Objective: This study aimed to determine antihyperlipidemic activity of binahong leaves and murbey leaves extracts in combination. Methods: A total of 28 rats were divided into seven groups: normal, control, simvastatin 3.6 mg/kg bw, binahong leaves extract 100 mg/kg bw (B100), mulberry leaves extract 200 mg/kg bw (M200), combination of binahong extract 50 mg/kg and mulberry 100 mg/kg (B50+M100), and combination of binahong extract 100 mg/kg bw and mulberry 200 mg/kg bw (B100+M200). Hyperlipidemia was induced by giving rats a high fat diet along with cholesterol (200 mg/kg), cholic acid (0.2% of chow), and propylthiouracil (10 mg/kg bw) for 30 days orally. Then, for the next 14 days, all groups except the control were given the tested substances. Measurement of lipid profile was performed immediately after induction (T0), seven and fourteen days after treatment (T7 and T14, respectively). Results: There were significant differences on a group of M200, B50+M100, and B100+M200 compared to the control group at T14, with the value 33.68%, 34.39 %, and 44.81% (in reduction of total cholesterol) and 36.86%, 37.16%, and 49.99% (in reduction of triglyceride). Conclusion: Group of M200, B50+M100, and B100+M200 reduced total cholesterol and triglyceride level remarkably at day 14. The combination of both extract (B100+M200) considerably shows better activity than either binahong extract or mulberry extract.

Hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic properties of ginger in animal models have been reported. However, information related to the mechanisms and factors involved in the metabolic effects of ginger at a hepatic level are limited. The aim of the present study was to investigate molecular factors involved in the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of a hydroethanolic ginger extract (GE) in the liver of rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD). The study was conducted in male Wistar rats divided into the following 3 groups: (i) Rats fed a standard diet (3.5% fat), the control group; (ii) rats fed an HFD (33.5% fat); and (iii) rats fed an HFD treated with GE (250 mg·kg−1·day−1) for 5 weeks (HFD+GE). Plasma levels of glucose, insulin, lipid profile, leptin, and adiponectin were measured. Liver expression of glycerol phosphate acyltransferase (GPAT), cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR), PPARα and PPARγ, glucose transporter 2 (GLUT-2), liver X receptor, sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP1c), connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), and collagen I was measured. Data were analyzed using a 1-way ANOVA, followed by a Newman−Keuls test if differences were noted. The study showed that GE improved lipid profile and attenuated the increase of plasma levels of glucose, insulin, and leptin in HFD rats. This effect was associated with a higher liver expression of PPARα, PPARγ, and GLUT-2 and an enhancement of plasma adiponectin levels. Furthermore, GE reduced liver expression of GPAT, SREBP1c, CTGF, and collagen I. The results suggest that GE might be considered as an alternative therapeutic strategy in the management of overweight and hepatic and metabolic−related alterations.

Background: Dysplipidemia is a lipid metabolism dysfunctionsuch as the incline and the decline of blood lipid profile. The main abnormallipid fractionlevel are the increase of total cholesterol level, LDL level, and triglyceride and the decline of HDL level. The high level of blood lipid can cause atherosclerosis with the atheroma in arterial intima that contains cholesterol, lipoid, and lipophage. The advance stage of atherosclerosis can cause complications to target organs such as heart and brain. Objectives: This research aimed to evaluate the effects of herbapurganto (PiciaPicriaFelTerraeLour) ethanol extract on Lipid Profile of Dyspilidemic Male Rat(the decline of total cholesterol level, triglyceride level, LDL level, and the increase of HDL level) and also the atherosclerosis process. Research method: This research was conducted to 30male ratswhich dividedinto 6 groups. Group 1was served as the normal control, Group 2was servedas negative controls which were given 10 ml/kg bb Na-CMC , Group 3 was served as positive controls which were given 2 mg/kg bb of atorvastatin dosage, Group 4, 5, and 6 were served as the treatment group, and administered with EEHP at the dose of 75, 150, and 300 mg/kb bb . The test animals were fedwith high fatdiet using quail yolk, used cooking oil, and cow fat mixture for 14 days consecutively to obtain dyslipidemia subjects and continued with 14 consecutively treatment. The measure of lipid profile was conducted in the 28th day. Finding: The statistical analysis results indicated that EEHP could decrease the total of cholesterol level, triglyceride level, LDL level, and also it could increase the HDL level (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Based on the results, it could be concluded that EEHP haseffect towards dyslipidemia rat(the decline of total cholesterol level, triglyceride level, LDL level, and the increase of HDL level) and it could also prevent atherosclerosis.

Synbiotic supplementation can improve metabolic disorders. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of synbiotic supplementation on the levels of asprosin, lipid profile, glucose, and insulin resistance in pregnant rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Rats were divided into three groups: control group (fed base chow), HFD group, and HFD + synbiotic group. Levels of blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), insulin, and asprosin levels were measured. Birth weight of offspring in the HFD + synbiotic group was significantly lower than in the HFD group. Similarly, serum asprosin, insulin, insulin resistance, TG and total cholesterol levels in the HFD + symbiotic group were significantly lower than in the HFD group. Asprosin levels had a significant and positive correlation between food intake in the first ten days of the experiment and gestation period, fasting blood sugar (FBS), TG, and homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) index. Moreover, asprosin levels had a significant and negative correlation with HDL and insulin levels. Results showed, synbiotic supplementation has beneficial effects on obese animals and improves weight gain during pregnancy, pup birth weight, FBS, insulin resistance and lipid profile. These advantages of synbiotic supplementation could be mediated by reducing serum asprosin levels.

Cardiovascular disease causes the highest mortality rate in the world. Atherosclerotic plaque is the most common etiology of cardiovascular disease. High levels of cholesterol in circulation is the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis formation. Atherosclerosis risk can be lowered to 20-40% with statins. Statins are effective in lowering total and LDL cholesterol, but these drugs have been reported to cause side effects. Therefore, it needed an alternative medicine to prevent the process of atherosclerosis using kepuh leaves (Sterculia foetida). Flavonoids contained in Kepuh leaves improve lipid profiles. The aims of this study is to prove the effectiveness of Sterculia foetida in lowering cholesterol, triglyceride and reduce the amount of foam cells on high-fat-diet induced rats. The research design is quasi-experimental with post test only design. Animals are grouped into normal group, negative control group and three treatment groups that were given kepuh leaves extract at the dose of 200 mg/kgBB, 400 mg/kgBB, and 800 mg/ kgBB. Rats were given high-fat diet of initial intravenous adrenaline injection 0.006 mg/200 gBB and duck egg yolks 5 g/kgBB for 21 days. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of extract and its fraction (n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water) of the mulberry leaf (Morus australis Poir.) in reducing triglyceride and total cholesterol levels on HFD and PTU induced rats. Methods: In this study, mulberry leaves were collected from East Nusa Tenggara-Indonesia, extracted using maceration method, and fractionated with various solvents. The thin layer chromatography with silica gel 60 F254 was utilized to identify the active compound on both extract and fraction. Furthermore, using a quasi-experimental with control group design, this study employed 40 healthy male Wistar rats and divided into 8 groups, namely: normal and negative control, positive controls (simvastatin and gemfibrozil), ethanolic extract, and fractions (n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water). All groups were fed with a high cholesterol diet and 0.01% PTU, except for the normal group. During the study, the blood was drawn at day 0, 28, 35, and 42. The triglyceride level was observed using Glycerophosphate-Oxidase Phenol Aminoantipyrine (GPO-PAP) method, while the total cholesterol was measured by Cholesterol Oxidase Phenol Aminoantipyrine (CHOD-PAP). Results: On the 42nd day, ethyl fraction of mulberry leaf (Morus australis Poir.) showed the most significant result of reducing the level of triglyceride and total cholesterol compared to the high-fat diet and PTU induced rat on day 0: triglyceride of 104.89±2.70 mg/dl vs 64.76±1.97 mg/dl and total cholesterol of 96.70±2.45 vs 88.02±1.38 mg/dl. Ethyl acetate fraction was similar to simvastatin in lowering the level of total cholesterol. TLC identification also showed that mulberry leaf contains flavonoids and polyphenols that act as anti-hyperlipidemic. Conclusion: Ethyl acetate fraction of mulberry leaf (Morus australis Poir.) showed best activity on lowering both triglyceride and total cholesterol.

Background: Dyslipidaemia is an important risk factor for development of macrovascular complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Ocimum sanctum (OS) and metformin have shown to have antihyperlipidaemic effects. The present study was undertaken  to evaluate the effects of  OS and Metformin on body weight & plasma lipid  levels of high fat diet fed diabetic ratsMethods: Total of 30 male wistar  rats (100-150gm) were obtained. Animals were fed with a high fat diet throughout the study (6 weeks). Diabetes was induced by using single intra-peritoneal injection of Streptozotocin 50mg/kg at the end of 4 weeks.  Diabetic rats were divided into groups of 6 each and treated as follows: Group 1- Diabetic control, was given vehicle orally. Group 2- O.S. ethanolic extract 100mg/kg body weight orally for 14 days. Group 3- O.S. ethanolic extract  200mg/kg body weight orally for 14 days. Group 4-  Metformin 100mg/day for 14 daysResults: At the end of 4 weeks, body weight of rats were significantly increased (p <0.05). Maximum weight gain was seen in control group whereas weight gain was least in O.S. 200mg/kg group (p >0.05). Decrease in body weight was seen in metformin group. Abdominal circumference of rats also showed similar pattern (p >0.05).  OS 200 caused significant reduction in serum LDL levels (p <0.05) and significant rise of serum HDL levels (p <0.05) as compared to control group. Metformin also favourably affected the lipid profile and its effects were not significantly different from effects of OS 200 (p> 0.05).Conclusions: Present study revealed that Ocimum Sanctum caused significant reduction in serum lipid levels in high fat diet fed diabetic rats. Metformin  also exhibited antihyperlipidaemic activity. So, it is concluded that OS or metformin alone or in combination  could be a novel adjunct to diet and life style modification for the management of dyslipidaemia in type 2 diabetes.  Further studies are required to confirm the antidyslipidaemic activities of individual phytoconstituents of Ocimum sanctum.
