The analysis of educational systems involves four central dimensions: economic, pedagogical, political and cultural. This paper focuses on the economic perspective, which has gained strength with the creation of the Basic Education Development Index (Ideb), and facilitates comparative analyzes of the performance of Brazilian educational systems. This research uses a linear least squares regression in which the dependent variables were the Ideb scores of Brazilian states and the independent variables were the corresponding investments in the maintenance and development of education (MDE), in the period 2005-2015. The results allow a comparative picture to be drawn of the effectiveness of the use of state resources invested by the states. It is verified that the investments in basic education in the states only partially explain the improved learning rates measured by the Ideb. Three distinct situations were observed. In 23 states there was an increase in investment in education accompanied by improvement in the Ideb. In 18 states, the increase in investments accompanied the improvement in the Ideb over a certain period, although this effect was not sustained throughout the historical series. In only 05 states, the relationship between investment and improvement in the Ideb remained positive throughout the analyzed period.

Nationwide, 63.0% of companies consider insecurity and crime as a major problem that affects them. (INEGI, 2018). On 2018 in Guanajuato, 93.3% of companies considered it unsafe, with an increase of 38.3% over 2016 (INEGI, 2018). Their municipalities are no exception, in the case of Valle de Santiago, we seek to analyze the relationship between insecurity and violence with respect to annual sales of micro and small enterprises, the research is conducted through a cross-descriptive design, with a quantitative approach, through the questionnaire as an instrument, obtaining a sample of 550 companies. As a result of the research it was obtained that 90.7% of the directors of the micro and small companies express to be worried by the insecurity and violence that occurs in the municipality and therefore an impact is observed in the annual sales according to the calculation of the R square, obtaining 0.765. Given the importance that micro and small enterprises have for the economic development of the municipality, the issue of insecurity and violence must be considered a priority due to its growing incidence, not only at the local level.

We conducted a questionnaire survey among 602 subjects in order to analyze the awareness and knowledge on oral cancer among residents of the city of Valongo in Portugal. The cancer that most subjects were aware of was breast cancer (99%). Oral cancer was the least mentioned cancer (68.6%). There was awareness of the relationship between oral cancer and smoking among 89.5% subjects, but less of the association with alcohol misuse (63.3%). Nonhealing mouth ulcers were identified as a sign or symptom of oral cancer by 90.0% and red or white patch by only 52.8% subjects. Whereas 94.5% agreed that early detection could improve the treatment outcome, a disheartening 28.1% believed that whether a person developed an oral cancer or not is a matter of luck and therefore is unavoidable. Surprisingly only 1.7% were ever submitted to or had knowledge of receiving a consultation regarding oral cancer. In conclusion, this survey demonstrates a general lack of awareness and knowledge on oral cancer in a population of Valongo. An oral health promotion strategy should involve elements of basic education on oral cancer for this population, and regular oral cancer screenings should be implemented in Valongo.

This article discusses the struggles of urban social movements for a de-neoliberalisation of housing policies in Poulantzian terms as a “condensation of the relationship of forces”. Drawing on an empirical analysis of the “Berliner Mietenvolksentscheid” (Berlin rent referendum), which was partially successful in forcing the city government of Berlin to adopt a more progressive housing policy, the article argues that urban social movements have the capacity to challenge neoliberal housing regimes. However, the specific materiality of the state apparatus and its strategic selectivity both limit the scope of intervention for social movements aiming at empowerment and non-hierarchical decision-making.

While many analysts have commented on the representation of 1968 campus events and antiwar demonstrations, less attention has been paid to the global significance of the dramatic struggles in industrial Detroit during the period. The meanings of events in the city were intensely fought over. As Stuart Hall, Chas Critcher, Tony Jefferson, John Clarke, and Brian Roberts observed, the events of 1968 were “an act of collective will, the breaks and ruptures stemming from the rapid expansion in the ideology, culture and civil structures of the new capitalism . . . in the form of a ‘crisis of authority.’” In Detroit the crisis of authority was expressed in the form of popular political struggles against racism, state violence, and the contradictions of life in the industrial capitalist city. This article asks and answers the following research questions about the struggle over the meaning of this decisive turning point in US history: What was the relationship between racial ordering, uneven capitalist development, and mass antiracist and class struggles? How did Black working-class organic intellectuals resist and alter hegemonic definitions of the situation? How are the dialectics of insurgency and counterinsurgency to be best theorized during this precise historical conjuncture?
