AbstractParamedics perform physically demanding tasks during patient transport in daily routine and therefore suffer more often from musculoskeletal ailments, mainly low back pain, than any other profession. We hypothesise, that current transport aids do not offer sufficient support when it comes to obstacles and stairs during patient transport. Therefore we conducted an Ovako Working Posture Analysing System (OWAS) field study to capture postural workloads during patient transport and connected the results to a survey among paramedics about occurring obstacles. The results of the OWAS analysis showed strenuous working conditions during barrier-free transport with classical transport aids, like stretcher and stretcher chair, but enormous postural workloads when barriers occurred. Our survey revealed, that stairs occurred in 38 %, and at least one barrier, like narrow passages, curbs, etc., in 48.1 % of all deployments (n=405), we can quantitatively link postural workloads with occurring obstacles. In conclusion, there is a high demand for ergonomic improvements of current transport aids and a high potential of active assist devices to reduce harmful loads on paramedics.

Background: Non-adherence to home exercise programmes may lead to delayed progress in recovery and diminished clinical outcomes in patients. Aims of Study: To determine the adherence rate and attributing factors to non-adherence to home exercise programmes in patients with low back pain (LBP). Method: A total of 250 patients with LBP receiving treatment in 5 different out-patient physiotherapy clinics in Lagos State South West, Nigeria participated in this survey. They were required to complete a 27- item questionnaire which collected information on characteristics of participants and home exercise programme, adherence with treatment programme and instructions for carrying out the exercises. Gamma correlation and Chi-square were used to detect the correlation and significant difference of selected variables respectively. The level of significance was set at p< 0.05 Result: Ninety-four (37.6%) respondents performed home exercise programme the recommended number of times daily. There was no significant relationship (p> 0.05) of participants’ characteristics, frequency and duration of exercise per session, total number and manner of recommending the home exercise programme and pain rating respectively with adherence to home exercise programme. Eighty-nine (35.6%) respondents complained of tiredness after the day’s work. Chi-square showed significant association (p<0.05) of the prescribed home exercises programme, the actual exercise carried out at home with their perception to home exercise programme Conclusion: Home exercise programmes may interfere with normal life and daily routine in patients with LBP. It is recommended that home exercise programme be patient centred I.e. fit into individual daily routine to overcome identified barriers.

Tailors work in a static position and bend over with a relatively long duration of workPostural muscle load on tailors results in the risk of complaints of low back pain which affects the productivity of tailor. The aim is to know the effect of improving working conditions through a participatory ergonomics approach to reduce low back pain complaints and increase tailor productivity. The method uses of experimental research with treatment by subject design, involving 9 samples selected by simple random sampling. Period 1 sample is working with conventional working conditions. Period 2 samples worked with improving working conditions through a participatory ergonomics approach. Washing out period and adaptation are given between the two periods. Complaints of low back pain were measured by the Oswestry Disability Index, while productivity was based on a comparison between the number of stitches/day and the score for complaints of low back pain per working time. The results showed that improving working conditions through a participatory ergonomics approach had a significant effect (p < 0.05). There was a decreasing in low back pain by 11.87% from an average of 48.67±1.73 to 42.89±1.76 and an increasing in productivity of 42.10% from an average of 0.038±0.004 to 0.054±0.005.

Low back pain has become a central issue of physiological health. Almost all the discussion of musculoskeletal complaints places more emphasis on the need to pay attention to the importance of health in the lower back. One of the causes of workers' complaints on the lower back is a less natural posture when on the move. The impact that is most easily observed as a result of the emergence of low back pain is the emergence of fatigue and decreased work motivation. Observation of the impact of low back pain on workers was examined using the same subject design. The subject are 11 people who work as wood carving artists. In period 1 the subjects worked in conventional working conditions, while in period 2 the subjects were given treatment, namely anticipation of complaints of low back pain, working in ergo-anthropometric working conditions, ie given ergonomic work tables and chairs with additional nutrition intake, active rest and work uniform. The fatigue variable was measured using a 30 items rating scale questionnaire and crafters' motivation was measured by a questionnaire on 4 Likert scales. Data analysis begins with descriptive analysis and normality test data with ShapiroWilk. Data with normal distribution are used t-paired analysis and data with abnormal distribution use Wilcoxon test. In this study it was found that ergo-anthropometric working conditions can reduce fatigue by 27.34% and increase work motivation by 20.39%. It can be concluded that efforts to anticipate complaints of low back pain can reduce fatigue and maintain work motivation of carving craftsmen.

Abstract Background In Germany and other European countries, many occupations still involve manual handling of loads (MHL), an activity that puts the musculoskeletal system at risk of low back pain (LBP). This study aims to describe the current prevalence of MHL in different occupational groups stratified by gender in Germany, the association between MHL and LBP and the adjusted prevalence of LBP in different respond-categories of MHL. Methods Data was collected in telephone interviews conducted as part of the 2018 BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey, which covers work-related topics like working conditions, education, health status and job satisfaction. The analyses were limited to full-time workers (> 35 h/week) aged between 15 and 67. The frequency of MHL was analysed descriptively. BLOSSFELD classification was used to group the participants in occupational categories. The analysis of the association between MHL and the prevalence of LBP over the last 12 months was based on robust log-linear Poisson regression that results in prevalence ratios (PR). The main regression model was adjusted for gender, age, working hours, and working conditions. Adjusted estimates for the prevalence of LBP were calculated based on regression analysis. Results The sample consists of n = 14,331 participants (men: n = 8828, 61.6%; women: n = 5503, 38.4%; median age 49 years). Of these, 52.8% say they were exposed to MHL at work. MHL is most common in agricultural occupations, skilled and unskilled occupations. In the regression model, participants who said they were “often” exposed to MHL reported more frequently LBP than those participants who said they were “never” exposed to MHL. The PR as estimate for the association is 1.41 (95%CI [1.32; 1.49]). Postestimation of the prevalence of LBP began with 47.3% (95%CI [43.8%; 51.1%]) for participants who said they were “never” exposed to MHL and rose to 66.5% (95%CI [62.4%; 71.0%]) for participants who indicated they were “often” exposed to MHL. Conclusions The 2018 BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey emphasizes that MHL is still common in the German workforce and shows a significant association to LBP. Prevention policies for avoiding MHL remain vital.

Abstract: Modern design of dental equipment does not totally prevent the profession from experiencing low back pain (LBP). This study was aimed to determine the prevalence of LBP, to analyze risk factors associated with LBP, and to analyze risk factor for LBP among dentists in North Sulawesi. This was a quantitative and analytical study with a cross sectional design. Samples were determined by using the purposive sampling method, namely 148 dentists who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected by using the Ovako Working Posture Analysis System (OWAS) questionnaire to assess the posture of the dentists during treatment by adding individual and occupational characteristics. Further data were analyzed univariately, bivariately, and multivariately by using the SPSS program. The results showed that the prevalence of dentists who experienced LBP was 41,2%. In addition, work position (p=0.043, correlation coefficient Ф=0.166), and the number of patients in a day (p=0.025, r=0.190) had a significant correlation with NPB. In conclusion, work position is the most influential factor of LBP among dentists in North Sulawesi (OR=2.085, CI=95%). It is expected that all dentists should avoid working positions that could harm their musculoskeletal systems. Keywords: low back pain, dentist  Abstrak: Perubahan desain peralatan kedokteran gigi yang semakin mutakhir tidak menjadikan profesi dokter gigi terbebas dari keluhan nyeri punggung bawah (NPB). Abstract Background Low back pain is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal conditions and the most common cause of disability. Hairdressers are one of the high-risk professionals for work-related musculoskeletal disorders like low back pain. However, studies on the prevalence and associated factors of low back pain among hairdressers are scarce. The objective of the current study is to assess the magnitude and associated factors of work related low back pain among hairdressers working in female beauty salons.Method An institutional-based cross-sectional study was employed from January 05 up to February 28, 2018. The sample (n=344) hairdressers were selected randomly from all-female beauty salons of Mekelle city. A structured questionnaire adapted from a standardized Nordic questionnaire and other similar studies was used. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with low back pain. The Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with a 95% Confidence Interval (CI) was estimated to show the strength of association. A p-value of < 0.05 was used to declare statistical significance.Result A total of 314 hairdressers participated, with a 91.3% response rate. The study found that the self-reported 12 months prevalence of work related low back pain was (47.5%) with 95%CI (41.8- 53.1). Awkward way working posture [AOR: 2.6, 95%CI (1.41- 4.62)], working greater than 4 days in a week [AOR: 7.98, 95%CI (2.54-25.09], hair washing job category [AOR: 4.35, 95%CI (1.87-10.12)], having adjustable washing basin [AOR: 0.30, 95%CI (0.151-0.587)] and job stress [AOR: 2.75, 95%CI (1.61-4.72)] were factors that shows a statically significant association with low back pain. Conclusion This study found that work-related low back pain is a major health problem among hairdressers.Working in awkward postures, more working days per week, hair washing job category and job stress show strong association with work related low back pain, whereas using adjustable height washing basin has a protective effect for low back pain. Responsible bodies need to give attention to prevent low back pain among hairdressers by giving on job training related to comfortable working posture and utilization of ergonomically designed tools.
