Abstract Heavy metal contamination of water resources is a critical issue which adversely affects humans. Ferrate(VI) (FeVIO42−, Fe(VI)), as a new type of green multifunctional water treatment agent, has shown promising potential for environmental decontamination. A complete understanding of the interactions between ferrate(VI) and toxic metals can be conducive to the further development of ferrate(VI) technology for application to wastewater treatment. This review first introduces the purification of ferrate(VI) technology for toxic metals including free heavy metals and metal complexes briefly. The effective parameters are then analyzed and discussed in detail. Subsequently, the reactivity and mechanisms of ferrate(VI) with toxic metals are emphatically described. Finally, possible research challenges and directions for ferrate(VI) technology applied to wastewater treatment in the future are summarized.

With increasing demand of alternatives to oil-based lightweight materials, the development of tannin-based foams is getting more and more attention. In this paper, an alternative to traditionally used solvent-evaporation in the production of tannin-foams is presented. Mixing the tannin-furanic resin with different amounts of ionic and non-ionic surfactants at high agitational speed allows for the formation of highly porous, mechanically stable tannin-foams. Investigations on the influence of surfactant type and ingredient ratios on the foaming behavior and properties of the final foams were conducted. Materials obtained via this route do present extraordinary compression resistance (about 0.8 MPa), good thermal insulation (40 mW/m·K) and are suitable as a wastewater treatment agent at the end-of-life. It was shown that during mechanical blowing, homogeneous cross-sections and almost perfectly round pores form, leading to the high compression resistance. Investigations by means of Fourier transform infrared and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy show that the milder reaction environment leads to more linear poly(furfuryl alcohol)-tannin chains. This new type of tannin foam allows for use in various different fields of application ranging from durable building insulation to wastewater treatment.

Recycling economy, as a new type of development model and economic growth mode, will form a social resultant force in government promotion, enterprise entities and public participation. Thus, it is quite necessary to discuss on the economic behavior, development restriction and profit motive of the Government, enterprises and the public as the micro-economic entities. Especially in the process of current recycling economic development of China, the sticking point for further development and achievement of Chinese recycling economy lies so much on how to enhance the intrinsic dynamics of the enterprises for developing the recycling economy.

Heavy metal contamination of poultry meat is a critical issue for human health due to associated risks of cytotoxicity and systemic pathologies after ingestion of such metals. A total of twenty chicken liver samples were collected from markets of Erbil city and analyzed for ten heavy metals contents by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry. The targeted metals were cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se). The average concentrations (mg/kg) of targeted trace elements were 0.06±0.027, 0.06±0.05, 2.05±0.34, 1.85±0.47, 0.15±0.17, and 33.53±5.24 for Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn respectively. Copper (Cu) levels significantly exceeded the maximum permissible limit of WHO. Moreover, the average concentrations of toxic heavy metals and selenium were 0.07±0.037, 0.278±0.10, 0.11±0.083, and 2.01±0.454 mg/kg for Cd, Pb, Hg, and Se respectively. Hg and Pb levels exceeded the permissible limits of WHO. Higher levels of Cu and Hg in poultry may pose a serious threat to consumers which demand countermeasures and precautions to be taken. Iraqi Standards Authority and relevant official institutions are strongly recommended to regulate safe disposal of heavy metal waste in the environment to reduce animal exposure to such metals.

Rural revitalization calls for a new type of urban–rural relations in urbanizing China. Although the importance of urban–rural dichotomy has received increasing attention by scholars interested in studying urban development and governance in contemporary China, their interpretations about the connection between urban and rural areas remain fragmented and ambiguous. This article seeks to trace the origin of the Chinese city and its relations with the countryside in the imperial era. It generates a more complete understanding of the rural–urban relationship in the traditional Chinese society and to appeal for a more rounded research agenda for the Chinese urbanization based on a sound historical perspective. The findings of this study explain why and how the traditional urban–rural continuum has disappeared in contemporary China, and identifies the key lessons and wisdoms that we can borrow from the imperial era when we come to tackle the present urban–rural development.

Fibers have a high surface area so many cells can be immobilized and when the fibers are rotated, fast reactions occur. When Celite® is entrapped in the fibers, even more area is provided. Half a pound of Celite® has the area of a football field! Toxic metals can be removed from wastewater. Pulp mill effluent can be cleaned. Phenol is degraded and the sulfur taken out of coal. A non-polluting road deicer is produced which doesn't corrode bridges or cars and ethanol for cars puts less lead into the air and water. When an RBC (rotating biological contactor) is run half full and a light shone in the top, the light hits a thin moving film to degrade dioxin.

An electroactive polymer-ceramic hybrid actuation system (HYBAS) was recently developed. The HYBAS demonstrates significantly-enhanced electromechanical performance by utilizing advantages of cooperative contributions of the electromechanical responses of an electrostrictive copolymer and an electroactive single crystal. The hybrid actuation system provides not only a new type of device but also a concept to utilize different electroactive materials in a cooperative and efficient method for optimized electromechanical performance. In order to develop an effective procedure to optimize the performance of a hybrid actuation system (HYBAS), a theoretical model has been developed, based on the elastic and electromechanical properties of the materials utilized in the system and on the configuration of the device. The model also evaluates performance optimization as a function of geometric parameters, including the length of the HYBAS and the thickness ratios of the constituent components. The comparison between the model and the experimental results shows a good agreement and validates the model as an effective method for the further development of high performance actuating devices or systems for various applications.

Abstract Fish migrate up and down streams for reproduction in both sea and freshwater ecosystems over their life cycle. Over the last decades, fish passages have been provided to mitigate the adverse impacts induced by barriers. However, what is the proper type of fish passage and how to guarantee the effectiveness of operation are still under discussion. In this paper, global and China's policies on fish passages are reviewed. The development and main contents of relevant instruments are analyzed. The similarities and differences between China and foreign countries are compared, and issues in the fish protection and fish passages' management in China are identified. The results show that global policies on fish passages varied from local governments to continents. The design, operation, and management of fish passages are popular throughout the world. Duplication of authorities' responsibilities is the most critical issue in China. The paper recommends implementing a plan of environmental protection at watershed scale, and strengthening the monitoring of fish passages' operation and management. Further development directions of policies on fish passages' management have been proposed. The paper may help facilitate national policies on fish passages by integrating the effective measures of global experience.
