The aim of the paper is to determine the scale of agricultural land conversion in gmina (municipalities) located in selected metropolitan areas of Poland. Analyses were conducted taking into account the location of agricultural land in relation to the core of metropolitan area and its suitability for agricultural production. The research has shown that in the metropolitan areas selected for analysis, agricultural land conversion in the period 1996–2014 was over twice as fast as the average for Poland, with the most land converted in the core of a metropolitan area, little less in the first zone of gmina around the core, and the least in gmina located on the outskirts of a metropolitan area. The hypothesis saying that the distance of a gmina from the core of the metropolitan area is a significant factor in the differences in conversion processes, and high quality of environmental conditions of agricultural production does not limit (in a significant way) the process of farmland abandonment has been positively verified.

The aim of the paper was to indicate differences in income from agricultural activity earned by farm owners located in different zones under the influence of a big city. The study covered entities from six voivodships: Lower Silesia, Lubelskie, Lesser Poland, Masovia, Pomerania and Greater Poland. The database of the Polish FADN system was the source of data presented in the analysis. The outer and inner metropolitan zone have been distinguished as well as the group of objects located outside metropolitan areas. For the distinguished groups, a comparative analysis was carried out. Research pinpointed that in the inner metropolitan area zone, there was evidently a considerably higher income from a farm on one unit of own work and the estimate rate of wage for an hour of hired work. The average value of these categories was diminishing in subsequent zones along with moving away from the core of metropolitan areas. Apart from that, in all the three researched groups of farms, the average rate of wage of own work was higher than the rate of wage of hired work. This means that farm owners also take wages from management and the incurred economy risk. The height of these wages is subjected to considerable fluctuation that result from e.g., observed economic fluctuations in agriculture.

AbstractRelations between metropolitan core cities and regional and sub-regional centres are part of a broader discussion on the importance of metropolitan areas for the development of regions. These relations are dealt with in this paper in the context of the growth pole theory. The paper focuses on the migration process in relation to enterprises. By moving their businesses, companies contribute to backwash and spread effects. Since company migrations between municipalities occur in both directions, the question remains open as to which migration direction dominates – whether from sub-regional centres to core cities or vice versa. This paper attempts to verify the hypothesis that regional and sub-regional centres in the Mazowieckie voivodship suffer the largest loss of enterprises due to migration to the core city of Warsaw. The results obtained were varied and the hypothesis was confirmed, especially in the case of three cities: Siedlce, Radom and Płock; and partly in the case of Ciechanów.

This paper focuses on the demand for library services by nonresidents of the community which finances the library. For several middle-size metropolitan areas in New York, it is shown that nonresidents contribute substantially to the financial burden of supporting a library. In addition, while the core areas's ability to support libraries is likely to decrease in the future, the demand for library services by nonresidents is likely to increase. This may lead to a change in the current scheme of local financing used by many public libraries in the United States.

Title in Portuguese: Segregação racial e socioeconômica: Uma análise de três áreas metropolitanas brasileirasAbstract: Brazil is characterized by racial and socioeconomic segregation. The objective of the research presented here is to analyze socioeconomic and racial segregation in three metropolitan areas (Recife, Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre). Microdata from the 2000 Brazilian Census was used for this analysis, as well as maps produced for the selected areas by groups of census tracts (áreas de ponderação), using Geographic Information Systems techniques. In general, results indicate that among those areas with a majority of whites, a high proportion of the population holds at least high school degree. Moreover, the nonwhite population lives farther away from the core of the municipality, compared to whites. Finally, whites tend to live in less elevated areas with more public infrastructure and a greater availability of major roads. An improvement to this research could be the inclusion of spatial analysis and statistical models to better understand the relationship between race and socioeconomic indicators.

Analysis of the Labour Market in Metropolitan Areas: A Spatial Filtering ApproachThe power of today's computers allows us to perform computation on massive quantities of data on the one hand and produces enormous amounts of analysis output on the other, as noted by Griffith in his 2003 book. Besides, visualisation and spatial filtering (the core of considerations in Griffith's book) have a chance to be widely used in research practice, especially in geosciences and, more precisely, for georeferenced data. Following the idea proposed by Patuelli et al. (2006, 2009), we analysed the labour market in Poland, focusing on metropolitan areas and their surroundings. The analysis was performed on a data set for the unemployment rate in the 2,478 Polish communes. We took into account spatial autocorrelation and used spatial filtering techniques to construct components of an orthogonal map pattern. As shown in Tiefelsdorf & Griffith (2007), the spatial filtering techniques could be employed in both, parametric and semi-parametric approaches. In this paper we adopted a parametric one.

The aim of this analyses was to assess the changes in the organisation and scale of plant production of commercial farms located within varying distances from the core of metropolitan areas. The analysis covered a total of 1,854 commercial farms from Pomorskie, Wielkopolskie, Mazowieckie, Lubelskie, Dolnośląskie and Małopolskie voivodeships that participated in the FADN system over an uninterrupted period between 2004 and 2016. In the study population, entities engaged in production in various functional zones of metropolitan areas (MA) were identified. The study found that in the commercial farms operating in the inner zone of MAs, field cropping and horticulture are gaining importance while livestock production is subject to marginalisation.

The aim of the paper is to present opinions and perceptions of the benefits of urban and peri- -urban (UPA) agriculture among inhabitants of Polish metropolitan areas (MA). The paper is based on a survey conducted among 512 inhabitants of Polish metropolitan areas. The research has shown that the concept of urban agriculture is relatively little known in Poland, and inhabitants are quite sceptical about the benefits generated by agriculture in metropolitan areas. A relatively low acceptance of agricultural functions was mainly expressed by inhabitants of MA’s cores, and the further away from the core, the more highly they were rated. Significant social, environmental and economic importance was attributed to agriculture mostly by inhabitants of rural municipalities located further away from the MA core.

Managing the polycentralization of metropolitan areas can contribute to a more even pace of development of builtup areas; it can also increase the economic and temporary accessibility of urban centers. This study, attempts to synthesize the main hypothetical provisions of a comprehensive approach to managing the development of polycentric metropolitan areas in post-socialist countries. It presents the necessity for modeling not only the core city, but also the entire metropolitan area when managing polycentralization. The study reveals the formalized stages of how a polycentric metropolitan area evolves and presents a comprehensive analysis on the main problems of a technological and methodological, administrative and legal nature in managing the development of polycentric metropolitan areas. It also highlights the significance of comprehensively developing the transport infrastructure and the prevalence of information and telecommunication technologies within the metropolitan area, as well as the spatial compactness of the metropolitan areas for the polycentralization progress. It is considered that the specific features of the post-socialist urban process can affect polycentralization, including (post-) suburbanization, reurbanization, and gentrification. Finally, measures are suggested in the field of scientific research and technologies, and municipal and regional management aimed at increasing the manageability of developing polycentric metropolitan areas in a postsocialist urban planning context.

Abstract This paper deals with the institutional and factual readiness of cities and villages in the Czech Republic to use Integrated Territorial Investments (ITI). On the basis of a questionnaire survey carried out in May 2014 among representatives of 69 municipalities around the core cities of Brno, Jihlava, Olomouc and Hradec Králové - Pardubice as well as a comparison of several model agglomerations, it identifies the main problems and proposes solutions to them. The main theme of this paper is to evaluate the formation of partnerships of municipalities and the process of creating integrated strategies for metropolitan areas. The paper also deals with the relationships and functional links between cities and villages and their hinterland, the common development issues and the existing structures of cooperation and communication. In the conclusion possible recommendations are given to improve the ITI functioning in the Czech Republic on the basis of both, the assessment of the situation in the Republic itself and the reflection on developments in other EU countries.
