This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the administration of sodium humate (NaH) on the growth performance, diarrhea incidence, and fecal microflora of pre-weaned Holstein calves. In a 53-day experiment, forty healthy newborn female calves were randomly allocated to the following four treatment groups: (1) control (basal diet); (2) 1-gram NaH (basal diet extra orally supplemented with 1 g of NaH dissolved in 100 mL of milk or milk replacer daily); (3) 3-gram NaH (basal diet extra orally supplemented with 3 g of NaH dissolved in 100 mL of milk or milk replacer daily); and (4) 5-gram NaH (basal diet extra orally supplemented with 5 g of NaH dissolved in 100 mL of milk or milk replacer daily). NaH was mixed with milk (d 2–20) or milk replacer (d 21–53). Calves in the 5-gram NaH group had a higher ADG during d 1 to 21 and d 21 to 53 than the other groups did (p < 0.05). Fecal scores and diarrheal incidence were significantly lower in the 3-gram and 5-gram NaH groups than the 1-gram NaH and control groups during d 1 to 20 (p < 0.05). The serum IgA, IgG and IL-4 concentrations, and T-SOD and T-AOC activities were higher, and the serum IL-6, TNF-α, D-lactic acid, and MDA concentrations were lower in the 5-gram NaH group than the control group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, NaH supplementation increased the abundances of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus but decreased the abundance of Escherichia coli in feces (p < 0.05). These encouraging findings indicated that supplementation with 5 g of NaH effectively improved the immune status, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal beneficial bacteria, and further improved the growth performance and reduced the diarrhea incidence of the pre-weaned dairy calves.

Climate change has resulted in rising global average temperatures and an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, which already has and will yield serious public health consequences, including the risk of diarrheal diseases. Sufficient evidence in the literature has highlighted the association between different meteorological variables and diarrhea incidence. Both low and high temperatures can increase the incidence of diarrheal disease, and heavy rainfall has also been associated with increased diarrhea cases. Extreme precipitation events and floods are often followed by diarrhea outbreaks. Research has also concluded that drought can concentrate pathogens in water sources, which makes it possible for diarrhea pathogens to distribute broadly when the first heavy rain happens. Substantial evidence underscores the important role social, behavioral, and environmental factors may have for the climate-diarrhea relationship. Meteorological factors may further influence the social vulnerability of populations to diarrhea through a variety of social and behavioral factors. Future research should focus on social factors, population vulnerability, and further understanding of how climate change affects diarrhea to contribute to the development of targeted adaptation strategies.

This study evaluated the effects of dietary gallic acid (GA) on growth performance, diarrhea incidence and plasma antioxidant status of weaned piglets regardless of whether weaning weight was high or low. A total of 120 weaned piglets were randomly allocated to four treatments in a 42-day experiment with a 2 × 2 factorial treatment arrangement comparing different weaning weights (high weight (HW) or low weight (LW), 8.49 ± 0.18 kg vs. 5.45 ± 0.13 kg) and dietary treatment (without supplementation (CT) or with supplementation of 400 mg/kg of GA). The results showed that HW piglets exhibited better growth performance and plasma antioxidant capacity. Piglets supplemented with GA had higher body weight (BW) on day 42 and average daily gain (ADG) from day 0 to 42 compared to the control piglets, which is mainly attributed to the specific improvement on BW and ADG of LW piglets by the supplementation of GA. The decreased values of diarrhea incidence were seen in piglets fed GA, more particularly in LW piglets. In addition, dietary GA numerically reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) content in plasma of LW piglets. In conclusion, our study suggests that dietary GA may especially improve the growth and health in LW weaned piglets.

This study assessed the feasibility of using a vegetable extract, MGM-P (quebracho tannin product), as an alternative to antibiotics for weaned piglets; it investigated MGM-P effects on growth performance, diarrhea, and overall health in early-weaned piglets. In total, 24 piglets were allocated to three treatment groups fed basal diets supplemented with 0, 0.2%, or 0.3% MGM-P for 20 days. The addition of 0.3% MGM-P to the diet of early-weaned piglets improved diarrhea incidence, hematological parameters, and intestinal mucosa structure. Furthermore, the addition of 0.2% or 0.3% MGM-P to the diet of early-weaned piglets did not affect their overall health. Importantly, MGM-P had no effects on average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), or feed conversion ratio (FCR). Gut morphology analysis showed that treatment with 0.3% MGM-P enhanced the jejunal villus height (p < 0.05) while reducing the ileal crypt depth (p < 0.05) and colon mucosal thickness (p < 0.05). Collectively, the findings suggested that the use of MGM-P as an alternative to dietary antibiotics could improve diarrhea incidence in early-weaned piglets without negative effects on growth performance or overall health.

One hundred twenty weaned piglets (9.34 ± 0.74 kg) were used in a four-week experiment to investigate the effects of replacing medical ZnO with a different ratio of inorganic and organic zinc (IZ:OZ) or a low-crude-protein diet (LP) with mixed feed additives (MFAs) in the weaned piglets’ diet. The dietary treatments included a control (CON), T1 (T1; ZnO 1000 mg/kg), T2 (IZ:OZ 850:150), T3 (IZ:OZ 700:300), T4 (IZ:OZ, 500:500), and T5 (LP with MFAs (0.1% essential oils + 0.08% protease + 0.02% xylanase)). The growth performance was decreased (p < 0.05) in the CON treatment compared with the T4 treatment. The diarrhea incidence was decreased (p < 0.05) in the T4 and the T5 treatment compared with the CON and the T1 treatments. The apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients were increased (p < 0.05) in the T4 and T5 treatments compared with the CON, T1, and T2 treatments. The T4 treatment had a higher (p < 0.05) ATTD of zinc than the T1, T2, and T3 treatments. The fecal microflora was improved (p < 0.05) in the T5 treatment compared with the CON and T3 treatments. In conclusion, IZ:OZ 500:500 could improve growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and zinc utilization while reducing diarrhea incidence in weaned piglets. Moreover, LP with MFA could replace medical ZnO.

Introduction: Diarrhea incidence in children under five increases by 11% in Indonesia during 2013 - 2018 that could be driven by poor environmental sanitation. This study examined the relationship between environmental sanitation with diarrhea incidence in children under five. Methods: This study was an observational study with a cross-sectional design and used a total sampling technique of 81 underfive children. Primary data were collected by conducting interviews with parents using a structured questionnaire guideline and observation, including the source of drinking water, availability of healthy latrine, floor condition, and lighting. A Chi-square test (α = 0.05) was conducted to analyse the relationship between variables. Results and Discussion: There was a significant correlation between household sanitation and diarrhea incidence in under-five children (p = 0.040; PR = 1.202 [95% CI 0.987 – 1.463]). Conclusion: Poor household sanitation can be a driving factor in diarrhea incidence in under-five children, where households categorised as good sanitation have 1.2 times lower risk than poor sanitation

Abstract An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding low crude protein (CP) diets and supplying 110% of the first 5 limiting AA on performance and diarrhea incidence in weaned pigs. One of 3 treatments were randomly assigned to 81 piglets (BW: 8.2 ± 1.2 kg; 9 pens/treatment; 3 pigs/pen) during 2 phases (3 wk each): a high CP (HP; 21 and 18%), a low CP (LP; 18 and 15%), or a low CP at 110% Lys, Met, Trp, Thr, Val requirements (LPAA; 18 and 15%) diet for phase 1 and 2, respectively. Pigs had ad libitum access to feed and water. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED of SAS. During phase 1, pigs fed HP had the greatest ADG (P &lt; 0.05), but ADFI and G:F were not different among treatments. In phase 2, no effect of treatments was observed on growth performance. Overall, pigs fed LPAA had the lowest (P &lt; 0.05) ADG and G:F, and feeding LP decreased (P &lt; 0.05) G:F. The ADFI was not affected by the treatments. Only during wk 3, pigs fed LPAA increased (P &lt; 0.05) and LP tended to increase (P &lt; 0.10) frequency of diarrhea compared to HP. On d 21, no treatment effect was observed for ileal villi height, but LPAA reduced (P &lt; 0.05) and LP tended to reduce (P &lt; 0.10) crypt depth compared to HP. Diet analysis revealed that LP was deficient in Ile and non-essential AA (NEAA), and LPAA contained inadequate levels of Ile, Leu, His and NEAA, which explains why reduced pig performance was achieved with these 2 diets. In conclusion, low CP diets, even with additional supplementation of the first 5 limiting AA, if deficient in the next limiting AA, results in negative effects on performance and diarrhea incidence.

BackgroundAt present, chemotherapy is still the primary treatment for advanced biliary tract carcinoma, but it is challenging to balance the efficacy and side effects. Network meta-analysis (NMA) is a better way to identify the protocol, and the advantage is that it can be combined with direct and indirect evidence to judge the best treatment regimens. Therefore, we conducted NMA on the searched randomized controlled trials (RCTs).MethodsNMA was conducted regarding the searched RCTs by comparing progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), objective remission rates (ORRs), and adverse events (AEs) of different chemotherapy protocols.ResultsWe screened 24 studies that met the inclusion criteria for further analysis. Compared with other regimens, the best supportive care (BSC) or FUFA protocol has a worse OS. Folfox4, GEMOX+erlotinib, and C+GEMOX can improve patients’ PFS compared with BSC. Patients receiving GP+cediranib protocol have higher ORRs. There was reduced neutropenia grade ≥3 when adopting GP+cediranib, GS, C+GEMOX, RAM+GP, and MER+GP than when using FUFA protocol. The probability of vomiting of XELOX is lower than that of GEM+XELOX. There is a lower diarrhea incidence of XELOX than that of GEMOX+erlotinib. The results of cluster grade analysis illustrated that GEMOX+erlotinib owned a higher ORR and a higher surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA) of neutropenia and vomiting but also had a lower SUCRA of diarrhea and fatigue. Meanwhile, both GEMOX and C+GEMOX have a better ORR and a higher AE SUCRA.ConclusionThe NMA demonstrated that chemotherapy combined with targeted therapy has better efficacy and lower incidence of AEs than chemotherapy alone.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a pandemic that causes various types of symptoms. Diarrhea is a gastrointestinal symptom that is hypothesized to be associated with patient morbidity and mortality. Research on the relationship between diarrhea and the incidence of transaminitis, severity and mortality has never been carried out, so further research is neededMethod: Descriptive-analytic research design with a case-control study approach. Sampling using consecutive sampling on patients in the inpatient installation of dr. Saiful Anwar, Malang. Research data on diarrhea incidence, transaminitis, severity, and mortality were obtained from secondary data on COVID-19 patients. Data were analyzed using chi-square with a significance level p 0.05Results: The incidence of diarrhea in COVID-19 patients with transaminitis was 45.8% and significantly associated (p = 0.025). Diarrhea in COVID-19 patients was associated with severity (p = 0.046) and patient mortality (p = 0.028).Conclusion: There is a relationship between the incidence of diarrhea in COVID-19 patients with trasnsaminitis, severity and mortality
