This paper deals with the novel entitled The Blacker the Berry written by Wallace Thurman. The focus of analysis is on the existence of Emma Lou, a young woman with very black skin. The literary research method used is the contextual method supported by Sartre’s ‘Modes of Existence’, Bergoffen’s concept on female’s body, the concept of intra-racial racism, and Faludi’s ‘Backlash’ framed in feminist literary criticism. The result shows that it is not easy for a young, black-skinned woman to live in a world still strictly applied intra-racial racism. She has to endure a bombardment of existential backlashes in the form of otherness due to the ideology adoring lighter skin. Her decision to construct her own existence emerges after she is able to accept her specific blackness.

Katakunci: feminis, konstruksi sosial, lajang, perjodohan Abstract:Singleness is considered an unnatural thing for adult women. This research was conducted to reveal how single women and matchmaking are featured in Netty Vigiantini's novel Jodoh Terakhir (2016). The method used is descriptive qualitative with sociological literary approaches and feminist literary criticism. Data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences were collected using the note-taking technique after going through closed reading. The data are then classified, interpreted, and analyzed with relevant theories. The results of this study indicate that single women are considered unnatural and violate the rules, so to return them to the normative path, matchmaking is used as a solution. In the novel, it is revealed that there are resistance and negotiation from female characters in responding to the marriage that was forced on her. The suspicion that the text will tend to be feminist is not proven, because the discourse developed by the author is the obedience of girls to social constructs that are instilled through the family structure. Keywords: feminist, social construction, single, matchmaking

Family reactions and assessments of all family members towards family members belonging to specific religious groups still occur. This interpretation can trigger disharmony in the family and is an interesting social phenomenon to research. This research uses a qualitative research method. This research assumes that empirical realities occur in a socio-cultural context that is interrelated with one another. This research aims to describe family reactions, family social relationships, and family assessments on their family members’ involvement in specific religious groups. The informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique by taking three people from each religious group (Jamaah Tabligh, Wahdah Islamiyah, and Lembaga Dakwah Islam Indonesia known as LDII). Data were collected using in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The data analysis used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The results showed that family social relations on family members’ involvement in certain religious groups tended to get the same reaction based on their interpretation. Contravention interpretation from dominant family on family members belonging to specific religious groups still occurs compared with accommodative relationships. Meanwhile, family assessments on their family members’ involvement in certain religious groups are generally negative.

This article reveals a picture of discrimination against women that occurs in a Shiite Muslims community in Lebanon. As is well known, Shi'a Muslims are second only to Sunnis in Lebanese Muslims as a whole, even though both populations are balanced. Islam itself became the second religion after Christianity in Lebanon and there are still several other religions (sects). Lebanon accommodates the growth of many religions that have a variety rules for their followers, so there is often attraction in making decisions regarding state laws and regulations, especially relating to women. Feminist Literary Criticism is used to explain all literary phenomena relating to women that aesthetically spread in the Hikayah az-Zahra novel which is the object of the research, this is due to the peculiarities of women which can only be explained using their own perspective. The results of this study will show a variety of forms of discrimination against women in Shiite circles, which are part of the daily lives of Lebanese people in situations of prolonged conflict. Shiite women, represented by the character of Zahra, cannot even expect protection from anywhere, including family members.

Kyz ala kachuu (Kyrgyz: кыз ала качуу) translated as “to take a young woman and run away” is a form of women kidnapping for marriage purposes in Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyz Republic). This term applies to either of the performed actions: kidnapping with permission from the future wife, and without her consent. In this article, I propose an anthropological interpretation of bride kidnapping, using the concept of ‘person-making’. In my analysis, I go beyond the act of kidnapping itself, which I present as part of a wider social process. Drawing on my fieldwork in Northern Kyrgyzstan, I show that marriage through kidnapping is the first stage in the social process of building female subjectivity and the way ofreproduction of Kyrgyz families. The reproduction takes place through the acquisition, familiarization, and constitution of subjectivity resulting from the collective agency of all the family members.
