This paper is part of an investigation linked to the Post-graduate Education Program in the Federal University of Mato Grosso, research on Social Movements, Politics and Popular Education, Cuiabá, with the support of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). Its purpose is to analyze the pedagogical and educational initiatives developed in rural schools, under the coordination of the Movement of Landless Workers (MST) in Mato Grosso, as a process of resistance to coloniality and its mechanisms of power. This is a qualitative research, developed with the teachers and directors of the Florestan Fernandes National School located in the October 12’s Settlement. The research tools used were: semi structured interviews, participant observation and field journals. Based on the interviews, it can be seen that the MST’s schools are constituted from an anti-hegemonic conception, with different pedagogical practices. The field journals analysis reveals that this school implements the philosophical and pedagogical principles of the Movement, although financed by the public sector.

Background Over the past 30 years, the Brazilian Landless Workers’ Movement (MST), one of the largest social movements in Latin America, has developed a series of pedagogical practices for public schools that support the movement's struggle for agrarian reform in the Brazilian countryside. The MST's educational initiatives can be viewed in terms of their place in the debate about how grassroots movements develop alternatives to dominant educational practices. Purpose This article examines the diverse pedagogies and educational theories that MST activists have drawn on, while also assessing the political implications of this participation in the public schools. Setting Research took place in Brazil, in several dozen public schools located in MST communities. Population Research participants included MST activists, students attending schools in MST communities, teachers working in these schools, administrators, and public officials. More than 150 people were interviewed. Research Design This research is an ethnographic, qualitative case study, examining the MST's educational initiatives in four different regions of Brazil. Field research took place over 15 months, between October 2010 and December 2011. Research methods included semi-structured interviews, classroom observation, participation observation, analysis of primary documents, and focus groups with teachers and students. Findings Although the MST initially invested only in informal, popular education, by the late 1980s activists began to realize that transforming public schools was necessary for the realization of the movement's social and political goals. By drawing on their previous experiences with popular education, as well as the theories of several outside intellectuals, activists developed educational utopias that allowed them to solidify their educational proposals in practice. Conclusions This article provides insights into the process of grassroots educational innovation, illustrating that communities draw on a diverse set of educational theories that resonate with local practices and beliefs to develop alternative proposals for their schools. The article also suggests that certain questions arise about the purpose of public education when social movements with particular visions of societal transformation demand participation in the public school sphere. The article argues that this social movement participation is appropriate if activists can mobilize parents, students, teachers, and other community members to implement this vision through a collective process of participatory governance.

Semi-structured interviews and participant observation were used to understand how urban Chileans form relationships with nature and nonhuman species in central Chile. Most informants expressed dislike of the typical mediterranean-habitat landscape, characterizing it as dry, poor, and empty. Yet many people expressed nostalgic attachment to specific places, species, and activities that they had experienced, often as children. Most of the reminisced-about interactions were fleeting or had been lost over time. In the dominant discourse, nature in the mediterranean zone of Chile is closely associated with poverty, and it is considered to lack beauty, biodiversity, culture, and history. Appeals to personal nostalgia may break through this discourse to form private assemblages of value. Chileans also attributed social value to interactions with species who are rare or who are found “exclusively” in Chile. Appeals to nostalgia, rarity, and exclusivity help to draw these private discourses into the public realm.

The present study aimed to examine the ways in which drama and drama techniques and practices, as implemented in the English language classes and combined with pedagogical practices to teach and learn English conversation, can create the appropriate conditions that promote learning environments conducive for learning English conversations. The participants of this study were thirty undergraduate male and female students who had studied English at the secondary and high school levels at the public schools in Ardebil. They were classified into two groups including Control and Experimental groups. The two groups were administered a Test-Retest evaluation to measure the targeted language skills that was to be taught to them. In order to collect the necessary data, two modern plays were taught and rehearsed in classroom context and then a retest were administered after the practice of these two modern dramatic discourse in the classroom. The different data-collecting techniques were used for the current research were participant observation (direct and indirect), and interviews. After analysing the data the results showed that there was no significant improvement in English competence of the Control group but the Experimental group revealed a tremendous achievement in their abilities in English conversations through the use of dramatic discourse.

This paper presents results from a study in Aotearoa New Zealand 1 which explored the ideas of social work practitioners on public perceptions of social work and how to improve them. This qualitative research was part of a Master’s project for two of the authors and followed on from two previous quantitative studies on this topic in Aotearoa. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 social work practitioners. Thematic analysis was used to create themes concerning what the perceived public perception was, what contributed to it, and how to improve it. The findings have implications for being better able to understand factors that contribute to the public perception of social work so that it may be improved, for increasing the public’s understanding of social work, and for recruitment of students into the profession.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the specific meanings underlying the general antecedents of organisational innovativeness (OI) in one specific public sector context, to fill empirically the categories employed in prior quantitative research and to understand better some of the opportunities for strengthening facilitators of OI and overcoming barriers to OI that present themselves in particular contexts. Design/methodology/approach This research is based on a field study. It uses 29 semi-structured interviews with the members of UAE government and semi-government organisations. The research methodology is qualitative: it seeks to elucidate the meanings that structure the respondents’ understandings of innovation at work. Findings Across the UAE public sector there are great differences in organisational members’ interest in, and readiness to engage with, OI. Members of the public sector tended to conceptualise OI as a set of individual efforts and relationships in which the trust with superiors played a key role, as did the availability of individual rewards. For some respondents communication served as an umbrella term to denote organisational characteristics that would enable individuals to join efforts to make the public sector more innovative. Overall, the great variations in respondents’ ability to articulate and conceptualise the antecedents of OI suggests that organisational capabilities to support OI need strengthening. Research limitations/implications The paper’s insights are based on the study of the public sector of only one country and may be difficult to generalise to other countries. Practical implications The paper suggests ways in which Emirati public sector organisations can strengthen the facilitators of OI and overcome the obstacles presented by the barriers to OI in order to help public sector leaders and employees make innovation a routine element of their day-to-day work. Originality/value The paper presents a first attempt at using qualitative research to deepen our understanding of the antecedents of organisational innovativeness in the public sector.

Artesanato. Tecelagem. TRAMING, DESTRAMING AND RETRAMING: art in the mountains of Minas Gerais Abstract A result of my Doctoral Dissertation defended in 2015, this paper seeks to analyze how the pedagogical process of teaching and learning hand weaving developed in Resende Costa town occurs. In this small town in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, most people live out of hand weaving. In this place, they frequently repeated: "In Resende Costa there is a loom at every home”. In this sense, the economy of the town revolves around its 98 handcrafting stores. Methodology employed based on the participatory research method was carried out with semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and field diary. The data analysis was based on feminist hermeneutics. Among the outcomes, we see the female weavers' training beeing developed by local women, mainly by the hand of older ones that pass around their knowledge and, thus, creating a process of teaching and learning of hand weaving and their invisibility. Keywords: Feminist Studies. The uniform can be understood as a symbol which represents the individual’s occupation in society and in the institution where he works. Nursing, since its early days, is a profession which demands the wearing of a uniform. Nursing schools, traditionally, are in charge of indicating the wearing of uniform, informing this clothing’s symbolic importance for the profession. The present paper aims at analyzing the uniform’s meanings revealed by nursing teachers at a high school and nursing technician course, in a school located in the North Zone of São Paulo, Brazil. This qualitative research with semi structured interviews and participant observation with nursing teachers. The results showed that there are meanings that update traditional values related to the profession, the feminine gender, professional identity and the association between uniform and painful experiences.

Purpose: The objective of this research is to investigate the challenges that are acting as barriers to the adoption of a SaaS based ECM solution, mainly from an Information Technology viewpoint, in the wake of ‘cloud first’ policy that had been launched by the New Zealand government with the intent to maximize efficiencies across the public sector. Methodology: Qualitative research was chosen for this research and outputs from the semi-structured interviews are compared with literature in order to highlight the commonalities and potentially highlighting any additional ones that exist with regards to the challenges that are associated with the adoption of a cloud based ECM service. Practical Implications: This research will help organizations that have on-premises ECM solutions in making informed decisions through being aware of the challenges that act as barriers to adopting a SaaS based ECM solution through migrating from an on-premises ECM application. Originality/Value: ECM in the context of a service based offering has been relatively little discussed in the literature. This research adds to the literature by examining ECM through the lens of cloud computing and investigates the challenges that are influencing its adoption.
