Introduction: We were interested in building on previous studies showing the promotive and buffering roles of social support for emerging adults. We tested the associations of multiple domains of social support (i.e., family, friends) with measures of adjustment and adversity. Methods: Across four studies, U.S. college adults reported on domains of social support (family, friends, significant other), psychological adjustment (i.e., life satisfaction, flourishing), and psychological adversity (i.e., recent stress, depressive symptoms). Studies 1 and 4 were cross-sectional, whereas Studies 2 and 3 involved two, monthly survey reports. Study 4 was completed against the backdrop of early COVID-19 disruptions for college adults in the Spring of 2020. Results: In each study, each domain of social support was positively correlated with measures of adjustment and negatively correlated with measures of adversity. Partial correlations indicated that support from friends was incrementally associated with nearly every outcome, whereas support from family was incrementally associated with a majority of outcomes. Multiphase studies supported unidirectional, but not bidirectional, effects from earlier adjustment onto later social support. Discussion: Overall, findings reinforce the importance of social support for young adults and highlight the distinct importance of family and friends. Findings also suggest that a lack of perceived social support may contribute to risks fitting views such as the stress generation theory among emerging adults.

Introduction: Patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) are at risk for Suicide Ideation (SI). The relationship between Social Support (SS) and Time Perspective (TP) with SI is important among patients with MS. This study was performed to determine the prevalence of SI and the correlation between SS and TP with SI in Iranian patients with MS in Nahavand and Malayer.

Methods: Using a cross-sectional analytic research design, we selected 79 participants among patients with MS in Nahavand and Malayer, Iran. Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Zimbardo’s Time Perspective Inventory were used for collecting the data.

Results: The obtained results indicated that 30.3% of the patients with MS suffered from SI. There was a negative correlation between SS (from family, friends and significant other), Past Positive (PP) and Future (F) orientations and a positive correlation between Past Negative (PN) orientation and SI; SS from significant other and PP negatively predicted the SI in patients with MS.

Conclusion: Based on the obtained results, the relationship between SS, PN, PP, F and SI and the role of SS from significant other and PP in predicting the SI in Nahavand and Malayer patients with MS were confirmed. Thus, it is necessary to develop support systems and apply the TP-based treatments for patients with MS who are at risk for SI.

Penyakit diabetes melitus tipe 2 (DMT2) memerlukan pengontrolan untuk meminimalisir komplikasi melalui penerapan self-managementyang baik. Efektifitas penerapan self-managementdipengaruhi banyak faktor salah satunya dukungan keluarga. Kata kunci: Diabetes melitus, dukungan keluarga, perilaku self-managementAbstractType 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) must be controlled to reduce complications through good self-management behaviour (SMB). The effectiveness of SMB is influenced some factors, one of them is family support. family is the closest social enviroment for patients of DM, thus it is hoped to help, control, and create patient of DM behaviour includes self management behaviour. This study was descrition quantitative with cross sectional approach purposed to determine the level of patients’ perceived of family support in Indonesia. Seventy-eight respondents were included for this study by using concecutive sampling methode. The questionnaire for family support was modified from The Diabetes Social Support Questionnaire-Family Version (DSSQ-Family) with Chronbach Alpha 0,973 and inter-itemcorrelation 0,386-0,859. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive analysis, where family support categorized into favorable (if individual score > the respondents mean score = 69.62) and oppositely. The results showed that more than half of respondents (55,1%) reported favorable family support. Regarding family support domains, social network support noted as the lowest percentage (48.71%). Therefore, it is important for nurses and other healthcare professional to improve family involvement in diabetes care especially improving network support aspect.Key words:Diabetes mellitus, family support, self-management behaviour

Abstract Background This study investigated whether (i) mental disorders were associated with perceived social support and its subcomponents, (ii) current marital status was related to perceived social support, and (iii) ‘Married’ status influenced the relationship between mental state and perceived social support. Methods Data from a cross-sectional national survey comprising 6126 respondents were used. Lifetime diagnosis for five mental disorders was assessed with a structured questionnaire. Perceived social support was measured with the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) that provides Global and subscale scores for Significant Other, Family and Friends. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to address the research questions with MSPSS score as the dependent variable. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was performed to test mediation by marital status. Results All mental disorders included in the study, except alcohol use disorder (AUD), were significantly and negatively associated with Global MSPSS scores. After controlling for sociodemographic factors and chronic physical illness, major depressive disorder (β = - 0.299, 95% CI: -0.484 – -0.113, p = 002) and having any of the five mental disorders (β = - 0.133, 95% CI: -0.254 – -0.012, p = 032) were negatively associated with support from Significant Other, while support from Family and Friends was lower among all disorders, except AUD. Being married was positively associated with perceived social support in people with and without mental disorders. Results of the SEM partially support mediation by mental state - perceived social support relationship by ‘Married’ status. Conclusion Having mental disorders was associated with lower perceived social support. Being married has potential to influence this relationship.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and is able to spread rapidly in humans. Preventive behavior is important for every individual to maintain their health during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to determine the relationship between social support (family, friends, health workers), perceptions of the response to COVID-19, and exposure to social media for COVID-19 prevention behavior. This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Jabodetabek area in May 2020 with a voluntary sampling technique. The participants were 424 respondents. The proportion of respondents with good COVID-19 prevention behavior was 45.2%. The results of the multivariate analysis showed family support (OR = 2.736; 95% CI = 1.654 - 4.517), peer support (OR = 2.035; 95% CI = 1.205 - 3,436), support from health professionals (OR = 1.729; 95% CI = 1.023 - 2,923); and sources of information regarding COVID-19 (OR = 1,692; 95% CI = 1,036 - 2,764) had a significant relationship with COVID-19 prevention behavior (P <0.05). It can be concluded that family support has dominant influence on COVID-19 prevention behavior in Jabodetabek community. For this reason, social support from the smallest scale (family) and reliable sources of information related to COVID-19 are needed so that community can implement COVID-19 prevention behavior properly in daily life. Hasil analisis multivariat menunjukkan dukungan keluarga (OR= 2,736; CI 95%= 1,654 - 4,517), dukungan teman (OR=2,035; CI 95%= 1,205 - 3,436), dukungan tenaga kesehatan (OR=1,729; CI 95%= 1,023 - 2,923); dan sumber informasi mengenai COVID-19 (OR= 1,692; CI 95%= 1,036 - 2,764) memiliki hubungan yang signifikan terhadap perilaku pencegahan COVID-19 (P<0,05).

Abstract. Background: Although suicide loss has been associated with several negative outcomes, numerous studies have shown that loss survivors can experience posttraumatic growth (PTG) following the suicide loss of a significant other. However, few studies have explored the mechanisms of such growth. Aims: The aim of this study was to identify predictors of PTG among a sample of adult suicide loss survivors and to explore whether the amount of time since the suicide loss moderated the relation between self-reported coping and PTG. Method: Suicide-bereaved adults (n = 307) completed online questionnaires measuring personality, coping, help-seeking attitudes, social support, and PTG. Results: Hierarchical regression analyses showed five independent associations with PTG: time since loss, perceived closeness, help-seeking attitudes, social support, and problem-focused coping. Time since loss did not moderate the relation between any of the self-reported coping styles and PTG. Limitations: The limitations of this study include a cross-sectional design, potential selection bias, no comparison or control group, and unrepresentative sample demographics of suicide loss survivors. Conclusion: Problem-focused coping showed the strongest association with PTG, independent of time since loss, suggesting that this coping style may facilitate growth throughout the grief trajectory.

Purpose – Academic and psychological adjustment of international students is central to their success while pursuing their degrees abroad. However, acculturation stress is abundant and may pose as a challenge. Thus, in this study we examined whether social support mediates the association between acculturation stress and academic and psychological adjustment. Methodology – A cross sectional research design was employed. A total of 200 postgraduate international students from three Malaysian public universities were recruited to participate in the study. The Student Adjustment to College Questionnaire was employed to measure their academic adjustment and psychological adjustment. The Multidimensional Scale for Perceived Social Support and the Acculturative Stress Scale for International Students were used to collect data on social support and acculturation stress. Path analysis by AMOS 23 was used to test the hypothesized relationship. Findings – Results provided support for the proposed model, revealing that social support was associated with greater academic and psychological adjustment among international students. Significance – The present study has implications for university policies, counsellors, and student affairs departments on the need to take measures to facilitate healthy academic and psychological adjustment among international students.

AbstractObjective:Employing a cross-sectional design, the current study examined the relationships between various agents and types of support and posttraumatic growth (PTG) among women with breast cancer.Method:Eighty married women who were coping with breast cancer completed social support and PTG questionnaires. Results:All agents of social support (family, friends, belief-based), excluding spousal support, and all types of social support were found to be related to the various PTG dimensions and its total score. Regression analyses revealed that, among the agents of support, only support provided from friends and belief-based support uniquely contribute to prediction of total PTG score. While examining the contribution of various types of support, only cognitive support had a unique contribution to prediction of total PTG score.Significance of results:Various agents and types of support play different roles in the PTG process following breast cancer. Accordingly, friends as an agent of support and information as a type of support seem to be most important in enhancing PTG among women with breast cancer.

Purpose: Social support has been identified as a determinant of physical activity (PA), but research has been primarily cross-sectional, with mixed findings for different Hispanic subgroups and limited longitudinal research with Hispanics. The purpose of this study is to assess the longitudinal associations of social support with PA in Hispanics on the Texas-Mexico Border. Design and sample: We used 2 time points of data collected from Hispanic adults in the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort (N = 588). Measures: We collected social support for PA and self-reported leisure-time PA. Analysis: We used cross-lagged panel models to assess the association between friend support, family support, family punishment (criticizing or complaining) and PA over time. Results: Although social support overall was low for PA, fully adjusted cross-lagged panel models indicated that time 1 friend support was associated with time 2 PA (adjusted rate ratio = 1.02, 95% confidence interval = 1.00 -1.04), though family support was not associated with time 2 PA. In males, time 1 friend support was inversely associated with time 2 family punishment. Conclusion: As expected, the directionality of the relation appears to be from social support to PA. Friend support appears to be predictive of PA in Hispanics, whereas family support is not. This should be considered in intervention development, particularly because familismo (commitment and mutual obligation to family) is considered to be a strong value in these communities.
