Introduction. Today, foreign language competence of a person is a necessary means of active social and professional life. Despite this, quite a lot of young people do not always have the desire to learn foreign languages. This paradox made the motivation to learn foreign languages a popular issue to research worldwide. The article presents the scoping review of international studies devoted to the issue of motivation to learn foreign languages. First of all, it is necessary to understand the research trends in the study of this issue in general, and to determine factors, which influence the lack of students' interest to learn foreign languages in particular. The aim of the present research is to outline the current focus trends and to define the gaps in international research papers aimed at investigating the issue of motivation for foreign languages learning.Methodology and research methods. The methodological framework of the current research is based on the qualitative content analysis of relevant empirical research on this issue from the periodicals indexed by the international databases Scopus and Web of Science over the last 15 years. This review will provide an understanding of the degree of knowledge of the analysed issues at the international level.Results. The research works on the issues of motivation for foreign languages learning were divided into two main categories: the research works concentrated on inner - academic and professional factors, and the works which deal with the outer - social factors of influence. Within these groups, the existing research trends and the most promising research areas were identified (for instance, the influence of peers on the motivational sphere of students). Amongst the numerous works investigating external (socio-economic) factors of influence, there is insufficient research on the influence of macro-political and macro-economic factors on the motivation for learning languages (for instance, foreign languages learning preferences). The research outcomes will contribute to understanding the factors, which influence the students' lack of interest in learning foreign languages. The scientific novelty is in the originality of the demonstrated review, which includes many scientific papers performed by scientists from all over the world and based on various research procedures. In the review, the geographical principle of data selection was not used and the publication date was not taken into account. The main selection criterion was a research paper to be published in a journal peer-reviewed by international databases over the last 15 years.Such a principle was necessary to understand research trends in the issue of motivation for mastering a foreign language competence and to determine similar (or specific) factors for different countries, which cause students' lack of interest in learning foreign languages.Practical significance. The results of the obtained analysis will give understanding of the reasons for the lack of students' motivation to study foreign languages. Moreover, it will help to find a solution to this international challenge.

The article analyzes modern methods of teaching a foreign language and justifies the expediency of their use in technical institutions of higher education. The process of teaching English in non-linguistic higher educational institutions has certain features related to the different initial level of language training of first-year students; the number of academic hours allocated to the study of this discipline; the quantitative composition of groups; low motivation to learn a foreign language. It is noted that motivation plays an important role in the educational process, the formation of which among students of technical universities should be one of the main tasks of the educational process. It is established that it is possible to significantly increase the effectiveness of the lesson provided that the content of the discipline "foreign language" is professionally oriented in technical universities. It is found that the use of interactive learning technologies involves the use of communicative, in particular cognitive-communicative, and constructivist methods of teaching a foreign language. It is proved that the use of innovative approaches to teaching English and multimedia teaching tools allows students to increase motivation to learn foreign languages, provide access to new, alternative sources of information, develop independent mental activity, form communication skills, cultural and professional competence.

Apart from language competence, also the cultural competence is developed as it is a necessary component of communication. A successful transfer of knowledge and language skills in the process of foreign language learning is determined by a textbook (in addition to other factors). The goal of this article is to analyze the content and assess three Danish textbooks, which were published in Germany in the years 2008-2010. The textbooks are examined in terms of knowledge about Danish life and institutions, the transfer of intercultural competence and the presence of stereotypes. The textbooks were studied based on the list of criteria and it resulted in stating that the textbooks fulfill the objective of providing the knowledge about the country to a great degree. The intercultural component and the issue of stereotypes are dealt with in a different manner.

We conducted a pedagogical experiment among students of the Faculty of Preschool Education of the "South Ural State Humanitarian Pedagogical University". After the experiment, it was dicovered how the students' motivation to learn a foreign language had changed. The percentage of motivated students in the experimental group increased by about 10%. According to the level of formation of the procedural component of interactive competence, the results in the experimental group changed as follows: the low level of formation of the procedural component of interactive competence changed from 31% to 15%, the number of students with an average level of formation of the procedural component of interactive competence increased from 54% to 70%, the percentage of students with a high level of formation of this component of interactive competence remained the same. We believe that the use of interactive teaching methods in a foreign language class contributes to the formation of interactive competence, the basis of which is the necessity to combine language competence, professional knowledge and skills, as well as the socio-behavioral context.

The article describes the experiences of applying cognitive linguistic approach to development of learners foreign language competence. It is suggested that the introduction of new language material should be based on conceptual representations (senses) of language forms rather than on comparability of native and foreign languages. Behind the cognitive approach to teaching foreign language there is a proposition that language is connected with reality or one of the possible realities through interpreting activity of an individual. The author discusses such issues of cognitive science as knowledge representation, information processing, development of language consciousness and individual learning styles in relation to teaching Russian learners a foreign language. The article describes the experiences of using cognitive mechanisms in development of effective tools in teaching a foreign language, in particular such topics as the system of the English article, teaching learners new foreign language vocabulary, usage of polysemantic words. The enhancement of language didactics paradigm with cognitive issues appears to be beneficial not only in learning a foreign language but also in development the learners general discursive competence.

The high requirements for training a military specialist include improving the quality of language education for students of military universities, which can be accomplished by reforming ineffective teaching methods in a foreign language. Moreover, when updating and improving existing methods and developing technologies of teaching foreign languages, it is necessary to take into account the specifics of the educational institution, the closeness and isolation of the military organization. Given these features, modern methods of teaching foreign languages in military universities should be aimed at the formation of professional competence, and the development of a versatile personality, able to express their opinions competently. Formation of foreign language discursive competence in military specialists will not only effectively and profoundly acquire practical knowledge, but will also help to develop professional motivation for learning a foreign language. In order to study the ways of formation of discursive competence in students of higher military educational institutions it is advisable to: identify the essence of discursive competence, giving it the most capacious definition; determine the structure of the phenomenon under study and identify its main components; to determine the specifics of discursive competence in higher military education. Based on most definitions, foreign-language discursive competence should be developed as a pragmatic ability, selecting as a basis the skills and competencies that will be most relevant within a particular military specialty. Modern training technologies and developments, based on the basic principles of teaching a foreign language for professional purposes, can significantly improve the efficiency of the process of learning a foreign language

We considered the issue of the role of linguistic and cultural materials in the formation and development of a stable positive motivation for learning a foreign language. We disclosed the concept of “Linguistic and Culture Studies”, the connection between it and the formation of linguistic- and sociocultural competencies. We gave the main conditions to be met by a foreign-language text used as the main linguistic and culture material (authenticity, relevance, typicity). We also listed forms of working with trainees in which you can use linguistic and cultural materials. We highlighted the following organizational forms: individual, group, collective work. The focus is on considering not only lexical proficiency in the target language, but also the use of a foreign language as a means of intercultural communication. We disclosed the conditions of formation of socio- and linguistic-cultural competencies. The conclusion shows the overall outcome of the work and shows the advantages of classes, which include the linguistic and cultural aspect and, due to this, have great methodological potential, allowing you to build new models of classes that improve the quality of mastery of a foreign language. Such training contributes to the consolidation of subject-subject relations between the student and the teacher, establishing between them a real cooperation of equal partners in the pedagogical process.
