Background: Overweight and obesity are chronic medical condition responsible for risk factors for many non-communicable diseases. Development of rapid upsurge of these condition in medium and low-income group countries increased the awareness and uses of many types of remedies. Along with other natural herbal products green tea and green coffee have also became popular in communities. Aim of this study was to compare the effect of green tea and green coffee on blood cholesterol and weight in experimental animals.Methods: The experiment of this study was conducted in the Department of Pharmacology, MGM Medical college, Jamshedpur after ethical approval. 24 albino rats were selected and divided randomly in four groups A B C D. Group ‘A’ was kept as control group, group ‘B’ was given fat rich diet to produce hypercholesterolemia, group ‘C’ and ‘D’ were given green tea and green coffee respectively along with cholesterol rich diet. Weight and cholesterol level of rats were measured on 1st day, 2nd week and 4th week.Results: There was significant increase in serum cholesterol in non-treated animals as compared to control group but parameter showed significant less rise of cholesterol and weight in treated group by both green tea and green coffee than non-treated group. The comparative effect of green tea and green coffee had not much difference.Conclusions: This study has provided the information that natural products like green tea and green coffee are useful and helpful in preventive therapy of dyslipidemia and obesity.

Considering the excellent bio-therapeutic benefits of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, this study exploited the probiotic characteristics of Lactobacillus acidophilus-015, Lactobacillus casei-297 and Bifidobacterium bifidum-229 strains with natural prebiotic substances viz. banana powder, malto-dextrin and honey to produce synbiotic food formulations and to study the effect of feeding their on the cholesterol level (mg/dl) of albino rats. On the basis of the preliminary investigation, synbiotic products with 2% banana powder, with 2% malto-dextrin, with 3% honey and synbiotic product with 2% each of, banana powder and malto-dextrin and 1% of honey were selected for the investigation of the total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol. The products showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol level, however the control group receiving the cholesterol rich laboratory diet showed a significant increase (P LESS THEN 0.01) in the total cholesterol after 45 days of feeding. There was 25.81 to 45.05% reduction of serum cholesterol was observed in case of feeding synbiotic formulations. Increase in the HDL-cholesterol and decrease in the non-HDL cholesterol were also significant. Therefore, synbiotic formulation with all these three natural prebiotic have enhanced ability to decreased down the blood cholesterol level.

OBJECTIVE: People generally use lime and lemon when weight reduction is anticipated. This work was carried out to determine the effect of these fruits in hypercholesterolaemic induced rats. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Sixteen (16) albino rats were used and grouped into four groups of four (4) each. The rats were allowed to acclimatize and fed with egg yolk for seven days to induce hypercholesterolaemic state. Water, lemon, lime and lime+lemon were administered to these groups respectively. Cholesterol level was analyzed in all the groups after two (2) weeks of the administration of the fruits. RESULTS: The result showed a statistical decrease in the groups treated with lime, lemon and lime+lemon. The lime+lemon group showed a more significant decrease (p<0.05) in both cholesterol level and body weight when compared with the control group and other groups. This reduction may be as a result of the contents of the fruits. CONCLUSION: It can therefore be concluded that lime and lemon helps in the lowering of blood cholesterol level and body weight. Purpose: The present study aimed to assess functional and structural benefits of erythropoietin (EPO) when administered subconjunctivally in the retina of glaucomatous rats using electroretinography (ERG) and retinal thickness (RT) measurements. Methods: Glaucoma was experimentally induced in 26 Wistar Hannover albino rats. Animals were divided into 2 groups of 13 animals each: a treated group receiving a unique subconjunctival injection of 1,000 IU of EPO and a control group receiving a saline solution. In each group, 7 animals were used for retinal function evaluation (ERG) and 6 animals were used for retinal structural evaluation (histology). RT was measured, dorsally and ventrally, at 500 μm (RT1) and at 1,500 μm (RT2) from the optic nerve. Results: Retinal function evaluation: for both scotopic and photopic conditions, ERG wave amplitudes increased in the treated group. This increase was statistically significant (p < 0.05) in photopic conditions. Structural evaluation: for both locations RT1 and RT2, the retinas were significantly (p < 0.05) thicker in the treated group. Conclusion: Subconjunctival EPO administration showed beneficial effects both on retinal structure and on retinal function in induced glaucoma in albino rats. This neuroprotective effect should be applied in other animal species.

Background:Use of dietary supplements to treat illnesses has increasedtremendously in recentyears.Adrenal gland is one ofthemost commonly damaged endocrine gland in the body, not only by chemical or radiation injuries, but also as a result of differenttypes of stress.Search is underway for use ofnatural foods for protection of adrenal gland from different types ofinsults.Objective: To determine the protective effects of L-arginine on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced adrenal gland injury in albino rats,andto compare its efficacy to insulin.Material and Methods: This prospective experimental study was done at BMSI, JPMC, Karachi. Forty male, healthy albino rats,90-120 days old were segregated into 4 groups. Group A was marked as control, group B was administered STZ, group C and Dwere treated with STZ along with insulin and L-arginine respectively. At the end of study period, i.e., 6 weeks, animals weresacrificed under ether anaesthesia. Tissue from the left adrenal gland was processed for frozen sectioning to observe fat content ofthe adrenal cortex by applying OilRed O stain.Results: Oil Red-0 stained frozen sections revealed closely aggregated fat globules in adrenal cortex of STZ treated group B ascompared to control. Moderate betterment was seen in group C and in group D Oil Red O stained frozen sections as compared toSTZ treated group B.Conclusion: The results ofthe study demonstrated adrenal cortex injury by STZ which ameliorated with concomitant use of insulinandL-arginine. Tramadol is a synthetic, centrally acting analgesic. It is the most consumed narcotic drug that is prescribed in the world. Tramadol abuse has dramatically increased in Egypt. Long term use of tramadol can induce endocrinopathy. So, the aim of this study was to analyze the adrenal insufficiency induced by long term use of tramadol in experimental animals and also to assess its withdrawal effects through histopathological and biochemical genetic study. Forty male albino rats were used in this study. The rats were divided into 4 groups (control group, tramadol-treated group, and withdrawal groups). Tramadol was given to albino rats at a dose of 80 mg/kg body weight for 3 months and after withdrawal periods (7–15 days) rats were sacrificed. Long term use of tramadol induced severe histopathological changes in adrenal glands. Tramadol decreased the levels of serum cortisol and DHEAS hormones. In addition, it increased the level of adrenal MDA and decreased the genetic expression of glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase in adrenal gland tissues. All these changes started to return to normal after withdrawal of tramadol. Thus, it was confirmed that long term use of tramadol can induce severe adrenal insufficiency.

The declining rate of male fertility is a growing concern. Tributyltin (TBT) is a well-known endocrine disruptor (ED), that induces imposex in female gastropods and is widely used in various industrial applications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxic effects of TBT on the testes of adult albino rats and the possible role of omega-3. Forty two adult male albino rats were divided into five groups; control group (Group I) and four experimental groups: omega-3 treated group, TBT treated group, TBT & omega-3 treated group and follow up group. At the end of the study, the rats were subjected to biochemical, histological, immunohistochemical staining for Ki-67 and seminal examinations. Our results clarfied that TBT induced a significant decrease in testosterone, FSH, LH and serum glutathione peroxidase levels and a significant increase in the serum Malondialdehyde as compared to the control group. Tributyltin induced disorganization and shrinkage of seminiferous tubules, apoptosis, cellular damage and marked reduction in the germinal epithelium. A significant decrease in the cell proliferation and arrested spermatogenesis were also detected. Seminal analysis of TBT group showed a significant affection of all parameters as compared to other groups. Omega-3 ameliorated all of these hazardous effects. Follow up group still showed toxic effects. In conclusion, TBT has a toxic effect on the testis. Increased testicular oxidative stress, cellular damage and arrest of spermatogenesis with attenuation in antioxidant defenses are all contributing factors. Omega-3 can protect against TBT induced reproductive toxicity.

Abstract Objectives Evaluate the effect of the nutrition program Niño Sano, Adulto Sano (Healthy Child, Healthy Adult) on mother's nutrition knowledge and food practices. Also, to determine its effect on Body Mass Index (BMI) of both mothers and their children. Methods A total of 43 mothers (35 ± 5 y) and their school-aged children (9 ± 3 y) participated in a 6-month longitudinal controlled study. Participants were residents of two low income communities in Queretaro, Mexico. The program Niño Sano, Adulto Sano was developed using the Intervention Mapping Approach and Social Cognitive Theory and consisted on six nutrition education sessions (1 per month) and six cooking workshops. The control group received three sessions (1 every 2 months) of nutrition education following the Mexican Official Guidelines. Height and weight of mothers and children were taken at baseline and after 6 months to determine mother's BMI and children's BMI-for-age z-score following WHO procedures. Mothers answered a validated questionnaire that consisted of eight Likert-type questions to evaluate nutrition knowledge and food practices at the beginning and end of the study. The data was analyzed by T-student of dependent variables using SPSSv19. Results The combined prevalence of overweight and obesity at baseline was 88.3% and 51.4% for the mothers and their children, respectively. 47% of the children were girls. Mothers that participated in the nutrition program improved their nutrition related knowledge and food practices by 2.99 points (3.14, 95%CI: 1.21, 4.76; P = 0.0001) compared to the control group (1.27, 95%CI: 0.15, 2.39; P = 0.028). Children of the mothers that participated in the program significantly reduce their BMI for age by −0.27 units (0.30, 95%CI: 0.22, 0.39; P = 0.0001) compared with the control group (0.02, 95%IC: −0.11, 0.17 P = 0.70). No differences were observed between groups in the mothers’ BMI at the end of the study. Conclusions The nutrition intervention Niño Sano, Adulto Sano improved nutrition knowledge and food practices of participating mothers, it reduced BMI for age a of their children, but had no effect on mother's BMI. Objectives: Radiotherapy is deleterious to patient health by making the patient more susceptible to other diseases and often causes death by weakening the immune system and also affects cholesterol level. Based on these studies, it was moved toward the selection of Opuntia elatior as a herbal remedy for serum cholesterol level induced by gamma radiation. Methods: The modulatory effect of O. elatior stem extract was studied in Swiss albino mice at dose, i.e., 6 Gy of gamma radiation in the presence (experimental) or absence (control) of O. elatior extract (OEE) (10 mg/kg body weight) to observe in blood cholesterol level alterations. The animals were scarified and their blood was collected at days 1, 15, and 30 post-irradiation from heart puncture. Cholesterol level was estimated by the modified method of Roeschlau et al., 1974, using kit. Results: The cholesterol level was found almost constant in the control group (without any treatment) and increased in gamma radiation-treated group and decreased in only plant extract-treated group, whereas radiation-induced increased level of cholesterol was reduced by plant extract treatment in experimental animals (in plant extract with radiation-treated group), a normal level was achieved by day 30 post-treatment. Hence, O. elatior is beneficial to control radiation-induced blood cholesterol level. Conclusion: Radiation-induced side effects get lowered by herbal treatment and herbal products do not have their own side effects on body on their physical and chemical processes; thus, OEE is useful to manage blood cholesterol level as an edible part, it is easy to use as treatment and in my results OEE also support to maintain cholesterol level in serum of mice.

The present study aimed to investigate the ameliorative effects of fenugreek seeds and curcumin on hematotoxicity induced by nicotine in male albino rats. 30 male F-344/NHsd Fischer rats, weighing from 180 to 200g were used in the present study. The animals were divided into five groups (6 rats for each); Group I (control group), Group II (nicotine treated group), Group III (nicotine/fenugreek seeds co-administered), Group IV (nicotine/curcumin co-administered), and Group V (nicotine/curcumin& fenugreek seeds co-administered). At the end of the experimentation and 24 hours after the last dose, all animals were anaesthetized with ether and blood samples were collected by heart puncture. The samples were collected in clean dry tubes containing the anticoagulant substance EDTA and used for the hematological studies. The results showed that the animals treated with nicotine for 4 weeks showed a significant decrease in RBCs count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit value, MCH, MCHC, and platelets count, and increased MCV and WBCs count as compared to the control group. Co-administration of nicotine with fenugreek and/or curcumin caused improvement in all hematological parameters when compared with nicotine group. It can be concluded that nicotine had a strong effect on the hematological parameters. The ingestion of fenugreek and/or curcumin prevent the hematoxicity induced by nicotine. The current study suggests that fenugreek and curcumin may be useful in combating free radical-induced hematotoxicity induced by nicotine.

Objective: To determine the anti-hyperglycemic effects of interleukin-1 inhibitor (diacerein) in alloxan induced diabetic albino wistar rats. This experimental study was performed at the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Sindh Agriculture University, Tando Jam within 6 months from April 2016 to September 2016. Total of 160 adult Albino Wistar Rats having an average of 200 to 300 grams body weights were selected. Animals were categorized into 4 groups as; Group A (n=15): Control rats – receive 0.9% normal saline as placebo Experimental Groups Group B (n=15): Experimental Control (Diabetic rats) - Alloxan50 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneal. Group C (n=15): Diabetic rats + Diacerein (30 mg/kg/day) orally daily. Group D (n=15): Diabetic rats + Diacerein (50 mg/kg/day) orally daily. Animals were kept and treated as per the NIH Guideline for Use and Care of Laboratory Animals. Diabetes mellitus was induced via a single intraperitoneal injection of 50 milligram/kg alloxan monohydrated dissolved in aseptic 0.9% saline. After 72 hours, blood specimens were taken from the caudal vein of the rats and glucose level>200 mg/dL was taken as diabetes. Experimental rats were given diacerein approximately 30 and 50 mg orally for 6 weeks. At the completion of experiment the body weight was measured of each animal by electronic measuring balance and blood sample was taken from each animal of all groups to assess the blood glucose level and HbA1c level. Data were recorded via self-made proforma and analysis was done by using SPSS version 20. Results: Average body weight of Diabetic control (Group B) was 193.33±22.50 grams, which was lower in contrast to Diacerein treated group C 202.47±25.70 grams and significantly lower as compared to Diacerein treated group D as  212.6±23.43 grams. A significant increase in blood glucose levels 182.07±10.63 mg/dl was noted in the Diabetic control (Group B) compared to Diacerein treated group C (110.13± 8.54 mg/dl) and group D (85.87±8.41 mg/dl) (P=0.001). HbA1c was markedly raised in the Group B- diabetic controls, while diacerein treated diabetic rats (groups C and D) showed a significant decrease in HbA1c (P=0.001). Conclusion: It was concluded that Diacerein achieves the Euglycemic state by reducing the levels of blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in Alloxan-Induced diabetes mellitus in Wistar Albino Rats.
