The semantic and pragmatic potential of statements of refusal to communicate allows shedding light on the peculiarities of the phenomenon of silence, identifying its varieties, the specifics of manifestation in the Russian linguistic picture of the world and analyzing the functionality as part of a literary text. The concept of “refusal to communicate” is a broader phenomenon than the actual speech genre of refusal, since refusal as such implies a negative reaction only to initial motivational responses, while refusal of communication can become both a reaction to any statement or not be reactive at all, that is, to be the initial remark in the dialogue. The peculiarity of statements with the semantics of silence is manifested in the fact that their illocutionary goal is the impossibility or unwillingness to continue communication and is achieved using various linguistic means, first of all, lexemes denoting the speaking process, as well as modal modifiers expressing the reason for such speech behavior. The differences between speech genres, which are based on rejection, lie in the very object of rejection, in what the speaker rejects. In the Russian linguistic picture of the world, silence is characterized by the fact that it is a communicative action, it consists not in the absence of speech, but in the transmission of information in a non-verbal way. In this case, it is called communicatively meaningful silence. The analysis of the lexical structure of E. Vodolazkin’s novel “Laure” made it possible to identify important fragments of the text associated with silence, to obtain information about the author’s worldview and his attitude to the phenomenon of silence.

Концепт рассматривается как факт культуры и формирует систему знаний человека о мире, он позволяет нам конкретизировать наиболее характерные признаки изучаемой нами культуры. Цель данной статьи - выявление значимости лингвокультурного концепта «жизнелюбие» для понимания индивидуальной картины мира автора. Задача исследования состоит в том, чтобы описать и проанализировать лингвистические средства, которые наполняют один из характерных для греческой культуры концептов, на основе художественного текста, так как художественный текст предлагает авторские интерпретации ключевых понятий, составляющих национальную картину мира. Актуальность данного исследования определяется необходимостью выявить значимость лингвистических и этноспецифических особенностей в изучении поведенческих характеристик народа и греческого менталитета в ходе анализа языковых единиц и сопутствующих культурологических факторов, наполняющих концепт «жизнелюбие» в индивидуальной авторской картине мира. В статье рассматриваются примеры и из художественного текста «Грек Зорба» греческого классика Никоса Казандзакиса, анализируются языковые средства выражения указанного концепта. Содержание данного текста насыщено культурными, историческими и географическими понятиями и характеристиками, что позволило нам взять его за основу исследования культуры и менталитета Греции. В процессе изучения материала, а именно греческого художественного текста, мы применили методы эмпирического и теоретического исследования. Также использовались компонентный и контекстуальный методы изучения. В данном исследовании отмечается влияние концепта на языковую личность, так как языковая личность является собирательным образом представителя определенных культурно-языковых ценностей. Специфика языковой картины мира и идиолекта характеризует языковую личность автора. The concept is considered as a fact of culture and forms a system of human knowledge about the world, it allows us to reveal the most characteristic features of the Greek culture we are studying. The aim of this article is to identify the significance of the linguistic-cultural concept «Love of life» to understand the writer’s individual picture of the world. The objective of the study is to characterize the linguistic means that form one of the basic concepts of the Greek worldview based on the literary text, since the literary text shows author’s interpretations of key concepts that make up the national picture of the world. While studying this topic and analyzing the language units considered in the article, we were able to represent the relevance of the concept «Love of life» and related cultural factors to understand the author’s picture of the world, and this also allowed us to demonstrate the importance of linguistic and ethno-specific features in the study of the behavioral characteristics and Greek mentality. The article discusses the examples from the literary text «Zorba the Greek» by the Greek classic Nikos Kazantzakis and analyzes the linguistic means of expression. The content of this text is saturated with cultural, historical and geographical characteristics, which allowed us to consider it as a basis for studying the culture and mentality of Greece. In the direct study of textual material, empirical and theoretical research methods were used: analysis, synthesis, comparison, as well as component and contextual methods of study. The article underlines the influence of the concept on the linguistic personality formation, as we know the linguistic personality is a generalized image of the storage of cultural and linguistic values. The author’s linguistic personality is characterized by the specificity of his linguistic worldview and vocabulary.

The article encompasses the scrutiny of the author’s individual world picture representation in the literary text. The world picture of the author defines his/her modality, positive-negative attitude to the realities of the world or the characters and events in the literary text. Of great importance to the research is conditioned by the fact that there are particular linguistic means which illustrate the author’s image either explicitly or implicitly. Specifically, concepts, descriptive contexts and symbols are investigated within the scope of the research as the most frequently used linguistic means in revealing the author’s worldview. Additionally, the article presents the analysis of the literary texts to support the theories standing behind the topic.

The paper explores suggestiveness in a communicative system of “The Lay of Igor’s Campaign” including the analysis of the literary term “suggestion”, which characterizes poetic images and plots, literary techniques and motives. The suggestive image in literature makes the reader’s imagination work, poetically influencing him. The suggestiveness comes as a type of speech act in a communicative model of literary text. In the communication system of “The Lay of Igor’s Campaign”, the phenomenon of suggestiveness allows us to understand the relationship between the characters. In the monument under study performative-rhetorical speech genres of Christian discourse provide suggestiveness of the communicative phenomenon. Suggestiveness is not limited to the emotional “charging” of the text and hypnotic suggestion. Here the performative suggestion carries an ontological function of the ritual-magic word. Performative suggestion served as a communicative revelation involving the medieval addressee in an actual communicative event. Christological constructions and ecclesiastical pathos, as well as the end of the work concluding with a rhetorical formula “Amen” once again indicate that the rhetorical structure of the text is of a religious and magical nature. Since “The Lay of Igor’s Campaign” has a unique and complex communicative system, each group of poetic legends is organized in accordance with its form of expression and functions in a general structure of the author’s poetic world allowing his thoughts to penetrate the world of intention in the form of a plan.

This paper aims to analyze the metaphorical meaning of phytonyms in Russian and Italian languages and the Russian-Italian version of Shalamov’s literary text. After analyzing the author’s style, we examined the thematic group of phytonyms and their use in the “Kolyma tales.” We divided trees into two categories: 1. plants - the main characters represented by a system of metaphors; 2. plants occurring once or twice in the tales and in a neutral way (even having significant meanings in the Russian culture). The phytometaphor of the stlanik (dwarf cedar), from the first category, is a leitmotif in almost all Shalamov’s works, especially in the “Kolyma tales” and in the “Kolyma notebooks,” where the phytonym has a complex symbolic meaning characteristic of the word tree in general (life, green, wood) but also linked to the author’s view of the world. In Shalamov’s works, the tree reflects not only the picture of the northern nature but also takes on special meanings more related to the prisoner and his physical and psychological characteristics. Thanks to Shalamov, the lexeme stlanik was introduced into the Russian linguistic view of the world. Also, the analysis of the adequate interpretation of this keyword in the translations of the “Kolyma tales” into Italian revealed that when the translation contains a description of parts of this phytonym, for example, branches, the metaphor of the original text is sometimes lost in the translation.

This article is devoted to the description of the linguistic means by which the author of a popular science article introduces into it the position of an “inexperienced reader”. Six popular science articles on linguistic topics were used as a source of material for the research. With the methods of studies of reference, semantic syntax and poetics of a literary text, the techniques of introducing an ordinary worldview of the “invisible opponent” of the author-scientist (or a knowledgeable journalist) were analyzed, in which the author represents a potential inexperienced reader of the article. As a result of the study, it was found that the authors use various means of implicitness, including presuppositions, implicit change of point of view, games with the reference of pronouns and nouns, in order to solve a complex collision of the “addressee factor”: criticizing the views that form the reader's everyday picture of the world, do not present explicit the reader himself as his opponent.

Abstract: The world picture in a literary text is created by linguistic means, while it reflects the individual picture of the world in the mind of the writer and is embodied in the selection of elements of the content of the work of art; the selection of the language means used; in the individual use of figurative means. The artistic picture of the world is a secondary, mediated the world picture, and it is mediated twice - by language and individually - by the author's conceptual picture of the world. The article is devoted to the study of such a speech genre as a request, which is actively used in interpersonal religious communication. The material for the study was the prayers, psalms of King David and the Book of Proverbs of Solomon, which are based on this form of communication. The study shows that the request belongs to the imperative speech genres, is an independent type of motivation, and has a set of specific properties. The specific situation of communication determines the choice of language forms of expression of the semantics of the request, and the addresser's intentions, which are implemented in it, make it possible to distinguish several types of requests. Statements have a spiritual component and are dialogical in nature. Their context directs the addressee to perform a post-communicative action, which is directly related to the addresser's desire to satisfy the necessary request. The paper uses a communicative-pragmatic approach, which allows us to explore the speech genre, taking into account all possible language means, special properties, aimed at implementing the semantics of the request in a communication situation. The results of the study are important for understanding the essence of religious communication.

The present study featured the image of a TV hostess in such genres as chat interview and portrait interview. The speech genre is a factor that affects the linguistic image of a media personality. The linguistic image explicates various linguistic means used by TV hostesses to achieve the main goal of the speech genre. The research objective was to demonstrate the interrelation between the TV hostess image and the chat / portrait interview speech genres. The study involved the descriptive method, the qualitative and quantitative content analysis, and the discourse analysis. The linguistic image was analyzed at four levels. Each level revealed units that served as markers of the linguistic image of a TV hostess during chat and portrait interviews. The research results can be applied in theoretical and practical courses of media discourse theory, as well as in special courses of media linguistics, linguistic imagology, and communicative genreology. Further research is required to identify the nonverbal means of the image of a TV hostess in these speech genres.

All the narrators and characters in J. Sheridan Le Fanu's In a Glass Darkly are unreliable impostors. As the title suggests, this is also the case with Arthur Machen's The Three Impostors, which similarly presents a virtual matryoshka of unreliability through a series of impostors. Both texts effect this systematic insistence on social constructedness by using and undermining the specific context of the male homosocial world. What served as the cure-all in the world of Pickwick – the homosocial bond – has here been exported, exposed, and proven flawed. The gothic is out in the open now, and the feared ghost resides without and within the group. The inability of anyone to interpret its signs, communicate its meaning, and rely on one's friends to talk one through it is the horror that cannot be overcome. Part of a larger project on the nineteenth-century ‘tales novel’ that treats the more heterogeneric and less heteronormative Victorian novel, this article examines how In a Glass Darkly and The Three Impostors blur the clear-cut gender division articulated in prior masculine presentations like The Pickwick Papers and feminine reinterpretations such as Cranford. These later texts challenge binaries of sex, speech, genre, and mode in enacting the previously articulated masculine and feminine simultaneously.

This article is aimed at presenting a methodology for the conceptual analysis of poetic texts based on their lexical structure using the theory of communicative stylistics. The lexical structure of the literary text is considered to be a means of aсquainting the reader with the values manifested therein. The study of values intertwined within written works is particularly significant for the development of an axiological approach to teaching the Russian language. This article proposes a method for a sequential analysis of the lexical structure of a poetic text, which can be used at Russian language lessons.
