Project-based learning has been recognized as a dynamic classroom approach in which students actively explore real-world problems to obtain deeper knowledge. This study aimed to describe the implementation of project-based learning to improve students’ scientific writing skills. This action research study conducted based on Lesson Study (LS) which incorporated plan-do-see phase. The descriptive research was using 40 undergraduate students in the sixth semester in Biology Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang who attended Microtechnique course. The students’ scientific writing skills were measured using student worksheet which asked them to develop a scientific article. The measured parameters were how student proposed introduction, problem statement, method, result, discussion, conclusion, and reference. The data were analyzed descriptively. The result showed that students’ scientific writing skills were improved after implementing project-based learning. Some of the obstacles to implementing LS were related to the schedule and preparation. It can be resolved by conducting more intense coordination and regular discussions involving all research members.

Scientific writing and communication skills of undergraduate students in the Biology Education Program of University of Palangka Raya need to be improved. The purpose of this research was to implement mini-research in animal ecology field practice to train undergraduate students’ scientific writing and communication skills. This descriptive quantitative research used action-research method with two cycles in which each cycle consisted of four stages i.e (1) plan; (2) take action; (3) collect and analyze evidences, and (4) reflect. The data gained were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively. The results showed that the gain score of students’ scientific writing skills based on mini-research assessment was 0.6 (moderate category). Moreover, students' communication skills showed an improvement from cycle 1 to cycle 2 which was assessed during the presentation session. All the findings in this study indicate that the implementation of the mini-research project in the field practice of the animal ecology course helps students to develop scientific writing and communication skills.

Students’ motivation and their collaborative skills play a crucial role in determining the learning quality. The lower the motivation and collaborative skills the lower the learning quality. This lesson study-based classroom action research aimed at improving the students’ learning motivation and collaborative skills by implementing a Remap Jigsaw learning model. The subjects of this research were the fifth semester undergraduate students of Biology Education of Universitas Negeri Malang, who were taking the Basic Skills of Teaching course. The research was conducted in four cycles in which the each cycle consisted of two meetings. The instruments of data collection were the observation sheets and assessment sheets of students’ self-report. The data was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed that students’ learning motivation increased from 66.25% in the cycle I to 84.37% in the cycle IV; while the students’ collaborative skills enhanced from 50% to 70.83% in the cycle IV. In the other words, the Remap Jigsaw combined with modelling activities can improve students’ motivation and their collaborative skills.

The main purpose of this study was to develop interdisciplinary project-based learning and investigate the process and effectiveness of project-based learning involving undergraduate students in the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering in a college in Taiwan. The theme of this research project was “boat design and building.” This study used the revised PIPER (PIPER; Preparation / Implementation / Presentation / Evaluation / Revision) model to design the project activities and integrated the learning of the following three courses: “Operation and application of 3D boat mold design software,” “Boat building,” and “Boat parts design and building practices.” In teaching and research, the students carried out via the learning by doing and experimental courses, the final completion of the boat design and construction. This study selected a total of 97 students as the subjects and conducted text analysis, a questionnaire survey to collect data. The research results showed that project-based learning in combination with hands-on learning could guide students in completing the design and building of a real boat. This learning method provided students with brand-new experiences, enabled them to experience the pleasure of boat design, and effectively elicited a positive attitude toward boat-building engineering and learning effectiveness. Moreover, this study proposed suggestions for the project process that could inform future interdisciplinary project-based learning in colleges.

Reviewing scientific articles published in journals is a competency needed by students to improve their writing skills. As a form of implementation of Higher Education Tri Dharma in the field of education, lecturers are responsible for training students to review articles. To provide optimal learning facilities, information is needed related to student difficulties in reviewing articles in journals. This study aims to diagnose the difficulties of undergraduate students at PGSD FKIP Mataram University in reviewing scientific articles in journals. The study was conducted on S1 students of PGSD FKIP Mataram University who programed Quantitative Research Methods courses. The research subject of 36 students was determined using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection is done by assigning students to review 1 scientific article published by a SINTA accredited journal. The results of the review by students were analyzed descriptively to determine the location of student difficulties. The results showed that the largest proportion of student difficulties lies in the research method (86.11%), then the research problem (44.44%), and the smallest proportion is the research result (5.56%). Information from the results of this study can be used as a reference for providing learning facilities to improve student review skills. This skill can help students in completing theses which have been a problem for many undergraduate students at PGSD FKIP Mataram University.

Improving learning quality in 21st can not be separated from contextual learning and student-centered learning paradigm. Through the contextual lesson study program conducted in learning-forest prototype to build learning community. The objectives of this research were to improve learning activities of postgraduate students in Biology Education department and to build a learning community. The implementation of lesson study was conducted in the Biology Learning Innovation subject for postgraduate students while practicing to observe open lesson was conducted in the undergraduate students which used learning forest-prototype. The postgraduate students took roles as planner, observer, and reflector in the plan, do (open lesson), and see (reflection) activities. The lesson study implementation was conducted for three cycles in even semester of academic year 2015/2016. Students learned collaboratively and contextually. The postgraduate students’ learning activities were observed by six observers from lecturer colleagues. The research results showed that the students were able to implement planning, open lesson, and reflection properly. The average of student’s learning activity grade was 91.11% from all of students, with the grade averages for planning, open lesson, and reflection activities were 88.89%, 93.33%, and 91.11% respectively. The implementation of this lesson study in the learning forest-prototype can be done in other relevant subjects to strengthen learning activities.

The study examined the perceived effects of Computer-Based Examination (CBE) on essay writing skills of undergraduates in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State. One research question was raised and answered while the three hypotheses were formulated and tested in the study. The descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The population of this covered all the 27,388 regular undergraduate students in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. A sample size of 546 students were selected for the study. The proportional random sampling technique was used to select 2% of the total number of students across each of the faculties in the institution. The instrument used for the collection of data was developed by the researcher and titled: “Computer Based Examination Perception Questionnaire (CBEPQ)”. The instrument has a reliability alpha (α) of 0.78. The research question was analysed using the mean ( ) and standard deviation (S.D) while the t-test statistics for two independent samples was used to test hypothesis 1, 2 and 3 at 0.05 level of significance. Based on findings, it can be concluded that computer-based examination (CBE) has effect on their essay writing skills as undergraduates in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State. Hence, it is concluded that undergraduate students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma perceived that computer-based examination (CBE) has effect on their essay writing skills. Female undergraduates of Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State had higher perception on the effect of CBE on essay writing but their perception of CBE on essay writing did not differ by age and level of study.
