 AbstractThe objective of this study was to evaluate the adherence to Mediterranean diet (AMD) and body esteem (BE) in acrobatic gymnasts and their relationships with anthropometric parameters. Participated 48 teenage gymnasts (32 girls and 16 boys) of 12-21old-years. The AMD was analyzed through Quality Test of Diet Mediterranean in Childhood and Adolescence (KIDMED test) and the Body Esteem Scale for Children (BES-C). The waist circumference was measured, as well as the height and weight, calculating BMI and waist-height ratio (WHR). The 69% of sample showed an optimal AMD with a BMI of 18.6 kg/ m2, waist circumference of 62.1 cm and WHR of 0.4 cm without sex differences. The AMD is not associated with BE and anthropometric parameters. In general, boys and girls showed good BE. Not significant relationships were found between values of KIDMED test, anthropometric variables and BE. In general, the eating habits of the gymnast were healthy, presenting to the most optimal AMD, normal values of BMI and a good perception of their body imagen. However, although these results are encouraging, it was evident that almost a third of the participants would need to improve their diet, which points to the need to strengthen nutritional education strategies in the sport field.ResumenEl objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la adherencia a la dieta mediterránea (ADM) y la estima corporal (EC) en gimnastas acrobáticos, así como su relación con parámetros antropométricos. Participaron 48 gimnastas adolescentes (32 mujeres y 16 hombres), de 12-21 años de edad. La ADM fue evaluada a través del Índice de Calidad de la Dieta Mediterránea en la Infancia y Adolescencia (KIDMED) y la EC mediante la Escala de Estima Corporal para Niños (BES-C); además fueron medidos (talla, peso y perímetro de cintura) para calcular el índice de masa corporal (IMC) y la razón cintura-talla (RCT). El 69% de los participantes mostró alta ADM y buena EC, con IMC promedio de 18.6 kg/m2, perímetro de cintura de 62.1 cm y RCT de 0.4 cm, sin registrarse diferencias entre sexos. La ADM no se asoció con la EC o los parámetros antropométricos. En general, los hábitos alimentarios de los participantes fueron saludables, con alta o moderada ADM y satisfactoria imagen corporal. No obstante, aunque estos resultados son alentadores, fue evidente que casi un tercio de los participantes requeriría mejorar su dieta, lo que apunta a la necesidad de fortalecer las estrategias de educación nutricional en el ámbito deportivo.

Introducción: Los estudiantes universitarios se encuentran en un periodo crítico para el desarrollo y consolidación de estilos de vida futuros. El objetivo fue conocer los hábitos alimentarios, preferencias alimentarias y habilidades culinarias del alumnado de primer curso de las distintas titulaciones de la Universidad de Huelva.Material y Método: Estudio descriptivo transversal durante el año académico 2015-2016 de una muestra final de 756 alumnos. La adherencia a la Dieta Mediterránea se ha medido a través del cuestionario KIDMED. El resto de variables se han recogido mediante un cuestionario ad hoc. El análisis de datos se realizó mediante el PSPP, calculándose medias, desviaciones típicas y porcentajes para el análisis descriptivo, prueba de Chi-cuadrado y ANOVA para el análisis relacional.Resultados: El 20,4% del alumnado tiene un nivel óptimo de adherencia a la Dieta Mediterránea, frente al 65,3% que posee un nivel medio y un 14,3% bajo. Los alimentos preferidos son pollo (62,2%), pasta (58,2%), cerdo (50,4%) y las patatas fritas (45,9%). Entre los alimentos que saben preparar están la pasta, (93,8%), patatas con huevo (90.2 %), pizza precocinada (88.7 %), zumo (86.1 %) y carne a la plancha (85.8 %).Conclusiones: La dieta de los estudiantes onubenses es muy similar a la de otras poblaciones universitarias estudiadas. Se encontró preferencia por las carnes y alimentos ricos en glúcidos, en detrimento de la fruta y la verdura. Se observó un déficit en las habilidades culinarias, lo cual podría explicar el deterioro del patrón alimentario de éstos y orientar futuras intervenciones. The objective of this study was to know the eating habits, food preferences and culinary skills of first-year students on different degree courses at the University of Huelva.Material and Method: Cross-sectional descriptive study in academic year 2015-2016 of a sample of 756 students. Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet was measured by the KIDMED questionnaire. The rest of the variables were measured by an ad hoc questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using the PSPP programme, calculating arithmetic means, standard deviations and percentages for the descriptive analysis, with Chi-square test and ANOVA for the relational analysis.Results: 20.4% of students have an optimal level of adherence to the Mediterranean Diet, compared to 65.3% % with an average level and 14.3% with low adherence. Favourite foods cited were chicken (62.2%), pasta (58.2%), pork (50.4%) and chips (45.9%). The types of food the students knew how to prepare included pasta (93.8%), egg and chips (90.2%), precooked pizza (88.7%), fruit juices (86.1%) and grilled meat (85.8%).Conclusions: Huelva university students diet is very similar to that of other university populations studied. We found a preference for meat and foods rich in carbohydrates, to the detriment of fruit and vegetables. A lack of culinary skills was observed, which could explain the deterioration in eating habits; this is a pointer to future interventions.

Summary Background: It has been reported that obesity is associated with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, cardiovascular risk but also with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents is increasing rapidly all over the world. The aim of this study was to analyze the value of liver enzymes: AST, ALT and γGT in a group of obese students in order to establish their correlation to anthropometric parameters such as: BMI (body mass index), WC (waist circumference), HC (hip circumference), and WHR (waist-to-hip ratio) compared to non-obese students who comprised the control group (CG). Methods: In this study, 238 students from the University of Novi Sad of both sexes (126 men and 112 women) with a mean age of 22.32 ± 1.85 years were included. According to the body mass index (BMI) lower and higher than 25 kg/m2 and waist circumference (WC) lower and higher than 94 cm (80 cm for females) the whole group of 238 students was divided into 2 subgroups: the obese group at increased risk for CVD (Group 1) and the group at lower risk for CVD (Group 2). AST, ALT and γGT activities were determined in fasting blood samples. Results: Statistical processing data revealed significantly higher values of AST, ALT and γGT in the group of students with BMI>25 kg/m2, WC>94 cm for males and WC>80 cm for females, HC>108 cm for males and HC>111 cm for females, and WHR>0.90 for males and WHR>0.80 for females (P<0.001). Significant association was established between anthropometric parameters and liver enzyme levels (P<0.0001). Conclusions: Obese students with higher BMI, WC, HC and WHR values have higher liver enzyme activites and a higher chance to develop NAFLD in the future.

Aim. The efficacy of triphala on lipid profile, blood glucose and anthropometric parameters and its safety were assessed. Methods. Databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Thai Library Integrated System (ThaiLIS) were systematically searched to review current evidence of randomized controlled trials (RCT) on triphala. RCTs investigating the safety and efficacy of triphala on lipid profile, blood glucose and anthropometric parameters were included. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed independently by 2 authors. Results. Twelve studies on a total of 749 patients were included. The triphala-treated groups showed significantly reduced low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglyceride in 6 studies. Five RCTs demonstrated triphala-treated groups led to statistically significant decrease in body weight, body mass index and waist circumference of obese patients. Moreover, triphala significantly decreased fasting blood glucose level in diabetic patients but not in people without diabetes. No serious adverse event associated with triphala was reported during treatment. Conclusions. This review summarized a current evidence to show triphala might improve the lipid profile, blood glucose, the body weight, body mass index and waist circumference under certain conditions. However, large well-designed RCTs are required to confirm this conclusion.

Chronotype is the attitude of a subject in determining individual circadian preference in behavioral and biological rhythm relative to the external light–dark cycle. Obesity and unhealthy eating habits have been associated with evening chronotype. The Mediterranean diet (MD) is a healthy nutritional pattern that has been reported to be associated with better health and quality of sleep. Thus, the aim of the study was to investigate the association of chronotype categories with adherence to the MD in a population of middle-aged Italian adults. This cross-sectional study included 172 middle-aged adults (71.5% females; 51.8 ± 15.7 years) that were consecutively enrolled in a campaign to prevent obesity called the OPERA (obesity, programs of nutrition, education, research and assessment of the best treatment) Prevention Project that was held in Naples on 11–13 October 2019. Anthropometric parameters, adherence to the MD and chronotype were studied. Chronotype was classified as morning in 58.1% of subjects, evening in 12.8% and intermediate in 28.1%. Our results demonstrated that individuals with evening chronotype, when compared to intermediate (p < 0.001) and morning chronotype (p < 0.001), were more prone to follow unhealthy lifestyle, performing less regular activity and being more frequently smokers. In addition, they showed the lowest adherence to the MD compared to morning (p < 0.001) and intermediate chronotypes (p < 0.001). The lower the chronotype score, the higher body mass index (BMI) values in the whole population (r = −0.158; p = 0.038), thus suggesting that evening chronotype was a common finding in subjects with obesity. In addition, positive correlations of chronotype score with age (r = 0.159; p = 0.037) and PREDIMED score (r = 0.656; p < 0.001) were found. The adherence to the MD, more than the intake of the single food items, was found to predict morning and evening chronotypes. In conclusion, evening chronotype was associated with unhealthy lifestyle and low adherence to the MD. Chronotype score was inversely associated to BMI and positively associated to age and adherence to the MD. Thus, the assessment of chronotype should be taken into account in the management of obesity and in the development of nutritional strategies.

Introduction: Overweight and obesity are pathologies that are increasing every day. This study was aimed to determine the relationship between anthropometric variables and lipid profiles in a sample of young university students, which leads to taking future prevention actions. Materials and Methods: A descriptive correlational study was conducted with a sample of 182 university students (88 women and 94 men), whose anthropometric variables and lipid profiles were evaluated. Data were analyzed using the SPSS Statistics 20 software. The sample distribution was analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test. Results were expressed as mean ± standard deviation or percentage, as applicable. Significance was established under the Pearson’s correlation coefficient with p ≤0.05 value. Partial correlations were used to evaluate the relationship between each of the anthropometric risk indices and lipid profile values. Results: 46.7% of the population were overweight classifies as low-risk for waist circumference (45.1%), finding that the body adiposity index was healthy for their age in 64.5% of the participants. As for lipid profile, normal values for triglycerides were found in 60.4% of the participants and optimal values for total cholesterol in 56%. Correlational analysis with a significance of p≤0.005 was positive for gender with anthropometric variables such as Body Mass Index and waist circumference. Discussion: Anthropometric characteristics are closely related to the lipid profile behavior, as shown in this study, and the different research studies conducted with university students. Conclusions: Anthropometric variables are positively related to the gender of university students, finding an association between total cholesterol and triglycerides, which indicates a health risk factor. La adherencia a la dieta mediterránea (DM) y una práctica regular de ejercicio físico se asocian positivamente con una mejor calidad de vida y con una reducción de los niveles de sobrepeso, obesidad y patologías asociadas. El objetivo del presente estudio es analizar la adherencia a la dieta mediterránea, motivos para la práctica de ejercicio físico y posibles relaciones con los elementos de composición corporal (IMC, % Grasa Corporal y Circunferencia de Cintura) en 387 adolescentes islandeses (54% chicos, 46% chicas, Medad=15.03). Se realizaron análisis de Chi-cuadrado (χ2), t-Student y Anova. La adherencia a la DM de los sujetos se clasifica media/alta. Los valores más bajos se encontraron en sujetos de mayor edad. La práctica de ejercicio físico de los mismos participantes en este estudio responde a motivaciones intrínsecas (Diversión y Bienestar, Fuerza y Resistencia Muscular, Desafío, Competición, Agilidad y Flexibilidad, Afiliación, Prevención y Salud Positiva). La investigación arroja asociaciones entre adherencia a la DM y elementos de composición corporal; así como entre IMC y porcentaje de grasa con motivos de práctica de ejercicio físico (peso e imagen corporal). En conclusión, el conocimiento generado en la presente investigación hace posible la comprensión y el acercamiento en mayor profundidad a las motivaciones del alumnado participante, así como sus niveles de adherencia a la DM. Todo ello habrá de ser utilizado por los docentes de Educación Física (EF) para la planificación, diseño y desarrollo de su docencia.Abstract: Adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) and regular practice of physical exercise are positively associated with better quality of life and with reduction of the levels of overweight, obesity, and associated pathologies. This study aims to analyze adherence to the Mediterranean diet, reasons for exercising and possible relationships with elements of body composition (BMI, Body Fat %, and Waist Circumference) in 387 Icelandic adolescents (54% boys, 46% Girls, Mage=15.03). Chi-Square (χ2), t-student test, and Anova analyses were performed. Subjects’ adherence to MD is classified as medium/high. The lowest values were found in older subjects. Physical exercise practice of the participants in this study responds to intrinsic motivations (Revitalization and Enjoyment, Strength and Endurance, Challenge, Competition, Nimbleness and Affiliation). The research shows associations between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and elements of body composition; as well as between BMI and percentage of fat with reasons of physical exercise practice (Weight Management and Body Image). In conclusion, the knowledge generated in this research makes possible to understand and approach with better precision participating students’ motivations, as well as their levels of adherence to the Mediterranean diet. All this will have to be used by Physical Education teachers for planning, designing and developing their teaching.

Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: None. Introduction. On the one hand, physical training such as High intensity interval training (HIIT) and on the other, eating habits, it is often prescribed to patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Nevertheless, the combination of HIIT and eating habits in CAD with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) there is no consensus on using a combined protocol of both. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of an HIIT program with eating habits, with a program based in HIIT, on anthropometric parameters in CAD patients with PCI. Methods. A randomized controlled trial was carried out in a hospital.  44 patients with CAD and PCI were recruited. All participants signed an informed consent. Patients were randomly allocated to a HIIT group (HIIT, n = 22, 81.8% men, 62.05 ± 4.9 years) or to a Dietary education and HIIT (DEHIIT) group (n = 22, 81.8% men, 60.2 ± 5.6 years). HIIT consisted of a 3-month physiotherapy program, twice a week for one hour, at 85-95% peak heart rate. DEHIIT consisted of a multidisciplinary program, including the same HIIT program explained, plus eating habits. Body composition (weight, BMI, % body fat, % visceral fat, muscle mass) and waist circumference, hip circumference and Waste-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) were evaluated at baseline and at week 12. Results. At the end of the program, DEHIIT significantly decreased all anthropometrics parameters except muscle mass. The following parameters decreased: weight (p ≤ 0.001), BMI (p ≤ 0.001), body fat (p ≤ 0.001), visceral fat (p ≤ 0.001), waist circumference (p ≤ 0.001), hip circumference (p = 0.043) and WHR (p ≤ 0.001). Instead, the muscle mass increased  significantly (p ≤ 0.001). When comparing between groups, DEHIIT did not show significant differences weight (p = 0.575), BMI (p = 0.404), % body fat (p = 0.217), muscle mass (p = 0.508), waist circumference (p = 0.165), hip circumference (p = 0.307), WHR (p = 0.379), except for presenting less visceral fat (p = 0.040) than HIIT. Conclusions HIIT programme with eating habits reducing visceral fat in CAD patients with PCI compared to a HIIT-only program.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Eating habits are one of the underlying aspects in rhythmic gymnastics as a sport with an aesthetic component. Objective: To evaluate adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) in girls and adolescents who perform rhythmic gymnastics, and the relationship of this adherence with Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference. Methods: A prospective, descriptive comparative cross-sectional study with the participation of 221 gymnasts aged between 7 and 17 years. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was analyzed using the KIDMED test. The waist circumference, height and weight of each gymnast were measured and the BMI calculated. Results: 41.63%, 52.94% and 5.43% of the total sample exhibited high, medium and low adherence, respectively, to the Mediterranean diet. The Mann-Whitney U test indicated significant differences in the rate of adherence to the Mediterranean diet between the two age groups, U = 5007.0, p = .016, r = .162. The adolescent gymnasts had greater adherence than the younger gymnasts. The total sample showed a positive correlation of the rate of adherence with weight (Rho = .143, p = .034), BMI (Rho = .152, p = .024) and waist circumference (Rho = .180, p = .007). Conclusions: The eating habits of adolescent gymnasts with regard to the Mediterranean diet are healthier than those of the younger gymnasts. All participants had normal BMI values. The KIDMED values of the total sample were related to weight and BMI. The high percentages of younger gymnasts with mean adherence to the MD evidenced the need to approximate their eating habits with Mediterranean standards.
