Background: A number of factors are known to reduce fertility rate in animals and one of the important categories of such factors is chromosome anomalies. They can occur with or without causing phenotypic abnormalities on animals; in some cases, they may directly affect meiosis, gametogenesis and the viability of conceptus. In many instances, balanced structural rearrangements can be transmitted to offspring, affecting fertility in subsequent generations. Aim: This work investigated the occurrence of chromosome aberrations in Rusa timorensis, Rusa unicolor and Axis axis raised in a nucleus deer farm in Malaysia with a history of declining fertility of unknown origin. Materials & methods: Blood samples were collected from 60 animals through venipuncture, cultured for 72 h and arrested at metaphase. SmartType® and Ideokar® software were used to karyotype the chromosomes. Results: We found 15 out of the 60 animals screened from both sexes harbor some form of chromosome aberration. Chromosomal aberrations exist at the rate of 25% and may not be unconnected with the observed reduced fertility on the farm. Further investigations should be carried out, especially on the offspring of the studied animals to transmission of these aberrations. The animals that are confirmed to transmit the chromosomal aberrations should be culled to arrest the propagation of their abnormalities.

Purpose The current “specific language impairment” and “developmental language disorder” discussion might lead to important changes in how we refer to children with language disorders of unknown origin. The field has seen other changes in terminology. This article reviews many of these changes. Method A literature review of previous clinical labels was conducted, and possible reasons for the changes in labels were identified. Results References to children with significant yet unexplained deficits in language ability have been part of the scientific literature since, at least, the early 1800s. Terms have changed from those with a neurological emphasis to those that do not imply a cause for the language disorder. Diagnostic criteria have become more explicit but have become, at certain points, too narrow to represent the wider range of children with language disorders of unknown origin. Conclusions The field was not well served by the many changes in terminology that have transpired in the past. A new label at this point must be accompanied by strong efforts to recruit its adoption by clinical speech-language pathologists and the general public.

Atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV) was first discovered in North America in 2015 and was later shown to be associated with congenital tremor (CT) in piglets. CT is an occasional challenge in some Danish sow herds. Therefore, we initiated an observational case control study to clarify a possible relationship between CT and APPV in Danish pig production. Blood samples were collected from piglets affected by CT (n = 55) in ten different sow herds and from healthy piglets in five sow herds without a history of CT piglets (n = 25), as well as one sow herd with a sporadic occurrence of CT (n = 5). APPV was detected by RT-qPCR in all samples from piglets affected by CT and in three out of five samples from piglets in the herd with a sporadic occurrence of CT. In the herds without a history of CT, only one out of 25 piglets were positive for APPV. In addition, farmers or veterinarians in CT-affected herds were asked about their experience of the issue. CT is most often seen in gilt litters, and a substantial increase in pre-weaning mortality is only observed in severe cases. According to our investigations, APPV is a common finding in piglets suffering from CT in Denmark.

NETosis is a process suffered by neutrophils that consists in the loss of their function and the release of their nuclear material as large web-like structure called neutrophil extracelular traps (NETs). Many authors demonstrated that NETs participate in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), because the release of autoantigens amplifies inflammatory responses, perpetuating the exacerbation of autoimmunity. On the other hand, NETs may play a prominent role in thrombosis because they serve as a negative charge scaffold to trap platelets and coagulation factors, promoting blood clot formation. Objetive: to determine participation of NETs in the hypercoagulable state of patients with SLE. Methods: 32 patients with SLE without antiphospholipid antibodies and without history of thrombotic events were included after signing informed consent; 88 sex- and age-matched healthy controls were also recruited. Blood samples were drawn in citrate tubes (3.2%). Neutrophils were isolated by centrifugation of whole blood with a Percoll gradient at 500 g, 25 min, 5ºC. To induce NETs formation, 2.5x105 isolated neutrophils were incubated in RPMI-1640 medium with or without 100 nM phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) for 45 min, 37ºC. To verify NETs formation, neutrophils were seeded on cover glasses pretreated with poly-L-lysine in RPMI-1640 medium with or without 100 nM PMA for 45 min, 37ºC. Samples were fixed and later incubated first, with an anti-human myeloperoxidase and then, with Alexa Fluor 488 goat anti-rabbit IgG. Finally, samples were embedded in mounting medium with DAPI and were observed by fluorescence microscopy with a Nikon Eclipse 90i microscope. Cell free DNA (cfDNA) was determined in poor platelet plasma obtained by centrifugation of whole blood (2500 g for 15 min), using the Quant-iT™ Pico Green dsDNA assay (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA) according to the manufacturer's instructions. To assess thrombin generation associated to NETs, 2.5x105 neutrophils from patients with SLE or from controls were incubated with either buffer or 100 nM PMA during 45 min. Then they were centrifuged at 5000g, 3 min and resuspended in 40-μL of rich platelet rich plasma (PRP) from healthy controls adjusted to 106 platelets/µL obtained from blood samples drawn either in citrate or citrate plus corn trypsin inhibitor (CTI) tubes. CTI is an inhibitor of FXIIa. Calibrated automated thrombogram (CAT) was performed without addition of any trigger. Results: We observed that plasma from patients with SLE had increased free nucleic acids (cfDNA in fluorescence units, controls: 94.90±21.29, SLE patients: 112.4±26.59; P=0.0211). In accordance with this observation, analyses by fluorescence microscopy showed that neutrophils from SLE patients, but not from controls, had NETs even in basal conditions. Moreover, neutrophils from these patients generated more NETs in presence of 100 nM PMA (Figure 1). To evaluate whether the increment of NETs observed in patients with SLE had consequences on the hemostasis of these patients, we tested thrombin generation of neutrophils from either patients with SLE or controls in the presence of platelets from healthy controls. Neutrophils from patients with SLE produced more thrombin than those from healthy controls under basal conditions and after stimulation with 100 nM PMA. These increments were avoided when PRP was collected from blood samples drawn with CTI (Figure 2). Conclusions: Neutrophils from SLE patients without antiphospholipid antibodies and with no history of thrombotic seemed more prone to form NETs than those from healthy controls. NETs might be considered as a key element in the prothrombotic profile of patients with SLE and their analyses by thrombin generation test might be useful to detect risk of occurrence of thrombotic events in these patients and to prevent its occurrence by therapeutic management. ABSTRACTPopulation genetics have been greatly beneficial to improve knowledge about biological invasions. Model-based genetic inference methods, such as approximate Bayesian computation (ABC), have brought this improvement to a higher level and are now essential tools to decipher the invasion routes of any invasive species. In this paper, we performed ABC analyses to shed light on the pinewood nematode (PWN) worldwide invasion routes and to identify the source of European populations. Originating from North America, this microscopic worm has been invading Asia since 1905 and Europe since 1999, causing tremendous damage on pine forests. Using microsatellite data, we demonstrated the existence of multiple introduction events in Japan (one involving individuals originating from the USA and one involving individuals with an unknown origin) and China (one involving individuals originating from the USA and one involving individuals originating from Japan). We also found that Portuguese samples had an American origin. Although we observed some discrepancies between descriptive genetic methods and the ABC method, which are worth investigating and are discussed here, the ABC approach definitely helped clarify the worldwide history of the PWN invasion.

Introduction: attention to the problems of scientific specialties is explained by a number of factors of a substantive and formal-institutional nature. The predicted change in the nomenclature of scientific specialties, including law, makes the research topical. Purpose: to identify the consequences and evaluate the results of future changes with extrapolation of conclusions to the science of business law. Methods: analysis, synthesis, comparison, historicism, description, interpretation, forecasting, as well as sociological and historical methods. Results: an excursion into the history of the issue is made: the pre-revolutionary, Soviet and post-Soviet periods are covered. Based on the actual data, it is shown that permanent changes in the system of scientific specialties in law are a tradition of Russian science. At the same time, the previously mentioned changes were of an evolutionary nature. The current situation with dissertation research within the current nomenclature is highlighted. Factors of popularity of the scientific specialty 12.00.03 are revealed, among which-stability, successful arrangement of branches, demand for scientists. The conclusion about the correctness of preserving business law within the same specialty with civil law is confirmed. Essential and bureaucratic problems of the scientific specialty 12.00.07 are shown. The article presents the data of a sociological study, the results of which indicate divergence and progressive autarky in the field of social Sciences. The characteristics of the main expected changes in the nomenclature of scientific specialties in law, including such as consolidation, rejection of the industry criterion in the formation are given. A forecast is made about the consequences of the introduction of these innovations. The author’s opinion is expressed regarding the place of business law in the new system of scientific specialties. Attention is drawn to possible problems and a way to overcome them is suggested. Conclusions: the new paradigm of scientific specialties in law should be evaluated positively. Its application allows us to approach the interdisciplinarity, complexity of scientific research, and the creation of dissertations as integral projects. In addition to the content side, the new nomenclature is designed to minimize problems in the formation of dissertation councils, selection of candidates for official opponents, and scientific organizations.

Lime plaster and mortar are pyrotechnological materials that have been employed in constructions since prehistoric times. They may nucleate as calcite and/or aragonite under different environmental settings. In nature, aragonite and calcite form through biogenic and geogenic processes that lead to different degrees of atomic order. The latter is a result of defects in the crystal lattice, which affect the properties of crystals, including their interaction with infrared light. Using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) with the KBr pellet method, it is possible to exploit these differences and assess the degree of atomic order of aragonite and calcite crystals and thus their mechanisms of formation. Here we use FTIR to characterize the degree of short-range atomic order of a pyrogenic form of aragonite recently observed in experimental and archaeological lime binders. We show that pyrogenic aragonite has a unique signature that allows its identification in archaeological sediments and lime binders of unknown origin. Based on these results, we developed a new FTIR-based method to assess the integrity and degree of preservation of aragonite and calcite when they occur together in the same material. This method allowed a better assessment of the diagenetic history of an archaeological plaster and finds application in the characterization of present-day conservation materials, such as lime plaster and mortar, where different polymorphs may nucleate and undergo recrystallization processes that can alter the mechanical properties of binders.

Abstract Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide and is more common in developing countries. Isolated splenic TB is typically found in trauma, miliary TB and immunocompromised status. We present a very rare case of an immunocompetent child with an isolated primary TB in the spleen. The child only had fever of unknown origin (FUO), and mild anaemia. The diagnosis was not made until splenectomy was performed. The patient took the quadruple therapy for TB, and follow-ups showed no recurrence. This case is unique because this child was immunocompetent with no history of trauma or active TB. TB diagnosis should never be ignored in FUO as this might prevent unnecessary procedures to the patient. Although the child was vaccinated with Bacillus Calmette–Guérin that usually protects against severe TB in first 5 years of life, it did not prevent from affecting the spleen.

Case summary A 9-year-old male neutered domestic longhair cat was presented with a 3 week history of lethargy and pain of unknown origin. A large extra-axial mass was demonstrated on MRI of the head, with cribriform plate destruction, extensive nasal invasion and intracranial expansion, producing a severe mass effect. The mass was isointense on T1-weighted imaging, predominantly hypointense with some hyperintense areas on T2-weighted imaging and fluid attenuation inversion recovery, markedly contrast enhancing, and caused transtentorial and cerebellar herniation. Histopathological evaluation confirmed a transitional (mixed) meningioma. Relevance and novel information To our knowledge this is the first report of a meningioma with extensive nasal involvement in a cat. Based on this case, meningioma should be considered as a differential diagnosis for tumours involving the nasal cavity and frontal lobe with cribriform plate destruction.
