Abstract This study evaluated the functional effects of two chemotypes of oregano essential oil (OEO): Lippia Origanoides (LO) and a comercial product Synergy Essence (SE). Broilers were randomly assigned to one of eight dietary treatments: 1) Basal diet (BD); 2) BD+ antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) (bacitracin 50g/ton); 3) BD+LO125 (125g/ton); 4) BD+LO250 (250g/ton); 5) BD+LO500 (500g/ton); 6) BD+SE125 (125g/ton); 7) BD+SE250 (250g/ton); 8) BD+SE500 (500g/ton). At the time of slaughter (42 d), five birds per treatment were slaughtered. A portion of the breast was minced and stored at -4 ºC for 3, 6, and 9 days. Lipid peroxidation was determined by measuring of malondialdehyde (MDA), data were analyzed as a completely randomized design with a factorial arrangement of treatments (8x4). Broilers fed SE250 had greater average daily gain (ADG) compared to broilers fed BD (P<0.05). Broilers fed LO500 had greater (P<0.05) organic matter digestibility than the ones fed BD. As days of storage increased, MDA concentration increased (P<0.05). Broilers fed SE500 had lower (P<0.05) MDA concentration than those fed BD and AGP. These data indicate that birds fed OEO grow faster than those fed a BD, similar to birds fed AGP. Some of these responses are possibly explained by increased digestibility and energy utilization. In addition, providing OEO from SE at 500g/ton resulted in lower lipid peroxidation in ground breast meat throughout the tested storage time.

Abstract Essential oils are plant-derived aromatic volatile oils, and they contain bioactive compounds that have been shown to improve poultry nutrition. In this study, we investigated the effects of oregano essential oil (OEO) on intestinal antioxidative capacity, immunity, and gut microbiota of young yellow-feathered chickens. A total of nine hundred and sixty 1-d-old female Qingyuan partridge chickens were randomly allocated to four treatment groups with six replicates of 40 birds each, and the feeding trial was lasted for 30 d. The controls were fed on a basal diet without in-feed antibiotics; the birds in the antibiotic group were fed the basal diet supplemented with 20 mg/kg virginiamycin; the remaining birds were fed the basal diet containing 150 or 300 mg/kg OEO, respectively. Dietary supplementation with 150 or 300 mg/kg OEO increased average daily feed intake (P = 0.057) and average daily gain (P &lt; 0.05). The activities of glutathione peroxidase and total antioxidative capacity in plasma, jejuna, and ileal mucosa were increased by OEO supplementation (P &lt; 0.05), with a trend of lower jejunal content of malonaldehyde (P = 0.062). Moreover, dietary OEO increased the content of secretory immunoglobulin A (P = 0.078) and the relative expression of Claudin 1, Mucin 2, and Avain beta-defensin 1 in ileum (P &lt; 0.05). Sequencing data of 16S rRNA indicated that dietary OEO increased the relative abundance of Firmicutes phylum, and Clostridium and Lactobacillus genera, and decreasing that of Romboutsia. Functional analyses indicated that microbial amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, replication, and repair systems were higher in OEO groups than those of controls and antibiotic treatment. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with OEO enhanced growth performance, alleviated local oxidative stress in intestine, improved production of natural antibodies, and favorably modulated intestinal microbiota composition.

This study investigated whether Glutamine (Gln) could be used as an additive to improve antioxidant capacity in the breast muscle of heat-stressed broilers. Two hundred and forty 22-day-old Arbor Acres broilers in the G1, G2, G3, and G4 groups (n = 60 each) were housed in a cyclic hot environment and fed the basal diet with 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% Gln, respectively. Compared with the G1 group, dietary 1.5% Gln increased (p < 0.05) pH and b* values, but decreased (p < 0.05) L* cooking loss, drip loss, and water loss rate in breast meat of heat-stressed broilers. Malondialdehyde levels in the breast muscle were lower (p < 0.05) in 1.0% and 1.5% Gln groups than that of the heat-stress group. Compared with the G1 group, dietary 1.5% Gln increased (p < 0.05) catalase (CAT), glutathione, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px,) and total antioxidant capacity in the breast muscle of heat-stressed broilers. Furthermore, the CAT, GSH-Px, HSP70 mRNA expression levels, and HSP70 protein expression levels were increased (p < 0.05) in the G3 and G4 groups compared with the G1 group. In sum, Gln alleviated antioxidant capacity and lipid peroxidation in the breast muscle of heat-stressed broilers through antioxidant genes and HSP70 pathways.

Context Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element and plays pivotal roles in poultry nutrition. Aims The present study was designed to compare the impact of dietary supplementation of different sources of Se on growth performance, Se concentration of breast meat, and immune response of broiler chickens. Methods In total, 300 1-day-old as hatched broilers were randomly allocated to six dietary treatments, with five replicates of 10 birds per each. The experimental diets were as follows: (1) corn–soybean meal-based diet supplemented with 0.30 mg/kg of sodium selenite, (2) basal diet supplemented with 0.30 mg/kg of Se-enriched yeast, and (3–6) basal diet supplemented with 0.15, 0.30, 0.90 and 1.50 mg/kg of nano-Se respectively. Humoral immunity was assessed by antibody titer against a 5% sheep red blood-cell suspension and cellular immunity was measured by administration of phytohaemagglutinin-p at 38 days. Key results Results indicated that during the periods from 1 to 10 days, from 11 to 24 days, from 25 to 42 days and from 1 to 42 days, average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and feed conversion ratio did not differ among the treatments (P &gt; 0.05). Assessment of orthogonal contrasts at the whole phase of feeding showed that the average daily gain in the broilers fed organic Se was significantly (P &lt; 0.05) higher than that in those fed inorganic Se, as well as nano-Se in comparison to organic Se; such effects were not observed in earlier feeding stages. Se supplementation significantly increased the Se concentration of breast muscle (P &lt; 0.0001). The birds that received 1.50 mg/kg of diet nano-Se showed higher (P &lt; 0.05) total immunoglobulin and IgG titers in primary and secondary immune responses against sheep erythrocytes respectively. Toe web swelling after 24 h and 48 h of receiving phytohaemagglutinin-p was not affected by Se supplementation (P &gt; 0.05). Conclusions In conclusion, the addition of nano-Se gave better results than did inorganic (sodium selenite) and organic (yeast selenium) forms of Se in performance traits, breast meat Se concentration and antibody response of broilers. Implications Novel elemental nanometer particulates, including nano-Se, exhibit new characteristics and a different mode of actions in comparison with organic and inorganic forms of Se sources in poultry diets. Inclusion of the nano form of Se in broiler diets and study of productive performance, immunity responses and meat quality leads to improve balanced broiler diets formulation in view of Se.

Introduction: Various types of feed additives have been evaluated under commercial conditions and in experimental trials with the aim to achieve improvements on growth performance and the best economic return. Herbs, including Sesame indicum leaves, spices and various plant extracts/essential oils can be used as alternatives to replace antibiotic growth promoters as they are rich in phytochemicals (active compounds) that can be used to stimulate growth and health of the animals. The uses of all these herbs should be studied in relation to the blood and serum indices of the animals in order to determine their harmful level of consuming them by the animals. Therefore, the aim of the study is to determine the effect of different dietary inclusion levels of Sesame indicum leaves on haematology and serum parameters of broiler chickens at both starter and finisher phases. Methods: A total of one hundred and fifty 1-day old, unsexed (Marshal) broiler chicks were randomly divided into five experimental groups at rate of 30 birds per group. Each group was further subdivided into three replicates at the rate of ten chicks per replicate in a Complete Randomized Design. A maize-soybean basal diet served as control while the Sesame indicum leaves was added to the basal diets at level (0g, 10g, 20g, 30g and 40g/kg) resulting in five formulae, respectively. At the end of the 4th and 8th weeks respectively, six birds were randomly selected from each of the replicate and blood samples were collected from the jugular vein of birds for haematology and serum. Results: The results indicated that all the haematology and serum parameters were significantly (p < 0.05) affected by the different inclusion levels of S. indicum leaves but the value obtained were within the recommended range while birds fed with the diet containing 40g/kg of S. indicum leaves had the highest values. Conclusion: Inclusion of S. indicum leaves in the diets appear not to have detrimental effect on the haematology and serum parameters of the experimental birds. The study recommended that 40g/kg inclusion level be adopted as it improved growth performance and general well-being of broiler chickens.

The objective of the experiment was to compare effects of dietary supplementation of organic acids (ProHacid Advance, PRO) and antibiotics on growth performance, diarrhea incidence, frequency of antibiotic treatment, and E. coli shedding in weaned pigs. A total of 224 crossbred weaned pigs [(Yorkshire x Landrace) x Duroc; 29 days old)] were allotted to 1 of 4 treatments with 7 replicate pens of 8 pigs each according to sex, litter origin and weight in an RCBD. The 4 dietary treatments included (1) basal diet + 50 mg/kg neomycin and 10 mg/kg enramycin (positive control, PC), (2) basal diet without antibiotics (negative control, NC), (3) As 2 + 0.25% PRO, and (4) As 2 + 0.5% PRO. Over a 4-week study, the results showed that there were no differences in the average daily gain and average daily feed intake of pigs among the 4 treatments (P = 0.328). However, pigs fed the PC diet (1.642) and 0.25% PRO-supplemented diet (1.641) had a lower feed to gain ratio (P < 0.05) than those fed the NC diet (1.808). The diarrhea incidence of pigs fed the 0.25% PRO-supplemented diet (7.36%) was lower (P < 0.01) than that of pigs fed the PC diet (11.61%), NC diet (16.70%), and 0.5% PRO-supplemented diet (10.08%). The frequency of antibiotic treatment of pigs consuming the 0.25% PRO-supplemented diet (4.67%) was lower (P < 0.01) than that of pigs consuming the PC diet (7.33%), NC diet (9.53%) and 0.5% PRO-supplemented diet (7.65%). No differences were found in the number of fecal E. coli among the 4 treatments. In brief, 0.25% PRO added to a nursery pig diet would be considered a potential alternative to the use of antibiotics in feed, but further research on this aspect is needed

A study was conducted at the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Sciences (IAAS), Rampur, Chitwan from 29 August to 17 October, 2007 to compare the effects of antibiotic (chlortetracycline) and probiotic (Lactobacillus acidophilus) with three herbal growth promoters, Amala (Emblica officinalis),(EO), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), (OC) and Aswogandha (Withania somnifera),(WS) on growth performance, feed consumption, feed conversion efficiency, carcass characteristics, and economics of broiler production. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with day-old broiler chick (192) randomly assigned to eight groups containing 8 chick in each and replicated three times. The control group received the maize-soybean based basal diet. In the treatment groups, the basal diet was supplemented with one of the following: antibiotic, probiotics, Tulsi, Amala, and Aswogandha and also in combination of herbs, forming eight treatments respectively. Results showed significantly better production in herbs. Significantly higher digestibility of all the nutrients (P<0.05) was observed in Amala+Tulsi+Aswogandha (T8) supplemented group. Highest body weight (1.440kg) was recorded in birds fed diet supplemented with Amala and Tulsi, and the lowest body weight (1.317kg) was seen in antibiotics (T2) fed birds. The highest income over expenditure (Rs.26.36) was recorded in birds fed diet supplemented with Tulsi (T6), although the difference was not significant among the treatments. Looking at the benefit cost ratio, highest B/C ratio was found in birds supplied with Tulsi (1.19) supplemented diet and minimum (1.12) was recorded in Amala supplied diet. Hence, this experiment showed that herbs as growth promoters can replace antibiotics in the diet of broiler chicken.
