Background: Anemia in pregnancy is an important public health problem in developing countries like India. Anemia results in poor pregnancy outcome and also affects fetal outcome. The present study was conducted to asses maternal and fetal outcome in relation anemia. Aim and objectives of the study was to determine incidence, risk factors and maternal-fetal outcome of anemia in the admitted pregnant women attending obstetrics and gyanecology department, shanakarcharya institute of medical sciences, Bhilai.Methods: This is retrospective observational study conducted among pregnant women admitted in labor room over a period of one year after getting approval from the institutional ethical committee.Results: Out of total 1503 delivery during study period 675 patients were found to be anaemic which gives incidence of 44.5%. Most the pregnant women were moderately anaemic i.e. 50.96% followed by mild (45.04%) and severe (4%) repectively. Among the pregnant women most common type of anaemia is Iron deficiency anaemia (69.65%) followed by Sickle cell anaemia (15.4%). In the present study,90.4% of subject received oral iron, 26.9% received parenteral iron and 19.4% received blood transfusion. Common maternal outcome related to anemia found to be low birth weight (25.2%) followed by premature delivery (22.96%) and fetal outcome in anemic mother in the form of preterm (22.9%) followed by NICU admission (14.37%) and FGR (8.6%).Conclusions: Anemia being one of the most important cause of poor feto maternal outcome should be treated preconceptionaly. There is a need of health education programmes and adequate intake of iron rich diet during pregnancy, to be strengthened for safe maternal and foetal outcomes.

Background: Diabetes is one of the largest global health emergencies of 21st century and Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most crucial illnesses complicating women of child-bearing age. The objectives of this study is to determine the maternal and fetal outcome of pregnancies complicated by maternal diabetes either GDM or pre-existing diabetes.Methods: An analysis of pregnant women was done retrospectively at KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and Medical Research Centre, Belgaum. 171 cases were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus in pregnancy. 162 cases developed GDM and 9 had pre-existing diabetes. Pregnant women who were found to be diabetic pre conceptionally or in the first trimester were classified as pre-existing diabetes. All pregnant women diagnosed with diabetes mellitus were studied and relevant maternal and fetal outcomes and complications were assessed.Results: There were171 diabetic women in this retrospective study out of which 94.7% had GDM and 5.26% had pre-existing diabetes. Rate of pre-eclampsia was 24.56%, preterm delivery was 17.54% and polyhydramnios was 15.20%. Rate of caesarean section were 57.30% and vaginal delivery was 45.06%. In fetal and neonatal complications, the rate of fetal macrosomia was 11.1%, hyperbilirubinemia 15.78%, respiratory distress syndrome 9.94%.Conclusions: Diabetes in pregnancy is associated with increased risks to the maternal and fetal complications. The aim of this study is to lay emphasis upon early detection, screening and timely management that will reduce the adverse outcomes in both mother and fetus. predicted.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic became an important public health problem affecting all age groups. The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical and laboratory findings of newborns born to mothers with COVID-19. Thirty pregnant women with COVID-19 were admitted to Turgut Ozal University Hospital for delivery. Fourteen pregnant women had at least one symptom associated with COVID-19. Positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results were seen in only 3 (9.7%) of 31 newborns. A statistically significant difference was observed between PCR-positive and PCR-negative newborns in terms of any adverse pregnancy outcomes. Neonatal lymphocyte count and partial arterial oxygen pressure were significantly lower in the PCR-positive group. Results were also compared according to the interval from the maternal diagnosis time to delivery. Hemoglobin and hematocrit levels in newborns born to mothers diagnosed more than 7 days before delivery were significantly lower. Neonates born to mothers with COVID-19 had mild clinical symptoms and favorable outcomes.

Introduction: Poor dental hygiene has been associated with various perinatal complications in studiesdone worldwide but few studies in Nepal have explored the knowledge of pregnant ladies regardingdental hygiene. The aim of the study was to know the knowledge and practices of pregnant womenregarding oral health in a tertiary care center in Nepal. Methods: A qualitative study was carried out in Nobel Medical College and Teaching Hospital fromJanuary 15, 2018 to June 15, 2018 after approval from the Institutional Review Committee of NobelMedical College. Convenience sampling was done. Fifty pregnant women admitted in antenatalward were interviewed regarding their knowledge of dental care in pregnancy, the common dentalproblems they faced and the treatment taken. A predesigned proforma was used and results wereanalyzed using SPSS version 17. Results: Twenty two (44%) patients reported dental problems during pregnancy. Bleeding gumswas seen in 7 (14%) and toothache in 7 (14%) were commonly reported dental problems. Forty seven(94%) patients acknowledged that routine dental care was needed for health, only 6 (12%) wereaware that poor dental health could affect baby weight. Oral health not seen as priority in 24 (48%)was the main barrier to seeking dental care in pregnancy followed by costs of treatment in 18 (36%)and safety concerns in pregnancy in 8 (16%) cases. Conclusions: Though dental problems were a common occurrence in pregnancy, utilization ofservices was low for the same. The participants reported significant barriers to obtaining dental careincluding lack of knowledge about the importance of maternal oral health and the treatment costs.

Objective: To determine the frequency and outcome in pregnant women with COVID-19 infection. Study Design: This is a observational cohort study. Setting: Study carried out at Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Civil Hospital, Dow University of health sciences Karachi, from July 2020 to November 2021. Materials & Methods:  The study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Karachi. Women having COVID-19 positive status during any stage of their pregnancy having antenatal visits in our hospital were included in our study. Maternal demographics, race, maternal outcome, and neonatal complications were noted on a self-made Performa. Statistical analysis was done by SPSS version 21 and descriptive statistics with frequencies were mainly calculated. Results: During the defined time of 14 months, we had 143 women visiting antenatal outpatient department and were tested positive for COVID-19. Majority of the women were tested for COVID-19 due to symptoms like fever, flu, cough and diarrhea. The mean age of women in our study was found to be 30 ± 6.7 years. The most frequent maternal outcome with SARSCOV-2 was preterm delivery. Out of 143, 27 cases had emergency lower segment C-section.PCR testing of neonates was carried out and 8.39% (n=12) neonates tested positive for SARSCOV-2.  Conclusion: Infection with Covid-19 during pregnancy is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Covid-19  infection can be transmitted to the fetus during pregnancy or childbirth. Neonatal has a high chance of being admitted to the ICU, and women also faces other complications of Covid 19, such as the risk of miscarriage and premature delivery.

Introduction:Cancer is an important public health problem in India, with 10 lakh new cases occurring every year in the year. Cancer pattern varies in different regions and depends on genetic, environmental, dietary, social and other factors. Aim and objectives: This study was undertaken to determine magnitude and pattern of cancer cases reporting in the hospital. Methodology: This was a hospital-based retrospective study undertaken in the Government Medical College Kathua. GMC, Kathua is one among st the ve new medical colleges established in Jammu & Kashmir. The records of cancer patients generated from 1st November 2018 to 1 November 2019 were analyzed. All the cancer cases who reported either for diagnosis in any of the hospital OPD or for the treatment (radiotherapy/ chemotherapy/ surgery) were included. Data was entered in the MS Excel for analysis Results: Out of total 272 patients registered, females accounted for 56.6% and males for 43.3%. Hindu patients were in majority (84.2%). Most of the cases (37.1%) were in the age group 60-80. Pattern of cancer was different in the two sexes. In males, maximum cases were of lung cancer and in females, Ca breast was the most common followed by the cervical cancer Conclusion: This hospital-based study indicates the cancer prole in Kathua district. Females were found to be more affected than that of males with majority of the cases in the late 40s age group. Rural area and urban area distribution was found to be almost similar.

Introduction: The study carried out among the pregnant women who had anemia during pregnancy with the objectives to determine their maternal outcome at private hospitals in Dhaka city. Materials and Methods: The total sample size was 110. Data was collected by interviewing the respondents with a structured pre-tested questionnaire. The study was conducted in pregnant women with anemia at or after 28 weeks of gestation and had delivered at Obstetrics Department of Ad-Din Barrister Rafique ul-Huq Hospital, Jurain and Bashundhara Ad-Din Medical College Hospital South Keranigonj. Results: Most of the respondents (38.2%) belonged to the age group between 16-20 years. The mean age was 23.74±5.127 years. Almost (49.1%) up to primary & (38.2%) were up to secondary/higher secondary level. Most of the respondents were homemaker (87.3%); Monthly income means was 19340.91±12459.647. Most (90.9%) of the respondents had received ANC and 79.1% respondent’s hemoglobin level was below 10 gm. /dl. Among them 90.9% of the respondent’s fetal outcome were healthy & alive baby. More than half (51.8%) of the respondent’s baby were _ 2.5 kg birth weight. Study also shows that 55.5% respondents had anemia after delivery, 28.2% had sickness and 22.7% were sulfured with complications after delivery. There was a significant relationship with low birth weights (LBW) to less high education. Conclusion: All women should be given advice regarding diet in pregnancy with details of foods rich in iron. Dietary changes alone are not sufficient to correct an existing iron deficiency in pregnancy and iron supplements are necessary. Medicine Today 2021 Vol.33(2): 102-107

Background: Anemia in pregnancy is a major health problem worldwide, especially in developing countries like India. Maternal and fetal outcomes are poor in pregnant patients with anemia. The most important cause of anemia is iron deficiency anemia which can be prevented by early oral iron supplementation.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the department of obstetrics and gynecology of our tertiary care teaching institution for a period of one year. 1290 pregnant women coming to the antenatal OPD were screened for anemia and 490 women. Patients who were not anemic were excluded. 800 patients were enrolled in the study. Each patient was interviewed using a structured interview schedule and the data obtained was analyzed.Results: The percentage of anemia in pregnant women was 62% in our study of which 40% were mildly anemic, 55% were moderately anemic and 5% were severely anemic. Maximum number of anemic women -mild, moderate and severe was seen in the age group 20-24 years. Mild and severe anemia was seen more in the secondary educated women. Maximum percentage of anemia was seen in the lower socio-economic status followed by middle and was lowest in the higher socio-economic status group. Prevalence of anemia was almost equal in primigravida and multigravidas (around 50%) but 80% of severely anemic patients were multigravida. Almost 68% took iron and folic acid tablets regularly.Conclusions: Treating anemia in pregnant women will go a long way in improving maternal and fetal outcome. Hence a future healthy younger generation can be produced. Iron tablets can be distributed at school to young girls to prevent anemia in future women.

Objective Despite the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommending universal hepatitis C virus (HCV) screening in pregnancy Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) continue to endorse risk-based screening for HCV in pregnancy. We hypothesized that universal screening is associated with increased HCV diagnosis and postpartum linkage to HCV care compared with risk-based screening. Study Design This retrospective cohort study included pregnant women screened for HCV at a single tertiary-care center. We defined two cohorts: women managed with risk-based (January 2014–October 2016) or universal HCV screening (November 2016–December 2018). Screening was performed with ELISA antibody testing and viremia confirmed with HCV ribonucleic acid (RNA) polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Primary outcomes were the rate of HCV screen positivity and postpartum linkage to care. Results From 2014 to 2018, 16,489 women delivered at our institution, of whom 166 screened positive for HCV. A total of 7,039 pregnant women were screened for HCV: 266 with risk-based and 6,773 with universal screening; 29% (76/266) were positive HCV antibody screening (HCVAb + ) in the risk-based cohort and 1.3% (90/6,773) in the universal cohort. HCVAb+ women in the risk-based cohort were more likely to have a positive drug screen. Only 69% (62/90) of HCVAb+ women in the universal cohort met the criteria for risk-based testing. Of the remaining 28 women, 6 (21%) had active viremia (HCV RNA+). Of the 166 HCVAb+ women, 64% (103/166) were HCV RNA+—51 of 266 (19%) in the risk-based and 52 of 6,773 (0.8%) in the universal cohort. Of HCVAb+ women, 75% (125/166) were referred postpartum for HCV evaluation and 27% (34/125) were linked to care. Only 9% (10/103) of women with viremia initiated treatment within 1 year of delivery. Conclusion Universal HCV screening in pregnancy identified an additional 31% of HCVAb+ women compared with risk-based screening. Given low rates of HCV follow-up and treatment regardless of screening modality, further studies are needed to address barriers to postpartum linkage to care. Key Points

Background: Anemia in pregnancy is an important public health problem worldwide. Despite the efforts of government and health bodies, maternal anemia continues to be a common cause of morbidity and mortality. This suggests that other factors contribute to the high prevalence of anemia in pregnancy despite the intervention efforts. Objective: This study sought to determine the prevalence and anemic status of pregnant women at booking, to assess their knowledge of anemia and attitude to anemia prevention measures. And to determine associated risk factors for anemia and if there is a correlation between anemic status and level of knowledge/attitude to anemia prevention Methodology: An institutional-based, cross-sectional study was carried out. 322 consenting participants between 18-48 years were interviewed at booking using a structured questionnaire. Information on socio-demographic characteristics; their knowledge on causes, symptoms, prevention, and complications of anemia in pregnancy; and information on attitude towards anemia prevention strategies were collected. The PCV and HIV results of the women were retrieved. Data were entered into an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed with SPSS version 20. Associations between different variables were determined using Fisher's exact test or Chi-square test, as appropriate, and logistic regression was used to test statistical significance at P<0.05. Results: Their mean age±SD was 31.65±4.72 years and the median parity was 1.Of the 322 women, 194(60.2%) were anemic, with 186(57.8%) having mild anemia. There was no significant association between anemia and age, marital status, education, employment, parity, pregnancy interval and socio-economic status, but there was a significant association between gestational age and HIV status, with only gestational age remaining significant after logistic regression. The relationship between anemia and knowledge and attitude was not significant, but the higher educational status was significantly related to knowledge of anemia and its prevention. Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia in this study was high. Despite good knowledge and attitude to anemia prevention, late booking for ANC caused a significant association with the occurrence of anemia. Efforts are needed to encourage early booking and early commencement of iron and folic acid supplements.

Background: Anemia in pregnancy is one of the most common nutritional deficiency disorders affecting the pregnant women in the developing countries. The aim of our study was to understand the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women, and factors associated with anemia.Methods: It was a retrospective record based study conducted in pregnant women, attending antenatal clinic and emergency in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Integral Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Luck now, Uttar Pradesh, India. Data from 422 pregnant women regarding pregnancy were collected from 1st January 2018 to 30th June 2018 by referring the records.Results: Present study included 422 pregnant females in first, second and third trimester. In the present study, majority of the pregnant women belonged to the age group of 20-25 years (49.5%) followed by age group of 26-30 years (35.5%). The prevalence rate of anemia was found to be 57.6%, with moderate anemia being the most common (44.8%). Higher proportion of anemia was found in third trimester (75.3%) followed by second trimester (16.5%).Conclusions: High prevalence (57.6%) of anemia was observed in pregnant women. We are far away from achieving our target of Anemia Mukht Bharat by 2022. There is need to create awareness among females regarding ANC visits, birth spacing and iron and folic acid supplementation during pregnancy.
