HTPB is a valuable comonomer for the preparation of polyurethanes. Thanks to its specific properties, it gives these materials frost resistance and excellent mechanical properties, especially at low temperatures. The polyurethanes thus obtained are used in the production of propellants used in space and military rocket propulsion, and are the basis for frost-resistant adhesives and insulating materials. Research on the selection of binder indicates the use of high energy polymers or modifications of previously used polymers improving their properties. The results of research on ways of changing the properties of HTPB through its modification and thus an increase of application possibilities will be presented.

Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is a co-monomer used in the production of polyurethanes. Its unique properties make it resistant to frost and give it excellent mechanical properties, especially at low temperatures. Polyurethanes obtained using this method are used in the production of propellants for space and military rocket propulsion systems, frost-resistant adhesives and insulation materials. Current research on the choice of binder indicates use of highenergy polymers or the modification of previously used polymers aimed at improving their properties. In modern rocket propulsion materials, the polymer binder may be replaced with a suitable high-energy compound, i.e. a polymer including energy groups, e.g. azide or nitro group. The article presents the results of research on methods of modifying HTPB properties to widen its applicability.

The article studies results of corrosion-mechanical behavior of multifunctional composition "steel-material with a shape memory effect" formed in high-energy impacts in different environments. Analysis of experimental results shows an increased resistance to corrosion of the composition "steel-material with SME based on TiNi, NiAl» and confirms their protective properties in water, natural atmosphere, marine environments, saturated NaCl solution and medium aggressive environments. It has been shown that for highly corrosive acids with concentration of > 20% based on hydrofluoric HF, hydrochloric HCl, sulfuric H2SO4 there are several limitations and stages associated with dissolution of the layer and loss of corrosion resistance. Given the significant effect of surface treatment method on the whole range of functional and mechanical properties of materials with shape memory effect, we proposed recommendations on the selection of compromise solutions.

Using radiothermoluminescence (RTL), the molecular mobility features in the temperature range of 77-300 K were studied for the polypropylene (PP)/ethylene propylene diene elastomer SKEPT-4044 with NiO, Cu2O and Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) based on ABS-acrylonitrile butadiene or SCS-divinyl styrene matrices. It has been shown that the introduction of nanofillers in PP significantly affects the nature and temperature of γ- and β-relaxation processes, while the region of manifestation of the β-process noticeably shifts to the region of low temperatures. Composites with Cu2O NPs have a higher β-transition temperature Tβ than composites with other NPs. It was found that PP/SKEPT-4044 composites with Cu2O NPs with a dispersion of 11-15 nm and acrylonitrile butadiene thermoplastics have optimal frost resistance compared to other compositions.

For energy production and also for the glass industry, finding new refractory alloys which could permit to increase the process temperatures to 1200°C or more is a permanent challenge. Chromium base alloys can be good candidates, considering the melting point of Cr itself, and also its low corrosion rate in molten glass. Two families of alloys have been studied for this purpose, Cr-Mo-W and Cr-Ta-X alloys (X= Mo, Si..). A finer selection of compositions has been done, to optimize their chemical and mechanical properties. Kinetics of HT oxidation by air, of corrosion by molten glass and also creep properties of several alloys have been measured up to 1250°C. The results obtained with the best alloys (Cr-Ta base) give positive indications as regards the possibility of their industrial use.

In this study, coir fibers were successfully modified with henna (derived from the Lawsonia inermis plant) using a high-energy ball-milling process. In the next step, such developed filler was used as a reinforcing filler in the production of rigid polyurethane (PUR) foams. The impact of 1, 2, and 5 wt % of coir-fiber filler on structural and physico-mechanical properties was evaluated. Among all modified series of PUR composites, the greatest improvement in physico-mechanical performances was observed for PUR composites reinforced with 1 wt % of the coir-fiber filler. For example, on the addition of 1 wt % of coir-fiber filler, the compression strength was improved by 23%, while the flexural strength increased by 9%. Similar dependence was observed in the case of dynamic-mechanical properties—on the addition of 1 wt % of the filler, the value of glass transition temperature increased from 149 °C to 178 °C, while the value of storage modulus increased by ~80%. It was found that PUR composites reinforced with coir-fiber filler were characterized by better mechanical performances after the UV-aging.

Biopolymers formed into a fibrous morphology through electrospinning are of increasing interest in the field of biomedicine due to their intrinsic biocompatibility and biodegradability and their ability to be biomimetic to various fibrous structures present in animal tissues. However, their mechanical properties are often unsatisfactory and their processing may be troublesome. Thus, extensive research interest is focused on improving these qualities. This review article presents the selection of the recent advances in techniques aimed to improve the electrospinnability of various biopolymers (polysaccharides, polynucleotides, peptides, and phospholipids). The electrospinning of single materials, and the variety of co-polymers, with and without additives, is covered. Additionally, various crosslinking strategies are presented. Examples of cytocompatibility, biocompatibility, and antimicrobial properties are analyzed. Special attention is given to whey protein isolate as an example of a novel, promising, green material with good potential in the field of biomedicine. This review ends with a brief summary and outlook for the biomedical applicability of electrospinnable biopolymers.

The need for the development of new biodegradable materials and modification of the properties the current ones possess has essentially increased in recent years. The aim of this study was the comparison of changes occurring in poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) due to its modification by high-energy electron beam derived from a linear electron accelerator, as well as the addition of natural fibers in the form of cut hemp fibers. Changes to the fibers structure in the obtained composites and the geometrical surface structure of sample fractures with the use of scanning electron microscopy were investigated. Moreover, the mechanical properties were examined, including tensile strength, elongation at break, flexural modulus and impact strength of the modified PCL. It was found that PCL, modified with hemp fibers and/or electron radiation, exhibited enhanced flexural modulus but the elongation at break and impact strength decreased. Depending on the electron radiation dose and the hemp fibers content, tensile strength decreased or increased. It was also found that hemp fibers caused greater changes to the mechanical properties of PCL than electron radiation. The prepared composites exhibited uniform distribution of the dispersed phase in the polymer matrix and adequate adhesion at the interface between the two components.
