A comprehensive examination and health improvement of 40 patients has been performed using therapeutic physical factors of the sanatorium «Belokurikha», JSC «Belokurikha Resort». High incidence of overweight, hereditary burden of cardiovascular diseases, hyperglycemia, low physical activity, dyslipidemia and atherogenic cholesterol fraction has been revealed. At the same time, 60 % of the examined patients had combination of 3–4 risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, most often obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia. It is established that appointment of pathogenetically based treatment complex, including physical therapy, manual massage, general mineral baths, peloidotherapy, Nordic walking, therapy with elastic pseudo-boiling layer has signifi cant anti-infl ammatory and hypolipidemic eff ects, helps to reduce the severity of endogenous intoxication, and to increase adaptive potential.

Understanding the aging mechanism of polypropylene (PP) is fundamental for the fabrication and application of PP-based materials. In this paper, we present our study in which we first used reactive molecular dynamics (RMD) simulations to explore the thermo-oxidative aging of PP in the presence of acetic acid or acetone. We studied the effects of temperature and oxygen on the aging process and discussed the formation pathways of typical small molecule products (H2, CO, CO2, CH4, C2H4, and C2H6). The effect of two infection agents, acetic acid and acetone, on the aging reaction was analyzed emphatically. The simulation results showed that acetone has a weak impact on accelerating the aging process, while acetic acid has a significant effect, consistent with previous experimental studies. By tracking the simulation trajectories, both acetic acid and acetone produced small active free radicals to further react with other fragment products, thus accelerating the aging process. The first reaction step of acetic acid is often the shedding of the H atom on the hydroxyl group, while the reaction of acetone is often the shedding of the H atom or the methyl. The latter requires higher energy at lower temperatures. This is why the acceleration effect of acetone for the thermo-oxidative aging of PP was not so significant compared to acetic acid in the experimental temperature (383.15 K).

The use of a wheelchair for normal routines or rehabilitation has various physiological and psychological implications. The use of contact assistive robots in developing countries is limited mainly due to their expensive nature. The benefits of exoskeleton use include health improvement, increased self-dependency, and self-sustenance. The chapter offers a solution through the design of a cheap contact assistive robot for the disabled. The design procedure includes the integration of acquired knowledge on gait training and existing exoskeletons acquired from intense research, visits to rehabilitation centers, and use of computer-aided software for design and simulations. A fully functioning scaled prototype was made that demonstrated the operating principle of the actual design. The design provides a successful baseline for further development of exoskeletons suitable and cheaper for developing countries with an initial estimated total material cost of USD$9000.

Aging processes are time-dependent, deteriorative functional changes. These functional changes lead to a progressive loss of the organism’s ability to withstand both internal and environmental stresses, causing the failure of cellular homeostasis. Among the modern hypotheses, the ‘Oxidative Stress Hypothesis’ offers the best mechanistic elucidation of aging phenomena. Based on the ‘Free Radical Theory of Aging’, this hypothesis has gained popularity among researchers in the field of gerontology as well as other biomedical fields. Its primary premise proposes that aging and its related disease processes are the net result of free radical-induced damage, asserting further that an organism’s inability to produce counterbalancing antioxidative defences, i.e. defences that offset disturbances in the redox state, underlies its cause.

Considering the population aging and the failure of biologistic and hospital-based treatment model, health promotion programs based on scientific evidence are necessary. A comprehensive review of literature was performed, aiming to identify and analyze health promotion and education experiments focused on the aging process. Papers published in eight databases, together with the database of the Pan-American Health Organization, were selected based on review of titles and abstracts, followed by a full text review conducted by two independent reviewers. A total of 22 studies were included, the majority of which adopted a quantitative approach, with a sample larger than 100 elderly or pre-retirement individuals. The majority of studies reported positive results in terms of health promotion and education. One study obtained minimum improvement and one reported that no statistically significant improvement had occurred. The positive effects most indicated by authors were: general or self-perceived improvement in physical health, improvement in psychosocial aspects and in relation to the aging process, improvement in adherence to preventative actions and in healthy conduct and lifestyle, increase in level of physical activity, improvement in quality of life and/or physical well-being, and improvement in activities of daily living or reduction of the risk of developing disabilities.

The review reveals modern concepts of morphology and biochemistry of the intercellular substance of connective tissue of the skin dermis, as well as the characteristic of its cellular composition (fibroblasts, mast cells, histiocytes). The main physical factors influencing the aging process have been studied. It has been shown that age-related skin changes are associated with the decrease in the number of fibroblasts and the amount of collagen, changes in its structure and the relation between its different types of collagens.

Biomolecular aging processes are generally accompanied by phenotypic, structural, and functional changes associated with rhytids, volume loss, skin sagging, and dermal atrophy. Due to these processes, tissue restructuring and volumizing help in the aging process bringing improvements to these tissues. In the current market, there are autologous biomodulators that bring restructuring and volumizing in a safe and healthy way. The objective of this study was to show facial biomodulation with the use of PRGF-Gel and its characteristics. PRGF-Gel was used in a female patent in the malar, mandibular, labial, nasogenian and mentual grooves. Great results were obtained in terms of durability and in addition to volumizing, the biomaterial presented collagen stimulation and hydration.

This paper is a review of cognitive aging research centred on the Scaffolding Theory of Aging and Cognition (STAC), a theory which brings together much of the previous research into cognitive aging over the past century and suggests directions for future work. From Santiago Ramon y Cajal, with his microscope and talented drawings, to today’s researchers with psychological and neurobiological methods and technology, particularly neuroimaging techniques, such as fMRI, sMRI, PET, etc., enormous progress has been made, through cognitive reserve, dedifferentiation, compensation, hemispherical asymmetry, inhibition and neurotransmission, to the Scaffolding theory of aging and cognition and beyond. Prior to 1990, research was almost entirely behavioural, but the advent of neuroimaging has boosted research and given rise to a new domain known as cognitive neuroscience, combining behavioural and neurobiological approaches to investigate structural and functional changes in the aging brain. Having reviewed the existing literature on cognitive aging research, the author concludes that although the scaffolding theory brings together a significant body of work and ideas, it is not yet the single, unifying theory for researchers. However, it does represent a giant step toward that theory.
