With the objective to evaluate the behavior of paracoccidioidomycosis in the last three decades, clinical and epidemiological data of 595 patients admitted to clinical services of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul from 1980 to 2009 were investigated. Gender, age distribution, clinical form, comorbidity with tuberculosis or AIDS, and mortality were compared by decades of clinical admission. It was shown that during the three decades there was a decrease in women percentage, and the same manner occurred a reduction in participants in the age group of 20 to 39 years. Moreover, the acute/subacute forms have been diminished in the period. These fluctuations are closely related and can be simultaneously analyzed. Increased AIDS co-infection prevalence from the first to the second decade was also revealed, coinciding with the appearance of the retroviral epidemic and stabilizing during the third decade. No change in the tuberculosis co-infection rate was observed (overall = 6.9%). It reinforces the importance of this co-morbidity. The overall mortality rate remained steady at 6.7%, not varying significantly from one decade to another. The persistent mortality rate calls attention to the importance of this neglected disease.

In 2001, Brazil launched the National Program for Control and Eradication of Animal Brucellosis and Tuberculosis (PNCEBT). After 15 years, After 15 years, it can be checked that there was mistakes and successes in driving the program, but it is undeniable that in this period, a series of structuring actions was initiated. In addition, a large volume of high-quality epidemiological data were produced, which will allow the country to move forward more rationally and safely in combating these two diseases. Today, Brazil have a sufficient contingent of veterinarians to develop the accreditation of farms and vaccination against brucellosis in all States; all batches of vaccines against brucellosis produced by private laboratories are controlled by an official laboratory; the brucellosis vaccination program is well established in most States and it has produced a decrease in prevalence in Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondônia and Minas Gerais; there are two ongoing eradication experiences: of brucellosis in Santa Catarina and of tuberculosis in Mato Grosso; nowadays there is a culture to combat brucellosis and tuberculosis in the Brazilian Official Veterinary Services. The epidemiological situation of bovine brucellosis and tuberculosis is well known in the major part of the country. However, progress has been limited by the difficulty in engaging the beef and dairy productive chains as true partners in the process.

Background: A COVID-19 cluster named as Rengas Cluster was declared on 6th November 2020 after nine students from a boarding school in Padang Rengas, Perak diagnosed as positive COVID-19. Risk assessment was conducted and Targeted Enhanced Movement Control Order (TEMCO) was enforced at the school to contain the viral transmission. An investigation was carried out to analyze epidemiological data, clinical manifestations among cases and effect of TEMCO on this cluster. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from 2nd August 2021 until 3rd September 2021 using data that obtained from Kuala Kangsar District Health Office Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) Surveillance System through e-COVID notification system. The variables used in this current study include socio-demographic and clinical characteristics that include age group, gender, occupation, co-morbidities, symptoms and signs. Results: There were 132 cases out of 324 exposed populations whereby most cases were students (87.9%) and aged between 11 and 20 years old (84.8%). More than half of cases were female (57.6%) with only one case had existing co-morbidity. Majority of cases were asymptomatic (64.4%). Those symptomatic mainly presented with cough (66%) and the strongest significant positive correlation were observed between anosmia and ageusia (r = 0.807, n = 47, p < 0.001). There was no significant association between age group and development of symptoms [χ2 (6, N = 132) = 6.014, p > 0.05]. An abrupt decline in number of cases was observed following TEMCO enforcement. Conclusion: COVID-19 cases in Rengas Cluster were mostly among young students, asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic. This cluster was timely and effectively controlled by TEMCO enforcement which contributed towards early diagnosis, isolation and treatment for more effective control and preventive measures.

One hundred seventy-four consecutive cases of newborn infants who required orotracheal intubation for longer than three days were studied retrospectively. The duration of intubation varied from 3 to 211 days with an overall mortality rate of 22.9 %. There was one complication directly related to orotracheal intubation. One tracheotomy was performed. Orotracheal intubation is felt to be superior to nasal tracheal intubation and tracheotomy in managing infants in this age group who require prolonged assisted ventilation.

Aortic sclerosis (ASc) is defined as thickening or calcification of the aortic valve without significant obstruction of blood flow. Aortic sclerosis is diagnosed when in echocardiography, thickening and calcification of one or more cusps of a tricuspid aortic valve is manifested, whereas in aortic stenosis, cusp separation is restricted and the velocity through the aortic valve is > 2.5 m/s. Its prevalence increases with age. Aortic valve stenosis is associated with systemic endothelial dysfunction, and it carries a 50% increase in risk of cardiac death or myocardial infarction. As aortic sclerosis has proved to be more and more relevant in recent days, it has been important to identify epidemiological data and demographic information of aortic sclerosis in Bangladeshi population. This study tried to determine age distribution of aortic sclerosis in Bangladehsi population. Median age of aortic sclerosis patients was 65 years (mean 67 ± 12 years), most of the patients (17.2%) were in 56-60 years of age group. The same statement holds correct for females, where highest number of patients (7.7% of total patients) were in the same age group. For the males, the highest number of patients (11% of total patients) were in 61-65 years of age group. The minimum age was 45 years for both males and females. Although the minimum age is same for both sex, females are affected a bit earlier than males, and statistically significant difference was found between mean ages of two sexes. Most of the aortic sclerotic patients are below the usually used age cut off of 65 years. There is significant difference between mean age of presentation of aortic sclerosis between males and females. Further study should be undertaken to understand these effects more clearly.Bangladesh Heart Journal 2017; 32(1) : 50-54

Abstract Background Breast cancer is the fifth most common cause of death from cancer in women worldwide. In Brazil, mortality rates are increasing. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze breast cancer mortality between 2000 and 2018 in Mato Grosso, a Brazilian state in Legal Amazon. Methods Ecological study analyzing temporal trends. Data were extracted from the Mortality Information System. The selected variables were: sex (female), cause of death (C-50, in the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases - ICD 10), age (less than 50 years-old, equal or older than 50 years-old) and year of death (2000-2018). Resident population data were obtained from the Ministry of Health's database (DATASUS) for calculation of breast cancer annual mortality rates. Temporal trends were estimated using linear regression. All analyses were done in the STATA 14.0. Results Between 2000 and 2018, 2,276 deaths from breast cancer were registered in women. Of these, 756 (33.2%) in the youngest age group and 1,520 (66.8%) in the oldest age group. A statistically significant increase in breast cancer mortality was found for both age groups (p < 0.001). In the annual mortality rates analysis, women in the youngest age group had the lowest rate in 2003 (1.98 deaths/100,000 women) and the highest rate in 2018 (7.88 deaths/100,000 women). The oldest age group had the lowest mortality rate in 2000 (21.48 death/100,000 women) and the highest rate in 2017 (47.09 deaths/100,000). The mean mortality rate was 5.69 for the youngest age group and 33.19 for the oldest age group. The annual percentage of change was 33.31 for the youngest group and 62.49 for the oldest group. Conclusions There is a statistically significant increase in female breast cancer mortality rate in Mato Grosso, one of the Brazilian states in Legal Amazon. It is imperative to invest in breast cancer screening to enable the reduction of the mortality rate of the disease. Key messages Our study presents information of breast cancer in a state from Legal Amazon that has increased death rates by the years 2000 to 2018. Besides breast cancer is relevant in Brazil, this is the first analysis from this specific data, potential to support improvement in disease control.

Introduction: Immature forms of the antlion Myrmeleon brasiliensis (Neuroptera, Myrmeleontidae) build traps in dry sandy soil to capture prey. Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate how the waterlogging of the soil due to rain affects the trap rebuilding and relocation behavior of M. brasiliensis of different sizes. Methods: The study was conducted between July and December 2019. Larvae M. brasiliensis were observed and collected from a forest reserve in the municipality of Aquidauana in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Results: In the natural environment, most larvae rebuilt their traps in the same location seven days after the simulation of rain, with a smaller diameter than that observed prior to the simulation of rain. In the laboratory, the movements of M. brasiliensis larvae and rebuilding of the traps after the waterlogging of the soil was affected by body size. Larger larvae moved more and were more likely to rebuild their traps. Conclusions: The saturation of the soil affects the foraging of M. brasiliensis larvae, which are impeded from rebuilding their traps for a period. In situations of long periods of saturated soil, the mortality rate of the larvae is high and rebuilding of the traps occurs after the soil dries out, but with a smaller trap size. These data suggest that changes in the rainfall pattern can affect the population structure of M. brasiliensis larvae, with the selection of larger individuals in situations of more severe rains. In this process, the smaller larvae are more affected, as their foraging is impeded.

✓ The authors report a series of 144 children with traumatic extradural hematomas operated on at the Lille Department of Neurosurgery between 1969 and 1982. The patients are divided into different groups according to age, and clinical findings were recorded for each age group. The overall mortality rate was 9%. The authors demonstrate that prognosis is related to age, neurological status at time of surgery, and duration of postoperative coma.

In 1989, oj2350 patients hospitalized in the paediatric ward of Dr. Pirngadi Hospital, Medan, 829 (35.3%) were gastroenteritis cases, with male more than female. Most of the patients with gastroenteritis were found in the age group of under 1 years (521 cases = 62.8%). The highest prevalence was found in january, February and March. Mild, moderate and severe dehydration were encountered in 2. 7%, 83.1% and 14.2% cases respectively. Eighty for (10.1%) cases had been treated with oralit before admission. Only 49. 1% of those patients with gastroenteritis under two years of age were breastfed. The patients of under five year old were 791 (95. 4%) cases; 259 (32. 7%) cases were malnourished. The overall mortality rate of these patients with gastroenteritis was 5.9% ( 49 cases). The age specific mortality rate was highest in the age group of 6- 12 months. Usually patients died with gastroenteritis had complications or associated diseases.

SUMMARYEpidemiological features of an outbreak of group B:15:P1.16 meningococcal disease (MD) in Frederiksborg country, Denmark, 1987–9, were investigated. The study comprised 149 cases notified during the outbreak and the two preceding years; 115 were confirmed by the isolation of Neisseria meningitidis. In 1989 the incidence had increased to 14·1 per 100 000 population. Among group B strains, B:15:P1.16 accounted for 80% (77/97). The overall mortality rate was 10% (15/149). Regarding cases due to group B:15:P1.16 strains a significant time-space clustering, which exclusively occurred within the 10–19 years age group, was demonstrated. The link between cases within clusters was indirect or unknown, except for ten patients with contact to one particular school. The prophylactic measures used included administration of rifampicin to household contacts. During the outbreak the proportion of secondary cases was high (6–15%). All secondary cases occurred outside the household indicating that the household had been protected.
