Effect of a brief training program for primigravid adolescents on parenting self-efficacy and mother-infant bonding in the southeast of Iran

Abstract Background Annually, about 16 million adolescent girls give birth, accounting for 11% of all births worldwide. Ninety-five percent of these births occur in low- and middle-income countries, and previous studies have addressed the need for parenting interventions in developing countries with limited health care resources to improve parenting behaviors. Objective To explore the effect of a brief training program for primigravid adolescents on parenting self-efficacy and mother-infant bonding. Subjects We enrolled 116 married pregnant adolescents. Methods This quasi-experimental study was conducted during August 22, 2016–February 3, 2017. The intervention group received three sessions of training on neonatal care, while the control group received the routine care. We evaluated parenting self-efficacy using the Perceived Maternal Parenting Self-Efficacy (PMP S-E) questionnaire, the mother-infant bonding using the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (PBQ) and social support by means of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). The participants were followed up for 1 month. Results The mean ages of the intervention and the control groups were 16.37 ± 0.97 and 16.27 ± 1.12 years, respectively. The intervention group obtained higher self-efficacy and bonding scores compared to the control group. The logistic regression model showed that the second (evoking behaviors) and the third (reading behavior or signaling) subscales of the PMP S-E, the route of delivery and women’s educational levels could predict the mother-infant bonding scores. Conclusion Primigravid adolescents can benefit from brief interventions during pregnancy through improving their parenting self-efficacy and mother-infant bonding.

Background: Different strategies have been suggested to increase successful breastfeeding, including establishing child-friendly hospitals, prenatal training courses, and various counseling models in breastfeeding self-efficacy enhancement in women with gestational diabetes. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effect of counseling on breastfeeding self-efficacy in women with gestational diabetes. Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental intervention conducted on 100 pregnant women with gestational diabetes after obtaining informed consent. The intervention group received breastfeeding counseling based on the GATHER approach in the third trimester of pregnancy between 32 and 33 weeks and between 35 and 36 weeks of pregnancy, respectively. The follow-up process was performed in 4 sessions after delivery: 14 to 16 days after delivery and 28 to 30 days after delivery for 60 to 90 minutes. The control group, on the other hand, only received routine care. After counseling, self-efficacy was examined at the end of the study and after the third month. The data were analyzed using statistical independent t-tests and chi-square. Results : The mean score of self-efficacy of breastfeeding at the end of the study was 55.12 in the experimental group, which was higher than that of the control group (46.16) (P =0.0001). The frequency percentage of exclusive breastfeeding was 58% in the experimental group and 22% in the control group (P =0.0001). Conclusion: Considering the effectiveness of breastfeeding counseling on increasing self-efficacy and continuity of breastfeeding in diabetic breastfeeding mothers, it is suggested to use prenatal and continued in postnatal for diabetic mothers.

Humanitarian engineering projects mitigate environmental hazards disproportionately affecting health in low- and middle-income countries. However, widespread literacy deficits can create barriers in training low-literacy adults to construct these projects, indicating a need for literacy-adapted training materials. A randomized control trial in rural Guatemala tested the usability of pictorial action instructions, compared to demonstration-only methods, in training low-literacy adults (N = 60; n = 30 per group) to construct a solar bottle bulb. Fourteen days after the training, participants individually constructed the solar bottle bulb. The intervention group received pictorial action instructions to guide them, and the control group completed construction based on memory. Usability was evaluated by measuring the effectiveness and efficiency of construction, as well as user satisfaction and self-efficacy levels. Effectiveness and self-efficacy were significantly better among those in the intervention group compared to the control group. Considering this, the findings support the use of pictorial action instructions in training low-literacy adults to construct humanitarian engineering projects. This method may allow more individuals in rural regions of low- and middle-income countries to successfully construct their own humanitarian engineering projects in a way that is sustainable and scalable. Further research is needed to test these instructions in different settings, on a larger scale, as well as to test the long-term effects of using pictorial action instructions.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of regular chest percussion on outcome measures for infants with pneumonia.Methods: A two-group pre-post quasi-experimental design was conducted in the Pediatrics Medical Unit at Abu Elrish Children’s Hospital, Cairo University. The experiment involved 100 infants fifty (control group) followed the hospital routine care and other fifty applied regular chest percussion (intervention group). Chest condition was assessed subjectively and objectively throughout five days before and after the regular chest percussion using Pediatrics Respiratory Severity Scales. Physiological measurements of infant’s respiratory rate, heart rate, and temperature and oxygen saturation were assessed. All research ethics were applied.Results: The mean of Pediatric Respiratory Severity Score (PRSS), temperature, respiration, heart rate and oxygen saturation among infants was statistically improved throughout the intervention days than the control group 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th days post the regular chest percussion at a significance level as p < .05.Conclusions: The regular chest percussion had a significant improvement in the respiratory health conditions for infants with bacterial pneumonia. This study recommends regular chest percussion that should be applied in medicine and intensive care units. Further researches must be done to add more evidence -based practices regarding the effect of chest percussion for children with pneumonia.

Background: The negative effects of cesarean section on breastfeeding are a major global concern. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of Oketani breast massage on the maternal need for support during breastfeeding, breastfeeding success, and breastfeeding self-efficacy. Setting: Three hospitals affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran, from April to July 2019. Study Design: The participants in this experimental study were 113 pregnant women who were candidates for cesarean section. The mothers were selected using convenience sampling and randomly assigned. In addition to routine care, the mothers in the intervention group received Oketani breast massages twice. However, the mothers in the control group received routine care. The data were collected using the Infant Breastfeeding Assessment Tool (IBFAT), LATCH Assessment Score, and the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (BSES). The data were analyzed with SPSS 20 software via the independent samples t test, the Mann–Whitney U test, and the chi-square test. Results: The results of the study suggested that the breastfeeding success rate, which was evaluated with IBFAT in both the first two breastfeeding stages and the last pre-discharge breastfeeding, was significantly higher for the mothers in the intervention group (p < .001). In addition, the mother’s need for support, which was evaluated with LATCH in the first two breastfeeding stages (p = .044) and the last pre-discharge breastfeeding (p < .001) in the intervention group, was less. The total number of breastfeeding sessions from birth to discharge was higher in the intervention group (p = .002). Furthermore, the mothers in the intervention group breastfed their infants in a significantly shorter time interval (p = .002). Breastfeeding self-efficacy, according to the BSES, was significantly higher in the mothers of the intervention group (p < .001). Conclusion: Oketani massage can be used as a care intervention by nurses to improve breastfeeding in mothers who undergo cesarean sections.

Abstract Background Evidence indicates the lower intake of fruits and vegetables than the recommended daily amount. Study aimed at determining the effects of peer education intervention on the consumption of fruits and vegetable in housewives. Methods A quasi-experimental was conducted with 130 housewives referring to health care centers in Bandar Abbas, Iran. Sixty-five subjects were recruited in each of the intervention and the control groups. Intervention group were divided into three subgroups each receiving a seven-sessions educational programs (lecturing and group discussion) through peers about the importance of benefits of fruits and vegetables consumption. Participants were followed for two months. Data were collected using a questionnaire in two stages of pre- and post-intervention. Differences in the outcome before and after the intervention were tested using T-test and paired T-test. Results The daily servings of fruits and vegetables in the intervention group increased from 1.73 to 4.20 and in the control group from 1.96 to 2.16; a statistically significant difference was also observed between the groups (P < 0.001). After the intervention benefits and self-efficacy of fruits and vegetables consumption significantly increased and perceived barriers of fruits and vegetables consumption significantly decreased in the intervention group (P < 0.001). Conclusion Peer education improves benefits and self-efficacy, reduces barriers, and increases the daily servings of fruits and vegetables in housewives.

Abstract Background Studies show that childbirth fear is a common problem among Iranian women. Therefore, most Iranian women prefer caesarean section for giving birth. This study investigated the effectiveness of a psychoeducational intervention by midwives (birth emotions - looking to improve expectant fear (BELIEF)) on decreasing childbirth fear and self-efficacy among first-time pregnant women who were afraid of giving birth. Methods A number of 80 pregnant women participated in the study. They had received a score of ≥66 on the Wijma delivery expectancy/experience questionnaire. They were randomly assigned into two groups: intervention (n = 40) and control groups (n = 40). The intervention group received two face-to-face counseling sessions based on the BELEF protocol in the 24th and 34th weeks of pregnancy. Between these two sessions, it also received eight telephone-counseling sessions once a week. The control group only received the prenatal routine care. The outcome measures were childbirth fear, childbirth self-efficacy, and childbirth preference. Results The intervention group showed significantly more reduction in childbirth fear and more increase in childbirth self-efficacy compared to the control group. In addition, more women in the intervention group reported that they preferred to give normal vaginal birth than women in the control group. Conclusion The BELIEF protocol could be an effective approach in reducing childbirth fear and increasing childbirth self-efficacy among first-time pregnant women who are afraid of giving birth. Abstract Background Service satisfaction ratings from clients are a good indicator of service quality. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of communication skills and self-efficacy training for healthcare workers on clients’ satisfaction. Methods A quasi-experimental study was conducted in health centers of Saveh University of Medical Science in Iran. Primary Healthcare (PHC; N = 105) workers and service recipients (N = 364) were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. The intervention group received four 90-min training sessions consisting of lecture, film screening, role-playing, and discussion group. Before and 3 months after the intervention, a multi-part questionnaire (including demographics, self-efficacy and communication skills in PHC workers; and satisfaction questionnaire in service recipients) was completed by participants in both intervention and control groups. Results PHC worker mean scores of self-efficacy and communication skills after the educational program were increased in the intervention group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Also, mean satisfaction scores for service recipients of the intervention group (PHC workers) generally significantly increased compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Conclusions The educational program improved the self-efficacy, and communication skills in health workers and improved client satisfaction overall. Our results support the application of self-efficacy and communication skills training for other medical groups who wish to improve clients satisfaction as an important health services outcome.

Shiftwork nurses experience physical and psychological health problems related to shift work. This study aimed to examine the effects of Meridian acupressure on stress, fatigue, anxiety, and self-efficacy of shiftwork nurses in South Korea. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was employed. Study participants were a total of 59 shiftwork nurses (intervention group: n = 29, control group: n = 30) in S hospital, Seoul, South Korea. The study was conducted at nurse stations in S hospital. Meridian acupressure as intervention was conducted for a total of 15 min on six Meridian acupressure points (GV 20, GB 12, GB 21, LI 11, SI 3, KI 1), 2 min 30 s (10 times for 15 s at a time) on each Meridian point. Measures were the stress scale, fatigue scale, State Anxiety Inventory, and self-efficacy scale, in Korean. Data were collected from July to August 2018. There were significant differences in the degrees of stress, fatigue, and anxiety of shiftwork nurses between the two groups. Meridian acupressure significantly decreased stress, fatigue, and anxiety of shiftwork nurses. This study provides preliminary evidence that Meridian acupressure was an effective intervention. Meridian acupressure could be applied to shiftwork nurses in various clinical situations.

Background: Diabetes Mellitus is also known diabetes, as a chronic disease which will trigger various complications both microvascular and macrovascular. This is what leads diabetes patient to have high risk of low self-efficacy. Low of self-efficacy causes a decrease in self care. Therefore, to improve the patient’s self-efficacy is changing their mindset. Bibliotherapy is a treatment using written materials to guide and encourage the patients to challenge unhelpful thoughts. This research aims at discovering the influence of bibliotherapy on self-efficacy of diabetes patients.Methods: This is a quantitative research using quasi-experimental with control group design. The number of samples in this research is 40 respondents, consisting of 20 intervention groups and 20 control group by simple random sampling method. The sample in this research is diabetes patients with such inclusion criteria as (1) 36-60 years of age, (2) having the ability to read well, (3) willing to be a research respondent. Meanwhile, the exclusion criteria are (1) diabetes patient with weak condition, (2) experiencing loss of consciousness, (3) having visual and audio problems, and (4) diabetes patient with mental disability. The intervention group undergoes bibliotherapy for 8 session, each session for 60 minutes. The Diabetes Management Self Efficacy Scale (DMSES) to determine the total score of self-efficacy.Results: Most respondents are middle-aged adults (36-55 years) in both groups. Most respondents have suffered from diabetes for less than 5 years, unemployed and tend to have normal BMIs and also obese category 1. The mean score post test in intervention and control group is 37.00 and 25.65 respectively. The results show that there are differences in self-efficacy scores after treatment in control and intervention groups (p=0.000).Conclusions: From our study we concluded that bibliotherapy could improve self-efficacy in diabetic patients.

The purpose of this study was to determine the increase in self-efficacy of adolescents at risk through a combination of psychoeducation therapy with music at SMPN Kota Padang. The research method used in this research is quantitative research with a quasi-experimental research design pre-post test control group. The results showed that the mean score of self-efficacy before the intervention group intervention was lower than the control group. Still, after the intervention was given to adolescents, it showed psychoeducation therapy with music on changes in student self-efficacy at risk. The statistical test results obtained a P value <0.05. In conclusion, there is a significant increase in self-efficacy before and after psychoeducation therapy intervention with music. Keywords: Psychoeducation, Youth, Self Efficacy
