In this case study with a qualitative approach we aim to analyze perspectives of students on the intercultural competence and its development during their academic exchange period abroad. The increasingly competitive and globalized labor market requires knowledgeable professionals from an intercultural point of view. The techniques to collect data were semi-structured interviews and participant observation. Data analysis procedures followed content analysis. The results suggest that the perception of cultural differences increases in students, although the development and improvement of institutional policies of universities is necessary for the preparation of strategies that promote the development of said competences. Conclusions point towards the increased relevance that intercultural competence represents on Higher Education nowadays and on future professionals.

<p>Abstract<br />This study aims to describe the factors causing the decrease of early child participation in Taman Pendidikan Al Qur’an (TPA) Al Huda and its interaction. This research uses qualitative approach with case study method. This research was conducted at TPA Al Huda Dukuh Tanggung Desa Menjing. The sample of this study was 11 children. Data collection was conducted with in-depth interviews and participant observation. Data were analyzed with interactive model analysis. The results of this research include 1) Factors causing the decline of early childhood participation in TPA Al Huda that is a) They have received Islamic learning in kindergarten, b) They do not get special attention from parents, c) Their siblings do not participate, and ) They get Influence from more mature friends, e) They have different sects, and f) They participate in the new mosque dumping. 2) The interaction of factors causing the decline of early childhood participation in the TPA Al Huda shows that the majority of children are affected by more than one factor. </p><p><br />Abstrak <br />Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan penuruan partisipasi anak usia dini di Taman Pendidikan Al Qur’an (TPA) Al Huda beserta interaksinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada TPA Al Huda Dukuh Tanggung Desa Menjing. Sampel yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini sebanyak 11 anak. Pengumpulan data dilaksanakan dengan wawancara mendalam dan observasi terlibat. Analisis data menggunakan model analisis interaktif. Hasil penelitian ini meliputi 1) Faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan penurunan partisipasi anak usia dini di TPA Al Huda meliputi a) Telah mendapat pembelajaran agama Islam di TK, b) Tidak memperoleh perhatian khusus dari orang tua, c) Kakak kandung tidak berpartisipasi di TPA, d) Pengaruh teman yang lebih dewasa, e) Berbeda aliran/mazhab, dan f) Berpindah ke TPA masjid baru. 2) Interaksi faktor penyebab penuruan partisipasi anak usia dini di TPA Al Huda, menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas anak terdampak lebih dari satu faktor.<br /><br /></p>

Amil zaka in zaka institutions has the right as one of eight ashnaf. Their rights are usually used by zaka institutions as operational cost. However, not all of the intitutions which manage zaka take amil’s right, one of them is Yayasan Nurul Hayat. This institution does not take amil’s right and it is independent in its operational cost. To support this operational cost, Yayasan Nurul Hayat establish business unit with utilize its profit.This study aimed to discover the capability of business unit in supporting operational cost of Yayasan Nurul Hayat. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive case study method. The selections of informant are using purposive sampling method. Data collection was conducted by semi-structured interviews and documentation. This data is analyzed using descriptive method.The result of this study shows that Yayasan Nurul Hayat Employments’ Salary is taken from business unit’s profit. It is also used to give bonus for employments and grow the business unit of Yayasan Nurul Hayat up. From the result of this study, it can be concluded that the business unit which is developed has great capability to support operational cost of Yayasan Nurul Hayat.

ABSTRACT Objective: to understand the experience of being a mother of a child and a nurse working in the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: a research study with a qualitative approach, conducted with 17 participants from different cities of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Data collection took place in the months of April and May 2020, through semi-structured interviews conducted via an open access virtual communication platform. The data were thematically analyzed, based on the Complexity Paradigm. Results: the absence and mismatch of scientific and systematic information at the beginning of the pandemic, the fragile institutional support, and the concern of contamination of the children generated stress and anguish in the mother-nurses. The support previously offered by schools and family members was hindered by the pandemic, leading to a greater demand for parental care. Creative strategies to provide distraction, as well as religiousness and spirituality were valued to face the chaos experienced. Conclusion: nurses, while being valued as important frontline professionals in the fight against the pandemic, are invisible in their personal-affective dimension and in that of being a mother. The study indicates the need for structural institutional policies so that mother-nurses are placed in a position of equality and safety for the full exercise of the profession and a healthy intra-family relationship, especially in contexts of adversity such as that experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A reflexão sobre as práticas ambientais, em um contexto marcado pela degradação permanente do meio ambiente e do seu ecossistema, tem exigido novas posturas das organizações. Contudo, adotar a gestão ambiental como estratégia de desenvolvimento, contempla as necessidades das organizações em aliar crescimento econômico e sustentabilidade. Neste sentido, este artigo tem como objetivo identificar se existe a preocupação com as questões ambientais por parte das organizações da região da Quarta Colônia e se as mesmas adotam programas de gestão ambiental, analisando fatores que podem influenciar nas diferentes abordagens dadas ao tema. Para atingir o objetivo proposto, utilizou-se uma abordagem qualitativa em um estudo considerado exploratório e compreendido como estudo de caso. A amostra foi de cinco organizações da Região da Quarta Colônia onde foram realizadas visitas técnicas e entrevistas semi-estruturadas. Como resultado significativo do estudo, pôde se constatar que as organizações estudadas limitam-se apenas às exigências da legislação ambiental em vigor. Assim as organizações necessitam adotar novas posturas e um processo de atualização contínua que pode ser viabilizado pela gestão ambiental. Abstract The reflection about environmental practices, in a context marked by permanent degradation of the environment and its ecosystem, has required new strategies from the organizations. However, adopting environmental management as a development strategy satisfies the organizations needs to gather economic growth and sustainability. Thus, this paper aims on identifying whether the organizations from the Quarta Colonia Region are concerned about environmental issues and whether they adopt environmental management programs, analyzing aspects which can influence the different approaches applied to this issue. In order to reach such aim, a qualitative approach was used in a study considered exploratory and comprised as a case study. The sample consisted of five organizations from the Quarta Colonia Region where there were technical visits and semi-structured interviews. A relevant result of the study was that it was possible to observe that the studied organizations are restricted only to the operative environmental law requirements. Thus, organizations ought to adopt new emplacements and a continuous updating process, which can become viable through the environmental management. <p>This research examined the use of learning stories as a way to gather, analyse and use evidence to support the development of social studies conceptual understandings. This is important because there is limited research in New Zealand related to social studies assessment in secondary school environments, or in the monitoring of conceptual changes in understanding. The limited research that can be drawn upon highlights the challenges social studies teachers face teaching and assessing conceptually.  Sociocultural theory featured strongly throughout the research, through the decision to investigate learning stories as an assessment approach, as well as the lens with which to approach the methodology. In order to investigate the Learning Story Framework, as an intervention, a qualitative design-based methodology was utilised involving one in-depth case study. The research composed of three iterative phases, gathering evidence using semi-structured interviews, participant observation and documentation analysis, including reflective journals.  The findings suggested that learning stories can be used to support the development of conceptual understandings in conjunction with a reflective class culture, strong community relationships, clarity of planning for and sharing conceptual understandings, and support for students to critically reflect.</p>

The third theme of the book seeks to understand the role of mineral resources in the African continent's socio-economic development. The case study of the DRC is used to understand the role played by the state-owned mining company Gecamines to socio-economic conditions of employees and the country's development at large. Resource curse and realism theories are utilised in this case study to unpack the role of mineral resources to Gecamines employees' access to education and healthcare in particular and to the entire country in general. The chapter employed a case study design with a qualitative approach research in its endeavour of exploring Gecamines' socio-economic contribution to its employees. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with Gecamines' managers, unskilled mine workers, and the Provincial Department of Mines' officers.

This case study explores an open distance learning program offered by the Information Technology and Computing (ITC) department at AOUJ, a major university in Jordan. It provides an overview of e-learning in the Arab region and explores factors that affect ODL quality in the Arab Open University in Jordan (AOUJ). The research utilized a qualitative approach, which included five lengthy semi-structured interviews with the program director, two instructors, and three students. Three important conclusions can be drawn from the study about e-learning in the Arab region: (1) the existence of adverse conditions, (2) the presence of strong instructional practices, and (3) the need to improve administrative support.

This study's objective was to identify changes in decision-making arising from the revitalization of the participatory management model and how these changes impacted the daily work of the nursing staff, as well as to identify potential difficulties. This qualitative case study was conducted in a public hospital in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Participant observation and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 23 nursing workers and the Health Technical Assistant. We used thematic content analysis for data analysis. The revitalization of the management model was not comprehensive because many professionals were oblivious to the process. Shared actions did not occur and adherence to the model was hampered because the workers were not fully informed of the assumptions concerning this management model. For the implementation of this model to be effective, teamwork and the inclusion of all the stakeholders should be reviewed in order to achieve more cooperative and qualified work.

The majority of British Muslims live in cities such as London, Leicester, Birmingham and Bradford—and academic research thus far has reflected a city and post-manufacturing town emphasis. This paper investigates the as yet undocumented history and mosque politics of Muslims living in the small town of Eastbourne, East Sussex, using participant observation and unstructured and semi-structured interviews. Firstly, I conceptualise my case study group by highlighting some differences found in a small town in terms of the origins of its Muslims, their ethnic heterogeneity, and residential spatial distribution. Secondly, I explore mosque politics in terms of mosque planning, public reactions to mosque rebuilding, and mosque management issues.

PurposeThis research aims to contribute to the literature on Lean implementation in healthcare by studying the emotional experiences of the relevant actors related to a Rapid Process Improvement Workshop (RPIW) in a UK healthcare context. The purpose of this study was to go beyond what people think about Lean and towards an exploration of their subjective, emotional and “feeling” experience and whether that emotional experience influenced Lean implementation.Design/methodology/approachA phenomenological and symbolic interactionist qualitative case study was undertaken. Data related to participants' emotional experience were collected through non-participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed using thematic network analysis.FindingsThis paper provides novel insights into the emotional experience of Lean as experienced through an RPIW. The findings reveal that participation in an RPIW is much more than a technical process. It influences how people feel about themselves, is based on relationships with others, and requires mental, physical and emotional effort. All of these factors influence engagement with, initiation of and sustainability of the RPIW.Research limitations/implicationsA new conceptual framework for the planning and implementation of RPIWs has been developed. However, because of the chosen research approach, the results may lack generalisability. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test the framework and proposed practice implications.Originality/valueDespite emotions being an integral part of individual and social everyday life, emotional experience has not been studied in relation to Lean. This study is the first to explore emotions in relation to Lean, with implications for practice as to how RPIWs are managed with a new framework for implementation being proposed.
