Abstract The present study consists of the in situ characterization and selection of minimal morphoagronomic descriptors in Passiflora cincinnata genotypes. Forty-one quantitative morphoagronomic descriptors were used, divided in “Plant and Leaf”, “Floral” and “Fruit”. Principal component analysis were used to eliminate descriptors that were less important in the study of multivariate dissimilarity among genotypes. The formation of groups was carried out using Ward’s hierarchical grouping method. The importance of the characters was estimated through the participation of the components by Singh’s method (1981) in order to verify the similarity between lower participation variables in the components. For the set of descriptors “Plant and Leaf” the characteristics that presented the greatest relative contributions were: maximum leaf width 76.1% and leaf blade length 17.2%. For the set of descriptors “Floral” the characteristics that presented the greatest relative contributions were: pedicel length 42.1%, corona tip diameter 32.6% and petal length 11.8%. For the set of descriptors “Fruit” the characteristic that presented the greatest relative contribution was: number of seeds per fruit 89.2%. From the results obtained, we can infer that from the 41 descriptors, only 15 were relevant for the evaluation of the genetic diversity among the individuals of the population. These descriptors were: titratable acidity, bract length, leaf blade length, petal length, sepal length, pedicel length, corona filament ring length, corona tip diameter, fruit longitudinal diameter, sepal width, maximum leaf width, number of fruits, number of seeds per fruit, bark weight and fruit mass.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate the repeatability coefficients of mangaba (Hancornia speciosa) fruit traits, in order to define the number of fruit needed for an accurate selection of superior genotypes, as well as to conjecture about the nature of the phenotypic variation of these traits. Evaluations were performed for 160 fruit of 16 genotypes from two native H. speciosa populations of Goiás Velho and Padre Bernardo, in the state of Goiás, Brazil. Repeatability was estimated by the analysis of variance, principal component analyses based on covariance and on the correlation matrix, and structural analysis based on the correlation matrix. Repeatability estimates for fruit weight, diameter, and length, as well as seed number and weight, were of low magnitude, from 0.02 to 0.62, indicating low heritability. Repeatability estimates for ºBrix, titratable acidity, and ºBrix/acidity ratio were higher, from 0.34 to 0.91, indicating a low to potentially moderate heritability. The number of fruit for an effective selection of the best genotypes for titratable acidity, ºBrix, ºBrix/acidity ratio, and fruit weight is four for a 0.85 accuracy level. However, seven fruit would allow 0.90 accuracy for the same traits, and 0.85 accuracy for fruit length and diameter. The number and weight of seed per fruit are not effective for predicting the real value of a genotype.

In this research, the total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant capacity (FRAP and DPPH•× assays) of pulps and peels of advanced selection of apples grown in Brazil were investigated. The correlation analyses between the activity of polyphenoloxidase enzyme (PPO), vitamin C content, total titratable acidity, and color parameters were performed. The results indicated that the data differed significantly among the apple genotypes studied. The peels of the selection Epagri 170-91 and Epagri 170-25 showed the highest TPC and antioxidant capacities. In addition, the pulps of the Epagri 170-91 presented the highest TPC and antioxidant capacities, the lowest enzymatic browning, highest amount of vitamin C and lowest enzymatic activity when compared with other genotypes. The TPC and antioxidant capacities were significantly correlated in all genotypes analyzed. High correlation values between enzymatic browning and factors that affect the apple color were also found in all analyzed pulps, except between enzymatic browning and TPC. The results demonstrated that the enzymatic browning and TPC, as well as the antioxidant capacity and chemical characteristics, vary considerably depending on the apple genotypes and fruit tissues analyzed.

One degree-of-freedom (DOF) jumping leg has the advantages of simple control and high stiffness, and it has been widely used in bioinspired jumping robots. Compared with four-bar jumping leg, six-bar jumping leg mechanism can make the robot achieve more abundant motion rules. However, the differences among different configurations have not been analyzed, and the choice of configurations lacks basis. In this study, five Watt-type six-bar jumping leg mechanisms were selected as research objects according to the different selection of equivalent tibia, femur and trunk link, and a method for determining the dimension of the jumping leg was proposed based on the movement law of jumping leg of locust in take-off phase. On this basis, kinematics indices (sensitivity of take-off direction angle and trunk attitude angle), dynamics indices (velocity loss, acceleration fluctuation, and mean and variance of total inertial moment) and structure index (distribution of center of mass) were established, and the differences of different configurations were compared and analyzed in detail. Finally, according to the principal component analysis method, the optimal selection method for different configurations was proposed. This study provides a reference for the design of one DOF bioinspired mechanism.

Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is a fruit appreciated by consumers for its well-known physical and sensory characteristics and its health benefits. Being an extremely perishable fruit, it is important to know the unique attributes of the cultivars to develop cultivation or postharvest strategies that can enhance their quality. This study aimed to understand the influence of physicochemical characteristics of two sweet cherry cultivars, Burlat and Van, on the food quality perception. Several parameters (weight, dimensions, soluble solids content (SSC), pH, titratable acidity (TA), colour, and texture) were measured and correlated with sensory data. Results showed that cv. Van presented heavier and firmer fruits with high sugar content. In turn, cv. Burlat showed higher pH, lower TA, and presented redder and brightest fruits. The principal component analysis revealed an evident separation between cultivars. Van cherries stood out for their sensory parameters and were classified as more acidic, bitter, and astringent, and presented a firmer texture. Contrarily, Burlat cherries were distinguished as being more flavourful, succulent, sweeter, and more uniform in terms of visual and colour parameters. The results of the sensory analysis suggested that perceived quality does not always depend on and/or recognize the quality parameters inherent to the physicochemical characteristics of each cultivar.

Biochemical juice attributes and color-related traits of muscadine grape genotypes have been investigated. For this study, 90 muscadine genotypes, including 21 standard cultivars, 60 breeding lines, and 9 Vitis x Muscadinia hybrids (VM), were evaluated. The biochemical properties of total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity, and TSS/Acid (T/A) ratio showed modest diversity among genotypes with a range of 10.3 °Brix, 2.1 mg tartaric acid/L, and 4.6, respectively. Nonetheless, the pH trait exhibited a tight range of 0.74 among the population with a minimum and maximum pH of 3.11 ± 0.12 and 3.85 ± 0.12. Color-related traits showed more deviation between individuals. Total anthocyanin content (TAC), luminosity index (L*), hue angle (h°), and chroma index (C*) displayed a range of 398 µg/g DW, 33.2, 352.1, and 24, respectively. The hierarchical clustering map classified the population into two large groups of colored and non-colored grapes based on L* and h°, suggesting the predominance of these two characters among the population. The colored berries genotypes clade was further divided into several sub-clades depending on C*, TAC, and TSS levels. The principal component analysis (PCA) separated the four-color characteristics into two groups with a negative correlation between them, L* and C* versus TAC and h°. Further, PCA suggested the positive influence of acidity in enhancing the different nutraceutical components. Despite the nature of anthocyanins as a member of phenolic compounds, a lack of significant correlation between TAC and nutraceutical-related traits was detected. The dissimilatory matrix analysis highlighted the muscadine individuals C11-2-2, E16-9-1, O21-13-1, and Noble as particular genotypes among the population due to enhanced color characteristics.

From 61 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolates, three had good cholesterol-lowering properties, with Limosilactobacillus fermentum KUB-D18 having the highest cholesterol assimilation (68.75%) (51 µg/109 CFU). In addition, Lactiplantibacillus pentosus HM04-25 and L. pentosus HM04-3 had the two highest levels of bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity (22.60 and 21.45 U/mL, respectively). These three strains could resist four antibiotics (aztreonam, vancomycin, teicoplanin, and nalidixic). However, fortunately, they contained no mobile antibiotic resistance genes. To evaluate the influence of probiotic strains in yoghurt production, L. fermentum KUB-D18, L. pentosus HM04-25, or L. pentosus HM04-3 were simultaneously cultured with commercial yoghurt starter (YF-L812) and incubated at 43 °C for 6 h. During yoghurt fermentation, the total bacteria in the yoghurt tended to increase from 7.39 to 8.90 log CFU/mL. The growth rates of two probiotic strains ( L. pentosus HM04-25 and L. pentosus HM04-3) were stable at 6.06 to 6.62 log CFU/mL. Only the rate for L. fermentum KUB-D18 increased (to 7.5 log CFU/mL). These three probiotics did not affect the physical characteristics of yoghurt. The total soluble solids, pH, and titratable acidity values of the probiotic yoghurts were similar to the control yoghurt at 30[Formula: see text]Brix, 4.91, and 0.90%, respectively. The firmness values of the probiotic yoghurts and the control were not significantly different (p > 0.05). Differentiation of the appearance of color, odor, flavor, and texture between the control yoghurt and the probiotic yoghurts was investigated using 56 volunteers and no significant differences were identified. Additionally, sensory evolution revealed that the acceptability of the probiotic yoghurts was higher than for the control (p ≤ 0.05). Therefore, the three probiotic strains with cholesterol-lowering properties had potential in future yoghurt production.

AbstractThe relative contribution of veterinary and human clinical treatments to the selection of antimicrobial resistance in zoonotic pathogens remains controversial. In this review, we consider bacterial pathogens that differ in host specificity and address their resistance profiles: pathogens that only occur in the human host, pathogens that are specific to particular food-producing animals and pathogens that occur in both host types. Compared with those pathogens restricted to a single animal host, pathogens found in both human and animal hosts appear to have higher incidences of resistance. However, the most urgent and severe resistance problems occur with pathogens exclusively infecting humans. Differences exist in the available genetic repertoire of a bacterial species and these are reflected in the observed resistance patterns; it is important to note that different bacterial species do not automatically result in similarly resistant populations when they undergo comparable selection in different host species. Thus, within a bacterial species, prevalence of resistance can differ between populations isolated from different hosts. For some species, fluctuations in dominant subpopulations, for instance particular serotypes, can be the most important factor determining resistance. The frequently expressed opinion that veterinary use of antimicrobials is at the heart of many resistance problems may be an oversimplification of the complex forces at play.

To predict the consequences of environmental change on the biodiversity of alpine wetlands, it is necessary to understand the relationship between soil properties and vegetation biodiversity. In this study, we investigated spatial patterns of aboveground vegetation biomass, cover, species diversity, and their relationships with soil properties in the alpine wetlands of the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China. Furthermore, the relative contribution of soil properties to vegetation biomass, cover, and species diversity were compared using principal component analysis and multiple regression analysis. Generally, the relationship between plant biomass, coverage, diversity, and soil nutrients was linear or unimodal. Soil pH, bulk density and organic carbon were also significantly correlated to plant diversity. The soil attributes differed in their relative contribution to changes in plant productivity and diversity. pH had the highest contribution to vegetation biomass and species richness, while total nitrogen was the highest contributor to vegetation cover and nitrogen–phosphorus ratio (N:P) was the highest contributor to diversity. Both vegetation productivity and diversity were closely related to soil properties, and soil pH and the N:P ratio play particularly important roles in wetland vegetation biomass, cover, and diversity.

A wide variety of dental products that are launched on the market becomes the correct selection of these materials a difficult task. Although the mechanical properties do not necessarily represent their actual clinical performance, they are used to guide the effects of changes in their composition or processing on these properties. Also, these tests might help somehow the clinician to choose once comparisons between former formulations and new ones, as well as, with the leading brand, are highlighted by manufactures. This paper presents a review of the most important laboratory tests. In this manner, the knowledge of these tests will provide a critical opinion related to the properties of different dental materials.
