Fish silage made by grinding herring and adding formic acid, β-hydroxytoluene and potassium sorbate was evaluated as a protein supplement for young cattle. Only about 15% of the crude protein in the herring silage was true protein. Ammonia N accounted for 8% of the crude protein and most of the rest was peptides and free amino acids. The crude protein of herring silage was as resistant as fish meal to deamination when fermented in rumen fluid, and more resistant than soybean or casein. The herring silage was readily accepted by Holstein heifers fed hay or grass–legume silage with potatoes (7 kg d−1) and a supplement (1.5 kg d−1). Feed intake and weight gain were similar when the heifers were fed hay with either soybean meal or herring silage but were higher when forage silage replaced the hay. Rumen fluid NH3-N and blood urea levels were normal, even for cattle fed the high non-protein N diet of forage silage with herring silage. The herring silage depressed rumen fluid acetate levels and increased propionate in the heifers fed hay + potatoes, probably because of the unsaturated fatty acids in the herring. Well-made herring silage was a suitable protein supplement for young cattle fed forage and potato diets. Key words: Herring silage, fish silage, potatoes, cattle, protein degradation

The article presents the results of cross-breeding of mountain cattle with Russian polled breed. The growth and development of the crossbreed and purebred bull-calves of these breeds in the mountainous province of Dagestan have been studied in a comparative aspect. Efficiency of highland pastures use by crossbreed animals in comparison with pure-bred mountain peers has been established. The young cattle was grown according to the technology of meat cattle breeding “cow — calf”. In ablactation, the crossbred bull-calves had a living weight of 191.3 kg versus 159.3 kg in peers of mountain cattle. This figure was higher by 32.0 kg or 20.1% compared to purebred bull-calves of mountain cattle. At 12 months of age, the crossbred animals were also superior in living weight in comparison of young mountain cattle by 40.1 kg or 18.4%. According to this indicator, the advantage in crossbred animals at 15 months of age remained. The live mass of crossbred bull-calves at 18 months of age equaled to 399.5 kg against 332.6 kg of purebred mountain peers, the difference in favor of the former was 66.9 kg or 20.1%. Average daily growth of crossbreed bull-calves during the growing period was 122 grams or 20.8% higher. Young crossbred cattle had a clear advantage in terms of physique. Heavy carcasses with high slaughter yield were obtained from it. The conducted studies indicate the effectiveness of cross-breeding of mountain cattle with Russian polled breed in the mountainous province of Dagestan.

The experimental infection of young cattle egrets with metacercarial cysts of Clinostomum tilapiae Ukoli, 1966 from Tilapia spp. is described.A table showing the duration of infection, the number of parasites recovered, the percentage of infection and the location of the parasites within the host is constructed and the results discussed.A graph of mean length and breadth of body, oral and ventral suckers, cirrus pouch, ovary and anterior testis, is plotted against the duration of infection in days. Most of these dimensions are found to attain a peak two days after infection. It is also found that while the ovary increases in size with age, the cirrus pouch remains constant, so that in mature adults, both are about equal in size,It is shown, by plotting length of organs against length of body and by expressing mean measurements of certain dimensions as percentages of body length, that apart from the testes, all the other organs in both the metacercariae and the adults maintain a constant relationship both with one another and with body length as they grow older.

Interesting products for animal husbandry for processing protein-rich raw materials are substances containing a complex of short peptides. Some of these short peptides have high biological activity. The possibility of using the «Abiotonik» energy protein supplement, which contains these substances, to stimulate the growth and development of piglets and reduce mortality, was considered by us in this paper. The data obtained confirmed the positive effect of the additive on the overall health of piglets, on their growth and development indicators and safety.

Due to the intensifi cation of the cattle breeding industry, there is a need to fi nd ways and available methods to increase production and improve the quality of beef based on the use of existing breeding stock of dairy cattle. The success of industrial crossbreeding depends primarily on the correct selection of breeds and their compatibility. The purpose of the research was to study the growth and development of purebred young cattle of Black-and-White breed and crossbreeds with Hereford breed in the Leningrad region. Research and production experiment has been carried out in the training and research farm “Pushkinskoe” of the St. Petersburg State Agrarian University. In the control group purebred animals of Black-and-White breed (9 heads steers and 7 heads heifers), in the experimental group half-blood animals (9 heads steers and 7 heads heifers) have been selected obtained as a result of crossbreeding Black-and-White cows and Hereford sires. The researches have been conducted from birth to 18 months of age. Researches have shown that the crossbreed young animals in comparison with purebreds were distinguished by expressed meat type of physique, a squat body with a welldeveloped back, a fairly wide and deep chest and a strong bone structure. Crossbred animals have been characterized by increased growth intensity. Steers and heifers outperformed their Black-and-White herdmates in terms of daily live weight gain overall over the study period by 170,6 g or 18,8 % , and 130,2 g or 15,6 %, respectively (P ≤ 0,01–0,001). According to the research results, it is recommended that to increase the volume of beef production and more fully realize the productive potential of cattle in the Leningrad region, it is necessary to conduct industrial crossbreeding of holstinized Black-and-White cattle with Hereford cattle. The resulting crossbreed young animals should be raised and fattened up to 16 months of age when steers reach a live weight of 540 kg and feed expenditures per 1 kg of live weight gain of 6,4 EFU, and heifers more than 480 kg and 6,9 EFU, respectively.

Food behavior has a significant influence on all areas of animal use, such as the growth and development of young animals, the quality of milk and meat, and the productivity of cows. The most importance in agricultural ethology is the study of food, group and reproductive behavior. The purpose of the research was to consider the characteristics of behavior and productivity of cows and young animals against the background of the use of feed protein additive Biovitel. It has been found that the time of ruminating, ruminating periods and chewing of feed was higher in high-yielding cows than in low-yielding ones. During the day 17,3 ruminant periods of 28,8 minutes have been registered in highly productive cows, and 15,3 and 35,5 minutes have been registered in cows with average productivity, respectively. The ruminant process in all animals is most active between 21,00 and 24,00 hours, as well as between 2,00 and 5,00 hours, regardless of the season of the year. In high-yielding cows reactions to receiving silage, hay, and straw were somewhat more frequent in comparison with low-yielding ones. It has been found that food activity had a biger influence on the productivity of steers than physical activity. The time spent on sleep has decreased with age and had the same tendency as the growth rate. The time spent on physical activity also has increased with age, but it did not significantly affect the indicators of body weight gain. During all periods of growing the steers that received the feed protein additive Biovitel have been characterized by calm behavior and spent more time eating feed. It has been conducted by the researches and the nature of the results obtained confirm the validity of the use of Biovitel feed additive for the purpose of positive influence on the behavior, productivity of cows, growth and development of young cattle.

The features of growth and development of young cattle during growth in the early period of ontogenesis after using the phytosupplements on the basis of a water dispersed extract from birch and larch wood allowing to activate metabolic processes in an organism and to increase a gain of live weight of calves by 20,3 and 34,5% respectively have been studied. Hematological studies show that the intensive growth of young calves is accompanied by the dynamics of serum protein, calcium, phosphorus, glucose, alkaline phosphatase, which can be further used as a test for early prediction of calf growth in industrial complexes.

Cell and tissue interactions are a basic aspect of eukaryotic growth and development. While cell-to-cell interactions involving recognition and incompatibility have been studied extensively in animals, there is no known antigen-antibody reaction in plants and the recognition mechanisms operating in plant grafts have been virtually neglected. An ultrastructural study of the Sedum telephoides/Solanum pennellii graft was undertaken to define possible mechanisms of plant graft incompatibility. Grafts were surgically dissected from greenhouse grown plants at various times over 1-4 weeks and prepared for EM employing variations in the standard fixation and embedding procedure. Stock and scion adhere within 6 days after grafting. Following progressive cell senescence in both Sedum and Solanum, the graft interface appears as a band of 8-11 crushed cells after 2 weeks (Fig. 1, I). Trapped between the buckled cell walls are densely staining cytoplasmic remnants and residual starch grains, an initial product of wound reactions in plants.

Calcium is an important element in the growth and development of plants and one form of calcium is calcium oxalate. Calcium oxalate has been found in leaf seed, stem material plant tissue culture, fungi and lichen using one or more of the following methods—polarized light microscopy (PLM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and x-ray diffraction. Two methods are presented here for qualitatively estimating calcium oxalate in dried or fixed tobacco (Nicotiana) leaf from different stalk positions using PLM. SEM, coupled with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS), and powder x-ray diffraction were used to verify that the crystals observed in the dried leaf with PLM were calcium oxalate.
