Iron overload, a high risk factor for many diseases, is seen in almost all human chronic and common diseases. Iron chelating agents are often used for treatment but, at present, most of these have a narrow scope of application, obvious side effects, and other disadvantages. Recent studies have shown that flavonoids can affect iron status, reduce iron deposition, and inhibit the lipid peroxidation process caused by iron overload. Therefore, flavonoids with iron chelating and antioxidant activities may become potential complementary therapies. In this study, we not only reviewed the research progress of iron overload and the regulation mechanism of flavonoids, but also studied the structural basis and potential mechanism of their function. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of flavonoids as plant iron chelating agents are discussed to provide a foundation for the prevention and treatment of iron homeostasis disorders using flavonoids.

Abstract: The continuous increase in the incidence rate of various fatal malignant tumors in the recent years warrants an imperative search for medications or drugs with obvious anti-tumor effects and reliable curative effects. Previous studies have found that Curcuma zedoaria and its active ingredients, such as turmeric oil, curcumol, and ?-elemene, have obvious anti-tumor effects, and they do not have the adverse reactions and side effects seen in the anti-tumor drugs of Western medicine. Based on the review and inductive analysis of related literature, we summarize in the present article the results of some researchers who investigated the anti-tumor effects of Curcuma zedoaria and its active ingredients through the immune regulation mechanism.

circular RNA (circRNA) is a closed ring structure formed by cyclic covalent bonds connecting the 5’-end and 3’-end of pre-mRNA. circRNA is widely distributed in eukaryotic cells. Recent studies have shown that circRNA is involved in the pathogenesis and development of multiple types of diseases, including tumors. circRNA is specifically expressed in tissues. And the stability of circRNA is higher than that of linear RNA, which can play biological roles through sponge adsorption of miRNA, interaction with RNA binding protein, regulation of gene transcription, the mRNA and protein translation brake, and translation of protein and peptides. These characteristics render circRNAs as biomarkers and therapeutic targets of tumors. Gastrointestinal tumors are common malignancies worldwide, which seriously threaten human health. In this review, we summarize the generation and biological characteristics of circRNA, molecular regulation mechanism and related effects of circRNA in gastrointestinal tumors.

As a fat-soluble vitamin, Vitamin D is a necessary hormone to maintain normal physiological activities of the body. In recent years, vitamin D has been considered as a new neuroendocrine-immunomodulatory hormone, and researchers have paid more attention to the study of immune regulatory mechanism. It is not only related to calcium and phosphorus metabolism, bone metabolism and other important metabolic mechanisms of the body, but also closely related to the immune regulation mechanism of the body. Vitamin D deficiency caused by many factors can play a certain role in the development of autoimmune diseases. In this paper, the related mechanisms of vitamin D affecting autoimmune diseases were reviewed, with a view to expound the close correlation between vitamin D and autoimmune diseases, so as to find new diagnosis and treatment approaches for clinical autoimmune diseases and improve the quality of life of patients with autoimmune diseases.

Abstract The chemical modification of RNA is a newly discovered epigenetic regulation mechanism in cells and plays a crucial role in a variety of biological processes. N6-methyladenine (m6A) mRNA modification is the most abundant form of posttranscriptional RNA modification in eukaryotes. Through the development of m6A RNA sequencing, the relevant molecular mechanism of m6A modification has gradually been revealed. It has been found that the effect of m6A modification on RNA metabolism involves processing, nuclear export, translation and even decay. As the most common malignant tumour of the central nervous system, gliomas (especially glioblastoma) have a very poor prognosis, and treatment efficacy is not ideal even with the application of high-intensity treatment measures of surgery combined with chemoradiotherapy. Exploring the origin and development mechanisms of tumour cells from the perspective of tumour biogenesis has always been a hotspot in the field of glioma research. Emerging evidence suggests that m6A modification can play a key role in gliomas through a variety of mechanisms, providing more possibilities for early diagnosis and targeted therapy of gliomas. The aim of the present review is to focus on the research progress regarding the association between m6A modification and gliomas. And to provide a theoretical basis according to the currently available literature for further exploring this association. This review may provide new insights for the molecular mechanism, early diagnosis, histologic grading, targeted therapy and prognostic evaluation of gliomas.

A major difference between glucose metabolism in cancer cells and normal cells is that glucose in cancer cells is preferably converted to lactate in aerobic conditions rather than oxidized in mitochondria. This process is called aerobic glycolysis, known as the ‘Warburg effect’. In this review, we focus on the energy-metabolism characteristics between tumor and normal cells, analyzing the regulation mechanism of energy metabolism based on glycolysis, and summarizing two targets on the upstream proteins of glycolysis, including glucose transporter (GLUT) and hexokinase. In addition, we proposed the risks and limitations of GLUT1-based drug research and summarized the current research progress of representative drugs, including natural and synthetic GLUT1 inhibitors. This will provide guidance for designing and synthesizing small molecule drugs targeting GLUT1 in glycolysis.

Based on literature reviews and analysis of research reports on Pinellia ternata found locally and abroad in recent years, this article summarizes and arranges them. The research on Pinellia ternata mainly focuses on its cultivation, tissue culture, and so on. There are only a few research on its active components and its regulation mechanism. The wild resources of Pinellia ternata are gradually decreasing, hence it is urgent to take effective measures to protect these wild resources as well as to establish germplasm resources bank and nursery. In order to meet the needs of the domestic market, it is necessary to investigate the distribution of wild Pinellia ternata resources, explore the best growing environment and conditions, artificially cultivate Pinellia ternata, as well as implement resource industrialization, sustainable development, and utilization.
