Given the increasing efforts at improving waste management in developing countries, this study aimed to analyze factors that influence participation in household waste sorting. It thereby is the first review that extends the published literature on this topic. A meta-analysis was conducted that analyzed twelve influencing factors. A moderate correlation was found for the most strongly influential factors—attitude, moral norm, subjective norm and perceived behavior control—which indicates that people’s perception of waste sorting is most influencing in prompting participation in household waste sorting in developing countries. The results of this meta-analysis indicate that knowledge, situational factors, such as physical conditions, and governmental incentives can influence participation in household waste sorting in developing countries but the relationship between those factors and other factors with high correlations should be studied further. Notably, socio-demographic factors have the weakest influence on the participation in waste sorting in developing countries despite a large body of research on such factors. It can be constructive to take the relationship across the identified factors and the participation in waste sorting into consideration when aiming to implement measures to increase the participation in waste management schemes through waste sorting. The outcome of this study may contribute to recommendations and policy suggestions regarding the promotion of sustainable waste management through household waste sorting in developing countries.

The increased population and economic of the community indirectly affect the amount of household waste produced by the community. Unfortunately, this is not accompanied by good waste management from the community level. Management of household waste at the community level can be done by sorting waste. The habit of people to dispose of garbage without sorting can be a problem in implementing 3R activities (Recycling, Reducing, and Reusing). The purpose of this study is to find out what factors influence the community in sorting household waste. This research is based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) which considers several factors such as attitudes, subjective norms, and behavioral controls to influence someone to make intentions in behavior and expand the TPB conceptual model to overcome gaps. The results of this study came from a survey with 301 respondents in two locations namely DKI Jakarta and Depok. The results of this study indicate that attitudinal factors have the most significant influence on the intention and behavior of sorting garbage. While other factors such as demographics, subjective norms and perceptions of behavioral control do not have a significant effect.

AbstractA matter of current dispute in the German waste-management sector is the extent to which it is permissible under EU law to restrict the market for the recovery of household waste in favour of public providers of disposal services, as is common practice in many member states. This dispute raises fundamental questions as to the relationship between the public provision of services of general interest and European competition and so concerns, in particular, the relevant rules under Article 106 TFEU. In adopting this article, the parties to the Treaty have—as will be shown below—reserved considerable freedom to exempt public services of general interest from competition and the free movement of goods. Whilst their freedom to do so may be limited under secondary legislation providing for an EU-wide competition solution, such legislation must take the form of a targeted liberalisation measure which also lays down the accompanying rules needed to guarantee a universal, reliable and affordable provision of services. The secondary EU waste legislation does not meet this requirement.

This work aims to analyze the relationship between security and peace and their present conditions in Latin America, based on the research of these issues in international publications in various media and data collection indicators available in studies with statistical reliability. There is also the goal of obtaining a set of indicators in the light of existing jobs and new contributions that may show the “state” of present Security and Peace conditions in Latin America and infer about the future of such conditions, with a view to proposing actions between and within countries of the region. The Security-Peace binomial presents us with a fundamental question regarding the relationship of cause and effect - the safety results from the peace or peace is a consequence of security? Independent-minded succeed or not answer this question we have to consider that the two factors have impacts on the wellness of the human being. Equal opportunities and valuing life are fundamental principles that pave the road to full citizenship in Latin America, and without which it won´t make sense any attempt to try to achieve security and peace. The Security Commission Hemispheric of the Organization of American States Permanent Council emphasizes in a recent meeting (March 2000) that among the premises for reformulation of the hemisphere’s security concept are “the need to recognize the close links between security, development and consolidation of democracy as well as the historical relationship between peace and democracy”. We are hence at a very special moment of our historical trajectory, where notorious disrespect for human rights are a frequent threat to populations of Latin American countries. Initiatives to education, focusing on children and youth, with heavy use of art and science, may make all the difference and create today a future of peace and security, based on fraternity among all peoples.

The increase in population in Palangka Raya each year results in an increase in the waste produced. The increase in the amount of garbage was apparently not followed by an increase in temporary waste disposal facilities (TPS). Based on the results of previous research it was found that for the Pahandut Subdistrict of Palangka Raya City the waste generation produced was not comparable to the capacity of the TPS capacity. It was stated that the capacity of the TPS was only 45% of the waste generation that occurred per day. As a result, a lot of garbage is scattered outside the TPS and some are dumped into rivers and drainage channels. Based on the foregoing, a proposal arises to reduce the problem of waste generation. One such proposal is to reduce the initial source of waste from individual households. However, to reduce household waste, of course, it needs an effort to provide knowledge to the public about the waste sorting efforts that occur. Community participation in addressing the problem of municipal waste is very dominant, and this level of participation should be the main barometer in future waste management. To increase the role of the community in dealing with waste issues we propose an idea as a solution. The idea is to utilize household waste into compost. For this reason, it is necessary to provide a socialization on how to make compost from household waste. Therefore we made socialization with the topic of How to Make Simple Home Composter.

Garbage is a problem that must be faced by the community, because garbage is a form of environmental pollution, where garbage can have an impact on public health, such as; odors, floods, destroy aesthetics, fire, greenhouse effect and so on. Household waste management requires active community participation so that the role of the government does not get heavier. Increase community participation in waste management in Denpasar City. In an effort to build the effectiveness of waste management in Denpasar City, it is necessary to develop a community-based waste management model in Denpasar City. The purpose of developing a waste management model is to actively involve the community in managing waste in Denpasar City. This study uses the Interpretative Structural Modeling (ISM) method approach by using elements of the affected community, elements of program objectives, elements of indicators to achieve goals, elements of the main constraints and elements of the institutions involved. In compiling the sub-elements from each element, it involves figures, experts, actors and activists in Denpasar City on community-based waste management. The results of the modeling show that the participatory role of the community is very important in reducing waste through reuse, increasing community involvement and implementing 3R activities. The main obstacle in waste management is the limited facilities and infrastructure for waste management and the unclear waste management organization. Possible changes are that law enforcement and waste regulations must be clear and the involvement of all stakeholders in community-based waste management in Denpasar City. Keywords: model; management; waste; society.

Abstract Community participation has grown in prominence in mitigating disasters globally. It involves the active involvement in search and rescue to reconstruction that people affected by disasters undertake unsolicited. Predictive power in disaster recovery has further increased its relevance. However, quantitative analysis that community participation has on disaster mitigation measures is scant. The study analyses community participation’s impact on disaster mitigation measures following the Kochi flood of 2018 and 2019 in India. We use a Multivariate Probit Regression model with a sample size of 750 to analyse the relationship between disaster mitigation measures (namely, disaster event planning, previous experience, following disaster-related news closely, and neighbourhood relationship) and community participation. Results show participants who were active in community events were 23% more likely to adopt all the disaster mitigation measures than those who did not. In addition, households with special-needs members were more likely to be prepared for an unanticipated event. Results also showed higher education levels directly correlated to implementing more significant disaster mitigation measures. Implications for government policy formation include schemes to enhance community rehabilitation and promote social participation to mitigate future disaster events.
