Extracts from the inner stem bark of Berberis vulgaris were analyzed for their antioxidant activity using the 1,1-dipheny-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and compared with ascorbic acid (AA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). The most active extracts were analyzed for their chemical composition using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Acetone extract was found to be the most active as an antioxidant agent at 98.61%, which was higher than the value of vitamin C (93.03%) at the concentration of 0.16 mg/mL. The major components identified in the acetone extract were tetracosanoic acid, methyl ester (26.36%), followed by phthalic acid, diisooctyl ester (20.93%), 1,2-bis(trimethylsiloxy) ethane (10.26%), and 1,2-benzendicarboxylic acid, diisononyl ester (8.70%). The dissolved water:methanol (1:1 v/v) partitioned from acetone extract afforded 12 fractions; among them, fraction F11 was found to have good antioxidant activity (95.41%) at the concentration of 0.16 mg/mL. The major compounds identified in F11 were N-methyl-4-(hydroxybenzyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoloine (28.82%), 9-α-hydroxy-17β-(trimethylsilyl-oxy)-4-anderostene-3-methyloxime (13.97%), ribitol, pentaacetate (9.76%), 1-methyl-4-[4,5-dihydroxyphenyl]-hexahydropyridine (6.83%), and 2-ethylacridine (4.77%).

Gold sea cucumber extract (Stichopus hermanni) is rich in collagen and unsatturated fatty acid also known omega 3 such as docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid that highly effective as an antioxidant. Oligomeric proanthocyanidin is the main content in grape seed oil and the most powerful antioxidant agent that can protect collagen. The aim of research was to determine the effect of gold sea cucumber extract concetration on antioxidant activity of grape seed oil nanoemulsion. The three formulas with results test of antioxidant activity with DPPH method using 15% Brij CS12® and 30% propylene glycol has done which the oil phase was dispersed in the aqueous phase.Variation that have been done is to use the antioxidant activity (IC50) of gold sea cucumber extract  for 2, 4, and 6 times. The resulting preparations was conformed of organoleptic, nanoemulsion type, clarity, globule size, viscosity and rheology, pH and freez thaw test. Antioxidant activity of gold sea cucumber extract and grape seed oil were  (IC50= 53.79 and 17.41 μg/mL respectively). The nanoemulsion was analysed using two-way ANOVA method. Antioxidant  activity at storage for 0; 2 and 4-weeks of formula I, II, III were (IC50=  49.15; 49.45, 51.15 µg/mL), (IC50= 44.12, 47.48, 48.14 µg/mL), and (IC50= 42.14, 43.45, 45.33 µg/mL) respectively. Can be concluded that the higher concentration of gold sea cucumber extract, the antioxidant activity of nanoemulsion is higher, but it decreased during the storage.

The chemical composition of the essential oils from the leaves and stem bark of Eclipta prostrata (L.) L. and the aerial parts of Vernonia amygdalina Delile (Asteraceae) have been analyzed by capillary gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The investigation led to the identification of 33 and 30 compounds in the oils of the leaves and stem of E. prostrate, respectively, and 40 compounds in the oil of V. amygdalina. While the oil of the leaves of E. prostrata was highly dominated by sesquiterpenoids (89.3%), the stem bark was comprised of sesquiteprenoids (47.7%), straight chain hydrocarbons (25.6%) and monoterpenoids (11.1%). The main constituents of both oils were β-caryophyllene (47.7% and 15.9%) and α-humulene (31.8 and 12.9%) in the leaves and stem, respectively. In addition, ( E)-β-farnesene (10.0%) was also identified in significant amount in the stem bark. On the other hand, the major component of V. amygdalina oil was α-muurolol (45.7%).

Gayam (Inocarpus fagiferus Fosb) is a tropical plant whose stem bark has been used as traditional medicine. This research aims to identify the flavonoides isolate from stem bark of gayam and identify the class of flavonoids compound as antioxidant. Extraction of 1000 g stem bark powder with 8500 mL of 96 % ethanol to yield 30 g concentrated ethanol extract. Partition of 15 g extract ethanol-water (7:3) with chloroform and n-buthanol to yield 1,5 g concentrated chloroform extract, 5,87 g concentrated n-buthanol extract and 5,63 g concentrated water extract. The flavonoids test using Wilstatter and Bate-Smith Matcalf reagent showed that n-buthanol and water extract contain flavonoids compounds. Antioxidant activity of flavonoids tested with DPPH method and lipid peroxide ammonium thiocyanate method showed that n-buthanol extract had antioxidant activity with IC50 of 24 ppm and n-buthanol extract has ability to inhibit the formation of lipid peroxide with inhibition value of 63,04 %. Separation of n-buthanol extract using thin layer chromatography preparative with chloroform as mobile phase and silica gel GF254 as stationary phase obtained four fractions. Flavonoids test showed that fraction F3 contained flavonoids compounds. FTIR analysis indicated that isolate had functional groups such as  -OH , C=O, C-O alcohol, C=C aromatic, C-H aromatic and C-H aliphatic. UV-vis spectra showed 2 peaks at ? 310 nm  and  261 nm which indicated flavonoids group of  isolfavone with hydroxyl groups at C-5 and  C-7. Antioxidant activity test with DPPH method showed that the isolate had antioxidant activity with IC50 of 1 ppm.

The goal of this study was to investigate the efficacy and the safety of grape pomace (Vitis labrusca L.) obtained from the winemaking process as an antioxidant raw material for cosmetic formulations. Grape pomace was dried and submitted to extraction with solvents. The extracts were filtered and freeze-dried. The extraction carried out with 75% acetone-water showed a better yield (1.9 g·g−1). High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis confirmed the presence of ellagic acid as an active biocompound in the extracts. The Total phenolic content of freeze-dried extracts reached 69.83 ± 1.02 mg for 75% acetone-water system. Antioxidant activity determined by the 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method revealed there was no statistical difference between the extract (EC50 6.9 ± 0.21) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (EC50 7.6 ± 0.71). Results of cytotoxicity showed that extracts from grape pomace were safe, even at the highest concentration tested (200 mg·mL−1) against the 3T3 cell line. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that there were no morphological cell changes of cells treated. Cytoprotection of cells towards the oxidation promoted by the peroxide solution was observed in the lowest concentration tested (0.73 mg·mL−1). Grape pomace from the winemaking process revealed a significant antioxidant activity attributed to its biocompounds. The safety and efficacy of extracts of grape pomace as raw material for cosmetic formulations was proposed through cell culture assays.

This study aimed to evaluate traditional Brazilian sausage (linguiça calabresa) elaborated with oregano and basil extracts as natural antioxidants. Hydroalcoholic extracts of dried oregano and basil leaves were prepared, freeze-dried, and evaluated for antioxidant activity by Folin-Ciocalteu, DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS assays. Freeze-dried oregano extract showed higher (p < 0.05) antioxidant activity than freeze-dried basil extract by all methods. Extracts were used in preparations of seven sausage formulations, as follows: F1, 0.05% oregano extract and 0.05% basil extract; F2, 0.1% oregano extract and 0.05% basil extract; F3, 0.05% oregano extract and 0.1% basil extract; F4, 0.075% oregano extract and 0.075% basil extract, F5, 0.1% oregano extract and 0.1% basil extract; F6 (control), without extract; and F7, 0.01% butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Sausage formulations were analyzed for chemical composition, pH, acidity, water activity, lipid oxidation, color, and texture. Formulations showed differences in pH at different storage periods. F1, F2, F3, and F7 had the lowest (p < 0.05) lipid oxidation values at 53 days of storage. F1, F2, F6, and F7 showed higher a* values and lower b* values. Hardness and chewiness decreased (p < 0.05) during storage for all formulations. F1, F2, and F3 had similar efficiency to that with synthetic antioxidant BHT (F7), therefore, oregano and basil extracts have potential application as natural antioxidants in the food industry.

Background: Thymus fontanesii is one of the important Algerian plants, used traditionally to treat the cough and cold. In addition, it may help to protect the people against lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress and can be used as an antioxidant agent for the preservation of processed food. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the chemical composition of Algerian Thymus fontanesii essential oil and to test its antioxidant activity. Methods: The oil was extracted by electromagnetic induction (EMI) heating assisted extraction and by hydrodistillation, and was analysed by Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detector (GC/FID) and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). The antioxidant activity was evaluated by three assays mainly: DPPH assay, reducing power and β-carotene/linoleic acid. Results: The yield of the essential oil was varied from 2.1 ± 0.3 to 3.1 ± 0.1% (w/w), and from 1.8 ± 0.01 to 2.6 ± 0.02% (w/w), for the electromagnetic induction heating assisted extraction and hydrodistillation, respectively. Twenty seven components were identified representing 95.6 - 99.9% of the oil. Carvacrol (54.7 ± 1.2 - 63.9 ± 1.9%) was the major compound followed by p-cymene (9.2 ± 1.2 - 17.5 ± 1.2%) and γ-terpinene (8.8 ± 0.9 - 14.9 ± 0.8%). The Thymus fontanesii essential oil was found as a significant antioxidant with IC50 values ranging from 57.3 ± 1.4 to 236.7 ± 1.4 μg/mL, which were higher than that of butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT) choosing as reference (9.1 ± 1.2 to 67.8 ± 0.1 μg/mL). Conclusion: The obtained results encourage the use of Thymus species with bioactive compounds for further food applications.

Caulerpa racemose is one type of seaweed that has the greatest potential in Indonesia. Caulerpa racemose has attracted many attentions as an antioxidant agent which is potential for cosmetic industries. The study aims to analyze the antioxidant content of Caulerpa racemose and determining its effectiveness as an anti-aging lotion. testing the antioxidant activity of Caulerpa racemosa using the DPPH method. Caulerpa racemosa contains phenol compounds that function as antioxidants. The results showed that value antioxidant activity of Caulerpa racemosa lotion is very higher, value IC50 reach 0,58 ppm (a compound is called a very strong antioxidant if the value of IC50 is <50 ppm) and the results test of Caulerpa racemose lotion was appropriate with quality standard SNI 16-4399-1996 about the standards sunscreen preparations for the skin. This paper presents the first-time production lotion from Caulerpa racemose.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical compound of the antioxidant activity of the extract from andaliman fruit (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC.) and the quality parameters and the total flavonoid determination of the highest antioxidant activity. Methods: The andaliman fruits were extracted using a solvent such as n-hexane, ethyl acetate and 70% ethanol obtained extracts, follow the antioxidant activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The quality parameters and total flavonoid determination were performed from highest antioxidant activity. Fractionated was done using vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) with the mobile phase chloroform-methanol (9:1 ~1:9). Purification with Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) preparative, identification using UV-spectrophotometry, FTIR, Gas chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) analysis. Results: The 70% of ethanol has the highest antioxidant activity with IC50 value 84.11±0.47 ppm; the quality parameters in this study meet the quality requirements, both specific and nonspecific parameters. Total flavonoid content of the 70% ethanol extract was 2.37±0.02%. The results of the GCMS studies showed the presence of 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, mono (2-ethylhexyl) ester; squalene, methyl palmitate, methyl isopalmitate, n-tetracosanol-1 and 4-isopropyl chalcone. Conclusion: The results indicate that the 70% ethanol extracts of andaliman fruits contains 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, mono (2-ethylhexyl) ester; squalene, methyl palmitate, methyl isopalmitate, n-tetracosanol-1 and 4-isopropyl chalcone have antioxidant activity with IC50 value 51.35 ppm.

Abstract. Batubara R, Hanum TI, Affandi O, Wahyuni HS. 2020. Chemical compounds contained in young and mature leaves of agarwood species Wikstroemia tenuiramis and its antioxidant properties. Biodiversitas 21: 4616-4622. The genus Wikstroemia is one of the genus of agarwood producing trees which has not been widely researched and published. One type of this genus is Wikstroemia tenuiramis Miq, which grows naturally in North Sumatra, the leaves are like other types of agarwood leaves can be used as raw material for agarwood leaves tea. A research has been conducted to determine the chemical contents contained in the young and mature leaves of agarwood plants species W. Tenuiramis. This research methods applied qualitative analysis using phytochemical screening, quantitative analysis to determine tannin content using titration method, antioxidant activity analysis using 2,2-diphenil-1-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) method, and compound tracing using Py-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) instruments. The qualitative phytochemical analysis results showed no difference in chemical compounds contained in both the young and mature leaves. Both the young and mature leaves contained flavonoids, triterpenoids, and tannins, and did not contain alkaloids, steroids and saponins. The young contained tannins of 1.079 ± 0.001% and the mature contained tannins of 4.645 ± 0.021%, not significant statistically. Py-GC-MS analysis showed the presence of various 30 bioactive compounds contained in both young and mature leaves. The analysis results also showed that both the young and mature leaves had very strong antioxidant activity. Our findings suggest that the two types of leaves have equal utility value of in term of chemical contents and antioxidant potentials.

Abstract This work describes the preliminary evaluation of cytotoxic, antimicrobial, molluscicidal, antioxidant and anticholinesterase activities from leaf (LECF) and stem bark alcoholic extracts (BECF) of the species Croton floribundus Spreng. (Euphorbiaceae), popularly known as capixingui or tapixingui. BECF presented significant toxicity (LC50 = 89.6 μg/ml) in the Artemia salina Leach, 1819 (Crustacea: Branchiopoda) bioassay, whereas LECF did not show activity (LC50 > 1000 μg/ml). From DPPH method, the values of IC50 for the LECF and BECF were 61.2 μg/ml and 62.2 μg/ml, respectively, showing that C. floribundus has an expressive antioxidant activity. Antimicrobial susceptibility was evaluated by microdilution technique and only BECF was active against Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 39.6 μg/ml). The extracts did not present molluscicidal activity against snail Biomphalaria glabrata Say, 1818 (Gastropoda: Planorbidae). Both extracts revealed the presence of several components with an inhibiting capacity of acetylcholinesterase enzyme on the bioautographic assay. C. floribundus showed to be a promising species considering that it exhibited good biological activity in the most assays performed.
