dermatitis is associated with internalizing and externalizing problems. In adolescents, bronchial asthma and other allergies are associated with a greater level of internalizing problems only. The findings further suggest that parents of adolescents are more likely to perceive associations between atopic diseases and behavioural difficulties than the adolescents themselves.

Objectives Little is known about the consequences of adolescent social media use. The current study estimated the association between the amount of time adolescents spend on social media and the risk of episodic heavy drinking. Methods A school-based self-report cross-sectional study including 851 Norwegian middle and high school students (46.1% boys). Measures: frequency and quantity of social media use. Frequency of drinking four or six (girls and boys, respectively) alcoholic drinks during a single day (episodic heavy drinking). The MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social Status, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale – Brief, the Brief Sensation Seeking Scale, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 items for Adolescents, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire Peer Relationship problems scale, gender, and school grade. Results Greater amount of time spent on social media was associated with greater likelihood of episodic heavy drinking among adolescents ( OR = 1.12, 95% CI (1.05, 1.19), p = 0.001), even after adjusting for school grade, impulsivity, sensation seeking, symptoms of depression, and peer relationship problems. Conclusion The results from the current study indicate that more time spent on social media is related to greater likelihood of episodic heavy drinking among adolescents.

The lawfulness of the application of the method of dermatoglyphics in the study of atopic diseases is ensured by the polygenic inheritance of signs of dermatoglyphics, on the one hand, and the pathogenetic heterogeneity of these diseases, on the other hand, as well as high informative ability of signs of dermatoglyphics as markers of diseases of hereditary and multifactorial nature. The purpose of the study is to detect differences in qualitative signs of digital dermatoglyphics between patients with atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma. Primary indicators of digital dermatoglyphics of sick young men and young women of the Podillia region are taken from the data bank of the research center of the National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya and were used in previous studies when compared with the practically healthy population of this region. Imprints were obtained by the method of “printing ink” by Gladkova T. D. By the method of Cummins H. and Midlo Ch. a dermatological study was performed for 320 young men and young women with allergic rhinitis (n=69), bronchial asthma (n=108) and atopic dermatitis (n=143). The frequency and location of 8 types of finger patterns were subject to analysis. Statistical processing of the obtained results was carried out in the package “Statistica 6.1” using nonparametric methods. The reliability of the difference in values between independent qualitative values was determined by the formula of Weber E. (1961). The specificity of the digital typology of atopic diseases is established, which is based on the differences in the frequency and location of the whorl, central pocket and arches between the young men, except those indicated - a random pattern between young women, patients with atopic dermatitis, bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis. Additionally, when comparing young men, patients with allergic rhinitis with patients with bronchial asthma and atopic dermatitis - ulnar loop; for bronchial asthma with patients with allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis - lateral pocket loop (in young men) and ulnar, lateral pocket and double loops (in young women); when comparing young men, patients with atopic dermatitis with patients with bronchial asthma, and allergic rhinitis - a random pattern.

This study examined socioeconomic disparities in changes in late adolescents’ mental health between fall 2019, spring 2020, and fall 2020. Using data from 1,429 adolescents (Mage = 17.9) from tertiary vocational schools in the Netherlands, linear and latent basis growth curve models were assessed and multigroup analyses conducted. Results showed a small but significant decrease in life satisfaction and small but significant increases in emotional problems, peer relationship problems, conduct problems, and hyperactivity-inattention problems. For emotional problems and peer relationship problems, changes between fall 2019 and spring 2020 were more pronounced than changes between spring 2020 and fall 2020. For the other outcomes, decreases were linear. Mental health trajectories were largely comparable for adolescents from families with varying socioeconomic status.

Background and Objective The aim of this study was an evaluation of the dependence between the severity of atopic dermatitis evaluated with the Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index and the occurrence of other atopic diseases and parameters. Methods The complete dermatological and allergological examinations were performed. The statistical evaluation of the dependence between the occurrence of bronchial asthma, rhinitis and duration of the skin lesions, and the severity of atopic dermatitis was performed. Results and Conclusion Two hundred and eighty-three patients were examined: 89 men and 194 women (average [standard deviation] age, 26.2 ± 9.5 years). The significant relationship was recorded between the severity of atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma, the occurrence of rhinitis, and the duration of the skin lesions.

Abstract Background: The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), is a brief behavioral screening tool, widely used for assessing mental health problems in adolescents. The present study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the self-report SDQ (P-SDQ) in Iranian young adolescents. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 244 young adolescents participated from 4 different geographic regions of Tehran and completed the questionnaire. The reliability of P-SDQ scores was determined by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The face validity was assessed qualitatively. The construct validity of the test scores was evaluated by Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Results: The internal consistency of P-SDQ scores was confirmed for all subscales (alpha values ranged from 0.62 to 0.69) and the whole questionnaire (alpha=0.80), except for the peer relationship problems subscale scores (alpha=0.45). CFA supported a five-factor structure in the first order (relating the items to the subscales), except for the peer relationship problems subscale, and a one-factor structure in the second order (relating the subscales to the whole SDQ), except for the peer relationship problems subscale. In addition, the results of CFA revealed that the peer relationship problems subscale was showed; item-scale relations were significant in all subscales, except for the peer relationship problems subscale. Conclusions: The obtained results supported t desirable reliability and validity for all P-SDQ subscale scores and the overall score, except for the peer relationship problems subscale. It seems that the peer relationship problems subscale of the P-SDQ requires further modifications prior to being considered as appropriate for assessing mental health in Iranian young adolescents.

Aim: A key aim of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study is to document substance use onset, patterns, and sequelae across adolescent development. However, substance use misreporting obscures accurate drug use characterization. Hair toxicology tests provide objective historical substance use data, but are rarely investigated in youth. Here, we compare objective hair toxicology results with self-reported substance use in youth. Methods: A literature-based substance use risk algorithm identified 696 ABCD Study participants for hair sample collections between baseline and 2-year follow-up (spanning ages 9-13) for laboratory analysis. Chi-square and t-tests assessed differences between participants demographics, positive and negative hair tests, risk algorithm scores, and self-reported substance use. Results: Hair testing confirmed that 17% of at-risk 9-13 year-olds had evidence of past 3-month use of one (n=99), two (n=17), three (n=3), or four (n=2) drug classes. After considering prescribed medication use, 11% had a positive test incongruent with self- or parent-report. No participant with a positive result self-reported substance use consistent with their toxicology results. Participants with positive tests under-reported use (p<.001), reported less sipping of alcohol (p<.001), and scored higher on the risk algorithm (p<.001) than those with negative hair toxicology. Conclusions: An alarming 11% of tested samples in at-risk 9-13 year-olds were positive for at least one unreported substance, suggesting underreporting in this population when participating in a national healthy development study. The degree of underreporting cannot yet be calculated, as at-risk samples were prioritized for assays. Expanded toxicology testing is key to characterize substance use in youth.

Abstract. Neurocognitive deficits in patients with mental disorders are partially due to secondary influences. “Stereotype threat” denotes the phenomenon that performance is compromised when a participant is confronted with a devaluing stereotype. The present study examined the impact of stereotype threat on neuropsychological performance in schizophrenia. Seventy-seven participants with a self-reported diagnosis of schizophrenia were randomly assigned to either an experimental condition involving stereotype threat activation or a control condition in an online study. Participants completed memory and attention tests as well as questionnaires on motivation, self-efficacy expectations, cognitive complaints, and self-stigmatization. Contrary to our prediction, the two groups showed no significant differences regarding neuropsychological performance and self-report measures. Limitations, such as a possibly too weak threat cue, are discussed and recommendations for future studies are outlined.

Abstract. The Pediatric Symptom Checklist-Youth self-report (PSC-Y) is a 35-item measure of adolescent psychosocial functioning that uses the same items as the original parent report version of the PSC. Since a briefer (17-item) version of the parent PSC has been validated, this paper explored whether a subset of items could be used to create a brief form of the PSC-Y. Data were collected on more than 19,000 youth who completed the PSC-Y online as a self-screen offered by Mental Health America. Exploratory factor analyses (EFAs) were first conducted to identify and evaluate candidate solutions and their factor structures. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) were then conducted to determine how well the data fit the candidate models. Tests of measurement invariance across gender were conducted on the selected solution. The EFAs and CFAs suggested that a three-factor short form with 17 items is a viable and most parsimonious solution and met criteria for scalar invariance across gender. Since the 17 items used on the parent PSC short form were close to the best fit found for any subsets of items on the PSC-Y, the same items used on the parent PSC-17 are recommended for the PSC-Y short form.
