The general objective of this study is to analyze the importance of constructing an Aymara historical memory from a critical and bilingual intercultural curriculum theoretical approach for its implementation in primary education in schools in northern Chile. Methodologically, the design and construction of the proposed contents originate from a qualitative perspective in semi-structured interviews and focus group to inhabitants and organizations of the original Aymara Chilean people. This would allow the structuring of an intercultural curricular proposal based on the Aymara criteria and principles of systematization of their historical memory and indigenous knowledge from a critical theoretical perspective. Therefore, it is possible to sustain that this type of curricular model raises the possibility of eradicating the folklorization of Bilingual Intercultural Education in the classrooms of the northern border of Chile and manifesting the eventuality of being a complement to the national curriculum by developing intercultural competencies for all students from the north border of Chile.

BackgroundThere is an emerging debate that general practice in its current format is out-dated and there is a requirement to move to a federated model of provision where groups of Practices come together. The emergence of federations has developed over the past 5 years but the factors that influence how federations develop and the impact of this new model is an under researched area.AimThe study explored the rationale around why a group of independent GP practices opted to pursue an alternative business venture and the benefits that this strategy offered.MethodA single organisational case study of a federation in the North of England was conducted between 2011–2016. Mixed methods data collection included individual and group semi-structured interviews and quantitative surveys.ResultsFederations promote collaborative working, relying on strategic coherence of multiple individual GP practices through a shared vision and common purpose. Findings revealed many complexities in implementing a common strategy across multiple independent businesses. The ability of the federation to gain legitimacy was two dimensional – externally and internally. The venture had mixed successes, but their approach to quality improvement proved innovative and demonstrated outcomes on a population basis. The study identified significant pressures that practices were experiencing and the need to seek alternative ways of working but there was no shared vision or inclination to relinquish individual practice autonomy.ConclusionOrganisational development support is critical to reform General Practice. Whether central funding through the GP Five Year Forward View will achieve the scale of change required is yet to be evidenced.

Pakistan is a Muslim-majority country, and religion plays a great role in the life of society. This study examines how teachers from the religious, national, and international education sectors realize the concept of global citizenship education (GCE) in Pakistan. Based on 24 semi-structured interviews, this study found differences among the teachers’ understandings of the concept of GCE and its characteristics. Teachers from the national and religious curriculum sectors viewed GCE as a threat to Islamic values, whereas those from the international curriculum sector regarded GCE as an opportunity for improving the economic development and image of Pakistan. Moreover, the teachers from the religious sector argued for the cultivation of Islamic identity instead of GCE. However, the teachers from the national curriculum sector noted the economic benefits of GCE and were keen on global citizenship principles that do not conflict with national and Islamic values. The different perceptions held by teachers from the three educational sectors indicate the need for more work on GCE to narrow the conflicting agendas and broaden the understandings within Pakistani society. Creating common ideas within these different sectors of education is significant for developing sustainable peace within the divided society.

School music has a comparatively low take-up rate as a qualification among English secondary school pupils. Existing research on the issue has proffered possible reasons for this phenomenon but has generally been piecemeal and undertheorised. This paper sets out a fresh theoretical perspective capable of providing a basis for systematic empirical research, and discusses the results of two exploratory studies. Drawing on legitimation code theory, a new approach in the sociology of education that focuses on the basis of achievement within educational contexts, the paper analyses National Curriculum, GCSE syllabi and pupils' attitudes towards a range of school subjects, including music. The documentary analysis highlights that earlier stages of the music curriculum emphasise either musical knowledge or musical dispositions of knowers, but music at GCSE level represents an ‘elite code’ where achievement depends upon both possessing specialist knowledge and being the right kind of knower. The study of pupils' attitudes suggests this code shift is recognised by pupils and may play a role in the low uptake of music for GCSE study. This new framework offers a firmer foundation for future empirical research into attitudes towards school subjects and subject choices.

Information on the socioeconomic aspects and the health status of dogs in 2 resource-limited communities in the North West and Gauteng provinces of South Africa was gathered using semi-structured interviews and a standardised questionnaire. The dogs were examined clinically to determine their health status, and their body condition and age were scored. Most of the dogs (93 % in Jericho and 90 % in Zuurbekom) were infected with hookworm, which poses a threat to animal and human health in the 2 study areas. Many dogs were also being given a protein-deficient diet, which together with hookworm parasites would impact considerably on the dog's health. Dogs were mainly kept for security reasons. The need indicated to be most important by the residents of the 2 commnities was a lack of available and affordable veterinary services.

Textbooks are one of the essential types of materials that are extensively used in English as a second language classroom instruction. The current study tries to evaluate the textbook SUNRISE 9 based on six categories. This study intends to cover how those categories are represented in SUNRISE 9. The categories are the layout and design, activities, skills, language type, subject and content and conclusion. The present study aims at answering the questions about SUNRISE 9 from teachers’ and students’ opinions and finding out whether there is a statistically significant difference between the teachers’ and students’ responses with regard to the strengths and weaknesses of the textbook which are used in language classrooms in all basic schools in the Northern Iraq. Two data collection tools were carried out in the current study. The quantitative data were obtained using questionnaire for teachers and students with a total number of 375 9th grade students and 40 9th grade teachers. They were chosen randomly from Sulaimanyah city in the North of Iraq. The qualitative part of the study, semi-structured interviews were held among 13 teachers to gather more neccessary data. The findings reveal that the teacher participants have negative opinions towards most of the sections of the textbook and some others have not stated any opinions but the student participants generally have positive opinions about SUNRISE 9. For this English textbook SUNRISE 9, an empirical evaluative study and an in-depth method evaluation are also suggested to be conducted to find out more important results.

Aim:This article presents findings from an interpretive phenomenological study that illuminates unique characteristics of the different social representations of antenatal primigravida and multigravida women who book to birth their babies in a birth center, hospital, or at home.Methods:Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 women and analyzed by interpretive phenomenological analysis.Findings:Analysis revealed different social representations independent of each other that illustrate how these social groups, determined by women’s collective voices, are uniquely characterized by group views, beliefs, misinterpretations, and preconceptions that establish what influences women in decision-making about choice of birthplace.Conclusion:Women make decisions about what they want for themselves in this birthing experience. These decisions are made long before this impending experience. Recognizing the different social representations of women in pregnancy reveals deeper insight into the complexities of women’s decision-making about birth choices and highlights why some women might opt for certain choices. Knowing that some women may make decisions based on little or misrepresented information confirms midwives are best placed in their interactions with women to provide positive influences, empowering them to make decisions based upon what they want for themselves. This affirms the woman and her midwife should remain partners in the decision-making process.

Based on the content analysis of “non-ethnic” mass media in the federal subjects of Russia in the North Caucasus, the attempt to determine the place of ethnicity in the information field of the region and the influence of these sources on the processes of politicization/depoliticization of ethnicity is made in the paper. It was revealed that the topic “historical memory” is the leading one in ethnically marked publications. The next places in the thematic classi-fier are occupied by “ethnic identity” and “ethnic traditions and values”. Along with this, the dis-course of modernization turned out to be in de-mand, which indicates that the North Caucasus is in a situation of search for an optimal balance between old and new, traditions and innovations. Only one case of the use of the concept of “nation” as a syn-onym for the Russian (“Rossiyan”) nation has been identified, however, references to the nation in the ethnic sense are extremely rare. It is concluded that the “non-ethnic” media of the North Caucasus keep ethnic and confessional issues within public dis-course, but it is not “superfluous”, i. e. the tendency to politicize ethnicity is not typical or explicit.

Abstract: Introduction: The palliative care (PC) approach is a care modality recommended by the World Health Organization. Suffering and the process of dying are present in everyday clinical practice, affecting people with life-threatening diseases. However, the predominant model of teaching in Brazilian medical schools does not include palliative care. Objectives: The aim of the study was to get to know the Brazilian medical schools that include PC in their curriculum, and how it has been taught. Methods: Descriptive and exploratory study, carried out by searching for medical schools with disciplines in PC, through the analysis of the course syllabi available in the curricular matrices on the official websites of higher education institutions from August to December 2018. They were analyzed considering the offered period of the PC content, workload, scenario, and type of discipline (elective or mandatory). Results: 315 schools registered with the Ministry of Education were found, and only 44 of them (14%) offer courses in PC. These schools are distributed throughout 11 Brazilian states, of which 52% are located in the Southeast region, 25% in the Northeast, 18% in the South, 5% in the Midwest, and none in the North region. The predominant modality of the type of discipline in PC was mandatory in 61% of schools. Most Brazilian medical schools are private entities (57%), a similar percentage to the total number of medical schools identified with the teaching of PC. This course takes place in the 3rd and 4th years of the course; in most schools, the workload was 46,9 hours. The predominant scenario is the classroom, while some institutions provide integration between teaching community service and medical practice. The program contents are diverse, including thanatology, geriatrics and finitude, humanization, bioethics, pain, oncology and chronic diseases. Conclusion: PC education in Brazil is insufficient, which represents a barrier to the training of doctors in line with the recommendations of international entities, the National Curriculum Guidelines and legal frameworks within the scope of SUS. Investments by medical entities and government agencies are necessary to increase teaching in PC and the consequent qualification of medical training.

Abstract A tectonic study of the area northwest of Sierra de la Demanda (Spain) revealed Tertiary orogenic phases represented by overlaps and overturnings. Towards the northern border, the Cambrian overrides Carboniferous, Triassic and Jurassic formations; the Carboniferous-Triassic units appear overturned under the Cambrian; and the Jurassic formations are affected locally by a system of dislodged slices of nappes associated with imbricate basement rocks. Two major directions of deformation suggest the presence of two successive orogenic phases. The first phase, older than the Oligocene conglomerates, folded the units above the basement in a NW-SE direction, parallel to the north oriented horst in the basement complex. In the post-Oligocene phase NE-SW imbrication affected the conglomerates as well as the basement and overlying units.

Objetivo: Revisar los aspectos epidemiológicos relevantes de investigaciones nacionales sobre consumo de heroína y cocaína en las dos últimas décadas, haciendo énfasis en la frontera norte de México. Material y Método: Se realizó una consulta automatizada, previo diseño teórico de búsqueda bibliográfica de trabajos sobre el tema. Se encontraron 72 materiales y tras una cuidadosa selección, quedaron 59, recuperando 83% de ellos. Para su análisis se diseñó una matriz de variables cualitativas y cuantitativas y se procesó en Excel para Windows 2000. Resultados: Sin ser un fenómeno reciente, el consumo de heroína esta alcanzando en últimas fechas proporciones considerables y diversas fuentes de información marcan esta tendencia, sobre todo en el norte del país. Asimismo el consumo de cocaína es cada vez mayor y se extiende por todo el territorio nacional en proporciones cada vez mayores según lo muestran diferentes indicadores. Comentarios: El panorama epidemiológico del consumo de heroína y cocaína es alarmante por sus repercusiones en lo individual, familiar y social y representa un reto principalmente para la planificación y funcionamiento de los servicios de salud en México. AbstractObjective: To review the relevant epidemiological aspects of national research regarding consumption of heroin and cocaine over the last two decades, with emphasis on the northern border of Mexico. Materials and Method: An automated consultation was carried out after the theoretical design of a bibliographic search for works related to the subject. 72 papers were found of which 59 were chosen after a careful revision representing 83%. For the analysis a matrix of qualitative and quantitative variables was designed and processed with Excel, Windows 2000. Results: Although the consumption of heroin is not a recent phenomenon, over the last few years it has reached such high proportions, especially in the north of the country, as many different sources of information indicate. Likewise, the consumption of cocaine is ever-growing and spreading throughout the country the same proportions, as show by several indicators. Observations: The consumption prevalence of both heroin and cocaine is alarming because its tremendous impact on the individual, the family and the society and it represents a challenge for the Mexican Health Services, particularly in planning and management.
