The article states that the Ukrainian baroque art has become differentiated into the high, middle and lower stylistic levels. There were certain connections between them, and new art genres appeared on the verges of these levels. The problem of the connection between distinct stylistic levels of the Ukrainian musical baroque has not yet attracted the attention of researchers. The study examines the links between the Ukrainian school Christmas drama of the XVIIth– XVIIIth centuries and the puppet Nativity play theatre. It is noted that for the first time a comparison of these two kinds of theatrical art is drawn in terms of the use of a musical factor in them. It is established that the first act of the Nativity play drama is related to the high style of Ukrainian Christmas school drama. This is revealed on the basis of analysing the dramatic functions of a Choir in both school drama and Nativity play drama. A choir in these spectacles took an active part in revealing the Christmas story, playing the role of a character. What they had in common was the genre of spiritual chant with the syllabic versification. Despite its association with the high style of school drama, the Nativity play drama was a quite new theatrical genre that belongs to the middle stylistic level. Focusing on the folk environment, authors of the Nativity play drama intelligibly conveyed to a wide audience the sacred plot. It is noted that in the second act of the Nativity scene were adapted interludes of school dramas, which represented the lower stylistic level of the Baroque. In this act, a funny line came to the fore, and a musical component is marked by influences of the Ukrainian musical folklore with a predominance of its dancing variety. The interaction of folklore with the lower version of the Baroque had a great potential for the further development of the Ukrainian national theatre. Due to the fact that music was an integral part of the puppet Nativity play drama and played an important dramatic function, this theatrical spectacle, like some school dramas, had the features of the drama with music genre. Thus, school drama and Nativity play drama created the foundation, on which in the XIXth century, the Ukrainian dramaturgy emerged, with a significant role of the musical factor in it, which was essentially a drama with music.

This chapter reviews the political sympathies of soldiers – both officers and rank and file - in the age of high Victorian imperialism and emerging British democracy. It examines the role of the army in growing working class support for popular imperialism, often fuelled by racism. Whilst it acknowledges the overall tendency for officers to support Conservatism, it uncovers tenacious support for Liberalism on the part of some of the officer corps. This extended to many of the rank and file in the post-Chartist period, with post discharge soldiers actively supporting all types of reform movements and taking an active part in the mass democracy brought about by the 1867 and 1884 Reform Acts. With the development of socialism from the 1880s this even extended to a significant number of ‘soldier socialists’, surveyed here for the first time.

AbstractZKSCAN3 encodes a zinc-finger transcription factor that regulates the expression of important genes and plays a significant role in tumor development, pathogenesis, and metastasis. However, its biological functions under normal physiological conditions remain largely unknown. In our previous studies, using flow cytometry, we found that the deletion of Zkscan3 may cause abnormal erythropoiesis. In this study, we found that, in a Zkscan3 knockout mice model, the number of splenic early-stage (basophilic-erythroblasts) and late-stage (chromatophilic-erythroblasts to polychromatophilic-erythroblasts through orthochromatophilic-erythroblasts) erythroblasts increased, whereas the number of late erythroblasts in the bone marrow decreased. Moreover, the phenotype was exacerbated after treating mice with phenylhydrazine (PHZ), which causes severe hemolytic anemia. In the knockout mice treated with PHZ, the percentage of reticulocyte in the peripheral blood conspicuously increased, whereas MCHC and red blood cells decreased. Then, we performed RNA-seq and quantitative-polymerase chain reaction assay and found that the expression of GATA1 and Tiam1 in erythroblasts were upregulated, whereas KLF1 was downregulated. Luciferase assays showed that Zkscan3 inhibited the transcription of GATA1 and Tiam1 and promoted the expression of KLF1. Additionally, ChIP and CO-IP results confirmed that Zkscan3 directly interacts with GATA1 and inhibits its transcriptional activity in MEL cells. Our results demonstrate, for the first time, the significant role of Zkscan3 in physiological erythropoiesis through the interaction with GATA1, both at the DNA and protein level, and with Tiam1 and KLF1 at the DNA level.

In 1821 Augustus Bozzi Granville FRS unwrapped and dissected an ancient Egyptian mummy, presenting the results of his examination to the Royal Society in 1825. He commissioned artist Henry Perry to draw the process in stages; these drawings were subsequently engraved by James Basire for publication in Philosophical Transactions . This article presents the original drawings for the first time, allowing comparison with their engravings. Taken together with Granville's accounts of the unwrapping of the mummy, the drawings demonstrate the significant role of illustration and other visual practices in anatomical argumentation in the early nineteenth century, as well as the prestige that commissioned illustrations lent to the performance and dissemination of scientific expertise. Moreover, the drawings include one of the key visual tropes of race science—a skull in left-facing profile, mapped with a facial angle—and thus indicate the early incorporation of Egyptian mummies into typologies of race.

Background: Generalized eruptive histiocytoma (GEH) is a rare, benign non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis characterized by widespread and symmetric skin-colored to blue-red papules on the trunk and proximal extremities affecting mainly adults. GEH is associated with a self-limiting course lasting from 1 month to over 12 years, and the lesions typically resolve spontaneously; therefore, reports of potential therapies for GEH are lacking. Objective: We report for the first time the use of isotretinoin in the treatment of GEH. An otherwise healthy 53-year-old female with a 3-month history of GEH had resolution of lesions without further development of new lesions over 8 months of treatment with isotretinoin, although, eventually, lesions began to recur. Conclusion: Although there has been success with isotretinoin in the management of Rosai-Dorfman disease and Langerhans cell histiocytosis, further investigation is needed to delineate the exact mechanism of action and future role of isotretinoin in the management of GEH.

Purpose. To analyze using the system of official statistics in studying tourism in cross-border areas in Poland. The additional purpose is analysis of the evolution of the system in terms of changes in environment and needs. Method. Method of description, critical and comparative analyses. The system of official statistics was described from a subjective, objective and territorial perspective. Documents, legal acts, publications and statistical research results were catalogued, analysed and compared in terms of their use in studies on cross-border tourism, particularly taking into account the time after Poland joined the Schengen area. Findings. A synergy of two objective subsystems of the official statistics system becomes essential, i.e. tourism statistics and cross-border statistics. When Poland joined the Schengen area, the role of cross-border statistics increased. New studies and publications appeared. Five out of sixteen Euroregions were studied and all borderlands, except for the Polish-Lithuanian borderland. The achievements of official statistics in cross-border tourism are difficult to use because of the inconsistent delimitation of cross-border areas and the incompatibility of studies regarding the territorial, time and objective aspects. Research and conclusion limitations. In the work, only the system of official statistics in Poland was studied, particularly taking into account the time after Poland joined the Schengen area. In the context of cross-border tourism, it would be valuable to complete the studies with the statistical systems of neighbouring countries. Practical implications. The study results will be useful in all analyses on the development of cooperation and cross-border tourism in Poland. They will help to indicate the directions of further development and a possible modification of cross-border statistics and tourism statistics. Originality. For the first time, an attempt has been made to reach all possible information of the system of official statistics available and present the information in a systemic, chronological and comprehensive way. Type of paper. Review-empirical work.

Abstract The 16th century is the period of intensified processes of assimilation of foreign forms. This period provides insight into the situation of new borrowings which began to appear in the Polish language for the first time in such an extent. A considerable number of borrowed lexemes fosters the establishment of wordformative links between those lexemes in the Polish context. In this manner, the particular derivationrelated nests of foreign origin were developed. In her article, the author emphasizes above all the role of verbal Latin and Greek borrowings in the organisation of the abovementioned nests, inquiring about the extent to which borrowings disrupt the existing word formation system, and about the extent to which these borrowings blend with the word formative “system”. As derivationrelated bases, verbs are associated with two types of formations: with nominal and with verbal derivatives. The wordformative relations which emerged in the Polish language between a borrowed verb and a noun (which is in many cases borrowed as well) are welldocumented already in the period in question (annotacyja – annotować). However, in this period, motivationbased relations between verbal borrowings were not developed, and thus foreign verbal formants did not separate out. The adaptation of these elements in the Polish language, as demonstrated by the further development in the diachronic perspective, is considerably impeded.

The authors’ objective was to study the main aspects of militia’s activities in 1933. This objective is specified in the following tasks: to highlight the work of militia regarding the introduction of passportization in Ukraine; to reveal certain aspects of its activity during the grain supplies in 1933. The authors of the article highlight for the first time the role of militia in carrying out grain supplies in 1933 in Ukraine. Materials on the implementation of passportization in the Republic have been supplemented through the prism of the tasks and activities of militia in this direction. It has been noted that the system of registration and control of population in the cities of Ukrainian SSR was radically changed at the end of 1932. The exact time for the introduction of passportization was chosen not by chance – collectivization in Ukraine ended and the Holodomor began. The result of these processes was a massive flight of peasants from villages who tried to survive and escape from the Holodomor. The main feature of the new passport system was the fact that passports were issued only to those residents of cities, workers’ settlements, state-owned enterprises and new buildings who reached the age of 16 years. An absolute majority of villagers did not have the opportunity to get this document and therefore became attached to their places of residence. Practical conduction of passportization of the population in Ukrainian SSR revealed an unfavorable demographic situation in the country and the presence of a large number of declassed persons who did not have a permanent job or committed crimes. The introduction of the passport system positively affected the organization of combating crime and ensuring state security, the registration of receptees was established. At the same time, passportization was accompanied by numerous repressions of judicial and extrajudicial nature. Militia being a part of the State Political Administration took an active part in the grain supplies campaign of 1932-1933, which led to the Holodomor. That activity had negative and repressive nature. Officers of militia also investigated the cases involving cannibalism.

This article introduces Cognitive Health Counseling 40+ (CH.CO40+), an individualized intervention that is conceptually based on the orchestration model of quality-of-life management ( Martin & Kliegel, 2010 ) and aims at improving satisfaction with cognitive health in adults aged 40 years and older. We describe the theoretically deduced characteristics of CH.CO40+, its target group, its multifactorial nature, its individualization, the application of subjective and objective measures, the role of participants as agents of change, and the rationale for choosing participants’ satisfaction with their cognitive health as main outcome variable. A pilot phase with 15 middle-aged and six older adults suggests that CH.CO40+ attracts, and may be particularly suitable for, subjective memory complainers. Implications of the pilot data for the further development of the intervention are discussed.

Abstract. Background: Little is known about the role of resilience in the likelihood of suicidal ideation (SI) over time. Aims: We examined the association between resilience and SI in a young-adult cohort over 4 years. Our objectives were to determine whether resilience was associated with SI at follow-up or, conversely, whether SI was associated with lowered resilience at follow-up. Method: Participants were selected from the Personality and Total Health (PATH) Through Life Project from Canberra and Queanbeyan, Australia, aged 28–32 years at the first time point and 32–36 at the second. Multinomial, linear, and binary regression analyses explored the association between resilience and SI over two time points. Models were adjusted for suicidality risk factors. Results: While unadjusted analyses identified associations between resilience and SI, these effects were fully explained by the inclusion of other suicidality risk factors. Conclusion: Despite strong cross-sectional associations, resilience and SI appear to be unrelated in a longitudinal context, once risk/resilience factors are controlled for. As independent indicators of psychological well-being, suicidality and resilience are essential if current status is to be captured. However, the addition of other factors (e.g., support, mastery) makes this association tenuous. Consequently, resilience per se may not be protective of SI.
