This study explored the practices of indigenous knowledge-based education. This issue is important to examine because the effects of liberalization and globalization have changed the policy framework of the education sector. This study used qualitative methods with a case study approach. Snowball sampling was used to recruit participants, and data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis to understand the educational practices at Sanggar Alam (Salam) Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Salam was an ideal object of research because it has an unusual model of education, on an environmental and cultural basis. Data were interpretated based on the approach of Creswell in order to capture the natural setting. The method of Yin (2003) was applied to verify the data validity. The results of this study indicated that: 1) Salam has an unusual learning model which refers to the education principle initiated by Ki Hadjar Dewantara, that education is to liberate; this is reflected in the teacher’s role as facilitator, and in the learning process which maximizes the environment; and 2) Salam education is built by adopting research-based learning to eliminate irrelevant traditional learning models. These findings indicate that Salam has applied the principles of indigenous knowledge-based education in a concrete way, to guide students to grow without losing their roots. Keywords: freedom education; indigenous based education; Ki Hadjar Dewantara; Sanggar Alam (Salam)

In regional Australia there is a growing interest and investment in community capacity building and this is beginning to be formalised in a desire to integrate information communications technology opportunities with other forms of community development. This paper explores the opportunity for greater social integration based on the formation of community-based information communication technology (ICT) driven organizations, using a case study approach.  It is suggested that whether disseminating information, collaborating with other communities, assisting the development of new industries, or simply by sharing the lessons learned along the way, community-based IT can assist and support a community’s economic and social development.  Further, the paper supports the view that, where understanding and developing new forms of information technology through community informatics is accepted as an integral part of such development, communities will not just ‘improve the old’ but will more radically restructure themselves towards a knowledge-based future. The case study that underpins these observations is that of the development of Bay Connect, a community-based Internet development and training project, begun in Hervey Bay with Networking the Nation support, and which is now expanding into the adjacent Maryborough and surrounding Shires. It is also supported by the University of Southern Queensland’s Wide Bay and has an emergent role in supporting new and existing IT businesses, Bay Connect and the Hervey Bay City Council, in the creation and nurturing of an IT skills base within the region.

This chapter presents an Australian case study of the planning and implementation of a new university town (Circa, 1994). It aims to evaluate the effectiveness of normative urban/regional planning practice applied locally to create a regional knowledge hub. The evaluation process surveys key stakeholders’ perceptions about the town’s development using traditional methods (e.g.: SWOT) and alternative methods from the Futures Studies field (Causal Layered Analysis). The case study shows that a regional governance framework with collaborative partnerships focused on place management and infrastructure delivery is needed to realise Sippy Downs’ vision as a knowledge hub. It also demonstrates that a holistic policy framework for the town’s development is also needed to leverage the drivers of successful knowledge-based urban development.

The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed on us not only e-learning with higher education providers, but also triggered considerable difficulties in organization internships. Institutions and enterprises that used to be eager to take interns have refused to do so. In these conditions, the key objective for the Faculty of Management at the UTP University in Bydgoszcz was to organize e-internships to ensure a working environment similar to the real working conditions of the accounting department. A new internship program was developed that implemented the assumptions of active learning, by virtue of the case study approach, computer-based learning environments, and a comprehensive task simulating the work of the accounting department in the form of a multi-step project. The key objective of this article is to present the results of research in the form of a survey on how the students majoring in Finance and Accounting perceive the proposed internship method. The results show that an internship in the form of e-learning with the proposed education methods is appreciated by the students. E-learning does not necessarily have to be less effective than traditional learning. The use of platforms and the selecting of adequate methods can enhance the activity of students, supporting self-education and independent task performance.
