 Objective: Antioxidants are vital substances which possess the ability to protect the body from damage caused by free radical-induced oxidative stress. The purpose of this study is to determine antioxidant activities of alkaloid fractions of Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC. fruits.Methods: Z. acanthopodium DC. fruit was extracted by maceration. Ethanol extract was fractionated with liquid-liquid extraction using n-hexane and chloroform at pH 3, 7, 9, and 11 to obtained alkaloid fractions. Antioxidant activity for extract and fractions was determined with 1,1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl.Results: The IC50 of extract and fractions was 101.11±0.11, 273.24±0.12, 116.62±0.04, 61.12±0.01, 23.15±0.01, and 112.39±0.04 μg/mL, respectively.Conclusion: The results reveal that alkaloid fractions of Z. acanthopodium DC. fruit have very strong antioxidant potential. Our further study is to isolate the alkaloid compounds.

 Objective: The oxidation induced by free radicals results in many degenerative disease. The purpose of this study is to determine antioxidant activities of alkaloid fractions of Litsea cubeba (Lour.) fruit.Methods: L. cubeba Lour. was extracted by maceration. Ethanol extract was fractionated with liquid-liquid extraction using n-hexane and chloroform at pH 3, 7, 9, and 11 to obtained alkaloid fractions. Antioxidant activity for extract and fractions was determined with 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl.Results: The IC50 of extract and fractions was 219.43±0.43, 242.97±0.93, 92.38±0.17, 40.84±0.04, 103.83±3.29, and 103.75±0.42 μg/mL, respectively.Conclusion: The results reveal that alkaloid fractions of L. cubeba fruits have very strong antioxidant potential. Our further study is to isolate the alkaloid compounds.

Abstract. Miftahudin, Hasibuan RS, Chikmawati T. 2019. Antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract of three Selaginella species from Java Island, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 3715-3722. Three Selaginella species, S. ornata, S. plana, and S. willdenowii, from Java Island, Indonesia, have been known to have antioxidant properties; however, in vivo antioxidant activities of these species have not been reported. This research aimed to evaluate the in vivo antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract of three Selaginella species. The 70% ethanol extract of three Selaginella species at four different doses was administered to mice one day before being treated with oxidative stress. The liver tissue of mice treated with or without oxidative stress was analyzed their lipid peroxidation by measuring MDA concentration and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) activities. The results showed that there were variations in antioxidant activity among the three Selaginella species. In general, the dose of 0.3 g extract kg-1 BW has been able to reduce lipid peroxidation and increase SOD activity. The administration of S. ornata extract to the mice at 1.2 g extract kg-1 BW reduced the MDA concentration to the lowest level, but the same dose of two other Selaginella extracts caused toxic effects in mice. The antioxidant activities of S. ornata and S. plana were better than that of S. willdenowii extract, and among those species, S. ornata has the best antioxidant activity.

Oxidative stress has been recognized as a key driver of many ailments affecting humankind. Free radicals attack biologically important biomolecules, impairing their functioning, thereby initiating and exacerbating diseases. As a comeback, antioxidant therapies have been proposed as novel approaches to ameliorating oxidative stress–associated diseases including chronic ones. Antioxidants are thought to employ multifaceted and multitargeted mechanisms that either restore oxidative homeostasis or prevent free radical buildup in the body, which overwhelm the endogenous defenses. Plants have been used for many ages across time to manage human diseases, and have a host of antioxidant phytocompounds. Piliostigma thonningii is traditionally used for the management of inflammation, malaria fever, rheumatism, and insanity, among other diseases caused by a disturbed redox state in the body. In this study, in vitro antioxidant activities of the methanolic and aqueous stem bark extracts of P. thonningii were evaluated using the in vitro antilipid peroxidation, the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging, and the ferric reducing antioxidant power assay methods. The obtained results revealed remarkable antioxidant activities of the studied plant extracts as evidenced by the low IC50 and EC50 values. These antioxidant activities could be due to the presence of antioxidant phytochemicals like flavonoids, carotenoids, tannins, and phenols, among others. Therefore, the therapeutic potency of this plant could be due to its antioxidant properties. This study recommends in vivo antioxidant efficacy testing of the studied plant extracts, as well as isolation and characterization of bioactive antioxidant compounds that are potent against oxidative stress.

Background: Oxidative stress is among the main causes of metabolic disorders. Hence, there is a need to discover potent antioxidants for therapeutic applications. Objective: The objective of this study has been to investigate the phytoconstituents of the methanolic extract of the hard shell of Aegle marmelos fruit and their antioxidant potential. Methods: Methanolic extract was fractionated using different solvents by liquid-liquid extraction. Characterization of the phytoconstituents was done by using phytochemical tests and GC-MS analysis. The free radical scavenging activity, total reducing power, lipid peroxidation inhibition and cell protection assays against oxidative stress were performed with methanolic extract and its fractions. Results: Therapeutically significant class of compounds, for example, polyphenols, glycosides and sterols were revealed in the hard-shell extract. Differential separation of compounds was achieved by liquid-liquid extraction using different solvents. Six compounds: 4-Hydroxybenzeneacetic acid; 5-Oxo-pyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester; 1-[3-Methyl-3-Butenyl] Pyrrolidine; Trans-sinapyl alcohol; 5-[Hydroxymethyl]-2-furaldehyde and 2,4- Dihydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3[2H]-furan-3-one, identified in the fruit-shell extract, are being reported for the first time from this plant. Strong antioxidant potential of the extract was evident from efficient scavenging of free radicals. The extract also conferred protection to yeast cells against oxidative damage. Conclusion: Results showed that the hard shell of the Aegle marmelos fruit was a potent source for antioxidant compounds, which can be developed for therapeutic applications in the control and management of metabolic diseases.

Antioxidants are a family of substances that can neutralize free radicals and prevent and/or treat diseases associated with oxidative stress such as male’s infertility. Medicinal plants are one of the main sources of antioxidants. Aim: This work was aimed at evaluating the chemical and antioxidant potential of different extracts from some plants used in traditional Beninese medicine for the treatment of male infertility. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out on aqueous, hydro-ethanolic and ethanolic extracts from of the roots of Gardenia ternifolia (G. ternifolia), the whole plant of Cassytha filiformis (C. filiformis), the leaves of Rourea coccinea (R. coccinea) and the seed of Garcinia kola (G .kola). Quantification of the total polyphenols and flavonoids content of these extracts was evaluated respectively by the method using Folin Ciocalteu and the method using Aluminum trichloride. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated by molecular spectrophotometry using the free radical scavenging of DPPH and FRAP methods. Results: The results obtained indicated a variation of total polyphenols and flavonoids content according to the type of extract. Hydro-ethanolic extract of the various plants studied has a high polyphenols and flavonoids content. In variable proportions, all the extracts tested reduced the DPPH radical and ferric iron, reflecting their antioxidant potential. The best antioxidant activity has been obtained with the hydro-ethanolic extracts. Conclusion: This study showed that all the plant's extracts studied have antioxidant activity that varies with the type of extract. However, the hydro-ethanolic extractions showed the best antioxidant activities. The data obtained in the present study justified the use of these plants in management of pathologies involving oxidative stress.

ABSTRACTBackground: Oxidative stress is associated with the progression of degenerative disease. The consumption of antioxidant resources to prevent the body from oxidative stress damage. Mangosteen fruit hull is one of the mangosteen waste which has potential activity of natural antioxidant, such as xanthone and anthocyanins. Xanthon and anthocyanins influenced by pH and heating. Therefore, it is necessary to study about the effect of pH and temperature pasteurized on antioxidant activity of the mangosteen fruit hull juice.Objective : Analyze the effect of antioxidant activity and the level of acceptance of the mangosteen fruit hull juice with various pH and pasteurization temperature. Methods : An experimental study with a factorial design which combines pH (pH 3 and pH 4) and pasteurization temperature (temperature of 750C, 850C, 950C). The analyzes are antioxidant activities and the level of acceptance. The antioxidant activity obtained with DPPH (2,2 dhipenyl -1-pycrilhidrazyil) test. The acceptance test are conducted with hedonic test. Statistical analysis of the antioxidant activity using Two Way ANOVA test CI 95%, while the level of acceptance using Friedman test followed Wilcoxon test. Result : The result of antioxidant activity of mangosteen fruit hull juice ranged 80.64-89.70%. The various pH and pasteurization temperature did not effect the antioxidant activity of the mangosteen fruit hull juice. The results of  test acceptance, color and taste are affected by variations in pH and temperature pasteurization, except aroma. The more acidic pH of juice, mangosteen fruit hull juice color of the panelists preferred. Acidification can not relieve harsh flavor mangosteen fruit hull juice. All mangosteen fruit hull juice aroma panelists preferred.Conclucion : The various pH and pasteurization temperature did not effect the antioxidant activity of the mangosteen fruit hull juice. The results of  test acceptance, color and taste are affected by variations in pH and temperature pasteurization, except aroma. Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don, est une plante médicinale largement utilisée en tradithérapie contre le diabète, l’hypertension, le cancer et les effets du stress oxydatif. Elle existe en trois variétés ("rosea", "alba" et "hybride") selon la couleur des fleurs. L’étude actuelle porte sur le criblage phytochimique et l’activité antioxydante in vitro (DPPH et FRAP) de l’extrait hydro-éthanolique des trois variétés. Les tests ont été effectués sur les extraits des feuilles, fleurs et racines. On a noté la présence des alcaloïdes, phénols, flavonoïdes, tanins, saponines, stérols, terpènes et quinines. Cependant, l’absence des sucres réducteurs, des flavonoïdes et des saponines dans les racines ainsi que les quinines dans les feuilles a été relevée. L'analyse comparative par piégeage du radical DPPH a montré que les extraits des fleurs et racines de l’hybride étaient plus actifs, respectivement de 130,023±3,2 et 131,189±1,8 mg EqQ/g. Une tendance différente a été observée dans les extraits des feuilles où la meilleure valeur DPPH de 65,746±2,5 mg EqQ/g est attribuée à "rosea" alors que celle du FRAP de 139,935±2,57 mg EqAA/g provient de "alba". Ces résultats devraient encourager la poursuite des travaux sur l'identification et la caractérisation de nouveaux composés bioactifs sélectivement abondant pour une meilleure valorisation de Catharanthus roseus sur le plan de phytomédicaments.Mots clés : Catharanthus roseus, variétés, criblage phytochimique, antioxydant. English Title: Phytochemical study and comparative antioxidant activity of the three varieties of Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. DonCatharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don, is a medicinal plant widely used in the treatment of diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and effects of oxidative stress. C. roseus exists in three varieties ("rosea", "alba" and "hybrid") depending on the colour of the flowers. This study focused on phytochemical screening and in vitro antioxidant activity (DPPH and FRAP) of the hydro-ethanol extract of the three varieties. The tests were carried out on leaves, flowers, and roots extracts. The presence of alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, sterols, terpenes, and quinines were noted. However, the absence of reducing sugars, flavonoids, and saponins in the roots and quinines in the leaves was observed. Comparative analysis of DPPH radical scavenging showed that extracts from the flowers and roots of the hybrid were more active, respectively at 130.023±3.2 and 131.189±1.8 mg EqQ/g. FRAP values of the same samples were 175.166± 9.28 and 121.311±7.8 mg EqAA/g dry matter. For the leaves, the best DPPH value of 65.746±2.5 mg EqQ/g was attributed to "rosea" while the FRAP value of 139.935±2.57 mg EqAA/g was for "alba". These interesting antioxidant activities of the "hybrid" variety may be useful against oxidative stress pathologies. The current study might then promote the continuing identification and characterization of new bioactive compounds for a development of Catharanthus roseus.Keywords: Catharanthus roseus, varieties, phytochemical screening, antioxidant.

Oxidative Stress is the primary cause of most of the diseases currently in the world. The human body is prone to many illnesses out of which oxidative stress plays a significant role in the causation of those. The Stress in the body releases free radicals and these free radicals react with the cell organelle and cause denaturation and break down. The generated free radicals should be fought to eliminate and prevent toxic effects. Many drugs are known to fight free radicals. Most of them had been scientifically evaluated and published for their activity too. The investigations say that antioxidant activity of the herbs does not similarly reflect . There were differences in activity and significant deviations in the results that are shown in comparison to and . Thus, there is an urgent necessity to investigate the antioxidant activity of herbs to make sure that the activity resembles and to find any variations when compared to activity. This research protocol was framed out to screen for the antioxidant activity of the ethanol extracts of the Indigofera leaves by estimating the serum parameters and correlating the results with the human body. Out of the values overall, the were the ones that are significant participants in fighting the free radicals and in boosting the immune system. The ethanol extract successfully prevented the breakdown of the cellular structure of the liver cells, thereby protecting it and replenishing the enzyme levels by destroying the free radicals that are generated due to DMH.

Antioxidants can neutralize free radicals that can affect biological systems in the body that can cause degenerative diseases. Antibacterial active molecules have been identified from plants, and these chemicals are being utilized to develop new and promising treatments. The Mobe plant (Artocarpus lacucha Buch-Ham.) is a species of Artocarpus member of the Moraceae family. Includes a high proportion of phenolic compounds (flavonoids and phenolic acid). This research obtained to know about the biological activity of Artocarpus lacucha Buch-Ham and their total flavonoid and total phenolic content. The extract was prepared using the soxhletation technique using ethanol as the solvent. Antibacterial activity was determined using minimum inhibitor concentration. Propionibacterium acne can be inhibited at concentrations ranging from 300 ppm to 25 ppm. The DPPH technique was used to assess antioxidant activity. The samples’ total flavonoid and phenolic content were measured colorimetrically. The DPPH test revealed an antioxidant activity of 23.33 g/mL, which was used to compute the IC50. The extract’s total phenolic (117.44 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (3.54 mg QE/g) content were determined to be high.

Citrus fruits have long been qualified as veritable foods in view of the many therapeutic benefits they bring to the body. Several researchers have stud-ied the relationship between the bioactive compounds of Citrus and the health benefits and reduction of the risk of disease. Citrus sinensis, used in the food industry and its extracts have also been used in traditional medicine to activate vital energy, circulation, and weight loss, and appetite control. However, limited efforts have been made on collecting data on antioxidant potential of peels orange from the northern region of Algeria. Our study, therefore, focuses on the evaluation of total polyphenols compounds and in vitro assessment of their antioxidant potential of peels orange from the northern region of Algeria. The ethyl acetate and n-butanolic fractions from peels orange have been tested for their antioxidant activities and their lipid peroxidation inhibiting effects. The total phenolic and flavonoids content showed high levels. The preliminary phytochemical screening of tannins, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, coumarin, and alkaloids was also used. DPPH assay possesses strong potency to scavenge free radicals. The NO. radi-cal scavenging test exerts a good inhibitory effect. Furthermore, orange peels have been shown to suppress the lipid peroxidation of linoleic acid. Results further revealed a strong correlation between antioxidant effects and polyphenolic compounds. The high antioxidant activity of peel orange suggests that it could serve as a good natural antioxidant additive or food dietary supplement.
