Thermoanalytical methods have found increasing application in medicine due to the improved sensitivity and usability of the available instrumentation. Studies have identified important findings applied to medicine, including information on the thermal properties of the skin and the effect of insertion into body cavities of implants and prosthetics. These studies have explored the thermal stability of various materials to provide insight into drug penetration in order to design drug delivery systems, which are not only safe but capable of delivering improved and predictable therapeutic outcomes for patients. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has also been applied to the study of disease states such as diabetes, where changes in the collagen structure of the skin which may lead to long-term complications in these patients, can be detected. Although these results may at this stage not have significant clinical implications, they do provide medical researchers with a starting point for future investigations. The application of these techniques has been further extended to examinations of body systems and other disease states. The key for the future will be the ability of these techniques not only to provide information on alterations in these biological systems, but also to determine whether these alterations are clinically relevant.

Abstract This paper is addressed to comparative study of changes in thermal stability of surface-modified hemp-hurds aggregates long-term incorporated in bio-aggregate-based composites with the original ones before their integration into alternative binder matrix. In this study, the effectiveness of alkaline treatment of hemp hurds compared to the raw bio-aggregates as well as in relation to their behaviour when they are long-term incorporated in the MgO-cement environment is investigated. The differences in the thermal behaviour of the samples are explained by the changed structure of hemp hurds constituents due to the pre-treatment and long-term action of the alternative binder components on the bio-aggregates. Alkaline treatment increases thermal stability of hemp hurds compared to raw sample. Also long-term incorporation of hemp hurds in MgO-cement matrix had a similar effect in case of alkaline modified bio-aggregates. The more alkali ions present in the structure of hemp hurdssamples, the more ash is formed during their thermal decomposition studied by thermal gravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Abstract. We used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to infer thermal properties of soil organic matter (SOM) in the static fertilization experiment in Bad Lauchstädt, Germany, which has been established in 1902. Four treatments (null N, change from null to manuring in 1978 NM, change from manuring to null in 1978 MN, and permanent manure and mineral fertilization since 1902 M) were sampled in 2004. Soil organic carbon contents were highest for M (2.4%), lowest for N (1.7%), and similar for MN and NM (2.2%). DSC thermograms were characterized by three peaks at around 354, 430, and 520°C, which were assigned to as thermally labile and stable SOM and combustion residues from lignite, respectively. DSC peak temperatures were relatively constant among treatments, but peak heights normalized to the organic C content of the soil were significantly different for labile and stable SOM. Labile C was higher for M>MN=NM=N, and stable C decreased in the order N=NM>MN=M, showing that agricultural depletion of SOM increases the share of thermally stable C. Lignite-derived C was not affected by management, suggesting a homogeneous deposition across treatments.

Thermal stability of different types of metallic glasses and partially crystalline alloys stored for at least 15 years at ambient conditions was tested in the present work by differential scanning calorimetry in comparison with that of the original alloys tested in the as-cast state in the earlier works. The structure of the naturally aged alloys was also studied by X-ray diffractometry. The structure of a couple of selected alloys was also tested by transmission electron microscopy. Most of the alloys retained their initial structure and showed only a moderate decrease in the crystallization temperature. Only those alloys which showed visible surface oxidation (Cu-Zr-system based) were partly transformed into a crystalline state forming micron-scale Cu particles in air at ambient conditions.

The purpose of this study was to document how children described their experiences of an unanticipated natural disaster in the form of a flood which followed a hurricane, focusing on strategies that helped them cope with the event. Four participants engaged in a qualitative study, which was conducted 6 years after the disaster. A qualitative analysis of the data was conducted. The overarching theme that emerged from the analysis was coping with the experience during the following time frames: (a) during the disaster, (b) immediately after the disaster, and (c) continued long-term effects post-disaster. Findings provide insight into children’s post-disaster experiences and clinical implications for recreational therapy.

Since the discovery of the non–image-forming visual system, tremendous research efforts have been dedicated to understanding its mechanisms and functional roles. Original functions associated with the melanopsin system include the photoentrainment of circadian sleep-wake cycles and the pupillary light reflex. Recent findings, however, suggest a much broader involvement of this system in an array of physiologic responses to light. This newfound insight into the underlying function of the non–image-forming system has revealed the many connections to human pathology and attendant disease states, including seasonal affective disorder, migraine, glaucoma, inherited mitochondrial optic neuropathy, and sleep dysregulation of aging. In this review, the authors discuss in detail the clinical implications of the melanopsin system.

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has been used to estimate the effect of disc disease on the collagen helix-coil transition and morphology for tissue extracted from patients during surgical operation. Forty discs were obtained from patients with degenerative disc disease undergoing surgery for low back pain. The patients were in the age between 20 and 70 years old. The specimens were kept wet during DSC experiment. The data allow the comparison between thermal stability of collagen tissue from healthy patients and from patients suffering from disc disease. In the paper the comparison between thermal helix-coil transition for collagen fibers from patients suffering from disc disease and collagen fibers from healthy organisms has been discussed. The heating rate has an influence on the position on denaturation temperatures of collagen in disc tissues. Higher helix-coil transition temperature of collagen in degenerated disc suggests that additional intermolecular cross linking of collagen fibers occurs. Denaturation temperatures of collagen in degenerated male disc possess smaller values than in female ones. Disc disease induces changes in collagen structure and leads to formation of additional crosslinks between collagen fibers.

Software mashups that combine content from multiple web sites to an integrated experience are a popular trend. However, methods, tools and architectures for creating mashups are still rather undeveloped, and there is little engineering support behind them. In this paper the authors present guidelines that can serve as a helpful starting point for the design of new mashups. Guidelines focus mainly on mashup creation methods. Furthermore, they describe a reference architecture for client-side mashup development. In addition, the authors provide insight into mashup development based on their practical experiences in implementing various sample client-side mashup applications and tools for creating them. The long term goal of the authors’ work is to facilitate the development of compelling, robust and maintainable mashup applications, and more generally ease the transition towards web-based software development.

The write-off of goods, especially in the fresh food supply chain, represents a significant cost to the company. The purpose of the research is to analyse the impact of the COVID19 epidemic in the fruit and vegetable distribution company and to determine the extent to which the epidemic in 2020 affected the company's operations and the amount of goods written off. Knowing the latter is the first step to improving processes and reducing costs in the company. The analysis was performed using a comparative study of data for 2019 and 2020. The total weight of goods sold in 2020 compared to 2019 fell by 28.6%. Similarly, in 2020 the total value of written-off goods decreased by 31.3%. Furthermore, factors influencing the value of writtenoff goods, such as the purchase value of products, the number of products, the number of orders per day and the number of employees (order preparation and weighting) were studied statistically. We found a relationship between the value of written-off goods and the number of employees and the number of products being prepared. The results represent an insight into the problem and serve as a starting point for optimizing the purchase of goods, the correct turning of stocks and work processes of employees in the warehouse, i.e. optimization of logistics processes in the company. Reducing the quantity of written-off goods is a long-term and demanding process, which significantly improves the company's profit.

Drawing upon a collection of oral history interviews, this paper offers an insight into entrepreneurial and residential patterns and behaviour amongst Turkish Muslims in the German city of Bremen. The academic literature has traditionally argued that Turkish migrants in Germany have been pushed into self-employment, low-quality housing and segregated neighbourhoods as a result of discrimination, and poor employment and housing opportunities. Yet the interviews reveal the extent to which Bremen’s Turkish Muslims’ performances and experiences have overwhelmingly been the consequences of personal choices and ambitions. For many of the city’s Turkish Muslim entrepreneurs, self-employment had been a long-term objective, and they have succeeded in establishing and running their businesses in the manner they choose with regards to location and clientele, for example. Similarly, interviewees stressed the way in which they were able to shape their housing experiences by opting which districts of the city to live in and by purchasing property. On the whole, they perceive their entrepreneurial and residential practices as both consequences and mediums of success, integration and a loyalty to the city of Bremen. The findings are contextualised within the wider debate regarding the long-term legacy of Germany’s post-war guest-worker system and its position as a “country of immigration”.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to research the word class adjective in one sequence of the ESP: Business English, more precisely English business magazines online. It is an empirical study on the corpus taken from a variety of business magazines online. The empirical analysis allows a comprehensive insight into the word class adjective in this variety of Business English and makes its contribution to English syntax, semantics and word formation. The syntactic part analyses the adjective position in the sentence. The semantic part of the study identifies the most common adjectives that appear in English business magazines online. Most of the analysis is devoted to the word formation of the adjectives found in the corpus. The corpus is analysed in such a way that it enables its division into compounds, derivatives and conversions. The results obtained in this way will give a comprehensive picture of the word class adjective in this type of Business English and can act as a starting point for further research of the word class adjective.
