The systematic significance of leaf epidermal micromorphology of ten Nepenthes species (Nepenthaceae) from Peninsular Malaysia. Reinwardtia 18(2): 81−96. — The pitcher plants of Malaysia belong to the genus Nepenthes and can be found thriving in swampy areas, along the roadside, on hillslopes and in mountainous terrains depending on species and their ecological preferences. In this study, cuticle micromorphology of ten species of Nepenthes (Nepenthaceae) collected from Peninsular Malaysia was intensively studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to characterise and investigate diagnostic characters of cuticle micromorphology that can be useful in Nepenthes classification. A total of eleven characters from the inner and outer cuticles were enumerated in details and these characters have a value either for infrageneric classification or for diagnostic identification of the species. Characters observed and analysed were related to the epidermal cells, subsidiary cells, stomatal complex i.e type of waxes on both epidermal surfaces, abaxial and adaxial cuticular ornamentation, stomata characteristics, stomata formation, stomata frequency, cuticular ornamentation on stomata, shape of the stomata, stomata size, trichome existence and type of trichomes. Nepenthes ampullaria is clearly distinguished from the other species by markedly different types of tufted and multicellular trichomes of the epidermal cells on both leaf epidermal surfaces. For N. alba, its cuticular feature showed groovy cuticular pattern on the abaxial and adaxial surface, hence, can serve as a diagnostic cuticular pattern for this species. From these findings, the species delimitation based on cuticular features show a clear resolution, however some species might be individually distinct based on the combination of characters examined.

The structure and development of stomata on the vegetative and floral organs of Vigna unguiculata Walp., and the vegetative organs of Phaseolus radiatus L. and P. aconitifolius Jacq. are described. Paracytic, anisocytic, and anomocytic stomata are present on the same surface of different organs of the plants investigated except on the stem and petiole of V. unguiculata, the bract of P. radiatus, and the petiole, stipule, and stipel of P. aconitifolius where the last type is absent. Stomata with only one subsidiary cell are found on the leaf, petiole, sepal, and petal of V. unguiculata. Diacytic stomata occur on the stipel of P. radiatus and the stem, stipule, and stipel of P. aconitifolius. Paracytic stomata are by far the commonest on each organ. The frequency of different types of stomata on different organs in the plants investigated is tabulated. The ontogeny of different kinds of stomata on each organ is mesogenous, but the perigenous type may be found on the petal and pericarp of V. unguiculata and the stipule of P. radiatus. The variation in stomata is due to: (a) a diversity in stomatal types even on the same surface, and (b) an increase in the number of subsidiary cells. The subsidiary cells divide, or additional subsidiary cells are derived from adjacent epidermal cells. The present study also supports the inclusion of the species concerned in the tribe Phaseolae.

The micromorphology of selected elements of <i>Echium vulgare</i> L. flowers was investigated, with special attention to the structure of the nectaries and the stigma of the pistil as well as types of trichomes occurring on the surface of the calyx. The nectary had the shape of an uneven disc located around the lower region of the four-parted ovary of the pistil. The glandular cells formed a tier with a height of 330 μm and a radial width of 144 μm. Nectar was secreted onto the nectary surface through anomocytic stomata located at the level of other epidermal cells. Most of the stomata were open, with a different dimension of the pore. Their largest number was observed at the base of the nectary, and 462 stomata were noted on the whole surface of the nectary. The cuticle on the surface of the guard cells formed fine, circular striae. The subsidiary cells formed striated cuticular ornamentation, with the striae arranged radially in the direction of the stoma, whereas on the surface of other epidermal cells the striae formed an arrangement with different directions. The epidermis on the surface of the stigma formed regularly arranged papillae with a fan-shaped, expanded upper part which had corrugated outer walls, whereas the base of the cell formed a widened small column. The epidermis of the abaxial part of the calyx was covered by numerous non-glandular trichomes of different length which were made up of one or several cells. The glandular trichomes in the epidermis of the calyx grew with smaller density compared to the protective trichomes, and they were composed of a 1-2-celled stalk and a glandular head.

The economic value of volunteering is an increasingly important part of volunteering management. It has become part of public policies. Some requests for proposals (RFP) enable nonprofits to include the value of volunteer time in compulsory co-financing. These RFP include the European Economic Area (EEA) Grants and Norway Grants. This article addresses the relationship in the value of volunteering, also called in-kind volunteering contributions. The research includes two case studies of finances from EEA and Norway Grants in the Czech Republic: the Czech NGO Programme, responsible for allocating grants between 2009 and 2014, and the Active Citizens Fund, responsible for allocating grants between 2014 and 2021. They share elements through the EEA and Norway Grants rules. However, they use different types of specialist replacement wages. The article summarizes the arguments for including in-kind volunteering contributions. It presents the possible values of these contributions in the selected cases, including the relationship between the type of volunteering and the number of hours necessary to achieve these values. The article defines the theoretical basis for calculating the value of in-kind volunteer contributions and illustrates this with real examples of allocations from EEA and Norway Grants.

The ventral epidermal cells of the photosynthetic, surface-living gametophytes of Lycopodium cernuum, collected from moist shaded banks in Peninsular Malaysia, contain an aseptate fungus. In some cells the hyphae are thick walled and form coils encapsulated by a thin layer of host wall material. In others the fungus is thin walled and shows limited differentiation into larger trunk hyphae and arbuscules. The adjacent host cytoplasm, separated from the fungus by a granular interfacial matrix, contains numerous chloroplasts, mitochondria, and microtubules. The hyphae contact the substratum via the ventral walls of the epidermal cells and the rhizoids are free from infection. In the protocorm and root nodules, aseptate hyphae initially colonize mucilage-filled schizogenous intercellular spaces. Subsequent invasion of the host cells is associated with the development of massive overgrowths of host wall material. The fungal associations in L. cernuum share a mixture of attributes otherwise found in different angiosperm mycorrhizae and in mycotrophic relationships in liverworts. Wall ingrowths are present in both the gametophyte and sporophyte cells in the placenta of L. cernuum. The very limited development of the placenta, compared with L. appressum, certain bryophytes and ferns, the diminutive size, and early senescence of the gametophytes of L. cernuum are all linked to the presence of the protocorm. This massive absorptive organ, homologous to a foot, in terms of its position in sporophyte ontogeny, but external to the parent gametophyte, derives its nutrition partly from photosynthesis and partly from its fungal endophyte. Objective: This paper describes the main types of economic evaluation techniques. Method: To examine the strengths and limitations of different types of economic evaluations, we used a hypothetical example to review the reasoning underlying each method and to illustrate when it is appropriate to use each method. Results: The choice of economic evaluation method reflects a decision about what should represent “success” and how success should be valued. Measures of benefit and cost must be considered systematically and simultaneously. Claiming that a new treatment is cost-effective requires making a value judgment based on the personal beliefs of the claimant. Even when cost and effect data are objective, a verdict of cost-effective is subjective. The conclusions of an economic study can change significantly, depending on which patient outcome is used to measure success. Conclusions: Clinicians must be sure that important patient outcomes are not excluded from economic evaluations. Economic evaluation is a process designed to produce an estimate rather than a decision. New treatment can be more costly and still be cost-effective (if the extra benefit is valued more than the extra cost to produce it). However, since economic evaluation does not explicitly consider a decision maker's available budget, a new treatment can be deemed cost-effective but too expensive to approve.

Numerous flowers and a diverse assemblage of leaves are mummified in clay lenses in the base of the Demons Bluff Formation overlying the Eastern View Coal Measures. Fossil localities occur in the Alcoa of Australia open cut near Anglesea, Victoria, Australia. Flowers are tubular, less than 10 mm long, and about 5 mm wide. Four sepals are connate forming a cup-shaped calyx. Four petals are fused in their basal third and alternate with sepals. Flowers are all unisexual and staminate. Stamens are epipetalous and consistently 16 in number, arranged in 8 radial pairs. Pollen is subprolate, tricolporate, and about 32 μm in diameter. The exine is smooth to slightly scabrate. A rudimentary ovary occurs in some flowers. Sepals usually have a somewhat textureless abaxial cuticle with actinocytic stomata. Some sepals, however, have frill-like cuticular thickenings over some abaxial epidermal cells and some subsidiary cells with pronounced papillae overarching guard cells. One of the more common leaf types found associated with the flowers is characterized by the same peculiar cuticular thickenings and overarching papillae on subsidiary cells that occur on sepals. This cuticular similarity indicates that flowers and leaves represent a single taxon. Leaves are highly variable in size and shape but are consistently entire margined, with pinnate, brochidodromous venation. The suite of features characterizing the flowers is unique to the Ebenaceae. Flowers of many extant species of Diospyros (Ebenaceae) closely resemble the fossil flowers. Fossil leaves, too, are typical of leaves of extant Diospyros. Both flowers and leaves are considered conspecific and have been assigned the name Austrodiospyros cryptostoma gen. et sp. nov. The Anglesea fossils represent one of the earliest well-documented occurrences of the Ebenaceae and are the earliest known remains of Ebenaceae from Australia. They support the hypothesis of a Gondwanan origin for the family with late Tertiary diversification in the Malesian region.

Histochemical tests for K+ were carried out on the epidermis of aerial organs from plants which varied in evolutionary development (e.g., clubmosses, ferns, angiosperms) and general morphology (e.g., monocotyledons, succulent dicotyledons, woody dicotyledons). These tests made on epidermal tissue with open or closed stomata suggested that K+ transport is implicated in stomatal movements regardless of the evolutionary level and the stomatal location in the plants investigated. In all species that displayed substantial stomatal opening, K+ was detectable in the guard cells. With small stomatal apertures, K+ was located in guard and subsidiary cells of Commelina communis L. leaves and Glycine max. L. cotyledons. When stomata were closed, K+ was detectable in the subsidiary cells of all the grass species, Kalanchoë pinnata Pers., C. communis, and, occasionally, in the epidermal cells surrounding the stomata of some ferns. A condition was also observed when virtually no K+ was detectable in the guard or subsidiary cells of C. communis leaves or G. max cotyledons. Commonly, when stomata were closed, K+ was not detectable in any cells of the epidermis. Exceptions were the "K+ storage cells," trichomes and epidermal cells of Arachis hypogaea L., and in the more primitive plants from and including the level of the ferns.

SummaryMeasurements of the release of Ca, Mg and inorganic phosphate(Pi) from the casein micelles of bovine milk have been made, as functions of the pH, in the range 4·9–6·7, and at temperatures of 4, 20 and 30 °C. The results are in general agreement with earlier published studies in giving a value of 1·75–1·84 for the micellar Ca:Pi ratio. Mg appeared to behave similarly to Ca, although the amounts of micellar material were much smaller. The results on the acid-solvation of calcium phosphate are considered in relation to published quantitative studies of the pH-induced dissociation of the different types of caseins from the micelle, and of the micellar dissociation caused when micellar calcium phosphate is dissolved at neutral pH. It is evident from this that at present it is not possible to derive a universal relation between the dissociation of minerals and of caseins from the micelles at different temperatures and under different conditions.

Having a system that classifies different types of fruits and identifies the quality of fruits will be of a value in various areas especially in an area of mass production of fruits’ products. This paper presents a novel system that differentiates between four fruits types and identifies the decayed ones from the fresh. The algorithms used are based on the colour and the texture features of the fruits’ images. The algorithms extract the RGB values and the first statistical order and second statistical of the Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) values. To segregate between the fruits’ types, Fine, Medium, Coarse, Cosine, Cubic, and Weighted K-Nearest Neighbors algorithms are applied. The accuracy percentages of each are 96.3%, 93.8%, 25%, 83.8%, 90%, and 95% respectively.  These steps are tested with 46 pictures taken from a mobile phone of seasonal fruits at the time i.e., banana, apple, and strawberry. All types were accurately identifying.  To tell apart the decayed fruits from the fresh, the linear and quadratic Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms differentiated between them based on the colour segmentation and the texture feature algorithms values of each fruit image. The accuracy of the linear SVM is 96% and quadratic SVM 98%.


A detailed investigation has been made of a nuclear disintegration produced by a charged particle, almost certainly a proton, of energy ~20 000 GeV. The disintegration, of type 22 + 76 p , was recorded in a stack of plates exposed at ~90 000 ft. The jet of secondary charged particles, and the associated cascade of electrons and photons, can be followed through the emulsion of twenty-two plates. The observations lead to a value 0⋅25 for the ratio of neutral π -particles to charged shower particles produced in the disintegration. If π 0 -mesons are produced in high-energy nuclear interactions with a frequency half that of the charged π -mesons, and if 10% of the shower particles are assumed to be protons, the present results indicate that 40 % of the charged shower particles are other than π -mesons. As there is no evidence for the existence of nucleon pairs, it is reasonable to identify these other particles with the heavy k -particles. The corresponding ratio of the numbers of charged k - to π-mesons, N K ±/ N π ±, is equal to 0⋅80±0·4. The interaction length of the shower particles from the event, measured without distinction between the different types of mesons which may be among them, is shown to be very nearly equal to the value for nucleons. It follows that the k -mesons, which constitute a large fraction of the shower particles, interact strongly with nuclei.
