The present study was conducted to find out the nutritional values of Faidherbia albida (Acacia albida) seeds and pulp to be used as components in livestock feeds. The samples were randomly collected from various trees during the period of January to February. The samples were separated, milled and analysed for proximate components and mineral elements using standard methods of the AOAC. Proximate analysis results showed that the concentrations of tested parameters in the seed and the pulp respectively on % dry matter were: dry matter (90.0 + 0.4; 93.3 + 0.2), ash (3.3 + 0.1; 6.7 + 0.1), crude protein (20.6 + 1.2; 19.5 + 0.4), crude lipid (13.3 + 0.1; 3.3 + 0.1), crude fibre (6.7 + 0.1; 13.3 + 0.2), and available carbohydrate (46.1 + 0.1; 50.53 + 0.7). The results indicated that the contents of dry matter, ash, crude fibre and available carbohydrate were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the pulp compared to the seed while the crude lipid values, however, were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in seeds compared to pulp. Crude protein values did not differ significantly (p > 0.05) between treatment means of seeds and pulp. The estimated energy value was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the seed (1,682 kJ/100g) compared to pulp (1,363kJ/100g). The results for the mineral analysis indicate that the seeds and pulp contain appreciable concentrations (mg/100g) of Ca (136.6 + 5.0; 55.0 + 5.0); Mg (135.0 + 2.0 + 5.0; 84.7 + 3.0); P (26.6 + 0.9; 29.6 + 0.7); K (144.5 + 0.2; 88.8 + 0.1); Na (12.5 + 0.1; 6.8 + 0.1); Fe (6.2 + 0.2; 8.8 + 0.3); Cu (5.8 + 0.1; 2.5 + 0.1) and Zn (8.0 + 0.1; 3.0 + 0.1). Mineral elements in seed are significantly higher (p < 0.05) compared to that of pulp in most cases. From the results it can be inferred that the seed and pulp of F. albida could be an important source of feed ingredient for livestock if properly harnessed.

The present study was aimed to determine the variations in nutritional qualities of 15 mutant lines and two landraces of ginger (Zingiber officinale). Fifteen (15) gamma (γ)-ray induced mutants lines and two landraces of ginger were planted in 2017 early cropping season in the Teaching and Research Farm, Department of Crop Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Wildlife Resources Management, University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria. To evaluate the nutritional qualities of these seventeen ginger genotypes at maturity, proximate analysis was carried out in the Biochemistry Laboratory of the National Root Crop Research Institute Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria. Using standard and official protocols of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC). Results showed that the ginger lines varied significantly (P < 0.01) in all their proximate attributes. The moisture content ranged from 10.13% (UG1) to 12.95% (UG2). Mean dry matter was 88.89%; UG1 and UG2 had the highest (89.89%) and lowest (87.05%) dry matter content, respectively. Mean crude protein was 7.74%; UG2-9-01 and UG2-11-03 had the highest (8.25%) and lowest (7.29%) crude protein respectively. UG1-5-38 and UG1-5-22 had the highest (8.12%) and lowest (6.41%) crude fibre content respectively. The oleoresin content ranged from (6.25%) in UG2-9-01 to (9.09%) in UG1-11-07. UG1-5-04 and UG1-5-22 had the highest (2.88%) and lowest (2.22%) ash content respectively. UG2-9-01 had the highest carbohydrate content of (65.10%). While UG1-5-52 had the lowest (61.27%) The result showed that the ginger lines used in this study had high mean carbohydrate (62.85%) and protein (7.74%) contents as such can be used as supplementary sources of these nutrients for human and livestock. UG1-7-24, UG1-11-07 and UG1-5-18 with high oleoresin contents of 9.11%, 9.09% and 9.05% respectively are recommended to ginger breeders as useful genotypes for improving other ginger lines through micropropagation techniques especially when breeding for oleoresin quality, which is an important quality of ginger. In conclusion, further evaluation and testing of these ginger lines is recommended.

Medicinal plants are abundant in phytochemicals that has significant therapeutic effects. They are relatively cheap, effective and safe in prolong use. This experiment was carried out to investigate the phyto-nutritional profile of broom weed (Sida acuta) leaf extract. Proximate analysis Sida acuta leaf indicated the presence of dry matter (91.88 %), crude protein (18.01 %), ash (9.73 %), crude fibre (6.24 %), ether extract (1.77 %) and energy (2760 Kcal/kg). Phytochemical screening of the extract revealed the presence of condensed tannins, hydrolysable tannins, flavonoids, saponins, phenols, oxalate, phytate, alkaloids, terpenoids and glycosides at 0.82 %, 2.02 %, 4.25 %, 0.20 %, 0.17 %, 0.05 %, 0.23 %, 0.22 %, 0.95 % and 0.02 % respectively and the vitamin constituents are thiamine (0.33 mg/100g), ascorbic acid (30.17 mg/100g), riboflavin (0.05 mg/100g), β-carotene (0.79 mg/100g) and niacin (0.41 mg/100g). Mineral analysis showed that it contained calcium (127.6 mg/100g), phosphorus (78.6 mg/100g), potassium (31.6 mg/100g), magnesium (102.1 mg/100g), iron (2.14 mg/100g), manganese (0.60 mg/100g), copper (0.04 mg/100g) and zinc (1.75 mg/100g). Result on amino acid composition showed that they contained lysine (2.11 mg/100g), arginine (1.77 mg/100g), aspartic acid (2.13 mg/100g), threonine (1.85 mg/100g), histidine (4.71 mg/100g), serine (2.03 mg/100g), glycine (1.05 mg/100g), alanine (3.31 mg/100g), cystine (5.06 mg/100g), valine (0.88 mg/100g), leucine (2.04 mg/100g), phenyalanine (4.72 mg/100g), tyrosine (3.51 mg/100g), isoleucine (2.84 mg/100g), methionine (0.85 mg/100g) and proline (1.05 mg/100g). It was concluded that  Sida acuta leaf extract is rich in various nutrients and phytochemicals conferring it the ability to perform multiple biological activities and as a natural alternative to antibiotics.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate minerals and nutrient composition of young coconut husk silage fermented with rice bran at different concentrations. The study was conducted for seven months in the Laboratory of Feed Technology of State Agricultural Polytechnic of Kupang. A completely randomised design was employed with four treatments and five replicates. The treatments were young coconut husk without rice bran (P0) or the husk plus 4% (P1), 8% (P2) or 12% (P3) of rice bran out of the silage total weight. Variables measured were dry matter, ash, crude protein, crude lipid, crude fibre, Calcium, Potassium and Phosphorus. Analysis of variance showed that rice bran significantly (P<0.01) affects all variables measured. The Duncan’s range multiple test showed that 12% and 4% were the best rice bran concentrations to increase nutrient content and minerals of the silage, respectively. It can be concluded that adding 12% of rice bran to young coconut husk silage increased dry matter, ash, crude protein and crude lipid but reduced Calcium and Potassium. Crude fibre and Phosphorus increased at the inclusion of 8% rice bran.  Key words: Nutrient; Minerals; Rice bran; Silage; Young coconut husk.   Abstrak Penelitian yang bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi komposisi nutrien dan mineral silase sabut kelapa muda pada berbagai level penambahan dedak padi, telah dilaksanakan selama 7 bulan di Laboratorium Teknologi Pakan Politeknik Pertanian Negeri Kupang, dengan menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap dengan 4 perlakuan yang terdiri dari P0 : sabut kelapa muda tanpa dedak padi, P1 : sabut kelapa muda + 4% dedak padi, P2 : sabut kelapa muda + 8% dedak padi, P3 : sabut kelapa muda + 12% dedak padi dengan 5 kali ulangan. Variabel yang diukur adalah kadar bahan kering (BK), kadar abu, kadar protein kasar (PK), kadar lemak kasar (LK), kadar serat kasar (SK), kadar kalsium (Ca), kadar kalium, dan kadar fosfor. Analisis ragam menunjukkan bahwa level dedak padi yang berbeda berpengaruh sangat nyata (P<0,01) terhadap kadar BK, kadar abu, kadar PK, kadar LK, kadar SK, kadar Ca, kadar K, dan kadar P. Uji Duncan memperlihatkan level dedak 12% menghasilkan nutrien terbaik dan level 4% menghasilkan kadar mineral terbaik. Disimpulkan bahwa penambahan level dedak padi hingga 12% dapat meningkatkan kadar BK, kadar abu, kadar PK, dan kadar LK. tetapi menurunkan kadar Ca dan kadar K. Kadar SK  dan P meningkat hingga penambahan level dedak padi 8%. Kata kunci : Dedak padi; Kadar nutrient; Kadar mineral; Silase; Sabut kelapa muda.

Salad is a dish of raw vegetables with or without dressing. The study aimed to determine the vegetable salad's proximate, minerals, and daily percentage value without dressing to the dietary regimen. Vegetable salads without dressing were purchased and analysed to evaluate proximate and minerals analysis based on the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC). The results revealed that vegetable salad without dressing contained 83.20 ± 0.10 moisture content, 16.80 ± 0.01 dry matter, 1.73 ± 0.14, 3.01 ± 0.40, 0.87 ± 0.01, 0.73 ± 0.00, and 10.50 ± 0.12g/100g as in crude lipid, crude protein, crude fibre, ash content, and carbohydrate respectively. Potassium (K), sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) were 464 ± 3.56, 236 ± 2.45, 101 ± 1.63, 124 ± 1.63, 58 ± 0.81, 0.49 ± 0.06, 0.88 ± 0.01, 0.84 ± 0.02, and 0.21 ± 0.01 mg/100g respectively. The percent calorific values from carbohydrates, fat, and protein could help to reduce the risk of chronic disease. The salad is a good source of magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and copper. The study showed that the salad is good for a healthy body, hypertensive and obese patients.

Beach Bean is a species of flowering plant of the genus Canavalia in the pea family, Fabaceae that has a pantropical distribution. This study aims to determine the phytochemical and neutraceutical activities of Beach Bean grown in Anyigba area of Kogi State, Nigeria. Beach Bean (Canavalia rosea) leaf and seed were dried in the powder form, then the leaves and seeds of 200 grams each were extracted in 2000 ml of aqueous. The macerated for 48 hours and filtered using filter paper and filter pump. The sample was concentrated using a rotary evaporator and freeze-dried to powdered form. The filtrate obtained from each extraction was tested for alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, phenol, fat and oils, steroids, tannins and glycosides. The proximate analysis of the samples was carried out for moisture content, ash, fat, crude protein, crude fibre after drying the samples of Beach Bean at room temperature. Vitamins A, E, B and C were determined and the mineral elements were determined by the dry ash extraction. The phytochemical components of secondary metabolites of the extracts from the obtained result, anthraquinone and tannins (leaf) were not present in the extracts. The proximate composition of nutritive value of seed and leaves has a higher value of crude protein of amounting to 50.84% while the leaves have crude protein value of 30.59%, carbohydrates percentage of the leaves was higher (40.60%) while the seed has 26.98%. The percentage of ash content which is an indicator of the quality of mineral nutrients present has a value of 8.45% in leaves and 2.53% in the seed. By implication, the leaves are richer in mineral nutrients/elements than the seeds. This research classified a large number of nutraceuticals available from various sources and their significant uses in the treatment of various diseases such as Cardiovascular, Obesity, Diabetes, Cancer, Alzheimer, Parkinson, Inflammatory, and Allergy. These are cured by herbal nutraceuticals or food herb dietary condiment for phytotherapeutic purposes.

Altogether 55 fodder trees were collected with their local information from Sunsari district, Nepal. Among them, the leaves of 19 fodder trees were analyzed for dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, crude fibre, N-free extract, total ash and mineral contents (K, Ca, and P). Regarding fodder quality, local information and chemical composition do not match for all plants. On the basis of chemical composition 12 fodder trees were recognized as good fodders. On the basis of both local information and chemical composition following trees were assessed as very good fodders: Artocarpus heterophyllus, Bauhinia variegata, Ficus cunia, F. glomerata and F. lacor. The proximate analysis of ammoniated rice straw added with rumen contentABSTRACT. A study about proximate analysis on ammoniated rice straw that added with rumen content was conducted at Agricultural Faculty, Syiah Kuala University. Field research was done at Experimental Farm Animal Husbandry Department, followed by proximate analysis done in the Animal Feed Laboratory. Factorial completely randomizes design with four replications was applied in this research. Storage time (4 Level) was the first factor analyzed, and the second one was the rumen content level (4 level). Analysis of variance was used to determine the differences among treatments. When it occurred, it followed by working on the Duncan Multiple Test to find the difference of each treatment. Data record were taken from the percentages of dry matter, crude fiber, crude protein, crude lipid, and ash. Rice straw and rumen content were analyzed before treatments were applied. The study result indicated that the storage times of ammoniated rice straw that were given rumen content decreased the percentage of crude fiber and dry matter in highly significant different (P0.01). On the other hand, the percentage of ash and crude protein were increased also in highly significant difference (P0.01). Meanwhile, the percentage of crude lipid due to both storage time and rumen content added factors showed highly significant different (P0.01). The storage time up to fourth week, and adding of 25 % rumen content to ammoniated rice straw, can increase it nutritive value. It was concluded that generally the quality of product resulted from this research was very good. Therefore it is acceptable to provide to animals.

Mineral and proximate analysis of Crescentia Cujete (Ugbugba) leaves were examined using the methods recommended by Association of Official Analytical Chemist (AOAC). The leaves contained 51.00+1.05% moisture, 2.30+0.2% ash, crude protein 51.00+0.43%, crude lipid 1.90+0.08%, crude fibre 4.00+0.12%, carbohydrates 40.40+0.02%. The minerals ranges from mg/g dry weight K(30.02 + 0.03), Na (12.10+0.32), Ca (60.00+0.01). Mg (361.42+0.01), P(14.19 +0.42), Mn (6.32 + 1.01), Fe (2.43+0.01), Cu (13.04+0.10), Zn (1.20+0.43), Na/K (0.40) and Ca/P (2.14), K, Mg, Ca and Fe were found in significant concentrations. The findings showed that Crescentia Cujete leaves are source of nutrients for edible purpose, a good Na/K ratio for lowering blood pressure.

SummaryDigestibility of the palatable indigenous shrub Grewia carpinifolia was investigated. Digestion coefficients (%) were—organic matter 70, dry matter 70, crude protein 78, crude fibre 54, nitrogenfree extract 81, ether extract 13 and ash 52. Calculated nutritive values were—starch equivalent 27.3 and digestible crude protein 5.0, giving a nutritive ratio of about 1 : 5. The material used was moderately young.

Smoke-drying Clarias gariepinus (catfish) provides animal protein and a source of livelihood in Lagos, Nigeria. Changes occurring to seasonal and mineral compositions of smoke-dried catfish using local Traditional Drum Kiln (TDK) and a newly constructed Eco-Friendly Kiln (EFK) fitted with a flame, drying and electronic components was carried out in this study. The smoke-drying process was carried out in both wet and dry seasons and smoke-dried catfish samples stored at ambient and adjusted refrigerated temperatures of 28 and 4 0C. The smoke-drying procedure was  standardized at 60 - 80 0C and kiln lasted 24 ± 3 hours. Moisture content results showed a significant difference when the catfish samples were smoke-dried using TDK and EFK and stored in ambient and controlled temperatures in both wet and dry seasons while crude protein, lipid, ash and crude fibre values were significantly different when stored only in dry season. Mineral elements phosphorus, sodium, copper, magnesium and iron showed a significant difference when stored at both temperatures and seasons using both kilns. Mineral elements were found to be most stable in smoke-dried catfish samples when stored at controlled temperatures. This work proved that standardizing smoke-drying process using both kilns resulted in good quality smoke-dried catfish but showed that higher biochemical values were obtained when EFK is used.
