Over the centuries, humanity's notions and worldview of what education should be have changed constantly in the order it serves both the development goals of society as a whole and the interests and needs of each individual. In the global educational environment, including Latvia, several educational paradigms have emerged and nowadays coexist which often complement each other. Among them, the Open Education paradigm plays an important role, where the main emphasis is on access to education. The aim of the research: to substantiate Open Education as a philosophical-methodological basis for distance education. The results of the research show that the origins of Open Education can be found in the philosophical thought of the Enlightenment era philosophers, as well as representatives of education, culture, and religion. The roots of the Open Education ideas can be traced to the history of distance learning, these ideas developed in close connection with the development of distance education/distance learning theories and their implementation in practice. From the 18th century to the present day, the ideas of Open Education developed and supplemented with new views on the aims, basic dimensions and principles, and functions of education, gaining more larger interpretation of this concept. At the end of the twentieth century, Open Education became the basis for a new educational paradigm in the Postmodernism era not only regarding distance education. Open Education became one of the most important doctrines of Postmodernism in the development of education, according to which the concepts of open education, open educational environment, and open school developed. There are three dimensions of Open Education: space, time, and process. Open Education and distance education have common three basic principles: openness, respect for distance in providing education, and flexibility.

The advancement of technological resources has provided new possibilities in teaching and learning processes. This progress resulted in an improvement to the Distance Education (DE). However, this type of education still faces the serious problem of circumvention having as a major cause, lack of motivation among students. Thus, the use of new technological trends has been increasingly common with the purpose to provide greater attractiveness for student participation in distance learning courses. Thus, this study aims to propose a multiagent virtual environment in three dimensions to support the recommendation of learning objects in order to improve the teaching and learning processes in DE.

Abstract Background The use of distance education using digital tools in higher education has increased over the last decade, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, this study aimed to describe and evaluate nursing students’ experiences of the pedagogical transition from traditional campus based learning to distance learning using digital tools. Methods The nursing course Symptom and signs of illness underwent a transition from campus based education to distance learning using digital tools because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This pedagogical transition in teaching was evaluated using both quantitative and qualitative data analysis. Focus group interviews (n = 9) were analysed using qualitative content analysis to explore students’ experiences of the pedagogical transition and to construct a web-based questionnaire. The questionnaire comprised 14 items, including two open-ended questions. The questionnaire was delivered to all course participants and responses were obtained from 96 of 132 students (73%). Questionnaire data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and comments from the open-ended questions were used as quotes to highlight the quantitative data. Results The analysis of the focus group interviews extracted three main dimensions: didactic aspects of digital teaching, study environment, and students’ own resources. Social interaction was an overall theme included in all three dimensions. Data from the questionnaire showed that a majority of students preferred campus based education and experienced deterioration in all investigated dimensions after the pedagogical transition. However, approximately one-third of the students appeared to prefer distance learning using digital tools. Conclusions The main finding was that the pedagogical transition to distance education reduced the possibility for students’ social interactions in their learning process. This negatively affected several aspects of their experience of distance learning using digital tools, such as reduced motivation. However, the heterogeneity in the responses suggested that a blended learning approach may offer pedagogical benefits while maintaining an advantageous level of social interaction.

This article presents the results of research on the effectiveness of distance education in Mathematics for higher education students. A digital course in Differential Calculus was created, which was evaluated by the students who participated in it. The aim of the quantitative research carried out was to identify the conditions needed for the implementation of a digital distance education model. The design includes the integration of activities based on learning theories at targeted points of the distance learning. From the results, it appears that the students achieved the learning outcomes that were identified. Moreover, the integration of the relevant activities had a positive impact on the students, who a) positively evaluated the program they attended and b) stated that their knowledge was enhanced at the issues negotiated on the course.

The purpose of the article was to study three groups of factors of perception of the introduction of interactive methods of distance education in the educational environment of Higher Education Institutions. The research used general scientific research methods, questionnaire methods, methods for integrated assessment, mathematical methods of data processing: calculation of consolidated characteristics of motivation, sign test. The study revealed a lo w level of student knowledge about distance education technologies and, by contrast, a high level of student interest in mastering interactive distance education methods. The article detects the influence of the educational environment of the HEIs in the formation of the disposition of the students to use interactive technologies of distance education. The article considers properties of interactive methods such as mobility, openness, accessibility and the use of interactive distance learning technologies. The article aims to study the peculiarities of the students' attitude towards the introduction of interactive distance learning technologies in the educational process. Other research perspectives are in the creation of a system for monitoring the preparation of students for the implementation of innovative technologies in relation to the constant development of scientific and technological progress.

The phenomenon of distance learning in modern scientific and pedagogical discourse is studied. Peculiarities of distance learning organization in tourism and related branches of hotel and restaurant service are determined. An analysis of the spread of distance learning in the world. The state and prospects of the organization of the system of distance learning of specialists of the tourist branch in Ukraine are analyzed. The method of conducting a study of the organization of distance learning in domestic free economic zones is considered. The possibilities of the Moodle learning management system are investigated . The directions of the organization of distance learning in the course of studying of separate disciplines by students of IHE are offered. The directions of introduction of the newest innovative technologies in are outlined c system of distance education and their investment It is specified that the prerequisites for the emergence of forms of distance learning are: a new educational paradigm that has identified priorities for the development of open education. The positive dynamics of socio-economic. scientific and technological development is depicted, such as: strengthening integration and democratic processes in education and society as a whole; informatization of education and introduction of information and communication technologies in the educational process of higher education institutions , rapid development of information technologies; the emergence of educational environments, distance learning platforms as a means of implementing the tasks of distance education. The criteria for evaluating the quality of the electronic distance learning course have been clarified. The comparison of distance courses of pedagogical free economic zones on the basis of criteria of structural and functional examination is carried out. To eliminate the identified shortcomings of distance learning courses in the study of disciplines in the cycle of management of restaurant and hotel and tourism business, it is necessary to develop guidelines for the preparation of electronic training courses for the study of these disciplines in the organization of distance learning.

Abstract Distance learning and e-learning have significantly developed in recent years. It is also due to changing educational requirements, especially for adults. The article aims to show the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning. Examples of the 20-year use of the distance learning form of computer science describe the difficulties associated with the implementation and implementation of this form of teaching. The results of students in the full-time and distance form of teaching in the bachelor’s study of computer science are compared. Long-term findings show that distant students have significantly lower scores in the first years of study than full-time bachelor students. In the following years of study, the differences diminish, and students’ results are comparable. The article describes the possibilities of improving the quality of distance learning.
