This research aims at finding out students’ personal initiative towards their achievement in speaking English. This research was conducted in an English department at a university in North Sulawesi Indonesia. The data were obtained from the sixth semester students in English Language and Literature study program of academic year 2015/2016 consisting of 21 students. In obtaining the data about students’ personal initiative, a questionnaire was distributed, and for the speaking performance, the data were obtained from students’ scores in Public Speaking subject. To find out the relation between these two variables, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient formula was used. The result of this research shows that there is a correlation between students’ personal initiative towards their speaking performance with the value of  = (0.52) categorized as a moderate correlation. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that personal initiative of students was important to be considered as one of several determination factors for students’ achievement in English speaking skill. It is suggested that students encourage themselves for taking initiative to speak, and for the teacher to give the students correction and suggestion to help them develop themselves.

Speaking skill becomes one of the most fundamental skills in this era; however English learners need to develop their capability to show their language skill through speaking practice. This research aims to investigate students speaking fluency level toward speaking practice. The qualitative descriptive method is used to describe data analysis. The sample of this research is single sample, English language program students at semester 5.  The video record towards speaking practice and professional feedback are became the data collection technique. The video records duration is about 10 minutes and during that presentation, researcher tried to analysis based on the vocabulary used, voice, and speech fluency. The result of the research showed that student’s speaking fluency level is still low, and it needed to treat and drill more, could be through watching a YouTube or practice among English learners.

This research aims to know speaking teaching methods used at Kampung Inggris Pontianak for elementary school students and tutor obstacles during teaching activity. The method applied in this research was qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. The data were collected from interview and observation with the owner of Kampung Inggris Pontianak, West Kalimantan. It was found that English speaking skill to elementary school students was separated into four levels; basic, intermediate 1, intermediate 2, and advanced. There are five methods applied by Kampung Inggris Pontianak to improve students English speaking skill. Flashcards, watching movies, listening, games, and singing. There were two kinds of obstacles that tutors face during the class. First, most of the tutors’ backgrounds were non-educational. So, they found it hard, sometimes, to control their elementary students who are very energetic. They might have English language competence. However, it is not adequate as their only competence to teach students compared to tutors with English educational background. Therefore, Kampung Inggris Pontianak holds micro-teaching practices to see tutor candidate performances before coming into class. Second, new students made many false answers on the placement test just to make them get into a lower level class than they are supposed to be. The researcher hopes this research will give knowledge to the reader of how tutors in Kampung Inggris Pontianak teaches speaking skills to their students.

A good start in researching on language teaching and learning issues is to first analyse target learners’ actual performance and their needs. This mixed-methods 2-cycle study is aimed to analyse medical-college students’ language needs through two instruments—a self-rated report and a guided focus group. Out of the main four language skills (speaking, reading, listening, and writing), Cycle 1 aimed at exploring the most trouble-provoking skill for EMP students through a 7-item rating report with a sample of 45 participants. Based on the results of Cycle 1 which labelled speaking as the most problematic language skill for the target learners, Cycle 2 proceeded with 9 interviewees to narrow the study focus on the factors contributing to the inefficiency of speaking skills among EMP learners, discussing solutions from the learners’ perspectives. Pedagogically, this research helps practitioners innovate and integrate new techniques in language teaching and learning to overcome the issue of students’ speaking performance that has been deemed below expectations.

Applying technology in learning English language is indispensable in the period of industry 4.0 and global integration. However, what technological techniques should be applied in teaching and learning process is the most serious concern. Evidence shows that different technological applications may lead to various learning outcomes, detrimental effects, even spoiling learning interest or motivations. Therefore, this paper is aimed not only to explore the multiple dimensions of recoding video clips in group (RVCIG) in learning English speaking skill but also illustrate how this activity (RVCIG) influences on learners’ English speaking  improvement. Apparently, these explorations and illustrations help to consider whether this RVCIG is widely used in teaching English speaking process or not. To do that, a quantitative research method with the tool of semi - structure interview is used to collect various information, mixed feedbacks or motivations from 2 groups of students fully participating in recording three video clips in group within course. Additionally, a questionnaire survey is also sent to 33 English learners for exploring both commendable and detrimental influences of this RVCIG on English speaking development. The findings indicate that RVCIG makes learners have various opposite experiences in language competence, confident expression, and communication, as well as cope with unavoidable challenges of time consuming, technological problems, and group member’ disagreements. Whatever advantages or disadvantages of this RVCIG activity has, learners also express their interest and expectation of recording video clips in group for purposes of English speaking improvement, mutual engagement, collaborative learning and building friendship.

The background of the study was the phenomenon of the first semester students of class A English Language Education Department at STAIN Mandailing Natal. Most of them were seldom using English in everyday activity because they did not have enough motivation, adequate vocabulary, and self-confidence. To activate their speaking skill ability, it was used their speaking video recording. By this, they did not only speak, but also involved in correcting, commenting and evaluating their performance in speaking skill. It was productive solution to overcome their problem. The respondents of this study were 15 first semester students Class A English language Education department in STAIN Mandailing Natal. This study was categorized into Class Action Research (CAR). The method of data collection used in this study was form test of speaking video recording which was measuring seven aspects of speaking skill, they were (1) pronunciation, (2) fluency, (3) word choice, (4) structure, (5) self-confidence, (6) teamwork and (7) creativity. The result of cycle 1 showed that the students’ average score in speaking skill was 7.2. In the cycle 2, the students achieved far better average score namely 8.4. It means there was a progress on students’ speaking skill achievement after learning through speaking video recording. The conclusion was the use of speaking video recording was able to improve the students’ speaking ability because they were brave, motivated and interested to express English as the way they wanted it.

In this global era, everything changes into technology-based likewise teaching method. In teaching, technology can be used as teaching variation and this study was aimed to develop technology-based English language learning media for sixth grade elementary students by using Powtoon animation video. This study’s objectives was for developing the prototype product. This study used Design and Development (D&D) method by three steps based on ADDIE model. The stages are analysis, design, develop. Since the steps used were only three, then the product was only in the form of prototype product. In order to develop the prototype product, need analysis, designing the product based on the analysis, and then development were done. The product was quantitatively analyzed by using expert judgment. The result of the experts judgment showed that the prototype product was categorized as an excellent media after some revisions and suggestions from material and IT expert.

The global spread of English has brought a significant shift in English language teaching from methodology to post methodology era, structural to communicative approach and theory-based conception of teaching to evidence-based practice of teaching harmonizing with the context of learning. The advent of postmethod pedagogy in the twenty first century had widely acknowledged the contribution of individual teachers in English language teaching and learning field. Consequently, incorporation of dialogues and the field of English language teaching have turned to be complex creating numerous kaleidoscopic thoughts and research in the arena of English language teaching. In this diverse and convoluted contexts, we are pleased to bring the first volume of Journal of NELTA Gandaki (JoNG) with the aim of accommodating such diversities and providing support and resources to all the language practitioners for boosting up their professionalism by promoting the arenas of English language teaching in the local context. This issue consists of eleven articles from various fields of applied linguistics, English language teaching, testing, researching and so forth. The first one sheds light on the pedagogical dimension of literature in ESL/EFL classroom and concludes with proposing the pedagogical approaches and procedures of exploring literary texts to maximize learning opportunities for students. The second examines the role of role play techniques in teaching speaking skill to the students of class 10. This article reports positive role of role play in fostering speaking skill of the students. Similarly, the third article has concluded that the reflection of critical events gave them some kind of relief in teaching practice and the events taught them a number of strategies. Likewise, the following article concludes that the book follows the gradual shift from foreign language literature to learners' local culture with communicative skills of interaction and provides learners an opportunity of learning foreign culture and their own cultures. The fifth article deals with the finding that shows unsupportive behavior of the supervisors and difficulties of selecting the appropriate area of study. They were the major challenges that students ever facing in writing thesis. Similarly, the next article reveals that both the teachers and the students were affirmative towards learner autonomy but most of them did not adopt it in English language teaching and learning. The seventh article shows a number of challenges in implementing self directed learning even if both the teachers and students had positive attitudes towards it. The eighth article justifies that mixed methods research design, which has been a recent practice in academia, should be adopted in the research of universities and the research centres. Similarly, the ninth article examines the strategies employed in learning English by Bachelor level students in Nepalese context. The following article reveals that integrated approach of language teaching is sure to pursue its harmony in teaching language. The final article concludes that majority of English teachers at secondary level followed product approach in teaching writing which led them to face a number of challenges in teaching writing. We have made this a peer reviewed journal, in which a number of hands directly and/or indirectly, seen or unseen have bestowed to maintain quality and standard to bring it into this form. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the contributors and reviewers from home and abroad without whose rigorous support, the journal would not have come to this form. Fluency-first approaches such as Communicative Language Teaching and Task-based Language Teaching aim at the development of communicative competence in students by engaging them in meaningful interaction. Ability to speak accurate, appropriate and effective English is vital for meaningful interaction that ensures students' communicative competence in English. Unfortunately, in the Nepalese context, especially in government-aided schools and constituent colleges of Tribhuvan University (TU), speaking skill lies on the periphery of English Language Teaching (ELT) owing to several factors. This article attempts to explore those factors that have been a hindrance in developing speaking skill in Nepalese students in general and the students from the above-mentioned institutions in particular. This article draws on the author's experience as a supervisor of student teachers from B.Ed. and M.Ed. programmes and his teaching experience at a constituent campus of TU. This qunatitatively based research utilising quasi experimental design, sought to explore the effect of implementing the flipped classroom (FC) pedagogical approach on female, preparatory year program (PYP) English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students at the English Language Institute (ELI), King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Saudi Arabia. An experimental group as well as a control group were assigned in this study. The data collection was carried out using multiple sources, including pre- and post-speaking achievement tests in addition to two custom designed questionnaires. The results revealed that the FC did not sufficiently enhance the experimental group’s speaking skill to cause a statistical significance in comparison to the controlled group. On the other hand, students held a positive attitude toward the FC experiment and the used instructional videos. The study also aims to enlighten and familiarise EFL colleagues within the context of Saudi Arabia, as well EFL colleagues from around the world, with this pedagogical approach in the area of EFL education. Conclusions and recommendations for future research studies are presented at the end of this paper.
