While there are many consistent results regarding the altruism – empathy relationship, starting with the empathy-altruism hypothesis (Batson, 2008) and its confirmations or criticism, there is one specific aspect of empathy that has not often been associated with generosity: active listening. Our research hypothesizes that sharing one’s attention in an empathic way (active-empathic listening) might be a skill linked to a person’s generosity. A linear regression established that self-reported altruism (SRA) could statistically significantly predict someone’s active-empathic listening skill (AELS), F(1, 96) = 28,965, p = .0001 and that SRA accounted for 22,4% of the explained variability in AELS. The results confirmed the initial claim and may have an impact in counseling practice, in career decision-making or in other studies on prosocial behavior.

Good ability in listening means having competence to comprehend information during listening activities. However, Listening skill is still considered as one of the most difficult skills for English language learners although they have been learning English for few years. Hence, this study was designed to gather information about the students’ challenges in listening activities, their perspectives on listening subject, and positive factors on the students’ success in listening. Then, a set of listening test and questionnaire were distributed. Both quantitative and qualitative data were studied to identify the underlying matters in students’ listening skills, addressing challenges, main listening hindrance factors and learning experiences. The findings of this study revealed that the students faced problems in listening because they still could not complete the basic listening skills in the test. Furthermore, Most of them considered that the listening classes are challenging for them due to some problems and difficulties during the teaching and learning activities. Besides that, there were 5 factors influenced the students’ listening skill; lack of practice, limited vocabulary mastery, native speakers’ accent, pronunciation, and uninteresting learning materials. Moreover, their knowledge about English structure and good facilities in listening classes supported them to be able to figure out some challenges in listening activities. In addition, the students realized the important of the listening activities, but assistances from the teachers and some other students were still needed during the teaching and learning activities. In conclusion, having good listening skill still appeared as a challenge for the first year students at English Department of Academic Year 2015/2016.

Listening ability determines the success of counseling sessions. Counselors must be able to listen to the various problems presented by their participants wholeheartedly. This research aims to illustrate the ability of emphatic listening among counseling students in Indonesia. This descriptive quantitative study involved 318 participants (88.7% women) aged 18-23 years (M= 19.24, SD=1.108) voluntarily selected through convenience sampling. The emphatic listening skills were measured using The Active-Emphatic Listening Scale by Bodie (2011) using Google Form. Based on statistical analysis, it was found that empathic listening to counseling students was classified as high. The study also argues that there are differences in empathy learning skills based on the environment in which they live. At the same time, differences in sex, age, and study year did not determine differences in listening empathetically. This study confirmed that the environment in which a person grows up has implications for empathy.

One language skill that is widely used in everyday life is speaking skills. Storytelling learning activities become one of the aspects of learning activities contained in speaking skills. Storytelling activities are used as the first step used by teachers as a basis for training students' speaking skills. However, in learning to tell stories often times students find it difficult when telling stories because the teacher does not use the right or appropriate learning media to tell, the teacher only teaches one direction, namely by conveying the material then the students only listen so that studentsare less understanding and less interested in the learning. Therefore, the average results of students' ability in storytelling are still relatively low. One of the right learning media used by teachers in storytelling learning is the pop up book. The media pop up book is developed as a two- or three-dimensional illustration so that it can support and facilitate students in learning. The choice of media pop up book in learning tells the story because of the many advantages of pop up book. Keywords: pop up book, story telling, learning media

This study designed learning activities supported by a mobile learning system for students to develop listening and speaking skills in English as a foreign language (EFL). How students perceive learning activities and a mobile learning system were examined in this study. Additionally, how different practices relate to students’ language proficiency was also explored. It was found that students had positive perceptions and intentions toward learning activities; thus, students were motivated to practice English skills more when using a mobile learning system. The results demonstrated how students’ speaking and listening skills practices using mobile devices had different correlations depending on their proficiency levels. For example, listening diversity, defined as the number of other classmates a student listened to, was found to have an inverse correlation with speaking and listening proficiency. This finding does not support previous research and indicates that students who carefully selected their listening partners performed better than those who did not. It was further found that the better students performed in English learning, the fewer partners they would choose. EFL instructors can use the insights of this study to design more effective language learning activities for students using mobile devices.
