Studies related to the comparison of ectoparasites that infect snakehead from different habitats and their relationship to biometric conditions have not been widely studied. Thus, present study aimed to investigate the prevalence, intensity, dominance, and predilection of ectoparasites on snakehead collected from ditches, paddy fields, and swamps and correlate them with biometric conditions. In total of 90 snakehead fish were collected from ditches, paddy fields, and swamps. The observation of ectoparasites was performed on the gills, fins, and skin. The parameters measured in this study were ectoparasite profiles and biometric condition of fish. Specifically, the parameters of the ectoparasite profile included prevalence, intensity, dominance, and predilection. Meanwhile, the parameters of the biometric conditions were the length-weight relationship, the distribution of length and weight classes, and condition factors. Five species of ectoparasites that have been identified as Tetrahymena sp., Epistylis sp., Trichodina sp., Dactylogyrus sp., and Gyrodactylus sp. Tetrahymena sp. infection in snakehead was reported for the first time. The ditch habitat had the highest prevalence and intensity, which were 76.7% and 15.4 ectoparasites/fish, respectively. Tetrahymena sp. and Epistylis sp. were detected in sneakhead from all habitats, Trichodina sp. was detected at ditch and paddy field habitats, whereas, Gyrodactylus sp. and Dactylogyrus sp. were only found in swamp habitats. The gill was the predilection organ that most vulnerable to ectoparasite infection. Infected Snakehead tend to have lower average weight and length than healthy snakehead. Snakehead with a weight range of 115.2-145.2 g and a length range of 258.5-268.5 mm tend to be more vulnerable to ectoparasite infection compared to other sizes. Keywords:Tetrahymena sp.PrevalenceIntensityPredilectionLength-weight relationship

The present investigation was carried out for establishing the length weight relationship and to enumerate the relative condition factor and the sex ratio of Neolissochilus hexagonolepis from Tamor River, Nepal. Altogether 198 fishes were investigated from December 2014 till the end of November 2016. The sex ratio of the fish was found to be in the ratio of 1:1.2 with female dominating the catch for most parts of the year. Analysis of t-test showed a highly significant relationship (p˂0.05) between length and weight for male, female and sexes pooled. The fish was found to show isometric growth pattern with exponential value (b) equal to 2.962 for sexes pooled. The mean value of Fulton's condition factor (K) for sexes pooled was found to be 1.29 ± 0.49 giving the indication that the general well being of the fish was good. Sudden increase in the value of relative condition factor (Kn) in the size group 30-33 cm in male and 42-45 cm in female indicated their length range during which they showed the sign of maturation for the first time. Steep fall in the value of 'Kn' in size groups 33-36 cm onwards in male and 45-48 cm in female indicated their length range at spent phase.

Bonylip barb (Osteochilus vittatus Valenciennes, 1842) is an indigenous fish which is the main target of fishermen in lake Rawa Pening. This study aims to determine the biological parameters including length-weight relationship, con-dition factor, and sex ratio of bonylip barb in lake Rawa Pening, Semarang Regency. Fish sampling was conducted biweekly from October 2019 to March 2020, caught using bamboo blinds operated by local fishermen. Data collected consisted of total length, individual weight, and sex. Data on the length-weight relationship and condition factors were analyzed descriptively, while the sex ratio was analyzed with the chi-square test (χ2). The results showed that female bonylip barb was obtained as many as 392 individuals with a length-range between 10.0-26.0 cm and a weight range between 14.5-264.1 g. The male counted 255 individuals with a length range of 10.2-22.4 cm and a weight range of 15.0-160.9 g. The growth pattern was allometric negative. The equation of the length-weight relationship of female was W = 0.0186 L 2.9096 (R² = 0.9527), and the male was W = 0.0151 L 2.9689 (R² = 0.9386). The value of the average condition factor of females was 1.05, and the males was 1.02. The condition factor in females was in excellent condition (> 1.05), and males were in good condition (0.95-1.05). The overall sex ratio of male and female was 1:1.54. It means that females population was significantly higher than males.

In the face of climate change, extreme climates are becoming more frequent. There were severe droughts in Taiwan in 2020, 2014–2015, and 2002. In these years, the paddy fields were kept fallow to save water and transfer agricultural water to non-agricultural use. On the other hand, with global warming, the existence of paddy fields may be one of the natural solutions to regional temperature mitigation. This study used remote sensing to quantify the difference in temperature between paddy fields and urban areas. The result of overall surface temperature deductive analysis revealed that the temperature in the whole Taoyuan research area was 1.2 °C higher in 2002 than in 2003 because of fallowing of the paddy field, while in the Hsinchu research area, it was 1.5 °C higher in 2002 than in 2003, due to the same reason described above. In terms of the difference in land use, for the Hsinchu research area, the surface temperature deductive result showed that the average paddy field temperature in 2002 was 22.3 °C (sample area average), which was 7.7 °C lower than that of the building and road point and 4.3 °C lower than that of the bare land point. The average paddy field temperature in 2003 was 19.2 °C (sample area average), which was 10.1 °C lower than that of the building and road point and 8.3 °C lower than that of the bare land point. Then this study evaluated the economic valuation of the paddy field cooling effect using the contingent valuation method. Through the paddy field cooling effect and in the face of worsening extreme global climate, the willingness to pay (WTP) of the respondents in Taiwan for a decrease of 1 °C with regard to the regional microclimate was evaluated. It was found that people in Taiwan are willing to pay an extra 8.89 USD/per kg rice/year for the paddy for a decrease in temperature by 1 °C in the regional microclimate due to the paddy field. Furthermore, this study applied the benefits transfer method to evaluate the value of a decrease of 1 °C in the regional microclimate in Taiwan. The value of a decrease of 1 °C in the regional microclimate in Taiwan is 9,693,144,279 USD/year. In this regard, the economic value of 1 °C must not be underestimated. In conclusion, more caution is needed while making decisions to change the land use of paddy fields to other land uses.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration is closely related to soil quality and climate change. The objectives of this study were to estimate the effects of contemporary land use on SOC concentrations at 0–20 cm depths, and to investigate the dynamics of SOC in paddy-field soil and dry-land soil after their conversion from natural wetlands (20 and 30 years ago). We investigated the dissolved organic carbon (DOC), light fraction organic carbon (LFOC), heavy fraction organic carbon (HFOC), and other soil properties (i.e., moisture content, bulk density, pH, clay, sand, silt, available phosphorous, light fraction nitrogen, and heavy fraction nitrogen) in natural wetlands, constructed wetlands, fishponds, paddy fields, and soybean fields. The results indicated that the content of DOC increased 17% in constructed wetland and decreased 39% in fishponds, and the content of HFOC in constructed wetland and fishponds increased 50% and 8%, respectively, compared with that in natural wetlands at 0–20 cm. After the conversion of a wetland, the content of HFOC increased 72% in the paddy fields and decreased 62% in the dry land, while the content of DOC and LFOC decreased in both types. In the paddy fields, LFOC and HFOC content in the topmost 0.2 m of the soil layer was significantly higher compared to the layer below (from 0.2 to 0.6 m), and there were no significant differences observed in the dry land. The findings suggest that the paddy fields can sequester organic carbon through the accumulation of HFOC. However, the HFOC content decreased 22% after 10 years of cultivation with the decrease of clay content, indicating that paddy fields need to favor clay accumulation for the purpose of enhancing carbon sequestration in the paddy fields.

AbstractDirect sowing of rice in a flooded paddy field is a beneficial cultivation practice for water use and labour efficiency, compared to the transplanted cultivation. However, a drastic reduction in seedling emergence under flooded paddy fields is a serious constraint especially when the seeds fell at deeper soil layers. Suitable rice germplasm for the direct sowing in flooded paddy fields could ensure the success of this cultivation practice. Instead of laborious field-based screening systems, a pot-based screening method was adopted for simplicity and efficient evaluation of seedling emergence of a subset of world rice germplasm (n = 75) at different sowing depths. As a result, two rice genotypes, ‘Vary Futsi’ (landrace from Madagascar, non-glutinous, subspecies Indica) and ‘Dahonggu’ (landrace from China, non-glutinous, subspecies Indica), with consistently better seedling emergence were identified from a wide range of rice germplasm. These genotypes could serve as excellent parents for the breeding program in developing new rice cultivars with the improved seedling emergence in flooded paddy fields. There were no significant differences in the seedling emergence rate in flooded paddy conditions among the groups from various agro-geographical regions.

Snakehead fish (Channa striata) is one of the freshwater fish in tropical regions such as Asia and Africa, and has high nutrition but is difficult to cultivate. In Indonesia, Snakehead fish are found in paddy fields, swamps and ditches, making them susceptible to parasites. Constraints in Snakehead fish cultivation are caused by the nature of the fish as a predatory, lack of the availability of food and environmental conditions that can affect the growth of the fish. The former paddy fields in Seuneubok Cina of Indra Makmur, Aceh Timur, Indonesia, is found many Snakehead fish. This research aims to determine the types of parasites that infect Snakehead fish. The Snakehead fish was taken using electrofishing gear with purposive sampling method, then dissected and identified the endoparasites which contained in the fish intestines. The research results found three genus of parasites: Pallisentis, Procamallanus and Camallanus.
